I’m told that the old vinyl floor tiles in the basement of a house that I am considering buying contain asbestos. If i decide to remove the tiles as oppose to covering up the tiles with another flooring materials as recommended by some professionals, what would the estimate asbetos removal cost be for a room with the size of: 21×11?

Might see if the owner will ( or must) absorb cost of removal as a condition of sale ( not likely) or give a little on the selling price .
Ask realtor & town bldg inspector what the regs are regarding presence of asbestos on a resale & who’s responsible to comply.
Some cities have an” asbestos free” deadline where it must be covered or removed by a certain M/D/Y.
Not inexpensive & usually varies little from contractor to contractor since abatement & disposal practices must be followed.
Cost? …. Have to shop around for prices in your area.
Often the cement which is used on VAT also contains asbestos as well & must be removed
If you are set on having it removed, might work both ends of the problem & see if a flooring contractor can have it removed & replaced
or an abatement contractor can have it replaced as a package deal.
On fmr job,VAT was often left in place & covered by contractors even in healthcare facilities….legally.
Not a panic item , just comes down to cost .

I am looking at purchasing a home but on the disclosure form from the seller, it shows that there is asbetos tiles on the basement floor.
I know asbetos is a problem but in this case how much would it cost to remove it? should this be a deal breaker?

The disclosure form is making you aware of the problem. You can do one of two things. You can require the tile is removed by THEM before you purchase the home (before closing) or you can get some estimates to have it removed and ask for a reduction in price by at least that amount. Or you could just walk away from the deal. If there’s asbestos tile on the floor there is likely to be asbestos in the walls along with lead base paint if the house is old. I would probably walk away unless you can ABSOLUTELY have the rest of the house tested for those qualities. They may exist and that’s why the owners are selling. Those are just my thoughts

You would need to completely leave your house during removal of asbestos. And you want to make sure you use a contractor with an asbestos license. Floating particles during removal are very harmful to you, specifically through breathing in, serious damage can be done to your lungs.

We painted over abestos tiles with a primer. Now we want to lay a new floor. The man at the store said that we have to remove all the tiles now because we activated the black glue. He said it would stay sticky for 20 years and bleed thru the cracks no matter what kind of floor we put down. It would be a huge job, plus the health risk of removing them. I need help!

If you really don’t want to remove them and you have the room, you’ll have to overlay with thick plywood for ceramic tile or underlay panels for carpet, laminate or hardwood. Figure out what floor you’ll be getting then ask them what is the best surface for that type of floor.

I had a similar issue a few months ago. Look on the internet or local yellow pages for an independent lab. They can tell you how to take samples and they will test it for you for a pretty reasonable cost.
