how can emphysema affect breathing and gas exchange in the damaged lung tissue?
Question by : how can emphysema affect breathing and gas exchange in the damaged lung tissue?
the title is pretty self-explanatory any help?
im an AS level biology student and am a little confused, but i do know about as gaps increase in size the gas exchange is going to slow as there is more space and less tissue surrounding it so it slows the breathing rate but is there anymore any one can add?
or if i am wrong please correct me.

Answer by Mh Harrah
Emphysema is a pathological diagnosis defined by permanent enlargement of airspaces distal to the terminal bronchioles. This leads to a dramatic decline in the alveolar surface area available for gas exchange. Furthermore, loss of alveoli leads to airflow limitation by 2 mechanisms. First, loss of the alveolar walls results in a decrease in elastic recoil, which leads to airflow limitation. Second, loss of the alveolar supporting structure leads to airway narrowing, which further limits airflow.

My Dog Speck Has Breathing Problems, Does anyone know what this could be?

This is my little dog, Speck, and he has these breathing episodes. If anyone recognizes these breathing patterns and knows what the cause may be, please let me know. This little guy is the world to me, and I just want to know if there is anything I can do to stop these episodes or possibly prevent them from getting worse. They typically happen about once every 3 days, sometimes as much as twice a day, and sometimes he wont have them at all for a few weeks. His Vet has not seen these videos yet, but when i described the behavior to him, he said it was a “reversed sneeze”. However, the videos that I have seen on Youtube of dogs with a reverse sneeze doesn’t look or sound at all like what Speck experiences. Speck is a Chihuahua/Terrier mix. In August 2010 he will turn 6. Thanks

Ask your mother to make a doctor’s appointment for you.
With asthma, chest pain is generally not as frequent as yours is.
This sounds either like acid reflux disease (chronic heartburn) or a heart problem.

Sometimes I have trouble breathing while laying down and sometimes while sitting. What can be causing this?
Question by Jonathan: Sometimes I have trouble breathing while laying down and sometimes while sitting. What can be causing this?
I am 24, 359lbs, and 6′ tall. I don’t have asthma or any other respiratory problems or disorders. As far as I know, I don’t have any condition that can contribute to breathing problems. I also wake up feeling tired sometimes.
To answer Pitman Floyd, my posture is kind of stooped and I do suffer from back pain. My feet do get kind of swollen sometimes, but nothing real severe. Also, in the morning, my knees and feet also feel quite stiff.
In reference to t’s post, I do occasionally wake up with a headache and frequently wake up with a dry mouth.

could be Ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory arthritis which can cause breathing problems. But then it could be a million other things. Get checked out asap, request a blood / urine test and explain all the more serious symptoms

Is there a reason why I would stop breathing while I sleep?
Question by : Is there a reason why I would stop breathing while I sleep?
Okay, well only two times or so total as far as I know, I’ve been woken up because I wasn’t breathing. My body just woke up and I wasn’t breathing and I was struggling for air until I opened my eyes and started breathing. It’s scary.
The second time it happened, it was the morning and I was kind of having a dream, but it was a light sleep where I was sort of aware of my surroundings but dozing off. I woke up not breathing several times that morning, and kept falling back to sleep, and it kept happening.
I don’t snore or anything either, just to throw it out there. I believe that my dad has sleep apnea, if that has anything to do with it. But other than that, there are no sleep disorders that I know of in myself or my family. No one knows about this happening to me yet.
Thank you very much! I’m not so much concerned, as curious about this.

06-A-Causes of Poor Sleep, Insomnia, Brain Oxygen Levels and Breathing
What are the causes of poor sleep quality? What is the cause of insomnia on a cell level? Why do sick people have worse sleep for virtually all health conditions? We need to connect sleep with automatic breathing during sleep. In fact, your breathing is the main factor that defines your quality of sleep. Sleeping problems are present in normal people. About 10% of Western people suffer from chronic insomnia (Roth T, Roehrs, 2003; Pigeon, 2010) and many more have mild sleeping problems. What are their causes? Over 90% of modern normal people are heavy breathers (see the links with dozens of studies below). Sick people breathe even more, as over 50 medical studies testify. This relates to people with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, asthma, COPD, and many other chronic disorders. Deep and fast breathing causes low CO2 levels in the body cells. This makes the brain over-excited (since CO2 is a natural sedative of nervous cells) and body muscles tense (since carbon dioxide is a strong relaxant of muscles). For example, medical research suggests that hyperventilation “leads to spontaneous and asynchronous firing of cortical neurons” (Huttunen et al, 1999 – published in a journal devoted to neurology). These spontaneous and asynchronous signals or thoughts create insomnia and other problems with sleep, including sleep disordered breathing. In addition, low brain oxygen content worsen sleep due to anaerobic cell respiration caused by tissue hypoxia. This generates free …

CRUK | CancerHelp UK | Breathing and circulation exercises after surgery
This Cancer Research UK video is a guide to breathing and circulation exercises after surgery. It does not replace what your health carers tell you. You should always follow the advice they give you and check with them before doing the exercises. It shows you how to breathe deeply, cough and do leg exercises. Doing these after surgery will help to prevent chest infections and blood clots which can develop when you aren’t moving about as you would normally.

You will get relief by monitoring your water and liquid intakes. You may like to read the following. What helped the IBS boy will help you breath easy. I keep doing the same thing every now and then. I have always (without fail) felt that after 24 hours of no water periods I breath much better and much more deep. There is more than 100% improvement. Though I have no issues with IBS or breathing.
The medical community has no idea what is IBS, what causes IBS. My friends daughter’s diagnosis was IBS. After my friend spent Rs. 50K on various tests, he was told by doctors that she has problem in her mind and he should take his daughter to psychiatric.
Let me try to define the problem and give a solution.
People feel sleepy after they eat in excess or take too much of alcohol or sweets.
What is the reason for feeling sleepy? Again medical community is silent on this as well. But they give medicines for this as well? Should we really allow the doctors to give medicines when they do not know the basic underlying reason????
When a person eats something, it needs to be digested. The digestion process is know to be very energy intensive. When the body falls short of resources to digest the food, it tires out and sleeps. This shuts down the operations of the body except heart, kidney and other essential functions / organs.
When a person indulges into eating, drinking sessions which does not create enough energy resources, he becomes weak. After this whatever he eats is simply passed out immediately.
Over past 5-6 years I carried out various hit and trial experiments on IBS. I got success when I tried the following on a 19 year old boy.
This boy weighed 43kg, 5ft 8 inches height, total body water was 68%, muscles less then 5%.
I asked him to drink one glass of water 1 hour before each meal. Next day he told me that he got complete relief. But after 3 days he said his condition has gone back to old status.
Now I asked him to give up water and all liquids for 48 hours. The results shocked me. He was completely cured of the following –
IBS and mouth ulcers in 48 hours. Pain in legs after 6-8 months. I followed up with this person for next 15 months. There were 3 instances of IBS lasting 1-2 days on 3 occassions. The solution was change in water drinking habits. When he was on low water intake, he was advised to drink more water for 2-3 days. When he was on higher water intake he was advised to cut down on water intake.
It gave him complete relief.
I applied the same solution on 2 more person of 18-20 years of age. It worked simply by cutting down on water intake.
Now if you decided to try it the next problem is that one who is used to drinking water or other liquids and feel thirsty quite often.
First thing in the morning drink tea (on empty stomach). One should not take anything with tea. Tea on empty stomach leaves a bitter taste in mouth. Resist drinking water or any other liquid for next 3-4 hours. After this the bitter taste will be gone. AFter this there will be no thirst signals. For the next 48 hours there will be enough fluid in your mouth and food pipe. You can eat your normal meals minus any liquids for next 24 hours.
After having gone thru the above process go without water and liquids again after 2-3 days without taking tea first thing in the morning.
If the above does not give complete relief. Add salt to the water the next day after going without water. 3 grams of salt with 1 glass of water. 4-5 times in a day. Salt is a purifier and it will resolve the problems better. You will have to continue drinking water 1 hour before meal.

By this wall of text i imagine you are fixating on small details. When people get excited cortisol is released, and sometimes due to stress. It can lead to you fixating on details that can’t be analyzed to find a solution that will calm you down. Focus on how youre feeling and behaving and whether its realistic what youre feeling. The feeling wont vanish right away if you realize the anxiety is unfounded. But keep it in the back of your mind, breathe deeply and it should calm down in 10-15 minutes.

Breathing in cadnium, get cancer?
Question by : Breathing in cadnium, get cancer?
I am volunteering at a local nature center doing water nitrate testing. Part of the process involves mixing water with a cadium based powder (7% cadnium) Its in a little glass vial, and i take a tiny scooper and drop some in. I can usually smell the cadnium faintly when i open the tube, but close the lid as soon as im finished using it. however, cadnium is known to cause cancer, kidney failure, and lung disease, so im worried about the exposure. I’ll be doing this once a week for the next few months….. is this dangerous?

You best source of information is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the material you using. Also the containers instructions and warnings. If USA, it is required by law (OSHA) that all employers (private and government) have the MSDS available and all substances are properly labeled with their name (so you can look up the MSDS) and the hazard warnings. This includes volunteers.
I suspect the small percentage of cadmium in limited exposure concerns. What you should be avoiding from the MSDS I read on line is contact with the powder and inhaling the powder.

You are hyperventilating. You HAVE to calm down and tell yourself this IS going to pass and that nothing/no one is going to hurt you. MAKE yourself slow your breathing down or you are going to pass out. Trust me…..there is nothing wrong with your lungs/airways. Calm down, slow breaths.

Question by : When I focus on breathing, I hyperventilate.?
I’ve been wanting to try meditation, and part of it is focusing on breathing. When I think about breathing, and do it deliberately, I find myself unable to breath and I begin to hyperventilate. Sometimes, if I simply think about breathing at night, I’ll be short of breath all night and never get to sleep. I have an anxiety disorder. Could this be related?
Best answer:
Answer by emo_lee20
It definitely sounds like it could be part of your anxiety disorder. It almost sounds like you are (subconsciously) getting nervous about breathing which is throwing you into a panic attack/hyperventilation attack. Maybe you should try finding another way to meditate without concentrating on your breathing… Or find another way of relaxing without meditation.
