What is the latest about tamoxifen causing a more aggressive type of cancer?
Question by : What is the latest about tamoxifen causing a more aggressive type of cancer?
I caught a bit about it in the Journal/Sentinel this month but would like more to share with our support group this month. Should we stop taking it???

Answer by hanora
Apparently not. It seems it lowers the risk of a recurrence or new primary of a common form of BC, but increases the risk for a rarer although more aggressive type. For most women the balance of probability favors tamoxifen. I’d like to know exactly what that “more aggressive” type is but newspapers usually don’t get that detailed.

List of Aggressive Types of Cancer
www.healthybalanceddiet.org List of Aggressive Types of Cancers • Malignant Heart Tumors Classic symptoms of malignant heart tumors are chest ache, chest tightness when lying down and breathing and fast heart rates and palpitations. Health experts say that the main cause of this cancer is smoking and exposure to toxins but there are also cases where it is hereditary. Almost all people with malignant heart tumors diagnosed at stage IV do not survive. • Lung Cancer In lung cancer, when the symptoms are already noticed by the patient, it has already managed to spread in the body hence treatment options becomes rigid because it has already affected other organs in which cancer cells come from the lungs. • Glioblastoma Multiforme (Brain Tumor) The Glioblastoma Multiforme is considered to be one of the most aggressive types of brain tumor and is commonly diagnosed amongst males though the reason behind this is still unclear. When this type of brain cancer reaches stage 4, the affected person will most likely survive the disease with only 12 months the most because the tumor cells of this cancer does not respond to conventional therapy but rather shows heavy resistance to it. Furthermore, relapse of the tumor is high. • Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic cancer belongs to the list of aggressive cancers because it can be detected by the time it has reached an advanced stage. This deadly cancer has very poor prognosis and its symptoms do not come out as it grows. In fact, a survey was …

Health: Terra med Alliance News Two Genes Cooperate To Cause Aggressive Leukemia Â
Article by terra med alliance leukemia org
Terra med Alliance News: Two genes, each one of which is known to cause cancer on its own, together can lead to aggressive leukemia. This is the conclusion from new research carried out on gene-modified mice at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The discovery has surprised scientists, and may lead to new treatments.Terra med Alliance News: The two genes are often present in mutated form in acute leukemias, but the mutations rarely occur together. Scientists have previously believed that the two mutated genes have exactly the same function: each one alone will lead to increased activity of a carcinogenic protein known as “RAS.” This protein, in turn, causes blood cells to proliferate more rapidly.”This is a surprising discovery that suggests that there is a mechanism behind the development of cancer that has not yet been recognised. It opens the way for new methods of fighting blood cancer cells with NF1 mutations,” says Associate professor Martin Bergö, who leads the research at the Wallenberg Laboratory at the Sahlgrenska Academy. One of the genes codes for the RAS protein, which is a known accelerator for cell proliferation in several forms of cancer. The other gene codes for a protein known as “NF1,” which is known to reduce the activity of the RAS protein. The research group at the Sahlgrenska Academy has previously used two different types of mouse models, one of them with the RAS-mutation and the other with the NF1-mutation. Both mutations individually cause a slowly progressing leukemia to develop in the mice. The research group has now combined the two animal models and shown that a very aggressive form of acute leukemia develops in mice with mutations in both genes.”The corresponding increase in the RAS signalling cannot explain the severe increase in disease aggressiveness, and this means that the NF1 protein may play a different role in the development of the leukemia than we originally thought and may not involve the RAS protein at all. The discovery opens the possibility of developing new treatments for patients who have mutations in NF1,” says Martin Bergö.The research group is now collaborating with another research group at the Sahlgrenska Academy, investigating the role that the NF1 protein plays, and how these new results can lead to new treatment strategies. Are certain cases of colon cancer more aggressive than others?
Question by xXEmoXScreamoXx: Are certain cases of colon cancer more aggressive than others?
My dad passed away from colon cancer in december of 2007 only after 9 months. but i read that the survival rates were higher than that. he had surgery, chemo and radiation. i was wondering if certain cases can be more aggressive and harder to treat than others?

I would suggest that it is very much a case of early detection . I think you should have an occult blood test done regularly it is painless and can detect pre cancerous polps which can be removed without too invasive surgery . The test is done at home by taking smears of stool samples over a three day period and mailing to a laboratory. Because you have a family history it is worth monitoring and having an early diagnosis

My mom has cancer/shouldn’t her dr.be more aggressive?
Question by angel: My mom has cancer/shouldn’t her dr.be more aggressive?
My Mom has a malignant spot on her lung. She hasn’t smoked for nearly 15yrs./no one else smokes around her. She’s had x-rays since for colds in the past. They found it after she had pneaumonia a month ago. Her oncologist put her on a med.(oral)that is for breast cancer/side affects include lung damage.I had to force her to get a 2nd. opinion.Should’t her dr. have told her to get a 2nd. opinion? He obviously doesn’t have the market cornered on curing cancer.Aren’t 2 heads better than 1 when it comes to fighting for your life? If they hadn’t seen it in the past & only it found now,was it there all along, just undetectable(too small)? If so,that means it’s grown, right? This spot couldn’t just pop up at the size it is(1/2 dollar)now, can it?If it’s grown, why would he put her on a pill.what would this pill do for her & why would he tell her to come back in 2mons.?Won’t it grow more in that time?My parents are in their 70′s.They still believe dr.s are like they were in the old days.

A second opinion is always good. Sometimes aggressive ways of treating cancer can be too much for older patients to handle, but it won’t hurt to hear it a second time. If you are concerned you should get your mother to another doctor.

Getting Aggressive with Mesothelioma  Â
Getting Aggressive with Mesothelioma  Â
Article by Thomas Ajava
Cancer is a diagnosis nobody wants to hear. Some forms of cancer are easier to deal with than others. Mesothelioma is unfortunately a bad one and often calls for a particular point of reference when it comes to treatment – an aggressive one!
Mesothelioma is a brutal form of cancer because it usually does not manifest until the very late stages of growth. The cancer is associated with exposure to asbestos fibers in the air, but it can take 40 years or more for the cancer to reach late stages of development that show clear signs. This makes it a rare, but very deadly form of cancer.
It goes without saying that you should consult with a Mesothelioma specialist if you are unlucky enough to be diagnosed with this disease. The treatment you receive will reflect your current diagnosis, but it is vital that you realize the nature of the disease will call for a different approach than you usually receive. Most people are told that conservative treatment is the way to go with most disease.
Mesothelioma treatment plans tend to be just the opposite. They are very aggressive because the cancer is usually discovered very late in the process. This means times is of the essence and there is little reason to wait to see how things development. You can expect your physician to have an aggressive plan incorporating chemotherapy, radial therapy and often surgery to remove large growth areas. This can be a shock for many patients who are used to doctors taking a calm, calculated and very slow approach to sitting and watching a health issue develop.
What if all else fails? What if the physician tells you there is no hope? Well, there is. The National Cancer Institute is a government agency that overseas clinical trials for new treatments for various cancers. Mesothelioma is certainly one of the focuses and even has its own section on the website for the agency. Regardless, the NCI can direct you to clinical trials on new Mesothelioma treatments, which means an out of the box approach that might do the trick.
Mesothelioma is a particularly nasty form of cancer. That doesn’t mean it can’t be beat. Expect an aggressive treatment plan.
