I have just been diagnosed as having lung cancer my husband & adult son are driving me insane?

diagnosis of lung cancer
by JD | Photography

Question by : I have just been diagnosed as having lung cancer my husband & adult son are driving me insane?
as they insist on doing everything for me I was fully independent before my diagnosis I love them both & I know it`s their way of showing that they care about my well-being, how do I tell them without hurting their feelings that I find their attitude stifling.
I would like to thank everyone for their input & no I have not started any sort of treatment I see the oncologist next week

Answer by R
Tell them so while making sure they realize how appreciative you are of your help. Tell them when you need their help, you’ll ask for it, but you don’t want to be treated like an invalid while you’re fully capable of doing things yourself. Doing everything for you is a sure way to make you feel more sick.

I know that I would probably react the same way if my mother was diagnosed with such a disease, and if she told me to take it easy I might at first me a little stung just because my reaction would me “I was trying to help”
However, I would also be glad to know she was feeling well enough to continue being independent. So don’t worry about that initial making them feel a little bad.

This woman’s husband is the main breadwinner for this family of 3 and also his elderly parents. The woman has Stage IV sarcoma which has spead to her lung. She is unable to move without a great deal of pain. She is only 30 yr old. She fears once they begin to radiate her lungs, she will need help with child care and self care. Does anyone have any suggestions, real suggestions? Most of the time when you go to various agencies, there seems to be one reason or another why a person is not qualified to get help. The income that her husband makes puts them in a catagory where she is not poor enough to receive funds and they are not rich enough to pay for assistance. So anyone, please help……

Adult Brain Tumor Risks, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Article by Sanjeev

A brain tumor is a mass or growth of abnormal cells that have multiplied out of control. There are many different types of brain tumors. Some are benign, or non-cancerous, while others are classified as malignant, or cancerous. Symptoms you experience and treatment options depend largely on the type of tumor as well as its size and location.

Primary brain tumors are those that originate in the brain or tissues surrounding it. These tumors are much less common than secondary tumors, which occur when cancer from another part of the body metastasizes or spreads to the brain. While any type of cancer may do this, melanoma and cancers of the breast, colon, kidney, and lung are the most common to metastasize to the brain.

Researchers have not been able to determine exactly what causes brain tumors to form. Only a few risk factors have been documented. Exposure to radiation therapy of the head may put you at a higher risk for developing brain tumors. Certain genetic syndromes may increase your risk as well. Typically, there is not a clear indication of what caused the tumor to form. Research continues to determine if cell phones may contribute to the formation of brain tumors. At this time, no clear conclusions have been made linking the two.

There are no reliable screenings that detect brain tumors before symptoms appear. Patients may suffer from a variety of symptoms before visiting their physician for diagnosis. The size, location, and rate of growth of the tumor often determine what symptoms occur. Some of the most common symptoms may include:

Headaches that occur more often and become more severe over time Blurred or double vision Hearing loss Unexplained nausea and vomiting Changes in personality Confusion Seizures Weakness or loss of movement in an arm or leg

If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your physician for a diagnosis. He or she will recommend a variety of tests to determine whether or not a brain tumor is the problem. Checking your vision, hearing, coordination, and reflexes with a neurological exam may indicate which part of brain is affected. An MRI allows the physician to scan your brain and evaluate the situation. A CT scan may be administered to determine if there is cancer in another part of your body that may have spread. If a tumor is found, the patient may undergo a biopsy to diagnose the tumor as benign or malignant.

Benign tumors are less aggressive than malignant ones and do not normally spread to surrounding tissue or other parts of the body. Even though they are not cancerous, benign tumors can still be very serious and possibly life threatening. If they are located in a vital area of the brain, exert pressure on sensitive nerve tissue, or increase pressure in the brain, these tumors may pose a serious risk to the patient. Benign tumors are often successfully treated with surgery, reducing the patient’s risk of disability or death.

There are three standard types of treatment for malignant tumors: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. New treatments are constantly being researched and used in clinical trials throughout the world. For some patients, clinical trials are the best choice of treatment. Your cancer care team will make recommendations for the treatment options that best suit your particular situation.

It is important that those patients who are dealing with a brain tumor not only get the best treatment available, but also find support to cope with their diagnosis. Talk with your physician or oncologist about support options in your area.

Marriage produces financial inequality.Take into consideration these figures:In the initially year soon after a divorce, the woman’s normal of living generally drops by twenty five percent, though the husband’s boosts.Another reality: the larger the cash flow of the relatives, the wider the gap among partners. The good reason? Most couples nevertheless make investments in the husband’s occupation when the wife’s work normally requires second position. Even even though society is altering, this pattern even now retains for most couples. And if the marriage lasted a extended time, the spouse has misplaced at minimum a 10 years of profession expansion. The courts normally dismiss this very important concern when dividing marital property. Ordinarily, divorce settlements divide only the tangible marital assets – the household, the vehicle, the furnishings. For most divorcing partners, this marital estate is not very massive, averaging much less than $ twenty,000.Job AssetsOn the other hand, quite a few courts customarily overlook one particular key asset of a marriage – the husband’s career and profession assets. These consist of his:

But the courts base these settlements on the assumption – typically fake – that equally spouses can be equally self-ample. ” Elecampagne Root ”

—Medicinal Action and Uses—Diuretic, tonic, diaphoretic, expectorant, alterative, antiseptic, astringent and gently stimulant. It was employed by the ancients in certain diseases of women, also in phthisis, in dropsy and in skin affections. Its name ‘Scabwort’ arose from the fact that a decoction of it is said to cure sheep affected with the scab, and the name ‘Horse-heal’ was given it from its reputed virtues in curing the cutaneous diseases of horses.

In herbal medicine it is chiefly used for coughs, consumption and other pulmonary complaints, being a favourite domestic remedy for bronchitis. It has been employed for many years with good results in chest affections, for which it is a valuable medicine as it is in all chronic diseases of the lungs asthma and bronchitis. It gives relief to the respiratory difficulties and assists expectoration. Its principal employment as a separate remedy is in acute catarrhal affections, and in dyspepsia attended with relaxation and debility, given in small, warm and frequently repeated doses. It is, however, seldom given alone, but most frequently preferred in combination with other medicines of a similar nature. It is best given in the form of decoction, the dose being a small teaspoonful, three times a day.

The root used not only to be candied and eaten as a sweetmeat, but lozenges were made of it. It has been employed in whooping-cough. It is sometimes employed in the form of a confection for piles, 1 OZ. of powdered root being mixed with 2 OZ. of honey.

In the United States, it has also been highly recommended, both for external use and internal administration in diseases of the skin, an old use of the root that has maintained its reputation for efficacy.

Externally applied, it is somewhat rubefacient, and has been employed as an embrocation in the treatment of sciatica, facial and other neuralgia.

Of late years, modern scientific research has proved that the claims of Elecampane to be a valuable remedy in pulmonary diseases has a solid basis. One authority, Korab, showed in 1885 that the active, bitter principle, Helenin, is such a powerful antiseptic and bactericide, that a few drops of a solution of 1 part in 10,000 immediately kills the ordinary bacterial organisms, being peculiarly destructive to the Tubercle bacillus. He gave it successfully in tubercular and catarrhal diarrhoeas, and praised it also as an antiseptic in surgery. In Spain it has been made use of as a surgical dressing. Obiol, in 1886, stated it to be an efficient local remedy in the treatment of diphtheria, the false membrane being painted with a solution of Helenin in Oil of Almond.

Adult Asthma Treatment

Adult Asthma Treatment

Article by Latifah Alma

Asthma has been on the rise in the U.S. over the past 50 years and is now most common chronic condition in America, affecting 20 million of us. Asthma occurs when triggers in the environment cause the airways or bronchi in the lung to contract, causing breathing difficulty that, as illustrated by the case above, can be fatal. There are a variety of possibilities for the increase of asthma over the past few decades. It could be because we have less exposure to infection than our ancestors did, which has made our immune systems more sensitive. We spend more time indoors, in controlled environments, where we are exposed to dust and mold. The air we breathe, both inside and outside, is more polluted than the air most of our ancestors breathed. We are more sedentary, and in particular as we moved from a rural to urban lifestyle over the past century we lost the habit of daily exercise, primarily in the form of walking and working outdoors on a daily basis.

There is considerable evidence that a lack of outdoor exercise contributes to asthma, and that an exercise program helps asthmatics. Our sedentary lifestyle has also led to a surge in obesity; there is evidence for an association between obesity and asthma related to the fact that obese people have a smaller area for the lungs to expand, higher levels of the hormone leptin (which is released from fat and is also higher in asthmatics), and higher levels of inflammatory markers (which may contribute to airway reactivity). In fact, as many as 75% of emergency room asthma admissions are for obese people. Finally, there has been a major change in our diet, including a massive increase in exposure to vitamins and minerals through fortified foods, as well as a shift from grain to corn-based nutrition. There is some evidence that changes in diet in our culture may have contributed to the increase in asthma.

There are two categories of asthma: allergic, also known as extrinsic asthma, and non-allergic, or intrinsic asthma. Allergic asthma, the most common form, affecting 20 million individuals in the US, is triggered by an allergic reaction to something you have inhaled, such as dust mite allergen, pet dander, tree or plant pollen, mold, or air pollution. Individuals with allergic asthma have high blood levels of something called immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE sitting on the surface of the airways binds allergens and causes mast cells and basophils to release inflammatory factors, which cause the airways to constrict (IgE in the nose and mouth causes hay fever, and IgE on the skin causes eczema). Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or rapid breathing, and chest tightness. Non-Allergic asthma is triggered by factors not related to allergens.

Non-allergic asthma is triggered by other factors such as upper respiratory infections, anxiety, stress, exercise, cold or dry air, hyperventilation, smoke, viruses, exercise, medications, beta blockers, and ACE inhibitors, sulfites found in red wine, and gastro esophageal reflux disease. Like allergic asthma, non-allergic asthma is characterized by airway obstruction and inflammation that can also be treated and partially reversible with medications similar to those used for allergic asthma. Many of the symptoms of non-allergic asthma are the same as those experienced by allergic asthma sufferers. Although blood levels of IgE are normal in non-allergic asthma, a similar type of inflammatory response takes place in the airways, for reasons that are not fully understood.

Can Adult Stem Cells Improve Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Article by Rita Alexander

For those suffering from the devastating effects of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), the symptoms cause a great deal of pain and suffering. But despite the research that comes out on the disease, there still seems to be a cloud of mystery surrounding its origins.

There is no known cure to date for IPF. However, breakthrough procedures with stem cells have been showing promising signs for those patients afflicted with the disease. The Adult Adipose-derived Stem Cell Procedure program was launched last year by the International Stem Cell Institute (ISCI). Based out of San Diego, California, the institute is a global advocate of stem cell research and procedures.

ISCI uses a proprietary Autologous Adult Adipose-derived Stem Cell process developed over the last six years by AdiStem Ltd., a world leader in biotechnology. During the procedure, adipose tissue (fat) is removed from the patient using mini-liposuction, and processed with a combination of PRP (platelet rich plasma) which includes growth factors that have a powerful impact on cell development, growth and proliferation. A specialized low laser light is used to activate the stem cells, and is then administered via an IV infusion over a 1-2 hour period of time. The IV infusion is an easy out-patient procedure and a method that may give IFP patients options that have not been offered by traditional medicine.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is classified as an interstitial lung disease. According to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, there are approximately 128,000 afflicted with IPF, and more than 40,000 people die from the disease every year. Most patients are diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 70. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, and a decreased tolerance for activity.

Believed to be an inflammatory response to an unknown substance, IPF is a progressive disease that develops over time. The early stages of the disease are characterized by alveolitis, an inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs. Over time, the air sacs become scarred and damaged, and thickening of the lungs occurs. The lungs are unable to transfer oxygen throughout the body. As a result, the brain and other major organs in the body do not receive the required oxygen needed to function.

While the cause of IPF may still be a mystery for researchers, alternative options such as stem cell procedures may provide a viable option for patients afflicted with the disease.

Dealing With Adult Asthma

Dealing With Adult Asthma

Article by Avaraham Henoch

Asthma is a disease that involves recurring (chronic) episodes of inflammation and variable narrowing of the airways. It affects 14-15 million people nationwide. Asthma “attacks” can be mild, moderate, or severe and usually occur when smooth muscles found in the airways of the lungs are stimulated to contract by inflammation.

The cardinal symptoms can be wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and cough, particularly at night and in the early morning.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, whose symptoms may disappear when they reach adulthood. When someone develops asthma for the first time as an adult, it may be a continuing problem for the rest of their life.

What happens when you have an asthma attack? The airways in the lungs of people with asthma are always somewhat swollen or “inflamed”, even when the person is not having any “asthmatic” symptoms. When exposed to substances that are irritating or that the person is allergic to, the airways can become even more narrow than usual. They begin to produce extra mucus, and the tiny muscles in their walls begin to tighten or “contract.” This makes the airways even smaller, and it becomes harder to breathe in and out.

What causes an asthma attack? In people who have a sensitivity to them, cold air, viruses, and tobacco smoke may bring on an asthma attack. An allergic reaction to dust, pollen, molds, and animal dander may trigger an attack as well. Some people experience coughing or wheezing only when they exercise. This is called exercise-included asthma.

The symptoms of asthma When someone is having an asthma attack, they may experience: wheezing (the sound of air moving through the narrowed airways); coughing; shortness of breath (difficult breathing); and tightness in the chest.

How to find out if you have asthma If asthma is suspected, your doctor will ask you about your history of breathing problems and will do a physical exam. This will probably include one or more breathing tests. You may be tested before and after taking medication, so the doctor can measure how well your body may respond to treatment.

Keep in mind that one attack of wheezing does not necessarily mean that you have asthma. Wheezing can also be brought on by certain infections and by exposure to some chemicals. Before deciding that you have asthma, your doctor may want to wait and see if you have another attack of wheezing first.

How asthma is classified Asthma is classified as mild, moderate, or severe, based on lung function and other factors. In mild asthma, lung function is 80% of normal or better. In moderate asthma, lung function is between 60% and 80% of normal, and in severe asthma, it’s 60% or less.

Asthma is also classified by the frequency of symptoms. When asthma involves two or less episodes per week, it is called “intermittent.” If asthma episodes occur more than twice a week, the illness is called “persistent.”

How asthma is treated There are two main types of asthma drug therapy, “quick relief” medications and “long term control” medications. Your doctor will prescribe the ones that are best for you and your type of asthma, taking into consideration how severe and how frequent your breathing difficulty, and other symptoms, are.

For mild intermittent asthma, where asthma attacks occur no more often than two times per week, your doctor may prescribe a “bronchodilator.” This is a quick relief medication that relaxes the muscles in the airways, making them larger and allowing more room for air to move in and out. Bronchodilators usually come in a device-”inhalers”-and are inhaled into your lungs as you spray or activate them into your mouth from receptacle. These can work quickly to relieve an asthma attack. It is vitally important for every person who has asthma to have this type of medication available. Talk to your doctor about which one is right for you.

For persistent asthma, your doctor may prescribe a long-term “anti-inflammatory” controller medication to be taken every day. These are available as inhalers and in other forms. They help reduce the swelling in your airways, but do not stop attacks of wheezing once they start. For wheezing, an appropriate inhaled bronchodilator should be used.

Because your breathing ability can change from day to day due to illness or allergies, your doctor may also prescribe a “peak flow meter.” This is a device you can use at home to check your breathing ability. It can alert you to when you might need your doctor to increase your medication.

Tips for keeping your asthma under control If you suffer from asthma, chances are you will experience asthma attacks from time to time, especially if you are allergic to dust, pollen, mold or animal dander. But you can help to limit their number and severity by:

● Covering mattresses, box springs, and pillows with zippered plastic covers ● Washing bedding in hot water once a week ● Washing and drying pillows thoroughly once a month ● Making sure vaporizers and humidifiers are thoroughly cleaned before you use them ● Bathing pets weekly, vacuuming often, and using a powerful air filter ● Staying indoors when the pollen count is high ● Using air conditioners to cool your home instead of keeping windows open ● Avoiding attic fans, cigarette smoke, and vapors from harsh chemicals, such as bleach ● Taking your medicines exactly as your doctor prescribes them ● Having a “flu” shot every October
