I’ve looked up information on the Internet about lung cancer for a friend of mine, but I didn’t quite understand. Here are a few questions that have been troubling me.

1. Can you inherite lung cancer from your first degree relatives?

2. If you DO have lung cancer, is it often that people just die from it at an early age, like in their 20s? And if so, is it a sudden death or can you at least last for a couple of years?

3. If you don’t smoke nor do you spend time with people that do smoke, is it still possible for you to get lung cancer?

Please include as much detail as possible. I’ve had family who died of lung cancer and I just want to learn more about it.

Its not hereditary. In most cases lung cancer is found late and nothing can be done and you slowly die. If you find it soon enough you may be able to prolong your life . Just depends if it has spread. Yes Im sure you can get lung cancer even if you do not smoke or not around smoke . Your chances are probably pretty low however.

I quit smoking because I want a healthier life, and I like to be able to breath. I want some ideas on how to regain strength in my lungs. I not have Bronchitis and trust me it’s not my highlight of life. I’d love some natural ways to get rid of this.

My father smoked his whole life (he’s 52). He quit when he was 48 or so, he had an MRI done awhile back and his lungs were in poor condition, got another MRI done months ago and now – doctors say they’re 100% healthy.

I’m not sure if anything would help speed up the process. Just get fresh air!

I had a lung infection since just before May 19th,,it took 4 xrays,,CTscan,,,Petscan,,then a broncoscopy to find it. The doctor put me on CIPRO 500mg 2 times a day for a WEEK. Then he told me I was cleared up,,just by listening with his stethascope. It’s been 11days since I finished the Cipros,,,Should I still be weak and negative. I’m 69

When i was in my twenties I had a pretty bad bout of pneumonia. Didn’t get any meds, but it took me close to a week to feel better after it broke.

You were sick for over a month before they figured it out, took strong anti-biotics and (no disrespect) you’re 69. I’m not surprised you’re still a bit weak.

Do you feel stronger than a week ago? A couple of days ago? If yes, you should be fine. If you’re not feeling any stronger, call the doctor.

my little sister has Cystic Fibrosis and had a lung transplant recently, she’s very sick in general, and is not able to do anything on her own, is helpless, we also have to diaper her because she can’t control anything. I help take care of her a lot, i just want to know what the best way to avoid bed sores/rashes is and also how often is best to give a sponge bath? She’s 13 and very small/thin for her age.

That’s great to hear that you are helping to take care of your sister…

But to try and avoid bed sores, make sure that you are constantly checking her diaper ever so often so that she is not lying in her feces/urine for too long. Also, so that a rash does not occur, use vaseline to keep her moist.

Also, it may be best to give her a sponge bath at least twice a day since she cannot physically get into a shower.

A study published this week has shown that smoking-related deaths bypass all the natural indicators of mortality, namely sex and class. Normally those of a higher social class and woman have considerably longer life spans, but researchers from Glasgow University and NHS Scotland have discovered that non-smokers in the bottom social tiers had a longer life expectancy than smokers in the two highest social tiers, reversing the data normally gathered when smoking is not a factor.

Of those who were the least socially advantaged, 56% of women and 36% of men who had never smoked after 28 years of monitoring were still alive compared to 41% of female and 24% of male smokers in the highest social strata. The study is one of the first to gather long-term data about the impact smoking has on health, following 15,000 people from the West of Scotland since 1972. In The British Medical Journal the researchers concluded that “in essence, neither affluence nor being female offers a defence against the toxicity of tobacco.”

The study gave considerable weight to the NHS’s drive to encourage smokers to quit, as it also proved that amongst those who had quit, death rates of ex-smokers were far closer to those of the people who had never smoked, proving that kicking the habit really can impact on long-term health. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said, “This research reinforces the message that stopping smoking – or never taking up the habit – is the biggest single thing anyone can do to improve their health.”

At the moment it is estimated that 23% of the adult population smoke, with some areas seeing that figure rise to closer to 40%. Scotland has a particularly high rates. I should let you know a little something about myself. I have asthma and I recently went to the doctors yesterday and asked them to check my lungs because I had symptoms of a cold (no fever, clear yellow phlem) and a bad cough (got better) which happened to be a viral infection. Viral infections (bronchitis? my doc was unable to see me so i saw another one and she didnt tell me if it it was bronchitis or not… i think it is) will go away on its own, but this rattle/audible vibration occurs right after an inhalation? Idk if you would call it wheezing because I know what wheezing feels like. I have found that out today and it is making me paranoid. Whats wrong with me? :/

I have also read that people who have COPD can develop lung cancer… do you think i might have this? I am only 21

Most likely it is just related to the cough you had and will disappear in a few days. I do not think you have COPD or lung cancer.
