If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation?
Question by : If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation?
If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation? My friend said that he has colon cancer not sure if i believe him. He said 4 weeks ago he had surgery. But then he mentioned he will have to have physical therapy. I think his physical therapy was due to his back. He said the doctors never told him about how long he has to live. Why would someone need physical therapy after a colon operation.
Best answer:
Answer by N
In some cases surgery is all that is necessary. In more advanced stages additional treatment, like chemo, may be necessary.
If he was bedbound for more than a week he may have become weak and needed some therapy to help him get back on his feet and regain his strength.

Does anyone know anything I can do for Colon Cancer Fundraising?
Question by smashing126: Does anyone know anything I can do for Colon Cancer Fundraising?
My dad was diagnosed a couple of months ago with Stage 4 colon cancer. I have been reading everything I can on it, but one of the things this oh-so-preventable-cancer is missing is the type of fundraising I only seem to find for breast cancer. I want to do everything I can to do my part to raise awareness and raise money if I can. Please let me know if you know how to do so.
Anything local to the PA, NJ, DE, MD aread would be even better!
Best answer:
Answer by Doctor J
Your desire to help with this important health issue is wonderful. You may want to start by contacting your local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS). You should find them in the phone book.
The ACS may have fund-raising programs you can assist with. You may also be able to work with them to start a special program specifically for colon cancer if they do not already have one.
There are plenty of ways to raise funds for cancer awareness. Here are a few ideas:
1) a walk for colon cancer (walkers get friends and family to ‘sponsor’ their walk with a donation for each mile the person walks)
2) a raffle/drawing (donated artwork, cruise or vacation tickets, a 50/50 drawing, etc.)
3) sell tee-shirts, mugs, hats, etc. with a logo about supporting colon cancer awareness
4) a community auction – get local people and businesses to donate items to the auction
5) sell ribbons, pins, etc. to show support for colon cancer awareness.
Best wishes and good luck.

You need to see a Gastroenterologist. These Dr’s are the best when it comes to these problems. That’s their job. They will more than likely suggest a colonoscopy. Your symptoms could be anything from a virus, to irritable bowel syndrome or even something you ate but we here cannot give you a diagnosis. I hope you feel better. God bless

Stage IV colon cancer odds?
Question by Maria: Stage IV colon cancer odds?
For anyone who knows more about this, please help me out!
My dad was diagnosed with cancer in Fall of 2008. At the time it was only in his colon. He went through chemo & radiation at the time and had surgery in the spring. A while after that, they found cancer in his liver also. They did surgery to remove the cancerous spots and ended up cutting out half his liver. Going through chemo and radiation in between all of these times, a while later they found cancer spots in his lungs also. They did a surgery to remove the spots (this was last year, in the summer of 2010). Things seemed to be going well for the past year with repeated scans. In December 2011 (just under 2 months ago) They found another possible spot in his lungs and he is back on chemo. For anyone with experience or knows anything about this, what are my dad’s chances? Thanks for any info

Q&A: What could i have done to my dog when he had colon cancer.?
Question by Austin M: What could i have done to my dog when he had colon cancer.?
-My dog Sable has just recently passed away of colon cancer. We noticed that he started to swell and bleed from his butt. The cancer was so aggresive and rapid that it had stopped him from using any type of restroom in 4 days. It went from the size of a dime to the size of the tubes in his colon. We love sable very much and I was just wondering, what could’ve been some symptoms and how could we of caught it?

Anything new in the U.S or elsewhere for cancer that started in the colon; moving to lungs then else where???
Question by 1magicmom: Anything new in the U.S or elsewhere for cancer that started in the colon; moving to lungs then else where???
A very good friend of mine was diagnoised with colon cancer, it went into remiss, then showed up as lung cancer, this past May, it moved to the vagina and tho she told doctors she needed to see them; they put her off and now it has a good foot hold. She was supposed to get help from a large local hospital, but because it moved to a new place they will not see her now. Anyone know of any help for her? She has a wonderfull husband and sons. I am burning a trail to God with prayers for her as well as her family. I am not sure if her husband will survive long without her; and her sons as well. They are such a loving family and my heart aches for all of them. Please if anyone has any information that may help her please let us know. People who are this loving shouldn’t have to be pulled apart like this.

I don’t know much about this topic so I can’t help, but I do want to say that not everyone out “here” is as cold as the one person who responded to your post. That is not only rude, it’s completely uncalled for and heartless. I hope that somehow you all will be able to get your friend the help she needs and that she somehow beats the odds. Bless you all.

Q&A: Colon and Liver cancer with Hepatitis B–are there alternative medical treatments?
Question by Roo: Colon and Liver cancer with Hepatitis B–are there alternative medical treatments?
Best answer:
Answer by Char
For something as complex as cancer I’d find an alternative doctor. Someone certified in Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine would be my recommendation. You will most likely be given diet changes to make, and herbal or physical (acupuncture etc.) treatments. Diet changes shouldn’t interact with any other therapies. Herbal supplements can sometimes be combined with traditional methods-just make sure your doctor knows you’re doing that.

Q&A: how many fruits per day i should eat to prevent colon cancer or polyps?
Question by cheskin / and: how many fruits per day i should eat to prevent colon cancer or polyps?
i dont feed much on veggies cos i dont have time to cook. so i try to substitute it with fruits. how much fruits i need per day to prevent the horrible death of having colon cancer which leads bowel interuption and consequently vomitting fecal matter?
i eat 2 bananas per day but im not sure it has enough fibre in it. now i added 1 piece of apple to my daily diet. is that enough?
Best answer:
Answer by Verite R
I have been researching diet for cancer patients (see more on www.after-cancer.com) and you need to eat more fruit and veg.
Doctors recommend AT LEAST five portions a day – veg. are better, but fruit is good. Why not snack on carrots sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes etc?
But no diet can prevent cancer – all it can do is make you healthier so that if cancer comes, you are better able to recover. There is a lot of research that says that fruit and veg might prevent colon cancer, but so far no-one has come up with a definitive statement.

What happens during colon cancer surgery?
Question by forzamaster21408: What happens during colon cancer surgery?
Where do they make the insision? how long is hospitalization for? any more info
thanks alot trying to help my best friend
Best answer:
Answer by heckenhocker
Incision will depend on the location of the cancer (the colon is pretty long) and the method of surgery – it can be “open” or “laproscopic”.
A laproscopic surgery will have only a few relatively small cuts in the lower tummy, and recovery will be up to a week if there are no complications.
An open surgery will cut from below the navel for about 6-8 inches, and will take up to 2 weeks in hospital.
There are no straight answers here – everyone’s recovery time is different. To be allowed out, you have to be able to eat, drink, have a bowel movement (either regular or to the stoma bag), pass gas, pass water (or manage your catheter), get out of bed and sit in a chair. These are basic ways to assess that the body is recovering.
Recovery time is likely to be longer if your friend has already had chemo or has been noticeably ill for a while before the cancer was found – s/he’ll already be worn down a bit by that. My husband had no symptoms until 2 weeks before his surgery, and took 10 days to get out of hospital after open surgery.
Be prepared when you visit for the first time post surgery, especially if it’s open surgery. This is a big operation and your friend may well look dreadful after – NG tube, catheter, wound drain, PCA IV, fluids IV, oxygen mask. That all looks really scary….but it’s actually normal post surgery. Practice a blank face and a big smile – s/he doesn’t need to know how awful s/he looks…and s/he’ll lose some of the gadgets in a few days.
