HISTORY has a way of catching up with James Hardie.

Russell Chenu rejoined the company as interim chief financial officer late last year, with the special responsibility of finding a solution to the massive funding shortfall in the foundation Hardie set up in 2001 to meet future asbestos disease claims.

Two decades earlier, Chenu finished a 13-year stint working for James Hardie as a young finance executive in Australia and Indonesia and saw some of his colleagues contract ghastly diseases, including asbestosis and the lung cancer mesothelioma.

This time around, he was determined to make a difference.
