Are there any clinical trials being done that could type and screen cancer samples to specific chemotherapies?
Question by Dks97: Are there any clinical trials being done that could type and screen cancer samples to specific chemotherapies?
Sort of like how blood is typed and screened. If a patient knew how their cells reacted to a specific regimen, it would save time going down a long list of chemotherapies. If a sample is taken and tested before chemo is scheduled to start, a patient could go right to that specific drug match and benefit. My mother has breast cancer and is on her 3rd drug combo. We keep going down a list of compatible drugs for her cancer type not knowing which will be a good long term match for her.

Dr. Edwin Silverman talks about COPDGene and importance of clinical research participation
In this video—presented by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health—NHLBI grantee Dr. Edwin Silverman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston talks about COPD Gene, which he runs with Dr. James Crapo of National Jewish Health in Denver, and about the importance of participation in clinical studies. COPD Gene is a study of more than 10000 volunteers across the country who are undergoing genetic assessment, state-of-the-art CAT scan imaging, breathing tests and other measurements in order to better understand why some people get COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and others don’t. The goal is to identify the genes that play a role in the development of COPD and to ultimately improve the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. “This research would not have been possible without the incredible support from the general population,” said Dr. Silverman. “If we hadn’t had enthusiastic support from our volunteers who gave up their own time to come in, get a CAT scan, go through an extensive array of tests with breathing tests and walk tests and a long list of questionnaires, if they hadn’t been willing to do that, we just couldn’t do the work. “So I think that people need to understand that medical research isn’t something that happens out there by other people. If they want new medical discoveries, they should really consider getting involved. They should consider being part of clinical trials, consider …

Young TIL Clinical Trial – Immunotherapy Program Milwaukee
VISIT WWW.THEIDEARAISER.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION Milwaukee is one of a few places in the world offering the Young TIL Clinical Trial. This treatment is providing amazing hope to patients suffering from melanoma, a form of cancer that kills thousands of people annually. Further, the research being done right here in Milwaukee holds exciting potential for other types of cancers. A patient suffering from stage four melanoma, who is otherwise fairly healthy but hasn’t responded to first level treatments including Interleukin 2, is assessed through a prescreening process to participate in the FDA cleared, Young TIL clinical research trial. In a nutshell, the Young TIL cell (or tumor infiltrating lymphocytes) are an army created from the patient’s own immune cells…those cells that can kill the cancer. this is a good treatment, it’s a new era, it’s a new world, it’s custom designed, it’s personalized, it’s your cells doing the job. And it may open the door in the same way that radiation therapy did and the same way chemotherapy did, and I’m convinced that this type of interesting and complex manipulation of the immune system is going to blow it open even more so.” — Dr. John Hanson Patient Testimonial “This is about a revolutionary treatment that can help cancer patients.” “It is an experiment, it is a trial, but guess what. It’s workin. And it’s workin incredibly well for patients like myself and others” — Jeff, Patient

Savannah Aulger will never have snapshots with her father on her first birthday, on Christmas or at a school event. The only picture she will ever have of them is the one as sweet as it is heartbreaking. Hooked up to an oxygen mask at the hospital, the man she would call dad cradled her in his arms for 45 minutes. He sobbed. He smiled. And there was no doubt that he loved her. “He would talk to my stomach when I was pregnant,” Diane Aulger said of her husband. “He was so excited for her.” The next day, Mark Aulger slipped into a coma. The Aulger family of The Colony, Texas, had a lot to rejoice about in the weeks before Savannah’s Jan. 18 birth, which was induced two weeks early so her father could hold her. A home movie on Christmas showed a pregnant Diane Aulger, 31, handing out gifts to their four children, the oldest of whom is 15. American College of Physicians: New Clinical Recommendations for Diagnosing and Treating COPD
The American College of Physicians (ACP), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and European Respiratory Society (ERS) today released a joint clinical practice guideline on diagnosing and treating stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP’s flagship journal. ACP convened the four organizations, which represent more than 170000 physicians from around the world, to develop the joint guideline. “This clinical practice guideline aims to help clinicians to diagnose and manage stable COPD, prevent and treat exacerbations, reduce hospitalizations and deaths, and improve the quality of life of patients with COPD,” said lead author Amir Qaseem, MD, FACP, PhD, Director of Clinical Policy, American College of Physicians. “It is important for patients with COPD to stop smoking and for physicians to help their patients to quit smoking.” COPD occurs predominantly in cigarette smokers. COPD symptoms include chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or significant activity limitation.
Lisa Lavange, biostatistics professor and Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center director, describes research involving the US Hispanic population and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Subependymal giant-cell astrocytoma (SEGA) results from mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, whose products are major regulatory proteins linked to the activation of the mTOR pathway. A recent phase II trial of everolimus in children and adults with SEGAs showed significant reduction in tumor volume in a majority of the patients with decreased occurrence of seizures. Notably, the drug was well tolerated even with prolonged treatment, suggesting that it may be an attractive alternative to surgical resection in selective cases. On the contrary, a phase II trial with temsirolimus in patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) did not show efficacy.
There has been also substantial interest towards the development of mTOR inhibitors for the treatment of sarcomas. Temsirolimus has failed to demonstrate meaningful activity as monotherapy in these tumors, as evidenced by a phase II trial in which PFS was only 2 months. Everolimus, on the contrary, may have synergistic activity with imatinib mesylate in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Phase I/II data of this combination in patients who progressed with imatinib mesylate alone showed a modest improvement in progression-free survival (PFS). A phase II trial with ridaforolimus in 216 patients with advanced sarcoma was carried out. Patients enrolled included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma and other soft tissue sarcomas. In several cases stable disease was attained, with amedian survival of 40 weeks, and outcomes were similar between the four histologic subtypes.
Besides brain tumors and sarcomas, mTOR inhibition has been studied in various other solid tumors, including gastrointestinal, prostate, and head and neck cancers. The combination of bevacizumab and everolimus exhibited clinical activity in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, despite previous progression on a bevacizumab-based regimen. There is also preliminary evidence from a study in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma suggesting that everolimus may be moderately active in stabilizing disease progression. Other trials combining mTOR inhibitors with sorafenib or bevacizumab in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are ongoing. The combination of bicalutamide and everolimus appears to have promising antitumor activity and an acceptable toxicity profile in castrate-resistant prostate cancer, whereas various trials with rapalogs are being conducted for either the treatment of advanced prostate cancer or in the neo-adjuvant setting.
