Question by Laura: Asbestos in floor?I went to homedepot for new flooring. they said they won’t remove the lenolium in the?
kitchen or bathroom unless it is tested for Asbestos. since the rest of the house is carpet it is ok. they said this is a law and law is one yr old. if i had it done last yr I didn’t have to find an specialist to do it. and if it has asbestos it will be very costly.
has any body done the asbestos test? what company? i live in california. last yr I removed half of the lenolium sheet in my bathroom and replaced it with vinyl tiles. if it had asbestos were I dead by now? thanks.

welcome to your liberal/democrat controlled world ,,,, how you liking it now ? and you just re-elected jerry ” moonbeam ” brown as Governor, hahahaha.
liberals and their lawyers are getting rich off this utter non sense.
So now you will have to do it yourself, because of the liberal/democrats.
even if it did have asb in it ,it is what is called ” encapsulated ” and can cause no harm.
install 1/4plywood 1st
ok so you may or may not have asbestos ……….
you couldn’t EVER legally rip out asbestos without a permit and without a licensed contractor .
so its not a new law .
you can have an asbestos company come in and take a sample , and have it tested . in boston its about 100 bucks .
DO NOT remove any flooring unless its been tested, if you contaminate the home you are liable for the clean up ( even if you live there ) if you sell it and they can show that you tore out and got the dust in the house ,,,,,,they can come after you .( gross negligence / triple damages )
LET me ask you this why would you want to live in a home with a material that is know carcinogen ( cancer causing substance) at any price ????
asbestos is a mineral ( basically a rock ) that was ground up and put into alot of stuff to make it less flammable ,,,like linoleum flooring . when asbestos is contained or is WET its harmless .
when it dries out and gets air borne ( ripping out bathroom floor ) you inhale it . The particles under a microscope look like thorn bushes , when inhaled they stick to the soft lining of your lungs and over time ( sometimes 20 years ) cause asbestosis or mesothelioma ( sp)
same as the coal miners get black lung from inhaling coal dust .
same as plasters and drywall installers inhale the silicone from the dust and get silicosis.
Get this material tested ( bathroom and kitchen ) and if your home is what we call ” HOT ”
GET IT REMOVED .
Typical bathroom asbestos only removal 2500.00
Typical kitchen asbestos only removal 5500.00
Good luck and please don’t rip out anything that you don’t know exactly what it is .
A few things, asbestos is harmful when breathed. You would somehow have to grind the lineoleum to a dust, then inhale it to be dangerous. Nothing says you cant cover over a lineolium with the tiles. Level the floor with a product called Ardex. Don’t use a plaster based leveler. Then tile right over the old stuff.
Asbestos is a very common naturally occurring mineral in the earth’s crust. It has been used for over 100 years in buildings and is still found in many old ones. The only dangerous type is the friable one, but just treat it all like it is the dangerous one. Buy a dust mask rated for asbestos HD has them I believe. http://www.professionalequipment.com/3m-8293-p100-dust-mask-3m-8293/dust-masks/?source=pegs . Open a window in the room you’re working on and put a box fan in it blowing outward. This will keep any fibers from traveling into other rooms. At the end of the day mop the floor, wash your clothes and take a shower. I worked at a university that had the stuff removed a few years ago, it cost 8 million dollars and amounted to 40 tons. They took it to the landfill and dumped it legally. Do not sand or create a lot of dust just to be on the safe side. The highest airborne levels are found near busy intersections because of it’s use in brake shoes.
laura, the asbestos is in the glue used to lay the linoleum, but not all glues, save yourself some misery and just lay the tiles over the old floor. there is mastic that is made to do that and is done all the time. go the a regular tile store, one that caters to the trade, to get advice and help. they may even take up the floor for you. where there is a will there is a way! don’t give up, and good luck
I agree with Mark’s answer.
Unless your house is pretty old your 99% safe. The first problem is you live in California, LOL sorry but you guys will stop a multi million dollar construction project over a little bug … I would find a local handyman to do this for cash. He can pull the old floor and install new cheaper than home depot without the asbestos hassles.
umm, you can tile right over it as long as the vinyl is still adhered to the floor. the old leno makes a good vapor barrier.
Leave it. Just install a new sub floor.
