Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Article by Flack Law Office

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. In many cases it is directly correlated with occupational exposure to the toxic substance.

For a long time mesothelioma has been considered a mysterious and incurable disease. However, in the last twenty years, medical technology, scientists and researchers have come to learn more about the disease and its causes.

Fortunately, with more awareness about the disease, physicians have become more able to detect the cancer during the earlier stages so they can provide more forms of treatment.

This form of cancer occurs within the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of the body’s internal organs (mesothelium). In the medical world, there are two different types and they are based on what part of the mesothelium is affected. In the majority of cases, mesothelioma affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs. Other rarer forms affect the tissue in the abdomen, the heart and around the testicles.

Sadly, this is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer, where a cure is not usually achievable. There are treatments available, but in most cases the goal of the treatments is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

The most common form (pleural mesothelioma) affects the tissue surrounding the lungs. It causes specific signs and symptoms including: chest pain under the rib cage, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, painful coughing, lumps of tissue underneath the skin on the chest, and weight loss. Unfortunately, fluid in the chest can compress on the lung, making breathing exceptionally difficult for the patient.

Cancer begins with a series of genetic mutations within a cell, which causes the cell to grow and multiply at an unchecked pace. Risk factors for developing mesothelioma are directly linked to asbestos exposure. Direct exposure to asbestos fibers at someone’s work, or in their home greatly increases the risk. Even living with someone who works with asbestos or washing a spouse’s clothes that has the fibers on them can lead to mesothelioma. In fact, it is suggested that people who work with asbestos should shower and change clothes before leaving work and heading home.

These dangers have been nationally recognized. If a person handles asbestos in an unsafe manner that endangers those around them, or if they cause an asbestos injury as a result of recklessness or negligence, then the victim may have legal grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit. If you lost a loved one to mesothelioma, you may have cause for a wrongful death lawsuit against the legally liable party. An experienced attorney will be absolutely critical in pursuing just compensation in this matter. Do not speak with an insurance company without first discussing your case with an attorney, because if you do, they will likely offer you a settlement that is far below the true value of your claim. Contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your case today!

What are the Different Stages of Breast Cancer?

Article by Nick Mutt

On confirmation of the breast cancer from biopsy report, the doctors go through an extensive study about the extent or the stage of the cancer that will help to adopt the right type of treatment best suitable for the patient. Whether the cancer is localized or has spread to other parts of the body can be determined by staging that involves different types of screening including the blood test.

Bone scan is done by entering a small amount of radioactive substance into the blood vessel which gets collected in the bones, and the pictures taken confirm the spread of cancer to the bones.

CT scan of the breast cancer is done by taking pictures of the affected area through the X-rays to study whether the cancer has affected the lungs and liver.

Lymph node biopsy is done by inserting radioactive blue dye through a needle near the tumor or the nipple and checked for the cancerous lymphatic cells.

The different stages of breast cancer include -

Stage 0 – This stage can be also termed as Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which indicates that the abnormal cells of the breast duct have not spread outside or invaded other local tissues. This stage cannot be termed cancerous but if untreated can turn into breast cancer.

Stage I indicates the earliest stage of breast cancer where the tumor is not more than 2 centimeters and the cancerous cells have affected only the breast tissue not spreading beyond.

Stage II – This may include features -

1. The tumor size not more than 2 centimeters but the cancer has affected the under arm lymph nodes or the cancer is localized.

2. The tumor size is of 2-5 centimeter and the cancer affecting the underarm lymph nodes.

Stage III comprises of three stages like Stage IIIA, IIIB and IIIC.

In Stage IIIA tumor is 5centimeters length across and the cancer has spread to the under arm lymph nodes. The cancer may spread to the single or attached lymph nodes under the arm and it may also affect the lymph nodes behind the breast bone.

In Stage IIIB the tumor may be of any size that grows along the chest wall or on the breast skin forming lumps and nodules. The under arm lymph nodes and the lymph nodes behind the breast bone may also be affected.

In this stage the inflammatory breast cancer may also occur with the breast becoming red and swollen.

In Stage IIIC the tumor may be of any size with the cancer spreading to the lymph nodes of under arm, behind the breast bone and also including the lymphatic nodes of the collarbone.

Stage IV or the metastatic change indicates the spread of the breast cancer to other parts of the body like liver and bones.

What Treatments Are Available For Skin Cancer

Article by Glenn Payne

what treatments are available for skin cancer The stage of cancer that you have will determine which of the many skin cancer treatments are available for you. Each person’s medical condition and their power to resist treatment will decide which procedure is best for them. With skin cancer, do not put off going to the doctor. By discovering it early and beginning treatment you will be extending your probability of surviving because these treatments have an extremely high success rate. Different options for the treatment for basal cell carcinoma exists. One treatment is ‘Mohs Micrographic surgery’ which provides help in removing the cancer without removing the surrounding tissue which is healthy. With this procedure, successive layers of cancerous tissue is removed and examined. When the doctor continues to see cancer cells during the examination he’ll continue to remove the thin layers. This will allow the doctor to stop when the normal tissue is all that’s left. An ordinary incision may also be used to get rid of the skin cancer, however, some of the ordinary tissue will be removed along with it. Cryosurgery can be employed to freeze the skin cancer cells and kill them. The use of a laser to focus light that will kill the skin cancer cells. Radiation therapy could also be used for the treatment of skin cancer. The xray will be used to shrink and kill the skin cancer tumors. A lotion that uses chemotherapy may also be used topically to treat skin cancer. The chemical treatment will kill the skin cancer cells when the lotion is applied on the affected area. Each case of skin cancer is different and the options for treating it are determined by your doctor. You should be sure to chat about the different options and query side-effects and rate of success for each one. In order to make an informed decision, it’ll be important to have all the info. It’s critical to treat skin cancer in a way that hinders it from metastasizing to other body parts. If you are fortunate and catch it in the beginning stages, you’ll have a few options regarding treatment than if you find it in a late stage. Most important is that skin cancer be caught in its initial stage, in order to treat it with the best probabilities of cure. For that reason, a monthly self-examination is suggested.

Caring For The Elderly: Senior Illnesses And What They Mean To You

Article by Careplacementservices

As we get older, we all become more susceptible to illnesses, diseases and ailments that may render us incapacitated in some way, shape or form. In some cases we may not even recover from them. It is a sad fact, but we will all eventually shake hands with the very thing that is going to kill us. However, that is not to say that all senior illnesses are incurable. In fact, there are very few that are untreatable. If you happen to be a caregiver and look after a senior on a daily basis, then there are various diseases that you may actually come into contact with and learn how to cope with via that individual. It can be difficult watching someone you care about succumb to illness at any age, but with seniors it is inevitable. A little bit of background knowledge can help to prepare you for the worst, so here is a quick guide to senior illnesses:

CANCER – Over two thirds of all seniors are affected by cancer at some point in their lives. Some forms of cancer are more common than others. Lung and breast cancer are the most common forms as found in seniors, but skin cancer also puts in an appearance in the top senior afflictions list. Cancer can be treated with great effect these days but the older the sufferer is, the more the odds of a full recovery are cut. After all, how many eighty years olds are strong enough to come through a course of chemotherapy? Any form of cancer must be caught early if a patient is to stand any chance of recovery so bodily abnormalities must be checked out by a medical professional as soon as they are discovered.

DEMENTIA – A high number of seniors also suffer from dementia. There are many forms of dementia, but they all stem from decreasing brain activity owing to degradation and resultant damage to the connections between the brain and nerve endings in the body. The cause of dementia is not known and there can be little done to effectively treat it, although some drugs do hols off the symptoms for a while. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease, which is generally more potent than other versions of the illness. It can be extremely frustrating for sufferers because they gradually become more confused, although they will initially know what is happening to them. It may take anywhere between a few months to many years for the full symptoms to actually emerge, but when they do it is extremely unlikely that the sufferer will know who you are.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE – Again, this is a disease that affects the nerve cells leading to the brain and like, dementia, nobody knows exactly what is behind it. Whereas dementia will affect an individual mentally, Parkinson’s primarily disables the body and then moves onto the mind. It may be apparent that a sufferer has the disease because of uncontrollable shaking, which is just as frustrating as the confusion associated with dementia. Again, there is no known cure and drugs only work for a limited time before symptoms can no longer be controlled.

DIABETES – More and more seniors are suffering with this disease as a result of their lifestyles and, primarily, their diets. As sugar and fat intake increases, the body rebels. However, diabetes is an age-old ailment that is caused by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin to keep their blood sugar levels under control. It is incurable but can be treated either by diet or medication in tablet or injection form. It will not cause the death of an individual is treated correctly. However, particular attention has to be paid to wounds that diabetics have because they have a tendency to degenerate more quickly than those in non-diabetics. Amputation of limbs is also quite common as a result of the illness. It is therefore imperative that a diagnosis is swift and observations thereafter occur daily.

DO YOU THINK THERE COULD BE A CANCER RESEARCH CURE?

DO YOU THINK THERE COULD BE A CANCER RESEARCH CURE?

Article by Wayne R. Bennett

DO YOU THINK THERE COULD BE A CANCER RESEARCH CURE?

HAS THERE REALLY BEEN FOUND A ONE TIME CANCER RESEARCH CURE FOR BASICALLY ALL DISEASES?

Diseases from bladder, lung, skin, or even blood are able to be cured if this treatment is followed correctly. You can reach many goals. Those deadly diseases may well torment you, even once in your life. But in the back of the human mind is the belief that sooner or later there will be a cure for all diseases. What if there was a way to treat all this? Since the commencement of time, men have been searching for an element that could treat all ailments.

CONTAGIOUS AND NON CONTAGIOUS DISEASESMany deaths can be traced back to communicable diseases that in many cases could have been cured. Malaria, influenza and others continue to devastate people’s lives in a large amount of the Third-world countries at present.

SO WHAT IS THIS ONE MINUTE CURE?Many folks just don’t get enough oxygen into their bodies. You’re probably skeptical about it. A research study from all over Europe has proven that mainly diseases are being caused by lack of sufficient oxygen intakes into the body. Sufficient amounts of oxygen have got to be carried straight to the cells and tissues of the body.

ISN’T THIS A FANTASTIC DISCOVERY? A CANCER RESEARCH CURE AND ALSO OTHER DISEASES AS WELL?

YOU ARE ABOUT TO DISCOVER THIS GROUND BREAKING SCIENTIFIC CURE!A natural treatment can actually protect your body from common diseases. It does not literally heal your diseases but instead makes your body heal itself from the disease.

THIS TREATMENT IS MIND BLOWINGYour body will eventually build on accumulated toxins that are caused by low oxygen levels. Other folks say that these are toxins that have been eaten, come from the air around us or the substances that we take inside the body that cause this cancer. The second main concern is how to prevent from being exposed to these toxins.

WHY THEY SAY THERE IS NO CURE FOR CANCERThe pharma-cartel is so powerful it had the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ban information on a cancer cure because of a financial threat to the health industry. Everything is intended to create the wrong impression and that the only cure is the medicine prescribed by specialists.

THE FORMULA TO CURE CANCERSimply add a couple of drops of a natural solution to 8 to 10 ounces of distilled water. The One-Minute Cure explains that it puts the body cells and tissues to an oxygen-rich condition. It is performed by delivering fresh oxygen molecules to the main body for the cells. Carbon dioxides, carbon monoxides, and other air-borne gases are what we breathe everyday.

CANCER “INCURABLE”?Their is an energy burning process that is also called sugar fermentation. An explanation has to be known about the metabolism of these tough and weak cells. This process releases lactic acid and carbon monoxide (not carbon dioxide). This is shows how our cells are starved of the oxygen that we all need.

CONCLUSIONThese diseased cells are in actuality destroyed once they are in the presence of pure oxygen molecules. Worry no more because here comes the system that will help all of us and save us from having faulty and damaged cells.

Breast Cancer – Find Out What is Important

Breast Cancer – Find Out What is Important

Article by Brian Bowie

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Even though it is not as common in men, men should still be aware of it because they can get this disease as well. Early diagnosis is very important because breast cancer is the second most lethal cancer in women after lung cancer. To help you with an early diagnosis and hopefully a speedy recovery, you should learn more about this disease including its condition, its characteristics, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

The breast consists of milk producing glands that are connected to the opening of the skin in the nipple by ducts. Fat and fibrous breast tissue connect the gland and duct structure. In this area are blood vessels, lymph nodes and nerves like all the other parts of the human body.

One of the common areas for breast cancer to occur are in the milk ducts and milk glands. Cancer occurs when cells in this area become abnormal and start to grow rapidly. These cells will form a tumor. Most commonly breast cancer occurs in the milk ducts and in the milk glands. The tumors in the ducts are called ductal carcinomas, while the ones in the glands are called lobular carcinomas.

Breast cancer is normally defined by different stages. Normally it starts as a small lump, a tumor or calcium deposits. If not treated early, the cancer will start to spread to other areas of the breast. If the cancer reaches the lymph nodes, the cancer will then spread to other parts of the body through the blood stream. Some of the likely areas that cancer will show up in regards to the breast are the lungs, liver or bones.

It is not exactly known what causes breast cancer. However research has found some factors that seem to increase a woman’s chances of getting it. First women that have had benign tumors are more likely to get cancerous tumors in the future. Also immediate family members that have had the disease will increase your risk. For example if your mom or sister has had the disease, then you are at higher risk of getting breast cancer. If you have the following genes, BRCA1 or BRCA2, will also increase the risk. If you have been exposed to high levels of estrogen, then your risk level is higher. The following factors will also increase your risk: smoking, alcohol consumption, weight gain and obesity and lack of exercise.

In most cases your doctor will diagnose breast cancer with a mammography. A mammography is an x-ray that is designed to identify any changes in the breast tissue and abnormal growths, in particular. In most cases, your doctor will examine the breast to decide if a mammography is necessary or not.

The most common type of treatment is surgery and is either a mastectomy or lumpectomy. The doctor will remove the tumor, surrounding tissue and lymph nodes. After surgery, the doctor will likely use radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy to remove any abnormal cells. The doctor may also prescribe hormonal therapy and biological therapy.

The best thing that you can do to prevent breast cancer is screening on a regular basis. You should conduct a self exam as often as recommended by your doctor. Also you should get clinical exams and mammograms as often as recommended by your doctor. You also should consider ensuring that you eat a balanced low fat diet that is primarily plant based, reduce your consumption of alcohol, stop smoking and get plenty of exercise.

What is oral cancer?

Article by Norbert

Oral cancer is cancer occurring in the lips (usually affects the lower lip), inside the mouth, back of the throat, tonsils or salivary glands. It develops more frequently in men than in women, mostly in people in their forties. The main risk factor is smoking, in combination with the consumption of large quantities of alcohol.

If oral cancer is not detected early enough it may require surgery, radiotherapy and (or) chemotherapy. It can also lead to death – a five-year survival is observed in approximately 50% of patients with poor prognosis. Since at least partly due to un-spotting early signs, the detection of oral cancer is a decisive factor for the success of his treatment.

What are the symptoms of oral cancer? Because we are not always able to pick up early signs of oral cancer, the important role played by regular audits, both at the dentist and the doctor. The dentist is a person with adequate training to detect early warning signals that suggest oral cancer. Apart from periodic visits, however, should go to the dentist if you notice any of the following symptoms:

* painful change in the lips, gums or inside the mouth that bleeds easily and does not want to heal * language palpable lump or thickening in the cheek around * loss of sensation or numbness in the mouth * white or red patches on the gums, tongue or inside the mouth * difficulties with chewing or swallowing food * soreness or unexplained pain in the mouth, or a feeling that something is stuck in my throat for no apparent reason * swelling of the jaw that causes dentures fit bad* change of voiceHow can I prevent the development of oral cancer? If you do not smoke or chew tobacco do not, do not start! Tobacco use is responsible for 80 to 90 percent of oral cancers .** Smoking – the link between smoking and lung cancer and heart disease is undeniable. Smoking also negatively affects your overall health, making it difficult to fight infections and the process leading up to health after injury or surgery. In the case of youth smoking can lead to stunted growth and other developmental problems. Many smokers found that they less recognize odors and flavors at a time when not smoked. Their breathing becomes uncomfortable, and the tooth enamel becomes discolored.

Every time you light a cigarette, you are putting further oral health at risk. Smoking cigarettes, pipes or cigars increases the risk of developing cancer of the larynx, oral cavity and esophagus. Because so many people are not aware of early signs or symptoms they ignore, oral cancer is often spread before being detected.

** Chewing tobacco – chewing tobacco chronically exposed to 50-fold higher risk of developing oral cancer than other people. Best to avoid smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff use. People in cessation of tobacco use, even if they do it after many years of use, greatly reduce their risk of developing oral cancer. Chronic and (or) heavy alcohol use also increases the risk of cancer, with an extremely high risk of creating the combined use of tobacco and alcohol.

What is the treatment of oral cancer? After placing the diagnosis a team of professionals (including specialist in maxillofacial surgery and dentist) develops a treatment plan tailored to the needs of the individual patient. Usually, surgery is necessary, after which the patient is subjected to radio- and chemotherapy. It is important to report to the dentist, who knows what changes this treatment may result in the oral cavity.

Every time you consume food or drinks containing sugar or starch, bacteria in plaque produce acid, which for 20 minutes or more attacks your teeth. To limit damage to the enamel, limit the number of snacks and drinks consumed between meals. However, if you already eat snacks, choose nutritious items such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yogurt or fruit.

Is Sleep Apnea a Common Disorder?

Is Sleep Apnea a Common Disorder?

Article by Ann Crill

I did not understand why my brother was constantly tired and had no energy!

His wife was the first to suspect Sleep Apnea. After being diagnosed with this condition and getting treatment, there was a dramatic change in his ability to function during the day.

What we did not know was that Sleep Apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood.

Understanding More About Sleep Apnea:

Sleep Apnea is characterized by a complete or partial blocking of the upper airway, causing the person to have irregular breathing or to stop breathing for a span of approximately 10 to 20 seconds while asleep. This pattern continues several times throughout the night, usually without the person even knowing it.

While Apnea is much less prevalent than common Snoring, the medical implications associated with this disorder can be serious. As breathing becomes very shallow or stops, there is a drop in the blood oxygen level and a rise in the blood carbon dioxide level. When sufferers do not get the amount of oxygen needed this can put the person at serious health risk.

With poor quality sleep, this condition is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness which can lead to other health complications.

Interesting Facts About Sleep Apnea:

There are two main types of Sleep Apnea; Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA).

One out of 25 middle-aged men and one out of 50 middle-aged women have Sleep Apnea; and, it is one of the most prevalent of the breathing disorders of sleep.

People with Sleep Apnea are often less aware of their fatigue and sleepiness than are people with other types of sleep disturbances.

Help for Sleep Apnea Patients:

Sleeping on your side is a first step. Sleeping on your back allows your soft palate and uvula to relax into the back of your throat which obstructs your breathing pathways. By sleeping on your side, or in a prone position, you relieve some of the pressure put on your airways, allowing air to flow more freely, simultaneously reducing the volume of your snoring.

Sufferers are actually lucky that this is a vocal condition. As in my brother’s case, is often discovered by a concerned family member. The sooner it is discovered and treated the better, before it becomes life threatening. Sleep Apnea is a very serious condition and needs immediate attention from a Healthcare Professional who can properly diagnose and offer treatment options.

The good news is there are Natural Sleep Solutions available to help regain control of Snoring, Sleep Apnea Symptoms and other Generalized Sleep Disorders.

Improve Quality Of Life With The Latest Building Design Trends

Improve Quality Of Life With The Latest Building Design Trends

Article by MIKE SELVON

In the 1980s and 1990s, people were worried about lead paint fumes, fluorocarbons, asbestos and other toxic chemicals found in our homes and offices. This fear was so widespread that the news media dubbed it “Sick Building Syndrome.”

As a result, much attention has been focused on sustainable, energy-efficient, health-promoting building design. Making the necessary adjustments to your home may be as simple as choosing compact fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star appliances, or it may be as complex as trading in that dated carpet for recycled bamboo flooring.

Green interior design lighting is important because light sucks up electricity, generates heat and costs us money. A green lighting designer would tell you that compact fluorescent lamps are much more efficient than incandescent lamps, using 80% less energy. “CFLs last 10 times longer than incandescents and normally pay for themselves,” explains David Lee, a 23-year lighting designer with The Lighting Source.

Each bulb replaced with a CFL could save you on utility costs, experts say. Of course, since these bulbs contain mercury, disposing of them is just as critical when it comes to green building design. Home Depot stores have orange bins to collect and recycle these bulbs. For those who wish for sunnier lighting color, halogen lights still offer 30-40% energy savings, compared to incandescents, although they are not as good as CFLs.

Many eco-friendly consumers are also looking for green interior design furniture and furnishings too. As you may know, indoor air quality can be affected by mold, moisture, organic compound emissions from paints, and formaldehyde emissions from cabinets and ventilation systems. Some building design materials collect contaminants and dirt as well.

When shopping, you will want to avoid phenolic resin derived plastic laminate found on inexpensive furniture. Make sure your wood products are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council to ensure the harvesters followed sustainable building practices.

Wool that has not been treated with moth-proofing chemicals is preferable to polyester. Beware of polyurethane foam padding that contains polybrominated diphenol ethers, which are flame retardants.

The latest building design trends will focus on improving the quality of life and our planet in an affordable way. “Sustainable development allows economic progress and environmental quality to be compatible goals,” said Christine Ervin, Department of Energy assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy. “Communities are finding that sustainable development strategies save taxpayer money, improve the profits of local businesses, and make the community much more livable.”

Tobacco and Oral Cancer

Tobacco and Oral Cancer

Article by Apollo Hospitals

Misuse of tobacco can be done in many ways and especially in India, the habit of chewing tobacco is responsible for an epidemic of oral cancer, of a magnitude not seen anywhere else in the world.

Cancer of the oral cavity is one of the most common cancers in India. 9.5% of all cancers and one-third of all head and neck cancers arise in the oral cavity. About 56,000 new cases occur each year and at any given year more than 100,000 individuals are suffering from oral cancer. 7% of all cancer deaths in males and 4 % in females are due to this disease.

Oral cancer includes cancer of the lip, tongue, gum (gingivum), and floor of mouth, cheek, hard palate and the retromolar trigone. Of this, in the Indian population, majority is located in the area comprised of the cheek (Buccal Mucosa), Gingivum and the retromolar trigone together termed as the Gingivo-buccal complex. Cancers located in the G-B complex have been proved both epidemiologically and experimentally to be related to the habit of chewing tobacco in the form of betel quid or “Paan (a combination of betel leaf, lime, areca nut and tobacco) and are therefore aptly termed as “The Indian Oral Cancer”. In the west, the tongue and floor of the mouth form the predominant oral cancer.

Ninety percent of oral cancers can be attributed to specific etiologic agents, the most important being the habit of chewing and smoking tobacco in various forms. The risk of oral cancer is increased 8 – fold in those who chew tobacco (in the form of paan zarda, etc.) as compared with non-chewers. The risk rises in those who chew more than 6 times per day and in those who retain the quid in the mouth overnight the risk is alarmingly high. Tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSN’s) are found in high concentration in the juice produced by chewing tobacco and are carcinogenic. Experimentally, the betel quid has shown to produce tumors in the Hamster cheek pouch.Although the tobacco in the betel quid is the agent mainly responsible for the development of cancers, the lime paste (calcium hydroxide) which is used along with it also contributes to stimulating carcinogenesis by its local irritant action. The areca nut when chewed releases alkaloids, which causes oral sub-mucosa fibrosis, a pre-cancerous condition. The betel leaf by itself does not contribute to carcinogenesis and in fact may reduce cancer risk in the quid by diluting the carcinogens released from the chewed tobacco. In-addition to the habit of chewing tobacco, other etiologic agents which play a role in the causation of oral cancers include tobacco smoking, alcohol and diet.Reverse smoking which is practiced in parts of Andhra Pradesh, western Orissa and Goa causes cancer of the palate and posterior tongue. Smoking of marijuana has shown in some studies in the US to be responsible for causing oral cancers in the younger population.Since 90 percent of oral cancers are caused by specific etiologic agents, they should be preventable.Eliminating the use of tobacco in various forms (paan, zarda, paan masala) through control programs and public education can go a long way in reducing the incidence of oral cancer. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated in the west where the incidence of lung cancer has come down drastically in the last decade with heightened public awareness about the effects of smoking. In India due to varied culture, habits and educational levels, an active anti-tobacco policy in addition may be the only way to ensure a no tobacco generation.Visit Apollo Center of Excellence for Oncology.

How Do You Stop Smoking?

how do you get cancer

How Do You Stop Smoking?

Article by Richard

How do you stop smoking? Or how do I stop smoking? Is a question nearly every smoker asks themselves after they’ve been doing it for a few years and the novelty’s worn off, in fact it’s usually the most enjoyable when we are teenagers and “Not Supposed To”.But once the not supposed to phase passes and no one gives a hoot anymore whether we smoke or not, then most of us view it as a habit that’s slightly holding us back, holding us back financially and physically! And the more time that passes and the longer we smoke the more clear it becomes that what we thought was a friend Is indeed an enemy! And a sneaky, powerful stubborn one at that! But like everything that’s negative and annoying it can be removed from our lives, and the fact that your even reading this means you’re already halfway there because you Want To Stop! And once you’ve stopped you’ll be able to throw the window open in the morning and take in all those smells you couldn’t before, Petrol, dog sh*t and other peoples smoke. And this is all you have to do to get rid of cigarettes for good, you need to be blunt with yourself and say”I’m going to feel tense, irritated, slightly unwell and generally not quite myself for the next 4 to 6 weeks”Now this is obviously a terrible way to feel and why would anyone self-impose this!? (the smoker within you will ask)And the best answer I can think of is that feeling irritated for 6 weeks is about a billion times better than dying of lung cancer, developing emphysema (severe weakening of the lungs which leads to death, and a lot of discomfort first), suffering a heart attack or suffering any of the other medical nasty’s that no one in their right mind wants to get!I’m 31 and stopped smoking 6 years ago, it wasn’t easy, and for the first week or so you’re having an almost constant argument with yourself about whether to have one or not, this is just the drug trying to trick you and you will actually notice when this starts to ease off. As soon as it does you will realize that this is actually do-able and you’ll feel instantly more confident about your decision.Once you get to this stage your system will start to realise it’s not dragging the millstone anymore and your energy levels will start to increase, this is a great time to start some sort of physical activity, whether it’s getting into a new sport, rediscovering an old one or just walking your dog a bit further this is a great way to keep you away from going back to smoking. Also the longer you stop the less likely you will be to go back, because you won’t want to go through the first week or two ever again! After you’ve been stopped for about 2 or 3 months you’ll wonder why you ever smoked in the first place, this is a great stage to get to because you’ve pretty much beaten it, but you need to be careful. Every now and then you’ll still get a slight craving, but all you need to do when this happens is show the same strength of mind you did when you initially stopped. One last thing that you need to understand (and overstand!) is that you need to avoid all alcohol in your first 2 months of stopping, indeed avoid any situation where you’ll be drinking and surrounded by smokers, because 2 things will happen.• They will offer you cigarettes• And they will make fun of you for stopping (because you stopping highlights there weakness) You don’t need eyther of these things when you’re trying to get past your addiction. So to re-cap, it is hard at first but if you stick to it you will basically become an upgraded, stronger, healthier, springier version of yourself. Thanks for reading and good luck with stopping-I hope you do it.

What Is Mesothelioma?

What Is Mesothelioma?

Article by Jim Cherry

Mesothelioma, as its name suggests, is a type of cancer that targets the mesothelium, the protective membranes that line the thoracic, abdominal and pericardial cavities as well as the tunica vaginalis testis in males and the tunica serosa uteri in females.

This article has been provided for informational purposes only on behalf of the asbestos lawyer Goldberg & Osborne.

Mesothelioma is characterized by the proliferation of aggressive tumors that, in the latter stages of the disease, invade adjacent tissues and organs. In all but a handful of the 2,000 to 3,000 cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the United States every year, medical scientists have conclusively linked mesothelioma to a medical history that’s positive for asbestos exposure.

How Does Asbestos Exposure Cause Mesothelioma?

Asbestos is the name given to a group of six fibrous, naturally occurring minerals that share certain properties that, over many centuries, have made them highly prized. Asbestos is extremely lightweight but also extremely flexible and strong; moreover, asbestos is resistant to heat and flame which is very useful in industrial applications. Asbestos has been used in every conceivable contemporary context, in homes, factories, ships, hospitals, railroads, hospitals and schools.

Because asbestos is so flexible, it was easily configured into this vast array of products. The problems occurred on jobsites when these asbestos-containing materials were reconfigured for use, hammered, cut, sawed and otherwise reshaped. When these asbestos-containing products were prepped for use in this way, clouds of dust containing thousands of asbestos fibers was released into the air. Workers at these jobsites inhaled this dust and the needle-sharp asbestos microfibers lodged in their lungs. Coughing expelled many of these microfibers: Not everyone exposed to asbestos went on to develop an asbestos-related disease.

But in a large number of cases, the asbestos particles remained embedded in workers’ lungs, occasionally traveling from there to other parts of their bodies. Once deeply embedded in sensitive tissues, asbestos particles precipitated inflammatory responses that over time gave rise to pathological cell changes, the precursors to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Mesothelioma Identified As a Disease

The link between asbestos and pulmonary disease has been recognized for 2,000 years since the Roman statesman and physician Pliny the Elder first described the lingering lung malady that beset slaves assigned to weave asbestos fibers into cloth.

In the early 1900s, public health officials in Great Britain observed an alarming incidence of lung diseases among workers in asbestos textile factories. In 1930, a study commissioned by the British government definitively identified asbestosis, a chronic, fibrotic pulmonary condition, as an occupational disease associated with asbestos exposure.

But it wasn’t until after World War II that mesothelioma itself was first identified. The discovery took place in a South African hospital adjacent to a large asbestos mine.

The hospital treated a large number of patients suffering from lung disease. Much of that disease was tuberculosis. But while treatment cured tubercular patients, patients suffering from what was characterized as “atypical lung disease” did not recover. Medical researchers at the hospital began studying this phenomenon and in 1950, presented definitive evidence showing the connection between the disease, now called mesothelioma, and asbestos exposure.

People Are Still Being Diagnosed With Mesothelioma

In the late 1970s, federal agencies began regulating the occupational use of asbestos in the United States. But mesothelioma is characterized by a prolonged latency interval: typically a mesothelioma diagnosis is made anywhere from between 20 to 50 years after the initial asbestos exposure has taken place. In the United States many people who last worked with asbestos in the 1960s and 1970s are being diagnosed with mesothelioma today.

Lung Cancer and Smoking – What’s Your Brand?

how is lung cancer caused
by Judge Rock

Lung Cancer and Smoking – What’s Your Brand?

Article by Beryl Cornel, M.D.

Lung cancer…when we hear these two words, we readily think of a deadly disease. Which is definitely true if it is not diagnosed early or if it is left untreated.

Carcinoma of the lungs is one of the most difficult cancers to treat and the reality is that it is often diagnosed in very late stages. And at these point in time, going for a cure is often very hard.

Because of these factors, lung tumors has one of the lowest survival outcomes of any type of cancer. Overall, of all people diagnosed at all stages, only about 20 out of every 100 people (20 percent) will live for at least 1 year after diagnosis.  About 6 out of every 100 people diagnosed (percent) will live for at least 5 years after diagnosis.  And about 5 out of every 100 will live for at least 10 years. For those who are able to have surgery to remove their cancer, about 20 out of 100 (20 percent) are alive 5 years later.

What is lung cancer?

It is a disease which involves a growth of abnormal cells inside the lungs. These cells grow out of control and reproduce at a very fast rate. Because of their uncontrolled growth, they form a mass called a tumor. If this abnormal group of cells begins in the lung, it is known as a primary lung cancer.

There are 2 types of lung ca: NSCLC or non small cell lung cancer and SCLC or small cell lung cancer. The type is determined by how they behave in the body and by how the cancers respond to a specific type of treatment like chemotherapy or surgery or radiation theraphy. They are also determined by how the cells look under the microscope. The most common type is NSCLC, which accounts for 80 percent of all cancer tumors.

Some facts and statistics:

1. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in the world – causing more deaths than breast and prostate cancer put together.

2. Every 30 seconds, someone, somewhere in the world dies from cancer of the lungs. 3. 40 percent of smokers who start smoking in their early teens and continue to smoke will not live to claim their pension. 4. Only 1 in every 10 people are alive 5 years after diagnosis. 5. Recent studies indicate that women are more susceptible than men. 6. Women smokers are twice as likely to develop lung cancer than male smokers. Even among non-smokers women’s risk of developing lung tumors is higher than men. 7. Women also have a more difficult time overcoming nicotine addiction than men. Cancer ranks as number 3 in the top 10 leading causes of mortality in the Philippines. WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?

Since cancer is a deadly disease, it would be very prudent if we take steps in preventing the occurrence of lung related cancers, rather than waiting for it to occur and treating it.

Therefore, it is important to recognize and identify the factors which can increase the chance of developing these types of cancers.

1. Cigarette smoking and tobacco smoking is responsible for 90% of lung cancers in males and 65 % in females. Where there is cigarette smoking, there is definitely poison!

Some of the more common ingredient and their effect on the body are:

*Arsenic is one of the most dangerous chemicals in cigarettes. It can cause cancer as well as damaging the heart and its blood vessels.

* Benzene is an important industrial solvent and is used in the production of drugs, plastics, synthetic rubber, and dyes. Benzene is a natural component of crude oil. It is a well known fact that benzene can cause cancer, especially leukemia. Tobacco smoke contains large amounts of benzene and accounts for a big proportion of our exposure to this poison. The average smoker inhales about ten times more benzene than the average non-smoker. Some studies have estimated that the amount of benzene that a person inhales through second-hand smoke over their lifetime could increase their risk of cancer.

* Formaldehyde is a chemical used to kill bacteria, embalm dead bodies and manufacture other chemicals. It is one of the substances in tobacco smoke most likely to cause diseases in our lungs and airways. Formaldehyde is also a known cause of cancer. It is believed that even the small amounts in second-hand smoke could increase our lifetime risk of cancer. Tobacco smoke is one of our major sources of formaldehyde exposure. Places where people smoke can have three times the normal levels of this poison.

* Hydrogen cyanide is a poisonous gas. Of all the chemicals in tobacco smoke, it does the most damage to the heart and blood vessels. Hydrogen cyanide does not cause cancer, but it increases the risk of other chemicals causing cancer by damaging cilia. These are tiny hairs lining the airways that help to clear poisons away. By killing the cilia of the lungs, hydrogen cyanide causes other dangerous chemicals to be stuck in the lungs and airways.

Knowing that these dangerous chemicals are included in the cigarettes and tobacco people smoke, this should encourage people to stop smoking so that we can decrease the incidence of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the person who currently smokes 1 pack of cigarettes per day have a 25% higher chances of developing lung cancer, than the people who doesn’t smoke.

2. Second hand smoke – This is also known as passive smoking. These are  people who are regularly exposed to second hand smoke ( wives of husbands whoa re heavy smokers, or people who in areas wherein there are a lot of smokers), but do not smoke themselves. Unfortunately, and of course, unfairly have a 24% grater risk of developing lung cancer than most non-smokers. They have estimated that about 3000 deaths due to lung cancer in a year can be ascribed to 2nd hand smoke.

3. Radon gas – This is a colorless gas that is  are a lot of granite. Fortunately, in our country, there are only isolated pockets of this naturally occurring radon gas. So in our country, radon gas is not much of a major risk factor for developing lung cancer.

4. Air pollution – Scientists have estimated that 1 %  s can be attributed to air pollution. It is even believed that prolonged exposure to polluted air will raise the risk of lung cancer to as that of a passive smoker. Air pollution is a problem of our country, we have a lot of coal-fired factories, our jeepneys and buses are smoke belchers which contributes to the unhealthy levels of airborne particulate matters found in Metro Manila.

Of all these risk factors, the most important factor that we should try to control is cigarette smoking, since this causes 90% of all lung cancer cases.

LUNG CANCER AND SMOKING

It is a well known fact that the people who smoke cigarettes are at a higher risk of developing lung tumors, and even passive smoking increases lung cancer risk. Some people claim that low tar cigarettes are safer to smoke, but the reality is that it does not reduce the risk of developing cancer. It might feel smoother and lighter on the throat, but it definitely is not healthier than the regular cigarettes. The truth is that light cigarettes do not reduce the health risks of smoking. There is no such thing as a safe cigarette.

To further emphasize the dangers of cigarette smoking, the ad Marlboro country popularized the coolness of smoking, however the 3 actors who played the Marlboro man (Wayne Mclaren, David McLean and Dick Hammer) both died of lung cancer, years after they appeared in the ad campaigns for Marlboro cigarettes.

Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer all over the world. And it is one of the most lethal cancers present. Therefore, we should all make an effort to decrease the incidence of this dreaded disease and prevent the further rise of lung tumors. The first thing that we must do is to control the risk factors for cancer of the lungs that can be modified, and that is to help people to quit smoking. This way, we can drastically reduce the people who will have cancer because of smoking and because of passive smoking.

We must exert extra effort to control the increasing incidence of this disease. This way we would be able to save more people, and stop the occurrence of lung cancer.

Because if we do not advocate people to stop smoking, we will probably be the ones telling our friends that we have the dreaded disease called Lung Cancer.

Brain TumorWhat is the brain? The brain is a soft, spongy mass of tissue. It is protected by the bones of the skull and three thin membranes called meninges. Watery fluid called cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain. This fluid flows through spaces between the meninges and through spaces within the brain called ventricles.A network of nerves carries messages back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. Some nerves go directly from the brain to the eyes, ears, and other parts of the head. Other nerves run through the spinal cord to connect the brain with the other parts of the body. Within the brain and spinal cord, glial cells surround nerve cells and hold them in place.

The three major parts of the brain control different activities:

* Cerebrum – The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It is at the top of the brain. It uses information from our senses to tell us what is going on around us and tells our body how to respond. It controls reading, thinking, learning, speech, and emotions.

The cerebrum is divided into the left and right cerebral hemispheres, which control separate activities. The right hemisphere controls the muscles on the left side of the body. The left hemisphere controls the muscles on the right side of the body.

* Cerebellum – The cerebellum is under the cerebrum at the back of the brain. The cerebellum controls balance and complex actions like walking and talking. * Brain Stem – The brain stem connects the brain with the spinal cord. It controls hunger and thirst. It also controls breathing, body temperature, blood pressure, and other basic body functions.

What are benign and malignant ?can be benign or malignant: * Benign brain tumors do not contain cancer cells: o Usually, benign tumors can be removed, and they seldom grow back. o The border or edge of a benign can be clearly seen. Cells from benign tumors do not invade tissues around them or spread to other parts of the body. However, benign tumors can press on sensitive areas of the brain and cause serious health problems. o Unlike benign tumors in most other parts of the body, benign are sometimes life threatening. o Very rarely, a benign brain tumor may become malignant.

* Malignant brain tumors contain cancer cells: o Malignant are generally more serious and often are life threatening. o They are likely to grow rapidly and crowd or invade the surrounding healthy brain tissue. o Very rarely, cancer cells may break away from a malignant and spread to other parts of the brain, to the spinal cord, or even to other parts of the body. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

What are primary ?Tumors that begin in brain tissue are known as primary tumors of the brain. (Information about secondary brain tumors appears in the following section.) Primary brain tumors are named according to the type of cells or the part of the brain in which they begin.

The most common primary brain tumors are gliomas. They begin in glial cells. There are many types of gliomas:

* Astrocytoma – The tumor arises from star-shaped glial cells called astrocytes. In adults, astrocytomas most often arise in the cerebrum. In children, they occur in the brain stem, the cerebrum, and the cerebellum. A grade III astrocytoma is sometimes called an anaplastic astrocytoma. A grade IV astrocytoma is usually called a glioblastoma multiforme. * Brain stem glioma – The tumor occurs in the lowest part of the brain. Brain stem gliomas most often are diagnosed in young children and middle-aged adults. * Ependymoma – The tumor arises from cells that line the ventricles or the central canal of the spinal cord. They are most commonly found in children and young adults. * Oligodendroglioma – This rare tumor arises from cells that make the fatty substance that covers and protects nerves. These tumors usually occur in the cerebrum. They grow slowly and usually do not spread into surrounding brain tissue. They are most common in middle-aged adults.

Some types of brain tumors do not begin in glial cells. The most common of these are:

* Medulloblastoma – This tumor usually arises in the cerebellum. It is the most common brain tumor in children. It is sometimes called a primitive neuroectodermal tumor. * Meningioma – This tumor arises in the meninges. It usually grows slowly.

What are secondary brain tumors? When cancer spreads from its original place to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. Cancer that spreads to the brain from another part of the body is different from a primary brain tumor. When cancer cells spread to the brain from another organ (such as the lung or breast), doctors may call the tumor in the a secondary tumor or metastatic tumor. Secondary tumors in the brain are far more common than primary brain tumors.

What causes and who is at risk for brain tumors? No one knows the exact causes of . Doctors can seldom explain why one person develops a and another does not. However, it is clear that brain tumors are not contagious. No one can “catch” the disease from another person.Research has shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop a brain tumor. A risk factor is anything that increases a person’s chance of developing a disease. The following risk factors are associated with an increased chance of developing a primary brain tumor:

* Being male – In general, brain tumors are more common in males than females. However, meningiomas are more common in females. * Race – Brain tumors occur more often among white people than among people of other races. * Age – Most brain tumors are detected in people who are 70 years old or older. However, are the second most common cancer in children. (Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer.)are more common in children younger than 8 years old than in older children. * Family history – People with family members who have gliomas may be more likely to develop this disease. * Being exposed to radiation or certain chemicals at work: o Radiation – Workers in the nuclear industry have an increased risk of developing a brain tumor. o Formaldehyde – Pathologists and embalmers who work with formaldehyde have an increased risk of developing brain cancer. Scientists have not found an increased risk of brain cancer among other types of workers exposed to formaldehyde. o Vinyl chloride – Workers who make plastics may be exposed to vinyl chloride. This chemical may increase the risk of .

These are the most common symptoms of brain tumors:

* Headaches (usually worse in the morning) * Nausea or vomiting * Changes in speech, vision, or hearing * Problems balancing or walking * Changes in mood, personality, or ability to concentrate * Problems with memory

What is the treatment for brain tumors? Many people with brain tumors want to take an active part in making decisions about their medical care. They want to learn all they can about their disease and their treatment choices. However, shock and stress after a diagnosis of a brain tumor can make it hard to think of everything to ask the doctor. It often helps to make a list of questions before an appointment. To help remember what the doctor says, patients may take notes or ask whether they may use a tape recorder. Some also want to have a family member or friend with them when they talk to the doctor – to take part in the discussion, to take notes, or just to listen.

The doctor may refer the patient to a specialist, or the patient may ask for a referral. Specialists who treat brain tumors include neurosurgeons, neurooncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. The patient may be referred to other health care professionals who work together as a team. The medical team may include a nurse, dietitian, mental health counselor, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist. Children may need tutors to help with schoolwork. (The section on “Rehabilitation” has more information about therapists and tutors.)

Getting a second opinionBefore starting treatment, the patient might want a second opinion about the diagnosis and the treatment plan. Some insurance companies require a second opinion; others may cover a second opinion if the patient or doctor requests it.There are a number of ways to find a doctor for a second opinion:

* The patient’s doctor may refer the patient to one or more specialists. At cancer centers, several specialists often work together as a team.

Who To Side With

Who To Side With

Article by Carl Kinnebrew

Perhaps your old aluminum siding has outlived its day. It has been on your house for forty some years, and it shows it. You would like to make a change and you would like to do the work yourself. Before jumping into anything, you had better give it some thought.

The aluminum siding was put on your house for a reason. It is covering up damaged siding that was original to the house, or worse yet, asbestos siding. Removing aluminum siding is not hard at all, but be prepared for what you might find underneath. If you find asbestos siding underneath, you will have to find a professional who has the means to remove it. If you have other siding problems, you may first have to address them before applying new siding. It is best to find a section of the house in the back, perhaps around a window, where you can peel back a small area to see what is underneath before proceeding.

Assuming that you are good to go, you need to take a trip to your local home improvement store. Most home improvement stores have a wide variety of building material siding. There are probably some house siding alternatives that you have not even considered. By browsing the siding section of the store, you may get a new home siding idea.

Most people choose vinyl siding because it is somewhat easy to install. There is an array if house vinyl siding colors to choose from. Should you need help, Home Depot siding installation instructions are available. You may want to consider vinyl siding and replacement windows. Your home improvement store can help you here also.

If you decide to go with a house siding alternative such as cedar lapboard siding, there is a lot more that you will have to know. Before doing any installation, you must acclimatize the wood first. That means that you must stack the wood by your house, off the ground, covered from the elements, but allowing air to flow between the planks. This is so the boards will swell or contract before being applied. You also need to apply finish to all sides of the boards before installation. There are certain types of nails to use, furring strips, vapor barriers, and a whole lot more to learn before applying cedar lap siding.

Before you start ripping that siding off of you house, give this some thought. If you feel that this project is more than you can handle, then consult a siding and window contractor. You may just want to do the preparation work and have the contractor finish the job.

It is always best to side with the right people.

Pancreatic Cancer Survival Time

Pancreatic Cancer Survival Time

Article by Karl Dorads

Pancreatic cancer is usually a diagnosis which means the survival of the patient is in months or a couple of years. The tumours which originate from the pancreas are locally advanced by the time it is even detected by the usual clinical methods. The tumour may also spread to distant organs in advanced cases. The symptoms of pancreatic cancer are very few and they are seen only when the cancer is locally advanced. This makes the pancreatic cancer survival time much less as compared to other cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 5%. Even for those with local disease the 5-year relative survival rate is only 16%.

Overall, fewer than 5% of all patients are still alive 5 years after initial diagnosis. The collective median survival time of all patients is 4-6 months. The best predictors of long-term survival after surgery are a tumour diameter of less than 3 cm, no nodal involvement, and negative resection margins. The staging of pancreatic cancer is the best indicator of survival of a patient. The pancreatic cancer survival time depends on the extent to which the cancer has invaded the body. Local or resectable cancer which comprises about ten percent of all cases has the best cancer survival time. In this case the disease is confined only to the pancreas and is clearly separated from the surrounding blood vessels. The treatment options are surgery, and chemotherapy and radiation post operative. The median survival time in this stage is 17 months.

When the patient is in the second stage the cancer is usually so locally advanced that it cannot be removed by surgery. This means the cancer encases or compresses blood vessels which make surgery impossible. The cancer may also invade and destroy the surrounding organs. This stage makes up about 30% of all pancreatic cancer cases. The treatment in this case is usually chemotherapy which is most commonly gemcitabine-based and may be combined with radiation. This type of multi – modality therapy is associated with better survival rates. In very rare instances, cancers that respond well to initial treatment may subsequently be surgically resected. The pancreatic cancer survival time in this case is eight or nine months.

The last stage has the worst pancreatic cancer survival time. This is called the metastatic stage where the cancer is not limited to the surrounding organs but also affects distant ones. The liver is most commonly involved in this stage and the chances of survival in this stage are very bleak. Unfortunately, most cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in this stage only. Approximately 60% of all pancreatic cancer cases are in the metastatic stage where chemotherapy is the only modality available. Gemcitabine based chemotherapy is the standard treatment in this stage where the median survival time is 4 to 6 months. The therapy also aims at relieving patient symptoms like jaundice or bowel obstruction with surgery and medication to relieve pain.
