What is the cause of my dad’s ascites?
Question by mistlerj: What is the cause of my dad’s ascites?
My dad had 1/4 of his left lung removed 2 weeks ago due to stage 1 lung cancer. 9 days after his surgery he returned to the hospital with ascites. He has had a number of test and cat scans which all come out negative. His enzymes are normal and the doctor said that his liver does not look like cirrhosis. He says it could possibly be liver cancer, but obviously just his opinion because he hasn’t had a liver biopsy. He had a PET scan a month ago and the scan showed that the cancer was only in his lung. He had some lymph nodes biopsied before surgery, some in his chest area and some by his lung. Those results came back negative for cancer. He is also being treated for C-diff for the past 2 weeks and that is improving.
Any thoughts on what he could have and is it possible to be liver cancer?

My friend’s mom had liver cancer and had to have peritoneal fluid drained-off when necessary.
I hope and pray your father doesn’t have it…maybe it is early heart failure? Drugs can help his heart beat more efficiently…how are his kidneys?

Cancer runs heavily on my dad’s side of the family?
Question by Mercury Pearl: Cancer runs heavily on my dad’s side of the family?
I love my dad’s side of the family, but it is also bitter-sweet because I take after his side, physically, which means I might get cancer. My mom’s side is big-boned, pale skin. My dad’s side is small-boned, olive/tan skin. I look like everyone on my dad’s side of the family – which scares me a little bit when it comes to the different types of cancers that run on that side of the family.
Cancer history on my dad’s side:
My grandma had a tumor in her hip area.
My grandpa died of lung cancer.
My uncle recently died of lung cancer.
My aunt died of a heart tumor (but also had tumors elsewhere in her body).
I’m sure there are other people on my dad’s side who have died of other cancers, but I don’t know the family history that well considering a lot of the people on that side have unfortunately passed away because most of them are quite old. (My dad had me late in his life).
Since I take after him, what are my chances of getting cancer?
By the way, I have a fragile immune system. I’m always getting sick.

Im not sure about the exact answer to this question, but if cancer cells are part of a gene in our body, from AP Biology, i can tell you that the chance of getting the cancer cells in your genes are not a huge possibility. It does not matter if you inherited other genes from your dad’s side, you still have a 50 50 chance of inheriting such genes. I hope this info helps.
I don’t think you should worry too much about it

spot on my dad’s lung, please help?
Question by : spot on my dad’s lung, please help?
i am incredibly worried right now. about a month ago my dad coughed up blood and went to the hospital, note he’s been smoking for about the past 10-12 years. they couldn’t really tell what was wrong with the x-ray so sent him to a lung doctor where he’s gotten blood work done and were waiting for all those other results. according to my dad they did find a spot on his lung…. i really…really..hope it isn’t cancer, and basically my question is is there a chance it could be something else besides cancer and if so what? please help i’m really worried right now.
oh and i don’t know if he was just saying this to make us feel better but he said that the doctor did say it MAY just be an infection but i want to be sure

It could be lots of other things. The only way to get a definitive diagnosis is additional testing…like a bronchoscopy or a needle or open biopsy.
Try not to worry until your Dads doctor finishes his testing. One thing you can do, is encourage your Dad to STOP SMOKING!!!

Me n ma crying over dad’s death (NOT for faint of heart)
I dunno why im even posting this, but i guess im reaching out to all you ciggarette smokers. The sounds and sights in this video are real grief and lotsa pain, just to warn you. Mom is wailing in the background while im sharing my thoughts on lung cancer and how horrible of a death it is. My father passed away this morning because he couldnt put down the smokes. He was only 53 years old, still young and vivacious at heart. The cancer moved into his bones and brain and he ended up with 2 tumors bleeding in his brain, then one in his lung cutting off his trachea(wind pipe), which is probably what helped kill him. You DONT wanna watch any loved ones suffer through this death, and you damn sure dont wanna be the one to die like this. PLEASE, quit smoking those cancerous death sticks NOW! 1888UCANNOW = free stop smoking aids/help Thats how i quit, thanks to the american cancer society providing me the gum/lozenges. I cant put my kids through this(when i have any), i wanna live to be 80 @ least. Watching my daddy die has convinced me never to pick up a cig again… maybe seeing our grief will help convince you or some1 you love to do the same. If sharing this saves even one person’s life by helping them stop smoking, it’ll be worth the posting. uniqueflgirl’s webcam recorded Video – October 23, 2009, 12:51 PM

Q&A: My dad’s dying. Why am I not mad at god at all?
Question by : My dad’s dying. Why am I not mad at god at all?
No more than fifteen minutes ago, my dad came home from the Hospital. He went into the emergency room over a week ago because his left arm was hurting so much.
He stayed in the hospital to get his arm treated. They performed surgery on it, putting a metal rod in that arm so the bone would heal better, with less pain, and so it would be harder to break again.
He just walked in the door, and I was so happy to see him. I gave him a very light hug so as not to hurt his arm, and followed him into his room to hear updates and see how he was doing.
He has lung cancer, and the beginnings of bone cancer. The bone that broke was because that was a ‘hot spot’ for the bone cancer. Same for the top of his head, and a spot on his back. He hasn’t smoked for 11 days, and is on the patch, and will never smoke again. The doctors think they caught it early enough to treat both cancers.
But even knowing this, I can’t stop crying.
And feeling this, I can’t help but wonder…
Is this the part where people curse God? Where they say, “Why did he let this happen”? Where they swear and lose their faith, and where they experience unspeakable anger they somehow can’t manage?
Why am I not angry at God at all?
I’m not an Athiest. I’m Christian. Just, I’ve seen good Christian people break down and swear God off forever over stuff like this.

Q&A: Can my dads lung cancer go away..?
Question by ` ayesian xo.: Can my dads lung cancer go away..?
3 months ago we found out about my dads lung cancer. As day passed, the cancer got worser and worser.. I think 2 weeks before it was getting a little better, but this week it just seemed like it went back downhill .. I don’t see my dad anymore because he lives with my uncle and his wife, and we only get to see him 3 times a week when before we used to see him everyday because he was the one that was taking care of me and my brother from the age 4 to 15(right now) and because of this i now live with me mom … it’s so hard not seeing my dads face everyday, and talking on the phone with him became impossible because he’s always sleeping or coughing… My dad has passed the 3rd stage and he completely changed.. Before he was a handsome, hard working man who did everything for his children .. Like cook, buy them things, help them with their homework, kiss them goodnight.. Now, he’s lost all of his hair, can’t work anymore, can’t walk anymore because the cancer got to his legs, can’t talk anymore because whenever he did he would cough, can’t eat anymore, he became so pale, he’s skinnier then i am .. He can’t do anything without our help.. It kills me whenever I think about it, and I cry every night.. Today before leaving from my uncles house, I gave my dad a big hug (he was sleeping on the couch, watching the fish..) and i noticed he was holding his tears.. I wasn’t hallucinating, I really saw his facial expression.. Anyway, sorry for the long story.. I just wanted to get all of this off my back because I can’t talk about it to anyone.. No one understands me.. And when I try to talk about it to someone, they always tell me he’s going to get better BUT HE’S NOT !! He’s gonna die soon, even the doctor told us he’s got less than a year to live.. Imagine a daughter like me who couldn’t do anything without her father, has to now live without seeing him anymore….And to top it off, he smokes 5 times a day…Anyway, someone please answer my question.. Can my dads lung cancer be cured forever..? or is it going to live on until he dies..? Please be honest.

Chances are very slim. Just be with him as much as you can. Just being there will be important to him as well as you. Be strong and it is alright to cry.

my dads lung cancer diagnosis?!?
Question by Janelle G: my dads lung cancer diagnosis?!?
it was discovered that my dad had a cancerous mass blocking an artery that made his face swell up. his doctors told him that he had a good chance of recovery and that the cancer was in its early stages. in august of this year the doctors had told him that he wouldnt need as heavy chemotherapy. so my dad skipped a month of treatment. today his doctors supposedly told him that if he dosent quit smoking his survival would be six months to a year. im soo scared for him! the doctors that put in place his mediport screwed it up and he had a blood clot in his chest. should he go see a second opinion?

How do I get the images of my dad’s death out of my mind?
Question by toots1980: How do I get the images of my dad’s death out of my mind?
My dad had lung cancer that had spread throughout his body. He was in the hospital the last 2 weeks. On Friday we were told that it was the end. I spent the entire weekend with him at the hospital. It was extremely sad and scary watching him die. He was medicated so I don’t know how much pain he was in but it looked bad. The last 10 minutes of his life were extremely frightening for me. I was so glad that I could be there for his in his last days. But now all I can think about is how he looked and acted in his last days and hours. It is breaking my heart. What can I do to get those images out of my mind so that I can move to a different stage of my grieving?
There seemed to be moments that he knew we were there but not many. I don’t know for sure what he knew or thought what was going on.
