What is chemotherapy ?
Chemotherapy is a general term for treatments that use chemical agents (drugs) to kill cancer cells. Many different kinds of drugs are used, either alone or in combination, to treat different cancers. The specific drug or combination used is chosen to best combat the type and extent of cancer present.
Chemotherapy drugs are tested against various forms of cancer in an effort to find out which drugs work against that particular type of cancer. Multiple drugs, each individually effective against a certain cancer, are often combined to try and maximize the effect against the cancer. Drugs are combined so that there are few overlapping side effects, to make the treatment more tolerable.
Newer forms of chemotherapy are being developed and tested research centers throughout the world. Many of these drugs are based on an understanding of the biological differences between normal cells and cancer cells. These treatments are often referred to as “targeted therapies.” The hope is that these treatments will target the cancer cells only and spare normal cells, or at least greatly reduce the side effects of therapy.
How Chemotherapy Works ?
Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells. Cancer cells often multiply more rapidly than normal cells. Cancer cell are also less able to recover from the toxic effects of chemotherapy than can normal cells. Normal cells that divide rapidly, such as hair or blood cells, are also killed by chemotherapy. This results in common side effects such as hair falling out and blood counts dropping.

The following list is an overview of possible short- and long-term side effects that can occur as a result of chemotherapy. Keep in mind that some side effects are temporary, and others can be minimized through medication and management by your doctor.

Recently researchers discovered several biomarkers among a panel of proteins that show the development of pancreatic cancer in its earliest stages, which may increase detection tests and early treatments of the fatal condition.
Science Daily reported that the “five-biomarker panel that if commercially developed, may be useful when combined with a currently available test measuring a pancreatic-cancer biomarker called CA 19.9, which is elevated 80 percent of the time among newly diagnosed patients.”
The study involved experts from the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Michigan and the Belfer Institute of Innovative Cancer Science at Dana-Faber Cancer Institute all of which collaborated on the findings revealing that the biomarkers among the study’s test mice translated to similar biomarkers among humans.
This means that if the biomarkers among both the mice and humans are similar, the biomarkers will likely be able to increase early detection of the deadly pancreatic condition.
Because treatments are more effective during initial stages of this disease, this development of may revolutionize the detection of this and potentially other similar diseases, according to expert statements obtained from news reports.
Defining Pancreatic Cancer
The cancer develops in the tissues of the organ that commonly “regulates the metabolism of sugars,” according to the Mayo Clinic. Unfortunately, the Mayo Clinic also reports that the conditionis often described as a “leading cause of cancer deaths” because it is not detected in its early stages and has a very poor prognosis.
According to Science Daily, pancreatic cancer is “the fourth leading cause of cancer death… with a five-year survival rate of only 3 percent.” Also, 90 percent of the time a tumor can be successfully treated if caught early, however, if caught late it can only be successfully treated 10 percent of the time.
Each year more than 29,000 additional Americans are diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which also explained that pancreatic cancer is considered a “silent disease” because of the minimal and sometimes deceiving symptoms that are difficult to recognize and associate with pancreatic cancer. The NCI reported the following symptoms and signs of pancreatic cancer:
* weight loss
* nausea and vomiting
* weakness
* loss of appetite
* pain in upper back or abdomen
* dark urine from jaundice
* yellowing skin and eyes
Causes and Prescription Drug Dangers
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) there are several risk factors associated with the development of pancreatic cancer, but researchers are still unsure as exactly what causes the condition. However, the following are common characterisitcs making an individual more likely to develop the condition, according to ACS:
* age
* gender
* race
* smoking
* diet, lack of exercises and obesity
* diabetes
* chronic pancreatitis
* cirrhosis of the liver
* work exposure to pesticides, dyes and chemicals
* family history, hereditary conditions
* gene changes/inherited gene mutations
* stomach problems/surplus of stomach acids
Unfortunately, there is also another risk factor that can be attributed to man-made circumstances including the consumption of prescription drugs, which may cause pancreatitis leading to pancreatic cancer. One such prescription drug is known as Byetta, which normally treats type 2 diabetes but also causes the development of pancreatitis, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Health Advisory.
Byetta, from Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmceuticals, was released in 2005 and by August 2008, six individuals consuming the drug had been hospitalized for pancreatitis conditions, two of whom died. There have also been 30 additional cases of acute pancreatitis, which is sudden pancreatic inflammation, allegedly associated with the drug’s consumption.
Because Byetta-induced pancreatitis can potentially lead to a fatal pancreatic cancer it is imperative that an individual speak with a medical professional on the Byetta dangers as well as consider developing a Byetta class action lawsuit for the severe and irreversible side effects the drug may have already caused.

my grandma was just diagnosed with an 8cm tumor in her chest cavity. The doctor does not yet know if it is lung cancer or lymphoma, and she is going in for a biopsy on Friday. Right now, I am wondering what kind of treatments are available for lung cancer or lymphoma, and what are the success rates for both. Thank you.
Also, the tumor is on her bronchial tube, which has caused the upper portion of her left lung to colapse. So this has given her a deep chest cough, but as far as a i know she doesn’t suffer from any other symtoms.

I’m a lymphoma survivor I just finihed 6 rounds of chemo . There is chemo, and radition treatments available. It depends on the stage and kind of lymphoma she has and I don’t know about lung cancer but I do know they treat alot with chemo. The success rate for Lymphoma also depends on the stage and the kind of Lymphoma you have. I had stage 4 follicular Lymphoma even though it will come back I’m in remision.

He’s old, pushkar, very old. Chance are surgery wouldn’t help, and even if it did, it may return, as it did in a friend of mine who was the same age. But for a second opinion, do an online search for “primary liver cancer” and see what web sites are suggested. Then send someone at the site you choose an e-mail.
In the meantime, I’m afraid you will have to prepare yourself that maybe there’s nothing anyone can do: that his time here on earth is done, and life after this will be of a more heavenly sort. There is no pain there, just peace and tranquility.

Surgery as a prostate cancer treatment option can be the simplest way, but it doesnt always work, just in case a small bit of cancerous tissue was missed. If the prostate cancer is caught in time, the tissue can simply be removed, which makes surgery the first and simplest prostate cancer treatment option
A More Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment
The next prostate cancer treatment option is radiotherapy, or chemotherapy, to be used when surgery fails. It involves firing a stream of ionized radioactive particles into the infected tissue to destroy it or to break it apart. This is usually an advanced cancer treatment option, when surgery fails the next step is to try to destroy the remaining tissue. However, radiotherapy and chemotherapy have problems of their own, usually sickness, weakness, loss of hair and other symptoms that are associated with overexposure to radiation.
