So how did we make it to this age if everything is so hazardous or toxic or non organic?
Question by ♥ Hurley is 10 months old ♥: So how did we make it to this age if everything is so hazardous or toxic or non organic?
I’m not ranting at all. I am a little confused. I took my son to the dr. for his 6 month check up. They asked me if I live in a home that was built before 1978, and I said yes. It was built in 1895, but has been remodeled top to bottom by us a few years ago. There was never any asbestos, as we had it tested, and there was no lead based paint. It was removed years and years ago, again we had it tested while I was preggo. They said that since I said yes it was, that they had to draw a few viles of blood to check for lead, asbestos and other substances. That was fine, but I just don’t understand how a 6 month old who doesn’t walk or crawl could eat lead chips, which we don’t have. It was neg. of course, but it just makes me think of all the people griping about chemicals in food, and dyes and what not. There are so many healthy adults that have been exposed to these things, I just want to know where it ends. He can’t live in a bubble. I am all for prevention and healthy living but I have never seen my baby in so much pain. IMO for nothing.
I totally agree that lead is not healthy, but I feel like my word and my thousands of dollars on remodling and testing the paint would be enough not to warrant a 350 dolllar test.

I think we made it this far because science has been able to identify the harmful elements of our environment, causing those things (substances, practices, ways of life, etc.) to be slowly removed from daily life. Therefore we as a society are able to live longer healthier lives. Actuaries are now predicting that in 20 years the average person in the US will live to be 115!
The people who are “fine” even though they were exposed to harmful elements because they got lucky.

I agree. I also wonder the same things…and our house was built in 1900, we have not had it tested, even if we did and there was lead(which i’m sure there is) by law i would have to remove it, and we don’t have thousands of dollars to do it. My son doesn’t eat the walls! And if he starts I will make him stop…i grew up in houses with lead and I always gnawed on the window sills…stepping outdoors can kill you!
I don’t get it either! Many healthy people have been exposed to these things, and eat non-organic food, etc. I have never eaten organic, and am totally healthy. Yet a lot of people I know swear by eating only organic, and they are sick often!
SING IT SISTER LOL. I gave both my boys food before they were 6 months. HELL my 1st was eating what we ate a 3 months because he had all his teeth. I know that they need to be safe and I get them checked and get the shots and so on but they really just try to make this so friggin hard on new moms. My boys are 14 months apart and OMG the changes that were made just from my 1st to my 2nd son were obscene. Did you know that now they are trying to say that swaddling is bad. WTF???? It is nuts
Part of the issue is that nowadays babies are exposed to so *many* chemicals. Plastics, food additives, pollution, drugs, fertilizers. And there do seem to be more chronic problems with children, and many people make the assumption that this exposure has something to do with it.
But it’s also worth noting that people *did* develop chronic health problems from lead and asbestos exposure historically. This is how we know these things are harmful.
Hate to say this, but doctors will do a lot of “necessary” testing and things when you have good insurance. They also play the fear card with mothers and act like your baby needs this, this, and this, in order to survive in this toxic world! I feel the same way you do though, even when I pregnant. I felt like I was expected to live in a bubble and most rules I followed were not followed 30 years ago and everyone I know turned out just fine!
remember also that as the economy is bad, healthcare needs to make ends meet. they will do this by offereing more tests than needed etc. etc. so that they can make more money and bill your insurance couple, or you. Healthcare is so expensive….they get big bucks for these test they recommend.
If you feel that a test is not needed on your child, you have the right to refuse it. It is ridiculous that the docs didn’t trust your response that all of those things have been removed or were never present in your home.
As long as you are providing a safe living environment for your child, I wouldn’t worry about what everyone else says about every chemical or substance. Unless he is drowning in it, it most likely will cause no harm to him. Don’t let them make you into some paranoid mommy who won’t let her child go to school because of what “might” be in the walls. Plenty of other children survived, so will he.
THe lead test makes sense to me because given the toys that had lead paint, the rationing is that the chemical can be left on their hands and therefore, the hand goes in the mouth and thus the poisioning.
The difference is that now there are chemcials in EVERYTHING and companies are far less scrupulous than they were. They don’t care if they endanger the public, as long as they make their money first. The chemicals that have been developed in the past 20 years are mind boggling.
But you do have the right to refuse a test.
Homestly better be safe than sorry. and the doctors were just doing their job. They have their own protocols so they won’t get sued. You have to understand both sides. And yes you right some adults are healthy inspite of them being exposed to asbestos or other chemicals. But you cannot predict your child’s genes and I would rather not risk anything.
We live in a VERY old house, it’s so old that the kitchen and the bedrooms are built on, I sat here one day and realized that at one point in time this house only had 4 basic rooms, all completely square, none of the rooms had pipes or anything, so I’m assuming it was build before running water and stoves.. the people that bought it re-did it all, made it a duplex, and we redid the upstairs. But because of this house my son now has to have tests like that also, they always come out fine, but I really hate to see my son scream for 10 minutes while they milk his finger. But I would rather him go through 10 minutes of pain then siffer from lead poisioning, we re-did everything, but I’m sure somewhere in this house theres still some lead paint.
I answered a question like this last night. The more scientists study the more we will realize that everything pretty much contains some kind of toxic chemical. And like I said in my answer on the other question, until everything is made of all natural clean air (which is impossible) it’s always something we will have to worry about. I’m pretty easy going about it… I stay away from stuff that has been recalled, and taken off of the shelves, and I do have my son regulary tested for lead, but other then that everything has a chemical in it now a days, and theres really no way to get around it unless you grow your own garden, raise your own animals, build your own house, out of natural wood that you cut yourself make your own furniture, and cleaning supplies. And lets face it no one has time for that!
