WaPo article here on asbestos. We had a pulm guy during one of our rotations give a talk about the predominant type of cancer from asbestos, called mesothelioma. He emphasized how rare it was for someone to have mesothelioma with asbestos as their only risk factor. Moreover, most patients with mesothelioma were both exposed to asbestos AND smoked cigarettes.

HISTORY has a way of catching up with James Hardie.

Russell Chenu rejoined the company as interim chief financial officer late last year, with the special responsibility of finding a solution to the massive funding shortfall in the foundation Hardie set up in 2001 to meet future asbestos disease claims.

Two decades earlier, Chenu finished a 13-year stint working for James Hardie as a young finance executive in Australia and Indonesia and saw some of his colleagues contract ghastly diseases, including asbestosis and the lung cancer mesothelioma.

This time around, he was determined to make a difference.
