My Husband just purchased a new house. (It is about 9 years old) Everything in it is builder’s grade, including ugly popcorn ceilings. What is the best way to remove it? We will do all the work ourselves. I am anxious to get some paint on these WHITE walls and just need to get started!

Where can I find an off white, almost grey-ish looking popcorn ceiling spray?
Question by QuestionGirl: Where can I find an off white, almost grey-ish looking popcorn ceiling spray?
I found some spray in a can, but it’s way too gleaming white for my ceiling. I thought it might fade or get a little less white after a while, but the test area was done nearly a year ago, and it’s still white as ever. Does anyone know where I can find a can of spray-on popcorn ceiling stuff? I’ve tried Wal-Mart and Target. Please answer only if you’re super sure. Thanks!

We purchased ours from Lowes. They do have a small variety but when dealing with popcorn there isn’t a large variety out there. If you do not have a Lowes, try Home Depot or another home improvement type store!
Hope this helps!

How to paint a ‘popcorn ceiling’?
Question by !?: How to paint a ‘popcorn ceiling’?
I was wondering if one person could paint a popcorn ceiling just to patch up a few places and what brush would I need to use. If I was really careful with the paint, would I still need to cover all my furniture with towels? Thanks.

Answer by leslie
You have to paint a popcorn ceiling with a roller. A brush will knock off the popcorn and it will be easily noticeable. You should paint the entire ceiling for aesthetic purposes since the paint has probably discolored over time. We have a large house and the painter decided to spray the ceiling. It looks gorgeous, but what a task! Click on the link below for exact details of how to paint your ceiling.

Get an extension for your roller. Like a broomstick. Your roller should be threaded. You are going to have to get a bigger ladder to do the trim.

There is a spray called ‘Popcorn Ceiling repair’ usually found at your local hardware store.
edit: if you do use the kilz do not use a roller on the ‘popcorn’ will come off on the roller. use a sponge brush, and dab.

can I hang new dry wall over popcorn ceiling?
Question by mbjag387: can I hang new dry wall over popcorn ceiling?
I am in the process of buying a house. It currently has that annoying popcorn. I get that it makes the few imperfections in the ceiling less noticeable but to me it looks horrible. Now the attic has like a foot thick blown insulation so I dont want to remove existing ceiling so I guess my question is do I need to scrape all this crapcorn off or can I simply put the new stuff right over it. Thank you ahead for any help anyone has for me.

Popcorn ceilings!!! What do I do to the ceiling after removing the popcorn / cottage cheese texture???
Question by ribbontree: Popcorn ceilings!!! What do I do to the ceiling after removing the popcorn / cottage cheese texture???
The newest thing in remodeling is removing the popcorn ceilings. But, the remodeling shows on tv do not say what to do to the ceilings once you have removed the popcorn. Is it supposed to be left flat, textured in some way?? Which way is the best??

After we removed ours from the bathroom (which took forever and got in my eyes!), we painted it. It was flat and actually turned out looking very well done. It only took two coats of white paint to make it look like it had always been flat.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a dark neutral like “otter” in a flat sheen would look great + it should coordinate with whatever colors you already have in your room.

How much would it cost for new sheetrock and fixing ceiling tiles?
Question by K_Nic87: How much would it cost for new sheetrock and fixing ceiling tiles?
I’ve been thinking of maybe moving into my grandmothers house now that she has passed away. No one has lived in the house since December of 2007 and it has kind of gone down hill since. In the dining room between the kitchen and the den, the ceiling, which is sheetrock that has the circular..or flower design don’t remember what you call it is messed up in the corner. I guess it has leaked where it rained sometime and there is black mold growing in that spot where it leaked. I know the black mold is dangerous. Does that mean I need to redo the whole ceiling or just that one spot? I know the black mold showed up sometime in 2009. Also, in one of the bedrooms she had the tile ceiling and part of it is trying to fall in where it has leaked and the same problem in the den in one area. So with that do I replace all the tiles or just the ones trying to fall in? Or should I change it out to sheetrock? One issue is the den ceiling has these dark brown wooded things going across the top of the ceiling. Not sure what you would call it. Anyways..I didn’t realize how much work was involved until I went yesterday. The ceilings wasn’t like that til recently because no one has lived there in a while. Also, it needs a new roof because the shingles are old. I was told those shingles are dangerous ones consisting of abestos because my fiance said it looked like some from way back that they don’t use anymore. It’s a very nice roomy house, but my grandmother just never really changed it up that much. I just need some opinions on what I need to do and some estimates.
Best answer:
Answer by T C
Here is what you do
Call three roofing companies for an estimate ….you did not give any measurements so I cannot give you an estimate on the roof …..plus it sounds like some of your deck {roof deck} will need replacement.
While you are gathering estimates, you can start removing the bad rock areas to see how much needs replacement. You won’t be able to tell until you tear into it and see how much mold and other damage is there.
You don’t want to do anything until the roof is repaired at which point you can decide if you want to do it or hire someone

Q&A: Finding studs in a popcorn ceiling?
Question by : Finding studs in a popcorn ceiling?
I would like to move my chandelier over, but I need to make sure it’s secured in the wooden beams above. I called our apartment complex and they are not sure which way the beams run. I do have a stud finder, but I’m not sure if it will work once it’s horizontal on the ceiling, and even if it does, we can’t run it along popcorn ceilings like we could if they were flat.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Best answer:
Answer by Mark
look for any nail pops out up on the ceiling and that will tell u where a stud …where the light is now may be a ceiling joist….most house framing the studs and joist are every 16 inches on center…so get a tape measure and a hammer and nail…after u find where a joist might be, then measure where u want the light to be and use the nail to poke through the ceiling and see if u hit a ceiling joist

How do I touch up popcorn ceiling?
Question by Suz: How do I touch up popcorn ceiling?
My boyfriend has redone the half bath downstairs. To put up the crown molding, he had to sand down some of the popcorn on the ceiling. He sanded out a little too far…how can he touch up the ceiling so that it isn’t such a big contrast to the popcorn right beside it?

Answer by firemage86404
Popcorn ceiling being the rough textured ceiling that always drops pieces if you accidentally hit it? (Such was the case with crickets when we came back to our home after the summer and had to remove them from the walls and ceiling when they crawled up there). I would recommend sanding down the ceiling and getting rid of it, it makes the air quality better, it is less of a hassle and if something happens such as a roofing tile change or an earthquake or some sort of disturbance, the stuff wont fall all over the place.
