lung cancer is there a chance of survival?
Question by ejoninamar81: lung cancer is there a chance of survival?
My good friend has been diagnosed with small cell carcignomia(lung cancer) not sure what stage yet but is there a chance he will survive this. all my research i have done online doesnt make this seem like a possibility. i have asked many questions bout this sorry just very confused concerned. He has two small children they are 2 and 5 and i just feel so bad for him. So far what we know is that both lobes in the left lung are 45% affected, he has been coughing up blood and experiencing shortness of breath. He was just diagnosed and pretty much just accepted he is gonna die, but i am having a hard time with it. I dont know what to say to him about it, it makes me tear up everytime i think about it

How much time do we have left before she goes? Or, does she still have a fighting chance?
Question by tab227: How much time do we have left before she goes? Or, does she still have a fighting chance?
My aunt is 53 and has been suffering from cancer for about 4 years, she has undergone radiation and kimo treatment for breast, liver and a couple other places and has fought hard through it. She has been doing great for the last few months until recently when they found her to have cancer in her brain, they started radiation treatment this last month and she’s been having a hard time with it.
She was found unconscious this morning and rushed by ambulance to the hospital where they put her in ICU. The doctors said her organs were beginning to shut down and gave her children two options; to let her die or to work with her aggressively. Her children asked them to work with her and they rushed her over to the shock-trauma unit where they are hoping she will be a little better by morning.
I am close with my aunt and I am having a really hard time with this. I want to ask to go see her but with my cousins going through this shock I don’t want to stress anyone out even more by treading where I shouldn’t at such a sensitive time. I really, really want to see her right away if she might not make it.
Is there a chance she’ll pull through this? Or, is she going? If so, how much time?
Best answer:
Answer by Denisedds
Your cousins should let the family come and say good-bye to her.
If you are asking if she can be cured the answer is no.
No way of knowing how much time she has. If your cousins insist and she has not made her wishes known, it can be dragged out for quite awhile.

Since every person born has a chance to cure cancer, shouldn’t we, with all due haste, start making babies?
Question by : Since every person born has a chance to cure cancer, shouldn’t we, with all due haste, start making babies?
I mean, shouldn’t we have paid breeder women to just pump babies out one after the other? That’s what all the charity money should go for. Supporting breeder pens to make children who will each have like a 1% chance to cure cancer (or whatever).
Or is this maybe the dumbest idea I’ve posted in like… a week. Right above my idea to create a new inland fresh water sea by pushing the moon back into the Earth and letting the crater fill with rain water.

Would there be a chance that I would be at risk for Uterus Cancer?
Question by Mari: Would there be a chance that I would be at risk for Uterus Cancer?
I was diagnosed w/colon cancer stage 4 in Aug. 2004; cancer returned in the Lung on Aug. 2006. Completed radiation. Recently had a PET scan, all cleared but radiologist did indicate that my Uterus was swollen.
I was diagnosed with colon cancer stage 4 at the age of 40.
Best answer:
Answer by Ken O
You’re not giving your age in this blurb, but based on the fact you had colon cancer I’m guessing you are 50+ (ie post menopausal). There’s a lot of reasons you may have what appears to be a swollen uterus. The most obvious would be menstruation, but if you’re post menopausal than that isn’t likely. Other causes for enlarged uteri is myomas (benign muscle tumors in the uterus), a wrong reading on the scan (can happen frequently), or uterine cancer. Your doc may want to do a uterine ultrasound to see the uterus and the lining of the uterus more clearly. The most common presenting symptom for uterine cancer is bleeding. If you’ve had bleeding (post menopausal), and have this finding on scans then you might want to show up earlier to your gynecologist to discuss the findings.
Best wishes.

Q&A: What is his chance of survival?
Question by PhoenixStrike177: What is his chance of survival?
My cousin’s fiance has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. He is only 35, and until 4 weeks ago was completely asymptomatic- at this point he developed a lot of fluid on the lungs that was drained but then a tumor was found. The tumor is primary in the lungs and it doesn’t seem to have spread.
I know that no one can give me a definite % chance of survival for him, but if anyone knows generally the survival rates of a man in their mid 30s, smoker (but has now stopped), with primary lung cancer that seems to not be advanced or has spread then I’d be very grateful. And if they do manage to treat him what is the chance of it returning?
Thanks Red_dogg, pretty much conformed my thoughts that the prognosis will be poor. Blake- it’s malignant- he has a diagnosis of lung cancer, not just a growth or tumor.
Best answer:
Answer by red_dogg_694
First of all, I’m really sorry about your cousin’s fiance. Here is what I found:
Lung cancer is a killer and survival rates are poor. There are only about 330,000 long-term survivors of lung cancer. Approximately 60% of people who are diagnosed with lung cancer die within one year of diagnosis, 75% die within 2 years.
Early diagnosis does increase your chances of survival. If lung cancer is found before it spreads to lymph nodes or other organs, the average 5-year relative survival rate is about 49%.

Q&A: Do I have a chance of developing cancer?
Question by Esmeralda: Do I have a chance of developing cancer?
I read somewhere that we all have cancer cells or that it’s from genetics.
My mom passed away from lung/brain cancer and liver dysfunction, but she was a very healthy person. She always exercised and ate healthy. She never smoked.
Her side of the family smoke a lot (all in Mexico, not with us), so I don’t know if it was because of second hand smoke.
I think only like 3 have passed from cancer (out of our extremely large family).
My grandpa died of kidney stones, never smoked.
My grandma is still alive, she is 80-something so I don’t think it’s genetics.
I am so confused why she passed. She was so healthy..
Thanks.

Why do some people develop cancer while others don’t? Researchers are still trying to answer this question.
Cancer develops when DNA gets damaged, causing a genetic mutation. DNA is the primary genetic material inside every cell that influences everything it does.
But sometimes, when damage to a cell’s DNA cannot be repaired, a process is activated that causes the cell to reproduce uncontrollably. Scientists have compared this process to a switch being flipped from “off ” to “on.” Eventually the number of mutated cells becomes large enough to form a solid tumor or a cancer like leukemia that travels throughout the body.
DNA can become damaged in a variety of ways and increase your risk of cancer. Some people may inherit damaged DNA genetically, making it more likely that they will develop certain types of cancer. Genetic factors are responsible for up to 10% of all cancers depending on the type. The other 90% are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors that you may or may not be able to control.
However, just because you inherit a genetic predisposition doesn’t necessarily mean you’re predestined to develop a certain kind of cancer. In the majority of cases, cancer develops because of a mysterious interaction of different factors. So while you may have a genetic tendency for cancer, that doesn’t always mean you’re fated to develop it.
Similarly, inheriting a genetic mutation isn’t the same thing as having a family history of cancer. Lifestyle and environmental influences, such as dietary habits that are passed down from one generation to the next or exposure to secondhand smoke in the household may have more to do with a family history of cancer than genetics.

Does it sound like there is a high chance of lymphoma?
Question by ashleemaeita: Does it sound like there is a high chance of lymphoma?
I’ve been poked and prodded and finally I did a CT/PET scan. The PET report said, “multiple enlarged superior mediastinal, pretracheal, subcardinal, and right hilar lymph nodes…increased tracer localizaton with average SUV’s in the region of 9.9 with maximum SUVs of 12.6…focal tracer localization in a right infraclavicular lymph node and base of right neck…5mm pulmonary nodule in the right middle lobe is very nonspecific.” Words have been omitted but you get the drift. There were no other places that had enlarged lymph nodes and the hematologist says lymphoma or inflamation/virus. I’ll have my biopsy done soon but I wanted to know:
Are the SUV’s high/sound abnormal?
What types of virus make lymph nodes act like this?
Should the amount of lymph node clusters alarm me?
Thank you in Advance!
“Impression: 1. multiple markedly enlarged, mediastinal, right hilar, and right neck base lymph nodes with marked increased tracer localization. These findings are most consistent with lymphoma. Needle biopsy is recommended for further characterization.
2. There is a 5-mm pulminary nodule in the right middle lobe is very nonspecific, but may represent lymphomatous involvement of the right lung.”
I do have mild anemia. No sickle cell. 18 year old Black F. Blood work shows increased immunoglobulin g, low tibc and low hematocrit.
Been tested for Mono and Lyme both negative.
The doctor never showed me the bloodwork and PET scan papers just went over and explained them to me. I’m just seeing these copies today!
I’ve had symptoms (low blood pressure, anemia, fever of 101, lost 20 lbs in a month, night sweats, itching, body aches, malaise, dizziness, loss of appetite) that confused several doctors, leading to the hematologist’s appt.
Best answer:
Answer by Denisedds
You omitted the most important part of the report, the radiologist’s impression. These are questions you needed to go over with the doctor who ordered the test. It’s a little strange to be referred to an oncologist without being diagnosed with cancer. Do you have a blood disorder? Other tests would have been done before a PET. Those findings, your age and your labs are also missing information. Several viruses can cause multi chain adenopathy, EBV, HIV, influenza, etc. and chronic infections.
EDIT: Thank you for the additional information. I am sorry to say it does sound like lymphoma and it is likely a stage 2. I know this may sound strange because you are an adult, but it is best for you to be treated at a children’s hospital. Treating patients up to about the age of 21 is different than treating older patients and is highly specialized. In recent years the incidence of childhood and young adult cancers has increased, but the mortality rates have decreased primarily due to children’s hospitals. Teenagers and young adults treated at regular hospitals do not do as well statistically. They will need to remove an entire lymph node whole to know exactly what kind of lymphoma you may have. This is preferred over a needle biopsy. I hope I’m wrong about your diagnosis, but I don’t think I am. You should know if you do have lymphoma the chances of cure are very high and you should do well. Best wishes.

Your credentials are pretty good, although your GPA is on the low side. Your test scores are nice, though. Everything pretty much shows that you have a good chance.
However, “chance me” is not a phrase. It literally bears no meaning whatsoever. I hope your essay was written better than your question.

What chance is there that a 4mm nodule is cancer?
Question by graddysj: What chance is there that a 4mm nodule is cancer?
August 2008 I had a Ultrafast CT scan done on my heart, when I got the results back it stated I had a 4mm pulmonary nodule in the Superior segment of the right lower lobe. Of course I am worried to death. I plan to go back once it has been a year since I am a prior smoker. April of 2004 I had a Pulmonary Embolism and Pnemonia, following a c-section, and the embolism was in the same area, could this nodule be from that?
Best answer:
Answer by Alex P
I only understood a quarter of those words.
Go back to them and see if that 4mm nodule is cancer and if it is there is a chance that it is cancer.

Question by : would should I do to minimize my chance of dying from lung cancer?
I smoked for 4 years in my 20s. I’ve quit and haven’t smoked for years. But the risk of lung cancer still scares me. I’m 36 now. I hear lung cancer is a deadly disease once you get it, but I heard it’s curable if discovered early, is that true?
What are my chances of getting it, and if I do get it, what do I need to do to make sure I discover it early? Getting screened every 6 month after a certain age?

If someone is on chemotherapy and having sex with someone with herpes. What is the chance of them catching it?
Question by Candy: If someone is on chemotherapy and having sex with someone with herpes. What is the chance of them catching it?
I know someone a male with genital herpes and chlamydia(well he claimed he got rid of the chlamydia). Anyways he is in a relationship with someone for over 3 months now and the female has brain cancer and is on chemotherapy. He says they use condoms but I know he doesn’t when they have oral sex. I also heard that chemotherapy weakens your immune system so how likely will she contract it. He says he didn’t tell her that he has it.
Best answer:
Answer by LINDSEY S
It’s possible but herpes is rarely passed to the mouth during oral sex. If he has a weakened immune system he could get more frequent break outs. If they use condoms and avoid intercourse while he has any signs or a break out and if he is taking antiviral medication regularly then she only has about 1 percent chance per year of contracting it.
If the chlamydia has been treated then he shouldn’t be able to pass it on.

Question by 8889: If one parent has a dominant allele that gives a 75% chance of develping a certain type of cancer between?
the ages of 35 and 65. What is the likelihood you have inherited the cancer allele? What is the percentage. One parent has the dominant allele and the other parent does not have a dominant allele.
Best answer:
Answer by Peter V
There isnt enough info to do this problem… it is a simple Punnet square, but you didnt tell us if the dominant allele is homozygous or heterozygous. the chances will be different if it is hetero vs. homozygous.
ALso, just to be a knit picker… generally dominant allele would be for “not cancer” and the recessive trait would be ” cancer developing”. Recessive= bad things generally speaking in Genetics.
So, let me know if 1 parent is HETERO or HOMOZYGOUS Dominant for cancer, and then Ill figure it out.
