How can some people get lung cancer from smoking and some don’t?

Say two people have been smoking for 20 years… they smoke the same amount of cigarettes a day… yet one of them gets cancer and the other doesn’t? I’ve heard tons of stories that people can smoke their whole lives and never get cancer, emphysema, etc, but some people smoke less and they get it?

My dad died from lung cancer but he had smoked all of his life. He died at 72. I have wondered the same thing that you asked.
