Q&A: Why is there a halo around carcinogens in Ames test?
Question by Jen: Why is there a halo around carcinogens in Ames test?
Why is there a halo around the disk in the Ames test around Asbestos or 5-bromouracil? Both tested positive as carcinogens. Why are there no colonies growing on this part of the plate?
Best answer:
Answer by LAlawMedMBA
The Ames Test uses four auxotrophic strains of bacteria, all of which have genetic defects making them highly susceptible to mutagenic chemicals. The chemical to be tested for carcinogenicity is first incubated in a mammalian liver extract containing metabolic enzymes in order to convert them into cancer-causing compounds. All of the strains are unable to synthesize histidine. Salmonella tymphimurium has a defect in its lipopolysaccharide coat; one strain detects base-pair substitutions; the other three detect different types of frame-shift mutations. A chemical’s carcinogenicity can be detected within hours, or at most within a few days, by the inability of colonies to grow in the vicinity of the carcinogen.

What types of cancer do carcinogens cause?
Question by Danny: What types of cancer do carcinogens cause?
I’ve looked everywhere for this and I am unable to find it, could anybody help me? I need this for a science project I’m doing, so if you could help me go right ahead.

Answer by Emily
I believe carcinogens can cause all types of cancer. I am an aircraft mechanic and work around hydraulic fluid alot and they brief us about the dangers of breathing in atomized fluids as they are a carcinogen and in this case, could cause lung cancer.
I also found this “Chemically-induced cancer generally develops many years after exposure to a toxic agent. A latency period of as much as thirty years has been observed between exposure to asbestos, for example, and incidence of lung cancer.” curtosy of http://scorecard.org/health-effects/explanation.tcl?short_hazard_name=cancer
And i think this site will give you a rundown of different kinds of carcinogens, and how the affect the human body http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=13276&page=2
good luck on you project!

Carcinogens: Things That Cause Cancer (Cancer Causing Agents)

www.encognitive.com Carcinogens Daniele from Italy, “What causes cancer?” Anything, such as substances or radiation, that comes into contact with our cells and is not biochemically compatible with our cells. Cancer causing agents are known as carcinogens. Through the cumulative effect, these carcinogens build up in our cells and cause them to mutate. There are known carcinogens and suspected carcinogens. Examples of known cancer causing agents are the hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes, asbestos and many others. Suspected carcinogens are aspartame (diet drinks), genetically modified food, factory farmed meat and many others. Most carcinogens (again, carcinogens are things that cause cancer) are specific to cancer sites. For example –the chemicals in cigarettes and asbestos target the lungs, causing about 90% of lung cancer. –the carcinogens in red meat often affect the colon and stomach, contributing to colon and stomach cancer. –the aluminum in some antiperspirants targets the breasts, which is suspected of contributing to breast cancer, since there are ducts that connect the armpit to the breasts. –electromagnetic radiation from cellphones and other wireless devices are specific to certain brain cancers. The excitotoxins in aspartame are specific to certain brain cancers. From a physiology view, each cancer is thought to start from one abnormal cell. The genes of that cell that control how cells divide and multiply seem to be damaged, so the abnormal cell does not …
