Is it fiberglass, asbestos or something else?
Question by trader200: Is it fiberglass, asbestos or something else?
I went to a laundromat and found myself itchy suddenly when I opened a washer to deposit my clothes. So I took everything out and used a machine in the back. I eventually dried half the clothes and took home half undried. I hung out the wet clothes at home and started feeling itching again. Also my throat/chest felt unusual. Over the next few days I felt breathing was labored.
I put some of the wet clothes upstairs and eventually re-washed the whole thing. But the “stuff” from the clothes seemed to be in the house and when I opened the window for hours to clear the air – it spread it all over the house. Now my mother clears her throat often and I feel discomfort in my chest. What could be so persistent (over 6 weeks now) and is it dangerous? I just had an x-ray and breathing test-all was ok for now. Any ideas – would appreciate any useful insights or info.
Thanks.

Well i’m no professional, but asbestos usually takes alot longer to take action than that, i had an uncle that suffered of Asbestosis, it had been 15 years since he worked with Asbestos.
Another very vague possibility, you have inherited an allergy from your mother, though it seems yours is worse.
As I said, no professional, just experience

It is most definitely an allergic reaction. An anti-allergy should do the trick. The onset period between inhalation of asbestos and appearance of symptoms is approximately between 10 and even up to 30 years; that is not to say you wait until then. You could have your ceiling material taken in for laboratory testing to remove your immediate fears. Log onto informational sites.
