i live in a home that was renovated less than a decade ago. It was built around the turn of the 20th century. When the home was renovated it wasn’t torn down to the brick, sheet rock was put up over the existing wall covering. I am mostly concerned about asbestos in the duct work and in the basement of the home. While I could get a “consumer” test kit, that presumes I would know how to identify suspect areas and gather samples from those areas. If there was asbestos trapped behind areas now covered with sheet rock that is one thing, but how would one be able to test for asbestos that may be in the duct work, and may be blowing around in my house?

You need to hire a professional licensed consultant and have it done correctly. In 20 years, I have never seen asbestos “in” the ductwork, only outside. The consultant can look in these places.
