Q&A: Abdominal pain, anemia, liver hemangioma, and gallbladder polyp. Should I be worried about cancer?

liver cancer symptoms
by Barry Gourmet and Raw

Question by bobajojo: Abdominal pain, anemia, liver hemangioma, and gallbladder polyp. Should I be worried about cancer?
For the past 7 months, I’ve have all kinds of symptoms. Abdominal pain in all 4 quadrants, anemia- low hematocrit readings (37.6, I’m a male), headaches, numbness… etc. I’ve had an abdominal CT, ultrasound, colonoscopy, CBC’s. Other than the anemia, all my bloodwork has come back normal. But during a recent ultrasound, the technician told me she saw some hemangiomas on my liver and a polyp (1mm) in my gallbladder. She told me not to worry because these are most likely benign. But I’m worried because I have pain and anemia. Could the hemangioma actually be cancer? My weight had remained the same throughout and I haven’t had a fever. Can someone ease my fears?

Can abdominal and liver bloating be caused by a fatty liver?

Question by jayhaav2008: Can abdominal and liver bloating be caused by a fatty liver?
My mother’s stomach/abdomen gets very, very bloated, usually after she eats. She says that flatulence usually makes the swelling go down.

Her liver also used to become enlarged and get swollen as well.

The last time she went to the doctor, I believe she was diagnosed with a fatty liver.

I know that a symptom of liver cancer is a swollen abdomen and a swollen liver, and of course, I’m hoping that she doesn’t have that.

However, her family does have a history of liver disease on it’s side – her mother, my grandmother, died of liver cancer in fact.

So I’m very, very worried.

She hasn’t been diagnosed with liver cancer – only with the fatty liver.

She IS old, she IS obese, and she does have a family history of liver disease.

As of right now, she’s on medication. The medicine has stopped her liver from swelling up and hurting, but her stomach and abdomen still swell up and become very, very tight.

Can a fatty liver cause this? Or is it automatically liver cancer from what I described?

Best answer:

Answer by purple
It sounds like your mom is getting gas from eating food. This is a common problem and the only good treatment is to avoid the offending food. There are gimmicky drugs out on the market (ie: BEANO), but these products do not really work. She would have to be a detective and figure which food is not agreeing with her gut. There are different causes for a fatty liver and a small percentage can progress to liver cancer. However, the symptoms you describe sound like gas. Tell your mom to get a full check-up so you can both get on with your lives…

Thermal Ablation for the Treatment of Abdominal Tumors

To see more of this protocol go to www.jove.com Thermal Ablation for the Treatment of Abdominal Tumors This video protocol was filmed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Percutaneous thermal ablation is an emerging treatment option for many tumors of the abdomen not amenable to conventional treatments. During a thermal ablation procedure, a thin applicator is guided into the target tumor under imaging guidance. Energy is then applied to the tissue until temperatures rise to cytotoxic levels (50-60 °C). Various energy sources are available to heat biological tissues, including radiofrequency (RF) electrical current, microwaves, laser light and ultrasonic waves. Of these, RF and microwave ablation are most commonly used worldwide. During RF ablation, alternating electrical current (~500 kHz) produces resistive heating around the interstitial electrode. Skin surface electrodes (ground pads) are used to complete the electrical circuit. RF ablation has been in use for nearly 20 years, with good results for local tumor control, extended survival and low complication rates1,2. Recent studies suggest RF ablation may be a first-line treatment option for small hepatocellular carcinoma and renal-cell carcinoma3-5. However, RF

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain during pregnancy can also indicate a miscarriage. A miscarriage is usually signaled by bleeding in your vagina, followed by cramping. The cramps can last between several hours and several days.

Tighten the deep abdominal muscle, making it go firm and taut. You should feel a tightening under your fingers, and the abdominal muscle drawing towards your lower spine. It may flatten your lower tummy area.

Often, abdominal wall pain may be the presenting feature in a patient who has had lower back pain and stiffness for some time. He may have gotten used to these lower back symptoms and a careful history for such must be uncovered to get to the root of the abdominal wall symptoms.

Symptoms of mesothelioma does not always appear right away. It can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years after the exposure to surface. Shortness of breath, pain in the chest and coughing due to fluid in the pleural space (in between the two pleural membranes)are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

In all types of malignant mesothelioma, generalized symptoms such as fever, unexplained weight loss and fatigue are usually present. Patients with advanced mesothelioma are usually offered palliative treatment to reduce the discomfort from their symptoms. Pleural or abdominal fluid collections may be drained, and substances that prevent further formation and collection of fluid may be placed in the pleural or abdominal cavities.

Endometriosis is characterized by a presence of endometrial tissue, which is normally located within the uterus, outside this organ. When these tissues grow outside the uterus, they form lumps or masses that resemble endometrium, the thin lining found in the uterus.

The appendectomy is a method of surgery. Generally antibiotics given to prevent or treat infection. A more extensive surgery is applied when a ruptured appendix blows up. People with appendicitis end up with an abdominal abscess or pus pocket. Sometimes bleeding, infection or allergic reaction are due to the anesthesia.

Abdominal pain can be sharp, dull, stabbing, cramplike, knifelike, twisting, or boring. Many other types of pain are possible. The causes of abdominal pain depend on sex and age of the patient. Abdominal pain may be minor and of no great significance, or it can reflect a major problem involving one of the organs in the abdomen. A woman may have a twisted ovarian cyst while a man may have testicular torsion with a twisted testis.

Chances are if you have this kind of pregnancy along with the abdominal cramps you will also be suffering from chills, fever and spotting. In case this condition is diagnosed within a few weeks, it could be dangerous as the fallopian tubes can rupture. Abdominal cramps, pain and tenderness accompanied by lower back pain, dizziness and shoulder pain also point towards an Ectopic pregnancy. You must contact your physician right away if any of these symptoms persist during your early pregnancy.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms may include bowel obstruction; blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.Read about herbal supplements and also read aboutbreast enlargement and breast enhancement

Asbestos, Abdominal Mesothelioma and What are Your legal Options

Asbestos, Abdominal Mesothelioma and What are Your legal Options

Article by Nathalie Fiset

Abdominal mesothelioma, which is also known as peritoneal mesothelioma, is a rather rare type of cancer. Malignant cells are found in the abdominal lining called the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the protective sac that lines several internal organs.

The peritoneum is the specific mesothelioma of the abdomen. It has two types known as parietal and visceral peritoneum. The latter covers the abdominal cavity while the former is found in the intestinal tract’s outer layer and covers the internal organs.

The cells of peritoneum secrete a certain fluid which permits the movement of the organs against one another, often touching the surface of the other tissues. These cells are designed to create the fluid but an abnormal reaction by the uncontrollable cell division of malignant cells builds up unnecessary fluids in the abdominal cavity.

Like other types of mesothelioma cancer, abdominal mesothelioma normally occurs among people aged 50 to 70 years old. Maybe because the latency period of the disease needs some decades from the onset of the disease towards its maturation. Which means that the person having the disease possibly does not know that he is becoming ill already.

Common symptoms of abdominal mesothelioma are the following:

- Loss of appetite and consequent weight loss- Swelling of the abdomen- Abdominal weakness- Abdominal and chest pains, – Shortness of breath and- Nausea

While there may not be sufficient information as to why asbestos causes abdominal mesothelioma, there are still some explanations to make things a bit clearer. It is widely known that peritoneal mesothelium is caused by asbestos by two main reasons. First, asbestos fiber could either be inhaled or ingested. When it is ingested, the fiber will obviously go down to the peritoneal and will remain there until the body dies. Second, it could be inhaled and pass down to the lymph node towards the abdomen.

Peritoneal mesothelioma therefore is caused by asbestos fiber that drifts in the air. This could be gathered in workplaces, industrial sites and even homes. Before it begins destroying your body, there are certain degrees of exposure that must be met. Asbestos diseases such as that of abdominal mesothelioma is dose-responsive, meaning with large doses come greater risk of contracting a disease.

Peritoneal mesothelioma and asbestos patients are not only entitled to medical attention, legal help are also available. Because these are considered as occupational diseases, companies are often liable for the diseases of their workmen. In this case, the victim is entitled to some compensation.

Normally, people who were exposed to asbestos due to work file their lawsuits. While many o not reach full trial, still plenty of mesothelioma cases are fairly compensated through settlement.

All victims of asbestos exposure due to the negligence of the company they have worked for often have good chances of establishing a strong case. However, there are a few things that must be observed.

For example, certain courts protect certain company from individual lawsuits. In this case, the best thing one can do is to file a case as a class where many complainants are involved. This will establish the case so strongly and would normally yield better compensation.

Also, each state has its own regulations when filing and handling claims involving asbestos. There are time limits and this varies depending on the law being observed in a certain state. Meaning, the best course of action after the diagnosis of the disease, more specifically peritoneal mesothelium, is to seek legal advice right ahead and file the case according to the victim’s personal interests and the advices of the attorney or law firm. As we have said partially a while back, some asbestos lawsuits do not reach trail, most of them end up on settlement.

So even if you want to extend your case for a full trial, there could be some variations along the way. For one, settlement could give a fair compensation but of course not as high as with a full trial, which of course is not always guaranteed. Second, settlement is very convenient for both parties since full trial is a very long process and could be very exhausting. If the trial is cut short, both parties do not have to waste time going mulling over the taxing details of a full trial. But the great disadvantage with settlement is that some people feel that the justice wasn’t met for the victim. Well, this view will largely depend on the parties involved. It is best to discuss this issue with your asbestos attorney.

If you think you got your disease from working for a company which made use of asbestos materials without practicing protective measures, it is wise that you seek legal counsel and do the best things you can do.

Asbestos Induced Abdominal Cancer

Asbestos Induced Abdominal Cancer

Article by Nathalie Fiset

Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is the official term used by doctors for a rare but dangerous type of cancer that is generally caused by the ihalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a fibrous fire retardant material that is heavily used in most industries, and as such people who work in these environments are at the highest level of risk.

Because of the fibrous nature of asbestos, it’s small fibers can be inhaled easily by people, and it can also cling to the skin and clothes, so people who don’t work directly exposed to asbestos can still contract Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma. People who live with those who have been around asbestos are equally at risk and can still contract this cancer.

The most common cause of mesothelioma is inhalation or ingesting the particles or asbestos, which leads to the development of malignant cells in the lining which covers most of the body’s internal organs. These malignant cells are what cause the cancer. Thankfully, it is not a contagious disease and is relatively rare, with only around three thousand cases being diagnosed annually worldwide.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms do not manifest until around twenty to fifty years after asbestos fibers have entered the body, so often the people who are diagnosed are in their middle to late years in life. One of the ways to detect Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is by sudden and rapid loss of weight, and swelling in the stomach area accompanied by sharp pains due to pressure from an increase in body fluids in the abdominal lining.

Another set of symptoms are difficulty in bowel movement, blood clotting, and fevers similar to intestinal flu. The problem with the symptoms of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is that they are often misdiagnosed because they can easily be taken as symptoms of some other, less dangerous illnesses.

Effects

The effects of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma can be ultimately fatal if left unchecked. One of the more dangerous effects is the development of tumors in the stomach lining due to fluid buildup and the presence of the malignant cells in the body. The tumors cause blood clotting, as mentioned, and can spread from the abdominal area upwards to the chest cavity, affecting both the heart and lungs.

A few of the more severe effect of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma include bleeding in the internal organs once the malignant cells grow to a sufficient level. Left unchecked, this internal bleeding is fatal. Pulmonary Emboli is another effect of this sickness, which is the formation of clots of dried or coagulated blood in the lungs. Again, this is ultimately fatal if left unchecked.

Treatment

Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is treated in a variety of fashions, and while it is generally approached like any other cancer, some of the methods commonly used to treat the more common forms of cancer don’t prove as effective. For one thing, surgery to remove the malignant cells have shown a very low survivability rate among the patients, with an average life expectancy of only 5 years post operation.

The most successful treatments of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma have stemmed from general chemotherapy as well a a fairly new method known as heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This method combines chemotherapy with a heat surgery treatment that removes the malignant cells without causing any damage to the healthy surrounding tissue. The application of heat to the malignant cells also allows a more efficient introduction to the body of the medical agents used in the chemotherapy.

Avoidance/Safety Tips

On a personal level, one of the most obvious ways to avoid exposure to this cancer would be to stay away from places which have high concentrations of asbestos. There are many different forms of asbestos now being developed, and the ones which have been noted as causing Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma were versions primarily developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Modern fire retardant materials are much safer and have been mandated in some parts of the world to replace asbestos entirely.

Since asbestos fibers normally have to be ingested or inhaled to cause mesothelioma then using a face mask and avoiding eating around asbestos is a good safety practice. However, since the fibers are invisible to the naked eye and can actually be carried on skin and clothing, another safety tip is to wear a completely different set of clothing when working around asbestos, and to both remove the clothing and bathe completely after exposure. This minimizes the risk that any fibers will be taken home to one’s families after work and consequently avoid abdominal mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure.

Ovarian Cancer Abdominal Pain 3 Months After Surgery…?

overview of cancer
by jurvetson

Question by .: Ovarian Cancer Abdominal Pain 3 Months After Surgery…?
…any ideas why my mom would still have bad abdominal pain 3 months after having surgery for ovarian cancer (stage 3). Brief overview is she had a total hysderectomy, part of her intestines removed, lymph nodes, partical colon removed, etc. The pain is always in the same area. She does have a partial bowel blockage, but is this all cancer related (or did they leave something in!) and if so will the chemo help her with the pain later? She just had her second chemo treatment a few days ago (carboplatnim). Thanks!

I’m not much help, but I had a total hysterectomy in July (not cancer), and I’m still having pain alot like before surgery. My doctor said it was from moving my insides around like he did and that it should get a little better each month.. Your mother’s doctor needs to know of this though, as everyone is different.
