Question by Princess’s Prince: Have any studies been done regarding the frequency of lung cancer in musicians who play wind instruments vs.?
the general poplulation? Smokers and non smokers? Would there be a possible correlation between playing a wind instrument and a reduced risk of lung cancer? Would playing a wind instrument help keep the lungs clean? Or would playing a wind instrument have no effects on ones risk of having lung cancer? Thanks

I thought your question was interesting (I am a wind musician) so I researched it.

I found one article that suggested a connection, but it was only based on an observation of two wind musicians and former smokers with lung cancer. The authors supposed that this was due to the large amounts of air being breathed in, increasing exposure to toxins in the air. This was the only mention I saw in a brief search.

This is a question that appears to be untested, largely because there are few wind musicians who smoke. A serious musician would hopefully avoid smoking.
