We are looking to buy a house we love but feel its too expensive (and over our budget) and trying to knock price down.
There is a previously damp wall and 1 still damp alcove ceiling. Also there is an asbestos garage roof. The boiler is also over 30 years old!
Sorry if this is a little long winded but does anyone know approx costs of damp survey, asbestos survey and new gas boiler installation? Any help would be fab thanks

You really should get some estimates from qualified local contractors. This is a great forum, but wholly inadequate to provide answers to these questions. For example, replacing the boiler could cost anywhere from $ 3,500 or so to several times that – depends on a bunch of factors. The same with the other areas of concern.
Call some local contractors and hire them to do an evaluation. Ask them if their fee will be refundable if you ultimately retain them to do the job.

I’ve been thinking of maybe moving into my grandmothers house now that she has passed away. No one has lived in the house since December of 2007 and it has kind of gone down hill since. In the dining room between the kitchen and the den, the ceiling, which is sheetrock that has the circular..or flower design don’t remember what you call it is messed up in the corner. I guess it has leaked where it rained sometime and there is black mold growing in that spot where it leaked. I know the black mold is dangerous. Does that mean I need to redo the whole ceiling or just that one spot? I know the black mold showed up sometime in 2009. Also, in one of the bedrooms she had the tile ceiling and part of it is trying to fall in where it has leaked and the same problem in the den in one area. So with that do I replace all the tiles or just the ones trying to fall in? Or should I change it out to sheetrock? One issue is the den ceiling has these dark brown wooded things going across the top of the ceiling. Not sure what you would call it. Anyways..I didn’t realize how much work was involved until I went yesterday. The ceilings wasn’t like that til recently because no one has lived there in a while. Also, it needs a new roof because the shingles are old. I was told those shingles are dangerous ones consisting of abestos because my fiance said it looked like some from way back that they don’t use anymore. It’s a very nice roomy house, but my grandmother just never really changed it up that much. I just need some opinions on what I need to do and some estimates.

Here is what you do
Call three roofing companies for an estimate ….you did not give any measurements so I cannot give you an estimate on the roof …..plus it sounds like some of your deck {roof deck} will need replacement.
While you are gathering estimates, you can start removing the bad rock areas to see how much needs replacement. You won’t be able to tell until you tear into it and see how much mold and other damage is there.
You don’t want to do anything until the roof is repaired at which point you can decide if you want to do it or hire someone

This clip shows a rushed photovoltaic (PV) system erected on a barn with an old asbestos roof. Last year the UK government announced that PV systems up to 50kW would attract a feed in tariff (FiT) of 32.9 pence per kW/hour as long as the system was up before the 31st March 2012. The government then changed the goal posts to say that a system would have to up before 12th December 2011 to get that tariff over the full length of the 25 year scheme. If systems were not up before 12th December 2011, those systems would only get a FiT of 15.1 pence after the 31st March 2012. Confused? The upshot is that farmers whom had committed to buying panels suddenly had a short time to get those panels up resulting in a system like the one shown in this clip, potentially compromising the efficiency of the system and potentially the safety of farmers erecting them. No one was hurt in the making of this video!! Shocking bad planning by the UK government and a huge lack of commitment to renewable energy. Shame on you!

Congratulations, you found proof of a theme that is similar in both Universal Health Care and Privatized Health Care.
That theme is trying to save money. For private, it means increasing profits. For UHC, it means being able to do more with tax payers money.
But that’s not all, because your source article indicates that the UHC has a mechanism in place where their decisions can be appealed. Can you appeal a treatment choice with your HMO? I didn’t think so.
Of course, a wealthy person in either system could choose to pay for this treatment out of pocket, so once again, your article proves absolutely nothing other than that you are stretching.

Call your vet and ask them, but I would assume it would depend on (1) breed of dog, (2) type of cancer, and (3) how advanced it is. My guess would be $ 5k maybe up to $ 10k, but call them and ask them for a range.

We had a pinhole leak above our gypsum plaster ceiling (house was built in 1949 and this may be the original ceiling material). Thankfully the leak was facing downwards, so the wood a few inches above the leak is largely dry and undamaged.
Much of the gypsum plaster was soaked. The ceiling had to be opened about 4′ x 3′ in one area to find the leak and another hole was made about 5′ away to relieve additional leaking. In addition the track lighting fixture bent the center of the kitchen ceiling, so that 5′ strip with the lights (which connects the areas with the holes) will likely need to be replaced/patched too; we could hear the sizzling of water in the lights and realized quickly there was water in them and shut them off.
An adjuster is coming tomorrow to look at the damage. The plumbing repair was made yesterday and isn’t covered, but the kitchen ceiling repair would be if it exceeds the deductible. It’s a small galley kitchen, but we live in a metropolitan area (near Washington, DC) where house repairs are expensive. Any general thoughts on how to estimate the cost are appreciated.
Also, would there be lead and/or asbestos in the ceiling? I assume lead paint is likely due to the house’s age. If some sort of expert would need to come in because of potential asbestos issues, I assume the cost would increase, but I know very little about any of this. Heck, I was just happy to find the main water valve and break open the ceiling to find the leak and stop any further damage.

You can replace the plaster if you want to be a purist, but sheetrock is the way to go for price, time and convenience. Asbestos would be found in insulation, not the plaster itself. Lead wouldn’t be a danger unless the painted surface was reduced to breathable dust.
