Question by Tommy: Does sawdust insulation have asbestos? My wife and I bought a 1941 house and in the attic it has saw dust insulation with small shinny flakes of vermiculite. I went up in the attic to remove some blue tarps and kicked up a lot of dust, but I was only in the room for no more than 5 minutes without a particle mask and 5 with one on. So what are my risks in removing this insulation to replace with modern insulation? Should I have it tested? Should I buy a shop vac and do the job myself?

Answer by movinonman Vermiculite is dangerous and should be treated with care. N95 masks or better should be used when moving this product. Yes a shop vac can be used to remove it. I would not suggest any family members be home when this is being done. ( better to err on the safe side) If this is too much for you then hire a reputable company to remove the sawdust and vermiculite. You can install batt insulation yourself as it is a dyi kind of project.

If it is asbestos, you need to have it professionally removed. If non-asbestos, you need to wear the best dust mask you can find. Professional removal might still be a good idea. Dust can also be a problem if you are exposed.

it was used in floor tiles, shingles, and pipe insulation, for steam pipes,
never was used for home insulation,
rock wool and vermiculite were the main insulating , materials

I worked with it for years, [ asbestos ] never had health problems from it,
just as some smart collage kid said eggs were bad for you, so every one stopped eating eggs,
now its the medicine we have taken, or the food were eating,
so just put new over the old and stop worrying about if it,s gonna kill you. [Obama will take care of that]

If you not using the area. Why not just put 10″ of new insulation over the old insulation.
