My granddaughter has Cystic Fibrosis and is 15, she has very low lung function and had to be in the hospital recently because of a bad infection, she’s often been in the hospital. She’s going to be staying with me for a couple weeks, I will take care of her while my daughter goes on a trip she has to do. Is it ok to have cats around her? I got three cats recently. Is there anything else I should be particularly cautious/careful about while she’s here?

Well I would suggest having someone else take care of the cats for a little while.
The fur may irritate the lungs, and your granddaughter has enough trouble breathing as it is.
Maybe ask her mother, I’m sure she knows more about what the daughter can handle and be around. That’s assuming that she’s the one who accompanies her daughter to the doctors. Whoever regularly cares for her or a doctor is the best person to ask.

That seems odd, she might ought to ask the doctor for clarification…it’s possible that it’s for HER safety (weakened immune system being around a germy baby!) not for the infants! Radiation does not stay in your body unless you have radioactive implants (like in prostate cancer treatment), but my psychic powers (LOL) tell me your friend does not have a prostate!

I have cancer of the lyranx and my voice box as well as my food pipe is compteley blocked and has become a solid tissue. Can anyone who has done surgeries ( plastic ) please tell if an esophegus transplant is possible. We hear everyday of various parts of the body which we all though was impossible being now transplanted and hence my question. There is no such thing as an esophagus transplant. I know you posted this question for doctors but I used to work Head & Neck surgery so maybe I can be of help. Without more detailed information I’m shooting in the dark. First, let’s use real words. Your larynx holds the vocal cords (“voice box”) and your “food pipe” is the esophagus. If this type of transplant were possible, it wouldn’t be classified as “plastic” (cosmetic). I don’t know what type and stage cancer you have nor do I know what treatment you’re undergoing or have already received nor the outcome. Are you on G-tube feedings at this time? Are you being followed by or have had consults with a Medical Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, Head & Neck Oncology Surgeon, Head & Neck Reconstructive Surgeon? Unless I know more, I can’t offer more than this.

It was a residential school. They found asbestos in the dorms, so we had to stay in a different building til they cleaned it all out. When I returned to my dorm room, I found this white powder on my belongings…like my little cart I had stuff in. Do you think it was asbestos that I touched??

I doubt it; probably sawdust, sanding dust, or even regular ole dust. The folks who remove asbestos are required by the EPA to remove the dust along with the asbestos. Touching asbestos won’t hurt you; only inhaling it.

We thought it was lung cancer, until the PET scan said, brain cancer was more important. I didn’t know. He sent me an email after he did 3 weeks of full brain radiation that can only be done once. He never told me till after, and I was the one taking him to all of the diagnosis appointments. He’s 58, non-smoker, always worked, divorced, no children. He has a heart of gold. Now he says he does not want to see me because what’s the point. I think he’s trying to spare me and does not want to see me cry. I said that’s what friends do. We stand by each other, no matter what. Shall I stay away when he says he’s got hospital workers to take him back and forth? Shall I stay away when he says I can’t come over? I finally just went at 9:45 a.m. driving an hour+ to his home, and called and knocked until he opened the door. So different, lost most of his hair and skin badly burned. I still smiled. Please send your prayers – and ask your relatives around the world to pray,TY GOD bless

The material that surrounds the water heater and is also in the walls as insulation, contains asbestos and is dangerous for our lungs my mom says, my mom gets words mixed up sometimes , do you think she means asbestos or something else ? I worry about it day and night because I’m into healthful living, but I don’t want to worry about things that my mom is wrong about because she gets words mixed up all the time. What do you think she could mean by this, I would ask her but she gets really mad whenever I talk and she tells me to shut up ? If your house was built within the last 20 years, it’s not asbestos. It’s probably fiberglass–which is still no good to breath, and can cause skin irritation–but it does not cause mesothelioma (a deadly lung disease) like asbestos does.
If it was asbestos, it would be better not to tear it out without tearing down the whole building. Tearing out asbestos puts particles in the air, which can cause you to get sick. If it stays undisturbed, very little gets airborne.

1993 – 1995 were terrible years for the nhs…the conservatives were in charge. They basically wanted to run it down and privatise it..like they did with everything else. You can’t trust them with healthcare.

Ok, so I think its about that time for me to quit. I can’t believe it but I’m going on my 9th year as a smoker. I have tried quitting so many times but it never works. I am not a heavy smoker, 1 pack could last me the whole week and when I smoke I hardly ever smoke it completely. My biggest fear is gaining weight. My mother was 105 pounds ALL her life, she quit smoking and within the month she was 130 and has stayed there ever since. I know gaining weight shouldnt be an issue when cancer is in the equation but it’s still a fear. Is there a way to quit smoking without the weight gain? I have even tried printing up pictures of burnt lungs and plastering them all over my apartment but that doesnt work. Why is it so hard to quit something you know is so bad for you?? Any ideas? Suggestions? And please no rude comments about the fear of gaining weight, thanx.

Yesterday, after weeks of having chest pains, nosebleeds, and other painful symptoms, my close friend was diagnosed with Lymphoid Leukemia. He’s eighteen, and doesn’t show emotion well. He’s a bit of a tough guy, but he is a really great person. He’s being moved to a cancer center in Tennesse, which is a long way from Texas, where I live.
I’m not a stranger to cancer, my dad passed away three years ago from lung cancer. Even though that was horrible to deal with, it’s a different situation here, since I had a different relationship with my dad.
I’ve talked to my friend some since yesterday, but I don’t really know how to act while talking to him. Some of my friends have started to baby him around, but I don’t think that’s the best way to be. Should I act like everything is normal, or what??
I know this is a serious disease, but he’s strong, and I know that he can pull through if everyone prays and has faith.

The best thing you can do for your friend is act as if you never heard he had cancer–in other words act normal. Your friend will have enough people acting wierd around him. He needs normalcy to carry on and not be thinking of the disease 24/7. He also needs optimism and hope and to feel like an ordinary teenager not that sick dude.
Take your cue from him if he brings up the subject then tell him you know he can beat it. Let him do the talking and be a good listener. If he talks it’s just to get things off of his chest. He’s not looking for answers, just a friendly ear.
Trust your instincts–If you axt out of caring you can’t go wrong. If you are stuck just think of what you would like if you were him.

My aunt had to undergo the same, and was advised to stay away from infants for 24 hours after a treatment. Just to be on the safe side, I would say give it a full day. As I said, just in case! Better to be safe than sorry!
Also, they should mention something there, but they may not. Some people do not always take such things into consideration.

Allergy to cats is common. If she is allergic, exposure to cats may be fatal because of the cystic fibrosis.
