Can cystic fibrosis damage the brain during embryotic development?
Question by Lulu: Can cystic fibrosis damage the brain during embryotic development?
I know that Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic disease of the lungs and digestive system that causes the body to produce mucus. . . But, can cystic fibrosis damage the brain during embryotic development? I thought it could because the mucus build-up could block oxygen from reaching the brain, causing damage and poor development. . .

New Development in Cancer Research from Xenotide Biotech

(Who We Are) Xenotide is a 6 year old Biotechnology Company that has discovered and patented new classes of molecules for the diagnoses and treatment of cancers and age related diseases. (Problem) Despite great success in the war on cancer over the last 40 years, cancer remains one of the most feared diagnoses. Chemotherapy, though often effective, is associated with occasional disabling or even life-threatening side effects due to unintended collateral damage of normal tissue. The major unmet needs for cancer patients are: 1. Cancer drugs that are safer for the body 2. Cheaper and better imaging for all cancers 3. The need for an agent that can be used for both imaging and treatment (Solution) Xenotide has two commercial opportunities in the field of cancer research; one for the diagnoses of cancers and the other for the treatment of cancers using the same small molecules for both. With this discovery of a new class of molecules, Xenotide has developed methods for targeting cancer therapy specifically to tumors. These are actual photos of Lung cancer cells and Prostate cancer cells being attacked by Xenotide’s nanoparticles shown in green florescence, while there is little to no effect on the normal cells. This is a close up picture of the lung cancer cells showing that Xenotide’s nanoparticles not only have attached to the surface of the cancer cell, but have also been internalized. (Commercial Opportunity ) Although Xenotide has other commercial opportunities, we will …

Gene is Linked to Lung Cancer Development in Never Smokers
A five-center collaborative study that scanned the genomes of thousands of “never smokers” diagnosed with lung cancer as well as healthy never smokers has found a gene they say could be responsible for a significant number of those cancers. In the March 22 on line issue of Lancet Oncology, the researchers reported that about 30 percent of patients who never smoked and who developed lung cancer had the same uncommon variant, or allele, residing in a gene known as GPC5. The research was co-led by scientists at the Mayo Clinic campus in Minnesota, Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Researchers found in laboratory studies that this allele leads to greatly reduced GPC5 expression, compared to normal lung tissue. The finding suggests that the gene has an important tumor suppressor-like function and that insufficient function can promote lung cancer development. “This is the first gene that has been found that is specifically associated with lung cancer in people who have never smoked,” says the study’s lead investigator, Ping Yang, MD, Ph.D., Mayo Clinic genetic epidemiologist. “What’s more, our findings suggest GPC5 may be a critical gene in lung cancer development and genetic variations of this gene may significantly contribute to increased risk of lung cancer,” she says. “This is very exciting.” In this video, Dr. Yang discusses the study and it’s findings. Food Additives Linked to Development of Lung Cancer
Food Additives Linked to Development of Lung Cancer
Article by Katie Kelley
Copyright (c) 2009 Katie Kelley
Researchers have recently discovered a startling link to the development of lung cancer as well as an increased progression of the cancer through the consumption of food additives and phosphates often found in inorganic foods. The research stems from a study conducted by the Seoul National University and was published in the January issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Science Daily reported that the study, which used a mouse model, found an “increased intake of inorganic phosphates stimulates lung cancer development in mice, and suggests that dietary regulation of inorganic phosphates may be critical for lung cancer treatment as well as prevention.”
A medical dictionary describes inorganic phosphates as any variety of salt or ester of phosphoric acid. Inorganic phosphates can be found in a number of processed foods including the following:
* cheeses
* meats
* beverages
* bakery products
Causes of Lung Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) lung cancer “forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages” and there are two main types of lung cancer known as “small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, which are diagnosed based on how the cells look under a microscope.”
Approximately 215,020 new cases of both types of lung cancer were reported in 2008. During this same year, more than 161,000 individuals perished because of the disease, according to the NCI.
There are several known risk factors associated with the development of several different variations of cancer including the following as reported by the Mayo Clinic:
* smoking
* the sex of an individual
* exposure to secondhand smoke
* inhalation of radon gas and other chemicals
* family history of the condition
* alcohol consumption/abuse
Additionally, the Mayo Clinic reports several cancer symptoms that a potential victim of the condition may need to watch for in order to properly diagnose their disease. Signs and symptoms include:
* hoarseness
* wheezing
* chest pain
* coughing up blood
* development of a cough that does not fade
* development of a chronic cough, change in cough
Rare Lung Cancer Development: Mesothelioma
A condition known as mesothelioma cancer is a rare and extremely debilitating form of the condition. The cancer is considered rare, although more individuals are being diagnosed with the condition, which is considered fatal among victims. Mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust and fibers, which often derived from working in mines, shipyards and construction fields.
Asbestos is a mineral derived from vermiculite, which was heavily mined during the late 19th and early 20th centuries until regulatory bodies deemed extensive exposure to the mineral unsafe. Unfortunately, the damage had already occurred among thousands of Americans as well as those around the world.
Upon even the slightest bit of asbestos exposure causes the commencement of cancerous cells on the lining of the mesothelium within the lungs and the lining of the peritoneum within the internal organs. Unfortunately, signs and symptoms of the condition remain dormant for several years and up to four decades.
Unfortunately, even after symptoms of the condition are revealed, they are often misdiagnosed as mesothelioma appears similar to other conditions. It may be necessary for an individual to locate an environmental toxin attorney to better assess the need for a mesothelioma lawsuit.
