Shortness Of Breath?!?! Anxiety?
Question by : Shortness Of Breath?!?! Anxiety?
I am 19, I am rather inactive – I am starting my 3rd year of university in 3 weeks, though I am healthy, I mean I don’t have any physical ailments that could be the cause of this shortness of breath.
A few months ago I had a shortness of breath at about 11 pm and I kind of shrugged it off, went to bed (slept easily) & woke up with the same shortness of breath.
That day I went to a walk-in clinic; I used to have asthma as a child & thought this might be related. The doctor said my breathing was 100% & then asked if I had ever had an anxiety attack before.
I have really no reason to be stressed, so I denied it being an anxiety attack (I am not new to university, I don’t expect a stressful year, I am happily married, I am not working, I don’t have any financial issues so-to-speak).
The next day it still had not gone away and late at night I had a huge attack and started freaking out, as I felt as if I was suffocating, wearing a tight shirt that only allowed me to inhale partially – only about 1 in 10 breaths I felt was fully getting to my lungs. My mom rushed me to emerge that night – they did all kinds of tests, x-rays, & blood tests & stuff and the doctor assured me I am in perfect health. I asked him if it could be anxiety and he said it was possible but there was no medical test to determine it. He perscribed me an anti-anxiety pill.
I stopped taking it soon after because I was as high as a kite and uncomfortable with being that way, as well as the fact the pill did not help with my breathing.
It went away after about a week, came back a few weeks later & stayed for a few days & I just started getting it again today. Sometimes I am wondering if it might be little anxieties that are the onset of this – like a tiff with my husband or coming home to my dog eating my shoes.
Does anyone else have this feeling – & is there any way to deal with this if it IS in fact an anxiety attack? If you don’t think it is an anxiety attack, do you know what it might be?

I do think its anxiety. I get it too. I’m a 4th year at UC Davis and alot of times when I’m under alot of stress I find myself getting light headed and having trouble breathing. My doctor told me it was stress related.
I’m not big on meds, so when it happens to me I just remove myself from whatever situation is causing the stress, like go out to my backyard or something and just concentrate on my breathing. I take really deep slow breaths through my nose and then exhale through my mouth. I learned it in a yoga class. It works pretty well.

Could I have an anxiety disorder? Or OCD?
Question by sephy: Could I have an anxiety disorder? Or OCD?
Today I’ve really given this a lot of thought and would like to get an opinion. I know my best bet is to go to doctors, but I went a few days ago due to bronchitis, so I don’t wanna seem really odd lol.
Basically, I noticed my behaviour differs from most people so I decided to look up anxiety disorders, where I also stumbled upon symptoms of OCD.
I’ve noticed if I have a cough, I assume I have lung cancer or lung disease, and start googling the symptoms (worst idea ever). I frequently get the feeling I can’t breathe, or I kid myself into thinking I feel like I’m gonna be sick in an inescapable situation (eg, elevator, college interview, train). When I leave the house, I get worried that I’ve left the straighteners on, or brushed past the oven and accidentally left the gas on, or not locked the back door. A few times I’ve walked to the end of my road only to go back to check if the door has actually shut properly behind me. I’m currently job seeking, but I haven’t really applied for many as I’m sure that I won’t be able to do the job. Even shop assistant jobs. It’s stupid.
I know I sound like a major hypochondriac, and I know how annoying hypochondriacs seem. I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what this could be. Any help is appreciated x

Sounds like you could have issues with anxiety and an OCD problem, but I am not a doctor. I would suggest that you see a doctor again or a therapist that specializes in these disorders and they might be able to help. All of these symptoms could be brought on by the stress of being unemployed. Years ago I had panic attacks that almost kept me from going out in public for the very reasons you discuss here. I went to therapy and read books on anxiety which rally helped a lot. Good luck to you and don’t give up. I still experience anxiety but I now know how to diffuse it and get past it instead of letting it mushroom out of control.

Diagnosed with anxiety, is that really what’s causing my chest pain?
Question by Mantis: Diagnosed with anxiety, is that really what’s causing my chest pain?
I went to the doctor a few times this past month for a number of ailments, the doctor said I have anxiety. I had back pain for 2 months now, as I pulled my Rhomboid at the gym, but also neck and chest pains! The pain isn’t that I feel short of breath, but my heart starts to race (even when I’m calm!) and my chest starts to hurt. Not one side, but both sides. It feels like my lungs.
I’m opening a business also, I’m stressed about that. I’m also worried about a lot of things, but generally I’m a calm person. Stress has never been a factor in my life! I deal with stress very well, or at least maybe I thought I did.
Is chest pain really an anxiety symptom like the doctor said? He seemed to be not worried at all about it!
Thanks in advance

Answer by psu176
Well they are symptoms of anxiety. Try to monitor your feelings/mood/thoughts when you have an attack. If they happen when your stressed or worked up then it probably is anxieties. Now, if you do not feel that that is really the problem then get a second opinion.

Lung Cancer or Anxiety Question?
Question by meeeee: Lung Cancer or Anxiety Question?
Im 23 and ive been smoking for 6 years. I smoke about 6 to 10 cigarettes a day. I also suffer from anxiety and tried medicine but am now on an anti-depressant medicine that i started about a week ago (and im totally stressed). Right now, my throat feels thick and like I have a lump in it. My chest also feels like theres pressure on it. When I smoke, it seems to make it worse. i did some research and saw Globus Hystericus and that sounds like what I have. In all honesty, how “possible” is it that I have lung and/or throat cancer??? i know it is possibler but what are the chances?? Your answers are greatly appreciated. Im starting to really freak out.
Best answer:
Answer by maverick
No, I do not think you have any kind of cancer what I think is happening is when you drag the smoke into your lungs your swallowing a little of it and it’s causing some acid reflux that’s the lump in your throat it is not something to ignore. there are a lot of things in cigarette smoke to keep you addicted you may be allergic to one of a hundred chemicals they put in these things and that could be making your bronchial tubes tighten or if you have been coughing the muscles that come into play when coughing get fatigued. Drink 8 glasses of water per day at least eight ounces per glass walk ten minutes a day do not listen to music just walk and swing your arms this will help you think better make a goal and that goal is STOP SMOKING it’s not the cool thing when it affects your well being it’s the thing stupid people do so stop hanging with the STUPID PEOPLE and stop smoking then with all the money your not spending on cigarettes open a saving account just put your cigarette money in there and it will add up quickly use that and take a nice trip in the USA there are a lot of beautiful places to go

Anxiety or heart failure or something else?
Question by Crying: Anxiety or heart failure or something else?
i have smoked cannabis for almost 6 years now, at least 2 grams everyday, aswell as cigarettes, im now 17, so a few weeks back i smoked 1 joint with 2 of my friends, so i did not have much, and as i was walking home my world turned upside down, i could not feel my body from the neck down, and everything felt very.. “unreal”, my heart was beating at 140bpm (i know this because i called for an ambulance, but read on) so my heart was beating at 140bpm and i felt like i was going to drop dead, but i know it was not caused by the actual cannabis i had smoked on the day (it was not laced), this was my body paying me back for 5 years of abusing cannabis, i had felt like this in the recent past after using cannabis, but only very very mild, this time it was EXTREME, so when i got home i called for an ambulance in fear that i was having a heart attack, but i am also a VERY paranoid person (take that into account – again a symptom of cannabis abuse) so i got to the hospital and after waiting for 2 hours, still no doctor, by this time i felt better so i discharged myself, i got home and went to sleep, when i got up in the morning that was it, CANNABIS-I QUIT, on the spot (4 weeks later now and i have not even smelt the scent of cannabis) because to be honest what happened and what is happening is scaring the living daylights out of me, so 2 nights after i went to the hospital i was gaming as i usually do on my PC, and all of a sudden i became aware of my heartbeat, i was short of breath (but this time i did not have the “unrealness” feeling) again i thought i was having a heart attack, so i called for an ambulance again, when it arrived my BPM was 120, on the way to the hospital it settled down to around 85, so this time i stayed in the hospital and waited a painstaking 5 hours to see a doctor (so long because i did not have any chest pain to speak of), i sat down with the doctor, he listening to my heart, looked at a little scan that was monitoring my heart rate in the ambulance and said.. you are fine you can go home now, I WANTED TO PUNCH HIM!, and every so often since then i suffer from the following symptoms – shortness of breath, tight chested with small sharp pains, dizziness, a little feeling of unrealness, awareness and increasing of my heart beat, i have come to a decision that it is 1 of 2 things, the first and preferred one being anxiety, and the second one which i am dreading is heart failure. but the thing is i seem to diagnose myself with a new illness everyday, from superficial vein thrombosis, swine flu, lung cancer/disease, and the big one DEATH! i am just so paranoid and ANXIOUS that i think i am going to die, i still smoke cigarettes but i quit cannabis the day this started. my symptoms seem to accure when i smoke cigarettes, but not all the time, sometimes it just starts with no trigger, other than my mind thinking that i am going to die.
i am sorry for the huge wall of text but i am just not in the mood right now to perfect an essay, im trying to sooth my heart which is almost beating out of my cheat.

it is not uncommon for cannabis to trigger an anxiety disorder, sadly, you will likely be stuck with the disorder for life. I would recommend that your best course of action would be to consult a psychiatrist and a mental health professional to learn the best course for coping with a severe anxiety disorder.

Question by : Are these anxiety symptoms?
Hi
Yeah over the past 2 months things haven’t been going well for me. It all started when I was on the laptop and then I just randomly felt weird, around my nose and face which made me PANIC like crazy; which made me then feel like something is wrong with me. Then for the next 2 months I have had these different sensations, such as tingling in my feet, weak hands, shooting pains in my head, buzzing/vibration in my body, and I feel extremely depressed like whats going on with me; am I ill?
I have looked at symptoms of different diseases and now I think I have them, such as liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, brain tumor/brain cancer, cancer overall etc.
How can I overcome this? Im 14 by the way.

Born Robert James Byrd,(making him Bobby Byrd – not to be confused with the funk musician/Famous Flames member of the same name), in Fort Worth, Texas, he moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 15. As a member of the R&B group, The Hollywood Flames, he used the stage name Bobby Day to perform and record. He went several years with minor musical success limited to the West Coast, including being the original “Bob” in the duo Bob & Earl. In 1957, Day formed his own band called the “Satellites” following which he recorded three songs that are seen today as rock and roll classics. The Song was featured in the 1986 hit movie “Stand By Me”. Day’s best known songwriting efforts were “Over and Over” made popular by the Dave Clark Five in 1965 and “Little Bitty Pretty One” popularized by Thurston Harris in 1957, Clyde McPhatter in 1962 and the Jackson Five in 1972. However, Day is most remembered for his 1958 solo recording of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit, “Rockin’ Robin”, written by Leon Rene under the pseudonym Jimmie Thomas. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[2] “Rockin’ Robin” was a song covered by Bob Luman at Town Hall Party on 28 October 1958, The Hollies in 1964, Gene Vincent in 1969, Michael Jackson in 1972, and by McFly in 2006. Sometimes referred to as a one-hit wonder, because despite numerous recordings with a variety of record labels, Day never achieved another Top 40 hit apart from “Rockin’ Robin”. Day died after a long battle …

You will get relief by monitoring your water and liquid intakes. You may like to read the following. What helped the IBS boy will help you breath easy. I keep doing the same thing every now and then. I have always (without fail) felt that after 24 hours of no water periods I breath much better and much more deep. There is more than 100% improvement. Though I have no issues with IBS or breathing.
The medical community has no idea what is IBS, what causes IBS. My friends daughter’s diagnosis was IBS. After my friend spent Rs. 50K on various tests, he was told by doctors that she has problem in her mind and he should take his daughter to psychiatric.
Let me try to define the problem and give a solution.
People feel sleepy after they eat in excess or take too much of alcohol or sweets.
What is the reason for feeling sleepy? Again medical community is silent on this as well. But they give medicines for this as well? Should we really allow the doctors to give medicines when they do not know the basic underlying reason????
When a person eats something, it needs to be digested. The digestion process is know to be very energy intensive. When the body falls short of resources to digest the food, it tires out and sleeps. This shuts down the operations of the body except heart, kidney and other essential functions / organs.
When a person indulges into eating, drinking sessions which does not create enough energy resources, he becomes weak. After this whatever he eats is simply passed out immediately.
Over past 5-6 years I carried out various hit and trial experiments on IBS. I got success when I tried the following on a 19 year old boy.
This boy weighed 43kg, 5ft 8 inches height, total body water was 68%, muscles less then 5%.
I asked him to drink one glass of water 1 hour before each meal. Next day he told me that he got complete relief. But after 3 days he said his condition has gone back to old status.
Now I asked him to give up water and all liquids for 48 hours. The results shocked me. He was completely cured of the following –
IBS and mouth ulcers in 48 hours. Pain in legs after 6-8 months. I followed up with this person for next 15 months. There were 3 instances of IBS lasting 1-2 days on 3 occassions. The solution was change in water drinking habits. When he was on low water intake, he was advised to drink more water for 2-3 days. When he was on higher water intake he was advised to cut down on water intake.
It gave him complete relief.
I applied the same solution on 2 more person of 18-20 years of age. It worked simply by cutting down on water intake.
Now if you decided to try it the next problem is that one who is used to drinking water or other liquids and feel thirsty quite often.
First thing in the morning drink tea (on empty stomach). One should not take anything with tea. Tea on empty stomach leaves a bitter taste in mouth. Resist drinking water or any other liquid for next 3-4 hours. After this the bitter taste will be gone. AFter this there will be no thirst signals. For the next 48 hours there will be enough fluid in your mouth and food pipe. You can eat your normal meals minus any liquids for next 24 hours.
After having gone thru the above process go without water and liquids again after 2-3 days without taking tea first thing in the morning.
If the above does not give complete relief. Add salt to the water the next day after going without water. 3 grams of salt with 1 glass of water. 4-5 times in a day. Salt is a purifier and it will resolve the problems better. You will have to continue drinking water 1 hour before meal.

By this wall of text i imagine you are fixating on small details. When people get excited cortisol is released, and sometimes due to stress. It can lead to you fixating on details that can’t be analyzed to find a solution that will calm you down. Focus on how youre feeling and behaving and whether its realistic what youre feeling. The feeling wont vanish right away if you realize the anxiety is unfounded. But keep it in the back of your mind, breathe deeply and it should calm down in 10-15 minutes.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Everybody worries from time to time, but if your worrying extends to interrupt your daily life and cause debilitating anxiety, you may have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. While people with GAD may start out by worrying about simple things, this disorder can easily take over a person’s life and cause other medical problems. If you think that you have GAD, you should see your doctor immediately and talk about your various treatment options. People with GAD worry about normal things like money, healthy, relationships, and jobs. It is normal to worry about these things, even on a daily basis. However, if you have GAD, you will find that this worry is constant and excessive—and in many cases, irrational. People who are diagnosed with GAD are often so distracted and consumed with worry that it is impossible to think about or do anything else. From the moment a patient awakes to the moment he or she falls asleep, worry is a part of life. Often times, the worry has no foundation. Medical professionals do not yet know what causes GAD, so treatment and diagnosis can sometimes be difficult. There are a number of symptoms stemming from GAD which include nausea, difficulty breathing, muscle tension, headache, restlessness, fatigue, sleeping problems, a change in appetite, and sweating or hot flashes. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms and find yourself worrying often, you should see your doctor for help with what could be GAD. Treatment for GAD begins with ruling …

Q&A: Is this breathing problem anxiety? a disorder? PMS? something else??
Question by Kitzi K: Is this breathing problem anxiety? a disorder? PMS? something else??
I have problems breathing, i need to take a deep breath every few minutes and its getting worse, its kind of like a ‘sigh’ or a little bit like a yawn, but feels like I can never get enough air. Most of the time I feel like I shudder’ afterwards, almost like when a baby cries and is winding down afterwards and gives the little sobs.
I am feeling like I am suffering anxiety, i was on valium before and feel similar to the time before…. i also am tired, but insomniac, and then have burts of energy and then followed by very little motivation. I’m having relationship issues, money worries and have two small kids, but nothing has changed for the worse there. I also suffer badly from PMT/PMS and cannot seem to get it under control…..
Right now the breathing is worrying me, it may sound like i have a lot on my plate but thats just a part of it, and thats just normal for me – LOL! what do you think? could the breathing be part of the anxiety problem? Or maybe something else??

It could be a part of the anxiety. It’s highly likely, the way you explain it. But you should definitely go get checked out with your general health practitioner doctor. If asthma is ruled out, then you should bring these symptoms up with your psychiatrist or psychologist (I am assuming you’re seeing one). If you are seeing one, are you on any medications? The ‘breathing problems’ could be a side-effect of a medication. Either way, get it checked with a professional, immediately. Breathing is pretty important. *wink*

Dizzyness common with anxiety disorders?
Question by Healthy Guy: Dizzyness common with anxiety disorders?
I have GAD, and i have been doing really well as of late in controling my anxiety….im NOT on medication, but do take Klonopin if i need it….i take 1mg about ever 2 weeks if i feel i need somthing to relax. ANYWAYS- for the last week i have had no symptoms of anxiety disorder, BUT tonight i am…right now….
i was sitting here surfing the net then i felt funny in my head, i stood up and walked from one end of my hose to the other and i was unstable, but badly but basically a little dizzy, then my heart started racing FAST….i guess i had a little bit of a panic attack in there, but with controled breathing i made short work of this…
so my question is, is dizzyness like that common with theGeneral Anxiety Disorder /Panic Attack?
p.s. if you have suffered panic attacks, its like you can have different symptoms every time it happens…it sucks…thanks.
p.s. the dizzyness lasted around 2 minutes and was mild….DEFINITLY not the worst i have had…

Answer by Elizzabeth
Yes I to have anxiety attacks. One of the very first symptoms I ever had was dizzyness. And my head felt “weird”. (I don’t know any other way to describe it, just weird).
It may be different from person to person. When I get the dizzyness, it is only for a second or mabe a few seconds. Sometimes my heart feels like it is racing. That one I think is a pretty common symptom. Deep breathing and self talks help me. I have found that the more I exercise, the better I do.
*****
Other symptoms I have are (and you may have too) are numbing of the fingers, hands, and arms. (not all at once)
*****
As for your question, I think symptoms can vary everytime it happens. Just my opinion.
