Advances in Cancer Prevention: President Bush Participates in a Roundtable (2007)

thefilmarchive.org January 17, 2007 Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease the risk of cancer. The vast majority of cancer risk factors are due to environmental (including lifestyle) factors, and many of these factors are controllable. Thus, cancer is largely considered a preventable disease. Greater than 30% of cancer is considered preventable by avoiding risk factors including: tobacco, overweight / obesity, an insufficient diet, physical inactivity, alcohol, sexually transmitted infections, and air pollution Not all environmental causes can be prevented completely such as naturally occurring background radiation. While many dietary recommendations have been proposed to reduce the risk of cancer, few have significant supporting scientific evidence. The primary dietary factors that increase risk are obesity and alcohol consumption; with a diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in red meat being implicated but not confirmed. Consumption of coffee is associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer. Studies have linked consumption of red or processed meat to an increased risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer, a phenomenon which could be due to the presence of carcinogens in foods cooked at high temperatures. Thus dietary recommendation for cancer prevention typically include: “mainly vegetables, fruit, whole grain and fish and a reduced intake of red meat, animal fat and refined sugar.” The concept that medications can be used to

Savannah Aulger will never have snapshots with her father on her first birthday, on Christmas or at a school event. The only picture she will ever have of them is the one as sweet as it is heartbreaking. Hooked up to an oxygen mask at the hospital, the man she would call dad cradled her in his arms for 45 minutes. He sobbed. He smiled. And there was no doubt that he loved her. “He would talk to my stomach when I was pregnant,” Diane Aulger said of her husband. “He was so excited for her.” The next day, Mark Aulger slipped into a coma. The Aulger family of The Colony, Texas, had a lot to rejoice about in the weeks before Savannah’s Jan. 18 birth, which was induced two weeks early so her father could hold her. A home movie on Christmas showed a pregnant Diane Aulger, 31, handing out gifts to their four children, the oldest of whom is 15. Mark, 52, who had just received the news that he had beaten cancer, played the guitar, providing a soundtrack for the Christmas morning festivities. On Jan. 3, life threw a curveball. Do those who practice alternative medicine keep themselves aware of the advances of modern science?

Question by Joe: Do those who practice alternative medicine keep themselves aware of the advances of modern science?
The advances of science, particularly those in metabolism, genetics, and nanotechnology, promise unprecedented medical techniques that will revolutionize the practice of medicine in the coming years. Things like targeted drug delivery, RNA interference, patient specific therapy, gene therapy, stem cell therapy, cloning, etc, will do so much in the fight against disease. As an example, work on T-cell engineering, combined with advances in our understanding of cellular communication in the immune system, will soon allow physicians to expose immune cells to particular antigens and tell them to attack and kill any cell that has it, or not to. Imagine what such techniques could do for cancer, or organ transplantation. We could train immune cells to target specific cancer cell lines, and they will wipe them out with ease. We could transplant organs from any person into any person. This is a tiny fraction of the possibilities promised by the advances of immune based therapy, and there are so many more fields. I could go on for days about the future of modern medicine. The ability to deliver RNA molecules to specific cells is already becoming a reality. Imagine the ease with which diseases like Type I diabetes mellitus, or cystic fibrosis could be treated when we can simply stick RNA into the cell that will activate the necessary genes, or serve as a template for the missing proteins. Imagine how quickly disease like Huntington’s will be wiped out.

Will the alternative practioners stay in the loop as modern science advances? If they elect the not to, how long do they really think they’ll have a customer base?

Best answer:

Answer by SkepDoc 3.0
The short answer is no, as they think they know better than thousands of dedicated and highly educated scientists, simply because it is “their body”

Anybody who uses homeopathy for example, is ignoring 200 years of scientific progress which invalidates the entire premise of homeopathy.

It is ironic that these same people who reject science when it comes to their personal health, are quite happy fly in airplanes and use personal computers without any sense of misgiving or second guessing.

Kinase Inhibitor MEK inhibitors Its Lead Advances Into Cancer

Article by Ellian Brworth

Additionally, Boehringer Ingelheim’s innovative compound Tovok? (BIBW 2992) will quickly enter its second pivotal trial, LUX-Lung 3 in first-line NSCLC. In addition, a brand new compound and potentially first-at school-molecule, polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) inhibitor, BI 6727, has shown such positive phase I results that it’ll be advanced to phase II.

Based on Dr Nasser Hanna, Connect Professor of drugs within the Division of Oncology at Indiana College and principal investigator of among the LUME-Lung studies, the commencement of those tests heralds another walking stone within the mission to combat the earth’s most typical fatal malignancy.

“While our fight to overcome cancer continues, cancer of the lung continues to be leading reason for worldwide cancer deaths regardless of the accessibility to numerous therapeutic options. The necessity to develop more recent, wiser treatments hasn’t been so urgent,” stated Dr Hanna.

“The reality is that certain in 2 non-small cell cancer of the lung patients who receive treatment fail their initial treatments and grow good enough to get additional options. The LUME-Lung studies will appear at whether adding Vargatef? (BIBF 1120) to straightforward second-line treatment routines will enhance the outcome of these patients, with 2,600 patients, is among the biggest medical trial programmes within this indication. There remains an excellent requirement for new remedies for cancer patients to avoid suffering and prolong existence,” he added.

Vargatef? (BIBF 1120), functions by concurrently suppressing vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs), platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFRs) and fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs)1 – all most importantly active in the formation of bloodstream ships and it is given like a capsule taken two times daily. As angiogenesis plays a pivotal role within the development of all solid tumours, Vargatef? (BIBF 1120) is presently being looked into in many signs including advanced NSCLC, cancer of the prostate, ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer.

Fda to initiate a Phase 1 medical trial in cancer patients using its innovative wholly possessed MEK inhibitor, ARRY-162. Recent research verifies the MEK path functions like a central axis within the proliferation of various growths including melanoma, non-small cell lung, mind/neck and pancreatic cancer. Array intends to concurrently develop ARRY-162 for treating both cancer and inflammatory disease. Array is presently finishing an international Phase 2, double-blinded medical trial with ARRY-162 in 200 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

“We’re excited to grow our proprietary MEK program into oncology for that potential advantage of cancer patients,” stated Kevin Koch, Ph.D., Leader and Chief Scientific Officer. “Growing evidence verifies that MEK inhibition, either alone or in conjunction with other agents, is a vital therapeutic strategy in dealing with cancer. We feel ARRY-162 is going to be best in selected populations of cancer patients, for example individuals with growths getting BRAF or KRAS strains as well as in specific combinations.”

Array thinks ARRY-162 is especially well-suited to use within cancer treatment and it has advantages over other MEK inhibitors presently in development, including greater potency, and enhanced safety and pharmacokinetics. ARRY-162 continues to be given to a lot more than 200 patients/volunteers in clinical tests for either safety assessment or treating inflammatory disease. The drug continues to be well-tolerated and shown significant pharmacodynamic reactions within the completed tests. Additionally, the organization has completed lengthy-term preclinical controlled safety studies and it has recognized a in a commercial sense viable synthetic process and dental formulation for ARRY-162.

Array is definitely an leader in the industry within the area of MEK research. Presently, you will find four Array-invented MEK inhibitors in clinical development: ARRY-162 and ARRY-300, that are wholly-possessed by Array and AZD6244 (ARRY-886) and AZD8330 (ARRY-704), each of which are now being produced by AstraZeneca PLC within the area of oncology under license from Array.

Dr. Goy Highlights Recent Advances in Oncology

Andre Goy, MD, MS, chairman, director, and chief of the Lymphoma Division at the John Theurer Cancer Center, explains that there are a lot of major advances happening in oncology at the moment and chooses three examples that represent major ways in which treating cancer is changing. 1. Advances in small molecule therapy has evolved the way solid tumors are treated. There are numerous examples of small molecule therapeutics in solid tumors that were approved by the FDA in 2011; including the BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib and the immuntherapy ipilimumab for melanoma and the ALK-mutation targeted therapy crizotinib for lung cancer. These agents are helping patients with metastatic disease who are in a palliative situation to achieve a better prognosis. 2. The B-cell receptor signaling pathway has an increased importance in lymphoma. The pathway has been targeted for a while because of its implication in a number of lymphomas. Three molecules have been discovered that affect the pathway, and they appear to show a lot of activity in CLL indolent lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma. 3. There have been advances in the technology used to assess the genetic differences between tumors. With newer technology, tumors can be characterized with sort of a “molecule ID card” within one type of cancer. The technology is becoming less expensive and therefore more feasible, and hopefully will be used more broadly used in the future.

Advances in Cancer Research

Article by David William

The medical advances that have been made in the area of cancer research over the last several decades have been nothing short of amazing. However, is it enough? Today, there continue to be countless numbers of people who are diagnosed and who suffer the consequences of intense treatments for various forms of cancer, some of which are not yet curable. And while doctors are continuing to make advances in the medical arena, more research needs to be done, which means that fundraising efforts really need to start happening more frequently.

Years ago, if you were diagnosed with cancer, there wasn’t much hope. All that the doctors might have been able to do was make you as comfortable as possible. However, today, there have been countless studies conducted and research has advanced so much along with technology, that many people are able to live with a cancer diagnosis until they are eventually cured of cancer. And while we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.

The best thing that has happened to the medical field has come from everyday people who care about the cause and want to fight for a cure for cancer. This means raising cancer awareness through the purchase of small things such as purple ribbon bears and pink ribbons to large scale things such as monetary donations to charity or organizing a massive fundraising event such as a 5k road race for a cure.

There is no doubt that one day, medical advances will give way to a cure for all forms of cancer, reducing a cancer diagnosis down to nothing more than the ‘common cold,’ but for now, we must continue to fight to raise awareness so that others around us who are diagnosed with cancer may still have some quality of life. This means improved treatments, earlier diagnosis and the proper medical tools that are needed to eradicate cancer completely.

While there is much speculation as to what causes cancer, no one person is entirely sure. For some, the cause is thought to be stress related while for others, it is thought to be a hereditary problem while for others, it is thought to be related to the environment that they live in (i.e. Pollution, etc.) And while no one cause can be pinned down as of yet, with the help of so many people in raising money for cancer research, it is the thought of numerous people that we are on the cusp of discovering a cure once and for all for cancer.

Dr. Yoneda on Advances in the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer

Ken Y. Yoneda, MD, associate professor of internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care, University of California Davis Cancer Center, discusses recent advances in diagnosing lung cancer for both the radiologist and pulmonologist. Yoneda describes screening for lung cancer using computed tomography (CT) as a huge breakthrough, but he feels that several things about the process, including cost-benefit analysis, still need to be worked out before it is fully implemented by radiologists. He references a study presented by Denise Aberle, MD, from UCLA, at the 10th International Lung Cancer Congress, August 11-14, 2011, that looked at implementing CT Screening for Early Detection of Lung Cancer. Pulmonologists have many new tools including the use of endobronchial ultrasound, CT navigation, and electromagnetic navigation, Yoneda explains. These approaches provide more reliable access to peripheral lesions and lymph nodes.

Endometriosis: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatments (Obstetrics and Gynecology Advances)

Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition, characterised by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. It is estimated that endometriosis affects up to 10 per cent of women during their reproductive years, causing debilitating pain and infertility. The aetiology of this condition remains poorly understood, however, evidence suggests that certain immune factors are almost certainly playing crucial roles in the pathogenesis and progression of this inflammatory cond
