My fiance has been diagnosed with germ cell tumor that started in his chest. The tumor was the size of a grapefruit that had collapsed his left lung and started to block off his airway. He has been in the hospital 3 weeks and was in ICU for 2 weeks. They said that they did not believe he had the Klienfeld syndrome because he did not have any of the characteristics of it. I was wondering what may have caused this, if anything makes it more prone to have it, what are the survival rates for this and does anyone know where a community board is for care givers to deal with germ cell tumor cancer? The doctors does not really tell us anything, they say “he is really sick” I know it has spread to his lymph nodes. They have him on chemo already. He has been on a ventilator to help him breathe. Is there a survival rating? I don’t know what questions to ask the doctors and they don’t really want to tell you anything unless you ask them straight up. If he survives, will the chemo or the cancer affect his fertility? He doesn’t have insurance either so we are in the process of trying to get him on SSI or medicaid. We were going to get married this summer, so another ? would be if we eloped would my income (around 20k annually) affect him getting SSI? He has no income now and just got out of college so didn’t have a job either.
Sorry I did miss spell that, the doctors here said they did not believe he had Klinefelter’s syndrome, 47, XXY or XXY syndrome because he did not have any characteristics of it. They have not tested him for it because he didn’t look like he had it. He is at a hosptial that is with a college of medicine so he has lots of interns coming in and studying him. They said it is a rare cancer.

This is a real nightmare situation. I saw this once in my twenty years as a cancer specialist doctor. These do respond to chemotherapy. No one knows what causes these. A cure with this volume of disease is difficult but not impossible. The expense will be impossible for anyone but a Kennedy in this day in the U.S. His fertility will likely be affected by the chemotherapy – depending on which drugs they use. The medical oncologist should be explaining all of this in detail. That is part of the job. Much of my time as a medical oncologist was spent providing explanations for patients and their family members. This is a true battle. Fast growing malignancies like this can be fast shrinking tumors with treatment, but they can come back quickly also.

Hope you can get Medicaid. No one I have ever known could afford the bills you will see for this type of care in the U.S. with no insurance coverage. Perfect example of what’s wrong with our health care reimbursement system in the USA.
The young man I cared for in this situation did gain a good response to chemotherapy. He had a complete remission – meaning we could not see any more cancer on CT scans. But the cancer came back and ended his life.

Dreams about passed grandfather?

My step-grandpa, 68, passed away from a courageous battle with lung cancer in November, very suddenly (after having the doctor said he will have a few months, he was gone the next day) and I didn’t get to say goodbye. I’ve been having a really hard time with it. I have had three dreams about him, and in every one, at the end of the dream, he fades away, and I am never able to talk directly to him. In my dream last night, he had black hair (I have only ever seen him with grey hair, and only have seen pictures of him with grey hair). He, my grandma, and I were at the animal exhibit at the fair, and I think in the dream I either knew he had passed, or knew that he was soon going to die. Just before leaving the fair. He appologized to me and my grandma, and said sorry, but he had to go away. So again, he walked into the distance (while looking at me) and just faded away. I was yelling for him to come back, and he just stared (that happened in the other dreams as well.) Except this time, at the fair ground, the song “Happy Trails” (happy trails to you, until we meet again) came on the speaker system. He had black hair, and my mom told me that she heard me yelling in my room in the middle of the night (when I woke up). I was wondering why he had black hair, so I called my grandma and asked what color his hair was when he was younger. Sure enough, it was black. I am just wondering what your thoughs are about this… maybe he came to visit me from heaven, and is younger up there?

I think that’s probably exactly what happened. Sometimes, when people we loved who have passed try to contact us, we can only come together in our dreams, or when we aren’t going at the break-neck speeds of like that we normally go at. I’d say that your grandpa was trying to let you know that things were okay and he would be happy in heaven, and that you should be happy as well (not just by apologizing, but adding the song as well). Sometimes we connect with loved ones in dreams, or we can feel them at certain times through our life.
I’m so glad you were able to have a special moment with him. That’s important. I would write down the dream in detail, just so you have it to keep with you always.

Recreational Drugs
Some people take recreational drugs; it seems like a fact of life. Their use has been around since the dawn of man. They were historically taken in a religious setting but now are used for enjoyment, medication, and inspiration. Obviously not using drugs is the healthiest option but I doubt humanity will ever fully discontinue using recreational drugs. Since their use is so common and widespread I thought I might write out some facts about the most popular ones so if you do decide to use any of them you know the effects, risks, etc and can make a more informed decision.
Caffeine- Caffeine is a stimulant that effects the cardiovascular and nervous system. It is legal and easy to obtain. It causes increased heart rate, blood flow, metabolic rate, and respiratory rate. It increases alertness, elevates mood, and decreases fatigue. With frequent use the user runs the risk of becoming chemically dependent to caffeine. Withdrawals from caffeine can cause difficulty concentrating, nausea, anxiety, and insomnia. It is possible in extreme amounts to overdose on caffeine and permanently damage the cardiovascular system and possibly result in death.
Tobacco (Nicotine)- Nicotine is a stimulant that effects the cardiovascular and nervous system. It is legal and easy to obtain. Using nicotine causes increased alertness followed by a sense of relaxation; it also reduces appetite. With frequent use the user runs the risk of becoming chemically dependent on nicotine. Nicotine withdrawals can range from insomnia, weight gain, constipation, anxiety, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. In extreme dosages nicotine use can result in overdose (usually with patches). Using tobacco products has been shown to cause various kinds of cancer depending on the method of use. Mouth, lung, throat, bladder, larynx, kidney, stomach, etc.
Alcohol (Ethanol)-Ethanol is the depressant found in alcohol, it effects the nervous system and thins the blood. It is legal and easy to obtain. Using ethanol causes euphoria, reduction of inhibitions, and gradual decrease of motor skills depending on dosage and tolerance. Frequent ethanol use can result in chemical dependence and in higher dosage overdose. Ethanol withdrawals can be very severe and range from depression, nausea, headaches, shakes, and cold sweat. If you are chemically dependent on ethanol you should consult a doctor, as Detox can be fatal if not done properly. Ethanol has also been shown to cause various cancers such as, mouth, throat, liver, larynx, etc. It also has been shown to cause serosis and damage various organs in your body (esp. liver)
Strong Psychedelic Drugs (LSD, Psyliocybin, Peyote, Salvia Dinorum)- They are hallucinogenic drugs that effect your nervous system and chemicals in the brain. Using these drugs cause changes in mood, distortion of reality, dissociation, synathesisa, and hallucinations with all senses. You cannot become chemically dependent to any of these drugs but you can become psychologically dependent to them. This means that you feel a psychological need to use the drug but you will not suffer any chemical withdrawals if you discontinue use. These drugs effect how you think and perceive the world in a very powerful way. The quality of your experience depends on your mood before use, the location you take them in, and the people you are around. Based on these conditions you may have a positive, life changing experience or a negative, horrifying experience. Because of this risk it is recommended you have an experienced sitter who is there to watch over you and console you. The sitter is also there to make sure you don’t do anything dangerous or stupid while you are hallucinating. If you have previous mental issues these drugs may make them worse. They effect how you think and may cause you to bring up old issues and cause mental distress or even a mental breakdown.
Hard illegal Drugs (Meth, Cocaine)- These drugs are considered hard because like alcohol they have a high rate of chemical dependency and severe withdrawal symptoms. They are also highly illegal. When used they cause euphoria, altered mood, increased alertness, insomnia. They have a high risk of chemical dependence and their withdrawal can be fatal. They are similar to other stimulant withdrawals but more severe. If you have a chemical dependency to these drugs then you should consult a doctor since the withdrawal can result in death.
Smart drugs, Pharms (Rx drugs)- Prescription drugs are relatively easy to get and are legally distributed by the medical companies. Their use causes a wide range of symptoms including, altered mood, relaxation, increased alertness, sedation, reduced inhibition, among others. Rx drugs use in higher frequency can result in chemical dependence and in higher dosage can result in overdose. Rx withdrawals can be very severe and you should consult a doctor when discontinuing their use because the withdrawals can be fatal. T

Cannabis (THC)-THC is a mild psychoactive drug that effects the nervous system found in the buds of the cannabis plant. It is illegal but fairly easy to obtain. Its effects are highly varied depending on (location, mood, etc see strong psychoactive drugs) however the most common are, increased sensory experience, altered sense of time, increased appetite, change in thought process, euphoria, relaxation. The over load of sensory experience can cause short-term memory loss for the duration of the high. You cannot become chemically dependent on THC but you can become psychologically addicted (psychological need to use, no withdrawals when use stops). There has never been an overdose of THC and many believe that although it is theoretically possible in use it is impossible to use that much THC. If you use THC by smoking the buds of the plant the smoke from the burnt plant matter can irritate the lungs. Other methods of THC use such as inhaling THC vapor or digesting activated THC

It isn’t the most common cancer and it actually has one of the better survival rates. Why don’t we look at pancreatic cancer which has a 5 year survival rate of less than 5%?
It’s not like I’m pro-breast cancer, I just want to know why colon cancer or prostate cancer don’t get the same media treatment. Everyone has seen the pink ribbons but what about the other forms of cancer?

Sometimes, you can’t just be happy with who you are. You feel depressed but you want to keep your feelings all in. Having low self-esteem, depression, or stress can lead to an eating disorder. An eating disorder is an illness that causes a person to develop unhealthy eating habits. The three types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Having an eating disorder can affect your relationship with other, cause you to think many negative thoughts about yourself and your body, and damage your health. If you suspect that someone has an eating disorder, it is important that you show support for that person so they can have a healthy attitude and body. As you grow older, you begin to feel more conscious of your body. You go through physical changes, as well as “social pressures.” One or two out of one hundred kids, particularly girls, that struggle with this disorder can successfully hide their extreme weight loss from their parents for months or years. Anorexia can come from psychological, genetic, social, and family factors. Many girls are exposed to images of thin models that have the “ideal” body size. Participating in activities such as gymnastics,where thinness is emphasized can also lead to anorexia. Since parents are role models fortheir children, a parent’s body image, their lifestyle, and their dieting Once someone is obsessed with dieting,exercise, and taking laxatives, they will still see themselves as overweight even if they can see their bones.
Anorexics usually portion their food carefully or come up with excuses to skip their meals. Without receiving the nutrients the body needs to keep your bones strong, and help the body maintain homeostasis, the lack of nutrients will affect the body in many ways:

If you suspect that your child or someone you know is anorexic, it is important to give as much support to them as you can, and try to help them admit that they have an eating disorder. Some people may feel depression, anger, or denial when faced to admit that they are anorexic. Try to show your concern and approach the person in a loving and supportive way. Use “I” instead of “you.” If the person is still in denial, try to be patient, saying that you’ll be there whenever they are ready to talk about it. Get help from a doctor, nutritionist, and a therapist. Encourage a healthy outlook on nutrition, exercise, and their appearance to help them raise their self esteem. For parents, it’s critical to make exercise a regular family activity and have their child help prepare nutritional meals for the whole family.
Bulimia is another type of eating diorder that involves dieting. A person with bulimia is tempted to eat “comfort foods”, such as ice cream or cake. After their out-of-control eating, the person will feel ashamed and guilty for what they have done. They will try inappropriate methods of weight control, such as vomiting and fasting. Bulimics will show excessive shape and weight concern, yet still consume quantities of food up to 20,000 calories a day. This all begins with dissatisfaction of the bodt.

just a few tips…
try not to use contractions
when you say “anorexics” you are isolating them from the everyone else it would be better to say people with anorexia or something like that

try to read through it yourself and see if there are any other places where comas can be taken out. otherwise it looked superb

my husband had pneumonia in june – the dr found a mass in the upper right lung lobe – after 3 ct scans, bronicascope, needle biopsy and pet scan they still don’t have any sure cancer diagnosis – the lung dr sent us to surgeon – they said all test show abnormal cells – my husband is a smoker, has been on inhalers of albuterol for over 40 years – apetite good, all vitals good, what should we do about an open biopsy and or surgery to remove mass?

There is no right or wrong decision in this situation – you will only know the best answer after either procedures is done. It would be best to talk to the surgeon about the difference in the risks from an open biopsy and removing the mass. Removal risks depend on the size and location of the mass. If the risks of the biopsy and removal are in the same ballpark, then it makes sense to remove the mass. If removal is a high risk surgery, then, it might be better to have the biopsy and then make a decision about removal.

they only test for food if they think u need it,skin rashes and breathing problems are usually symptoms

I have a rare disease called coccidiomycosis. It’s a fungal infection that spores in the soil of southwestern US and central America. The reason I would like to educate people about it is because it is very sneaky, often misdiagnosed as lung cancer or TB in early stages, but equally as fatal in most cases. Good idea???

A friend has been diagnosed with Stage 2 A breast cancer. Using the TNM system, it is classified as T1 N1 M0. She had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago along with axillary lymph node dissection. The tumor was almost 2cm and there were 3 nodes that tested positive. The doctor is recommending chemo therapy and then radiate to follow that. Has anyone had cancer around this stage that can tell me about their treatment? How bad was the chemo? How long was the chemo? Etc.. Any and all answers appreciated.
So, if someone gets chemo every 3 weeks, they might get it multiple times within that week? Is this intravenous chemo? I’ve read up on something called dense-dose chemo therapy, where you get that every 2 weeks.. I’m really curious.
Also, what is the survival rate for this type of cancer? I know this is all vague details, since every cancer is so different, but I’ve known alot of people that have not survived cancer.. Is this something most people can survive?

I had breast cancer I just completed my treatment about a month and a half ago, I had a mastsctomy done and they also removed three lymph nodes also tested positive. My chemo treatment was six sessions three days out of the week but every 3 weeks followed by 36 session of radiation. Many people say that chemo is a very bad that you lose wait that you throw up all day that you cant eat, Icant tell you that all that is not true but what i will tell you is that i never went through none of that the only thing that i experienced was the last day of each session i had no flavor in my mouth felt tired but just for one day.I believe the reason is that i never seen chemo with fright i went in there letting the cancer cell that i was there to kill them as dumb as it sounds i would literaly talk to them and tell them YOU DONT BELONG IN MY BODY!! yea I know its dumb but hey it worked for me. I believe in the power of the mind if you believe that chemo will get you sick trust me IT WILL. The radiation you really dont feel anything you just lay there. After about 5 weeks the skin will get dark look at it as a very long day at the beach i do recommend to use alot i mean alot of aloe lotion at least 5 times a day they say three is enough but a little extra wont hurt. Other than that its nothing big. As for me the hardest part from chemo was the hair part but like me always making good out of something bad didnt think much of it. Use this time to play with different looks its fun. Hope I helped a little good luck to your friend everything will be fine. Remember that saying what doesnt kill you makes you stronger.

I have been having lung pain and pain in my right kindney area for about 2 weeks now , the lung pain is in ,my left lung , in the front just below my nipple area , and in the side down my ribs and in the back just below my shoudler blade , it doesn’t hurt when i cough or to the touch , and i am a smoker , i have been coughing up a little mucus , no blood , but what scares me is the kidney pain too , when that hurts i can barely walk , does anybody have any answers , i just had a xray about 6 weeks ago for the flu i had , could it be cancer or what ?

If you had xray 6 weeks ago you would have known by now if you had cancer. What you are describing and being a smoker is COPD. It is a lung condition. I have it and the symtoms sound the same. COPD is coronary obstructive pulmonary disease which the start of emphysema. Have your doctor check it. Good Luck.

my dad is 53 and has a lump in his neck.he has had it about 2 months and has been urgently refered to a ENT specialist.he saw the specialist yesterday and had the lump examined.they performed an endoscopy and a fine needle aspiration and sent it away for tests.the results will be back in 10 long days.i’m so scared and expecting the worst.there is a lot of family history on my dad’s side regarding cancer.his dad died of lung cancer,mum skin cancer,brother leukemia,brother bowel cancer,sister ovarian cancer.yes my dad is a smoker.whats the probability my dad has cancer?

I feel so sad today! Just a few minutes ago. my husband said that the doctor wants him to see a Lung Specialist because of a mass in his lung. Just one of his lungs has it. It is located in the lower part of his lung. All of the doctors have been saying that he has a lung abcess. But this doctor says it is a small chance it could be cancer. Please if anyone out there knows about these things please help me!
The doctor also said that it could be the abcess is filled with puss/or it could have dead cells in it.
I do not want to lose my husband or my child’s dad!

I understand why you are scared, but there are a bunch of things it could be besides cancer. When you breathe i things the lung can’t handle it tends to wall it off and form a mass around it. It can be caused by parasites, asbestos granules etc. So, try to stay calm and hopeful so you can support your husband through this.

My birthday is on June 26, about 7 days away from a gemini, so i was wondering could I be a cancer-gemini? I am sensitive, sentimental, nurtering, loving, and cuddly. BUT I have another personality that is wild just like a gemini. Trates like being wild, wanting to go everywhere all the time, and things like that.
I just met a gemini and already fell in love with him pretty much the first 5 minutes, but the sites are saying when there is romance between a cancer and gemini, the gemini will tend to fool the cancer into thinking they’re a real charmer.
But maybe if I have gemini tendencies it would work?
