2011 Ethel Fleming Arceneaux Outstanding Nurse-Oncologist Award
Nancy Tomczak, a clinical nurse in the inpatient stem cell transplant unit at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is the recipient of the 2011 Ethel Fleming Arceneaux Outstanding Nurse-Oncologist Award, presented by The Brown Foundation, Inc. A committee of MD Anderson’s clinical faculty, patient care administration and nursing staff reviewed nominations sent from peers and patients alike, before selecting three finalists and ultimately announcing Tomczak as the choice for the annual award. Established by the foundation in 1982, the award is the institution’s highest nursing honor. Tomczak received a cash award of 000, a crystal plaque and a commemorative pin at a ceremony on June 22. John Mendelsohn, MD, president of MD Anderson, led the ceremony. “I’m so honored by this award,” says Tomczak, of Waller. “The moment was especially monumental for me because I remember being on the unit 10 years ago when Joyce Neumann, one of my nursing idols, won this award. I’m truly overwhelmed.” At age 8, after witnessing her grandmother succumb to lung cancer, Tomczak made it her mission to help fight what she calls “the beast.” Her passion was only fueled more by surviving a life threatening car accident, at age 16, which left her recovering from disfiguring injuries. “Were it not for the care of the dedicated health care workers at my bedside, I could have easily fallen into a black hole of self pity,” she says. “Instead, I walked out of the hospital months ahead of …

Stephen Harper and his Reformist-Conservatives are moving full-speed-ahead with their corporate business plans, at the expense of the people and our natural recourses. Harper has already turned a large surplus into a huge deficit. His plan to finance his projects seems to be to shift it onto the provinces, by forcing them to handle the majority of healthcare costs and to build his prisons for him. Besides the expected, they plan to “reform the immigration system to make it faster, to better fill in gaps in workforce.” What “gaps”? I’m not sure. Perhaps they just refer to needed specialists and “workforce” was just an error in wording. They want to “build and renovate schools on reserves” with communities and “stake holders” in mind. Surely these won’t be private schools…”stake holders” may just be more poor wording for referring to those who might benefit from educated workers, etc. And of course oil, gas, mining and forestry will be boosted with “smart regulations” to review processes will be “streamlined” in a “clearly defined time period”. Elizabeth May of the Green Party has expressed concern that they will be completely ignoring or even demolishing programs and services who protect or regulate these industries in respect to our natural recourses. Flaherty also announced that they will be “transforming ideas from the lab” to the market place. As Stephen Harper has fought to keep selling deadly asbestos to other countries, we can only imagine what will be green …
