What causes ankle and leg swelling/water retention?
Question by lgdtexoma: What causes ankle and leg swelling/water retention?
I am 48, previous smoker, quit 1 yr ago. Doc has given me all lung tests, heart tests, ct angio, 2D echo, songrams, ultrasounds, ct abdomin, diabetis test, thyroid test, cirrohsis tests, and more. I am on a diuretic which gets most of the water off, but not all. I am miserable and would like to know what is wrong. I am treating the symptom – not the illness.

What causes fevers, chills, night sweats resolving into cough?
Question by Jay S: What causes fevers, chills, night sweats resolving into cough?
My spouse developed high fever, chills, decreased appetite, fatigue, achy joints, and mild diarrhea. Two days later, I developed the same symptoms with fevers, chills, rigors, night sweats, decreased appetite, and very mild bowel symptoms.
Neither of us have had flu shots, so we assumed it was the flu. Our kids, who did have the shot, did not seem to get the illness. The above symptoms lasted 4-6 days for both of us during which time we were laid up in bed.
As the initial illness got better, my wife began to develop a sore throat and cough. She also developed wheezes and crackles in her lungs (no need for a stethoscope to hear those!). She was only coughing up clear spit – nothing green. As my illness got better, I followed suit (no sore throat though, but cough) and now as I breath in and out I can hear my lungs sputtering and popping. I haven’t coughed up anything green, but I did just cough up something (very small, maybe 10mmx3mm) that looked like a small bit of lung tissue.
Only during the initial illness did either of us have fever. Neither of us have fever now, and other than the cough and junky lungs, we feel fine.
I haven’t really heard of any lung illnesses that start off so bad with fever/chills but then leave a person with such a terrible cough and junky lungs and no other symptoms (fever). I would assume that pneumonia and fever always go hand-in-hand, so if our initial illness was some kind of viral/bacterial pneumonia (instead of the flu), shouldn’t we still have a fever?
What are the possible causes in this case?
Best answer:
Answer by sheloves_dablues
Sounds like an infection to me. And no, a fever doesn’t have to be present to have a bad cough and junky lungs. Why would you want to create more symptoms? The fact is, you are both suffering from a respiratory illness. If if persists, consult your doctor.

If smoking is deadly, how can heavy smokers live till 80 or more and die of natural causes?
Question by : If smoking is deadly, how can heavy smokers live till 80 or more and die of natural causes?
I am a smoker and smoke around 10 cigarette’s a day. i mostly smoke after meals and at night before sleeping. I have been smoking for almost 5 years now. I know smoking can cause lung cancer but how can you tell if you are gona get it or not cause some people get it and some people stay healthy till they die even after being chain smokers for all there lives.
Best answer:
Answer by abrupt_silence
Actually most smokers that quit before old age or even smoke until their old age have breathing problems. If you see someone with an oxygen tank or nebulizer age 50+ its usually because they smoked. You can’t tell if you’re going to get cancer, if there were a way to tell it’d save a lot of lives. Some people are just heartier than others when it comes to being able to stay generally healthy well into their dying days.

What causes lung infection and bronchitis, besides bacteria&virusses?
Question by miss_chanandler_bong123: What causes lung infection and bronchitis, besides bacteria&virusses?
Best answer:
Answer by Mubz
By definition… Lung infection can only be caused by a bacteria or virus (the infection bit). In fairness however, technically I suppose a fungus could also be a kind of infection, so maybe fungi? But I have never heard of any instance of this happening.
Second one… Bronchitis. Again, as you know predominantly caused by bacteria or viruses. Other things can cause bronchitis though. Bronchitis is just inflammation of the bronchi as exudate has leaked from the blood vessels and with it white blood cells. Late response asthma can be a cause of bronchitis as can the inhalation of irritant substances such as fine dust, abestos, or even plant spores (in the case of farmer’s lung).
Hope this helps!

does this cause/effect paragraph show a clear topic sentence, at least 3 causes and 3 effects,is it in?
Question by james_jass: does this cause/effect paragraph show a clear topic sentence, at least 3 causes and 3 effects,is it in?
concrete, vivid language, and is it in chronological order?
(1) Smoking has many serious effects. (2) The most obvious effect is the deterioration of a smoker’s health. (3) Smoking increases the risk of lung disease, increases blood pressure, increases the risk of heart attacks, and reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain. (4) Smoking creates respiratory problems. (5) A smoker’s cough expels phlegm, a thick mucus in the nose and the throat that wants to escape the body. (6) Prolonged use may lead to emphysema and the need to hook up to a machine to pump enough oxygen into the lungs. (7) Another effect of this habit is that smoking breeds halitosis; a smoker’s breath always smells foul and repulsive. (8) Smoking frequently results in social isolation because fewer people smoke or want to be in the presence of second-hand smoke. (9) Friends and acquaintances often bluntly tell their smoking friends that they don’t want the smell in their cars or in their homes. (10) The strong, offensive odor of smoke clings to smokers’ clothing, hair, and skin. (11) The final effect of smoking is that it depletes the pocketbook. (12) Smoking is now an expensive habit, and the price of cigarettes continues to rise. (13) The effects of smoking are many, which leaves one wondering why intelligent people do not find a way to break their harmful addiction.
