Why Does Pouring Millions of Dollars into Cancer Research Often Do Nothing at All?

.Unfortunately, the basic assumption is wrong. The money “poured” into cancer research has markedly increased cancer survival. You have to realize that up until the mid-1940s there were no treatments for cancer and no one survived. Here’s whats happened in the past 50 years to childhood cancer survival (overall childhood survival is 82%; stjude.org) In adults its a little grimmer, but overall survival went from 50% in 1975 to 68% in 2006 (cancer.org). Overall, both the incidence and death rates for cancer are decreasing. So, how is this doing nothing at all? Incidence is down; death rate is down; survival is up. This didn’t just happen; it came from 50 years of a lot of people doing a lot of research. Decreased incidence is perhaps the hardest to argue and relate to research, but clearly research on prevention, carcinogens and cancer causes (smoking for example) played a role. It’s also helpful to realize a couple of things about research. The first is that it’s very often unsuccessful. The experiment was set up; the clinical trial was run; it didn’t work. but still costs a lot of money. Was that research or trial in vain? Hardly. Everything provides part of the answer, no matter how small. Some times it’s just a matter of learning “what not to do” so you can do it better next time. Candidates are raising in excess of two million dollars a day to fund their campaigns but we can’t seem to do the same to fund cancer research or poverty. I probably know the answer but still curious what people have to say about this.

And still have the highest cancer statistics every year. What I mean is that the research is costing millions of dollars and the cost of medicines are on the rise every year and the nation gets sicker and sicker. What’s going on ?

Cancer is over 200 types and subtypes of disease with four stages of each cancer. None of the cancers respond in the same manner to treatment. You cannot use the research for breast cancer to treat bone cancer. Each cancer needs its own research, its own protocol, its own chemotherapy. Which means it needs its own funding, its own research facility, its own Clinical Trial, its own researcher or oncologist experts, and patients willing and well enough to undergo research and trials.

There have been enormous strides made. You just are not aware of it because you are not involved in the Cancer world. The biggest problem at the moment is metastatic cancer . . which is advanced cancer that has spread from the original site. There are few treatment options available for this type of late cancer and there are even fewer options for the ‘orphan’ or ‘rare cancers’ that no one has ever heard about. Most research funding goes towards the more common cancers such as breast, lung, and colon cancer. The expensive drugs are caused from trying to spread the cost equally across all cancer types . . to fund the cancer research for rare cancers.

Actually cancer in the US has not been rising, it has been going down. The results of years of research means that there are more and more survivors of cancer. All cancer types, stages, and grades of tumor now have survivors where as just a few years ago they did not.

At the moment there is treatment for cancer that will lead to individual cures . . but there is no magic bullet that will cure all cancer types.

Have you seen the CSI-type shows where the crime scene detective puts on some funky goggles and shines an eerie blue light over the scene, looking for clues? They are using an alternative light source to reveal details that are difficult to detect under normal white light. The same kind of technology is behind today’s oral cancer detection systems. These new dental practice management tools and technologies help us treat our patients better.Detection toolsThere are two major oral cancer detection systems currently available. ViziLite Plus from Zila Pharmaceuticals and VELscope from LED Dental. These systems appear similar in that they both use a blue light and filters; however, they employ quite different science.ViziLite Plus is a disposable chemical light source packaged in a wand. When the chemicals are mixed the wand gives off a specific blue light that is used to illuminate the oral tissues. Certain changes in the mucosa are easier to detect with this alternative light source.VELscope produces a specific blue light as well. However, the tissues are then viewed through the VELscope hand-piece, which filters out most of the ambient reflected light. What the user sees through the hand-piece is the natural fluorescence of the mucosal tissue.Dysplasia (even early dysplasia) produces chemical changes at the cellular level in both the epithelium and the underlying connective tissue, which results in decreased fluorescence.The ViziLite Plus system includes a tissue stain called TBlue, which, when applied to lesions discovered with the alternative light source, allows for visualization of the lesion with normal white light.Just the first stepNeither system will actually diagnose oral cancer. The only true diagnostic protocol remains a biopsy. What these instruments do is enhance the routine visual and manual head and neck exam. They give the practitioner the ability to visualize tissue changes that often are not apparent with normal unfiltered white light.”VELscope is not a magic cancer stick,” said Dr. David Morgan, the Chief Science Officer of LED Dental. “It does not replace the traditional head, neck and oral soft-tissue exam.”Buying in to detectionIn addition to different science, these companies employ different delivery and pricing methods.ViziLite Plus is a disposable wand combined with single dose of a mouth rinse and swabs of TBlue. The average cost is .50 per use. The low unit cost makes it easy to get started with a small investment.VELscope is sold as an instrument consisting of a base and attached hand-piece. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is ,995.00. The relatively high start up cost can pose a barrier to entry. On the other hand, the ongoing expense of the disposable ViziLite kits adds up quickly. The math is easy: ,995 / .50 = 378.If you saw eight hygiene patients a day, four days a week and half of them needed an oral cancer exam, that would be 16 a week. You would exceed 378 exams in less than six months.A revised protocolThere is a tendency to think, “The exam I have been doing up to now has been good enough. I will only need to use an enhanced protocol on high-risk patients or those over 40.”That approach is flawed. Anyone who receives a routine head and neck exam as a new patient or recall patient is a candidate for an enhanced examination. After all, it is the routine patient with no obvious risk factors who is most likely to be missed. The protocol most often recommended is for all patients 18 and older to receive a head and neck soft-tissue exam at least once a year.This may help you catch other oral lesions not found in high-risk cancer patients alone, including Candida, HPV and even HIV.Most patients are probably not aware they are receiving a head and neck cancer exam as part of a routine examination. Introducing this technology to patients is a great way to let them know you are providing the service, helping differentiate your office from everyone else.Detecting the profitsThere are about 4,000 dentists using VELscope and 12,000 ViziLite users. Together, that is less than 2% of practicing dentists. Joining that minority can be beneficial because patients who believe you are providing advanced care are more likely to stay and to refer others.Sometimes the justification for adapting a new diagnostic technology is that it is the right thing to do. In this case, it is not only the right thing to do-early detection of oral cancer can literally save a life-it also can be profitable. When you use one of these systems you are providing a service that is different, so you can justify a different fee. Some users do not have a separate fee but most charge between and for the enhanced exam.The math to justify a return on investment for either system is simple. If you have an average patient base of 2,500 people and you do an enhanced examination on half of them once a year at that is an additional income of ,000.If you subtract the cost of the ,995 VELscope, your gross profit is ,005.If you use ViziLite Plus, the exam kits will cost you .50 each, and 1,250 x .50 = ,125. If you subtract the cost of the ViziLite from the extra ,000, your gross profit is ,875.Beyond the basicsDentists can combine examination findings with other technology to further enhance diagnosis. For example, it is possible to attach a camera to the VELscope hand-piece and take high-quality digital photos of the tissue. These images can become part of the electronic patient record and be used to observe changes over time.As more data is collected and more experience developed with these protocols, dentists will be able to send the digital photos (both enhanced and normal) to a specialist for a preliminary evaluation that could save patients time and money.Remember, high-tech dentistry is not just about computers. New diagnostic techniques continue to help us treat our patients better. The future is coming and it will be amazing!

I do get help taking care of them but I still have her car payment along with mines and also my rent all to myself. She passd away last year and I am running out of money fast. I have a good job and my kids need me. So how is it possible for me to get any financial help may be from a charity or something. Thanks.

Samira Tawfiq Said Balousha, 36, married with nine children, is a homemaker and a resident of Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Her testimony was given to B’Tselem’s Muhammad Sabah by telephone on 30 December 2008:

My husband and I lived with our children in a three-room asbestos house in Jabaliya refugee camp. The house is next to Imad Aqel Mosque. We had nine children: Tahrir, 17, Iman, 16, Ikram, 14, Samar, 12, Samah, 10, Dunia, 7, Juhar, 4, Muhammad who’s a year and a half and Bara, who’s two weeks old.

Last Saturday [27 December], after the Israeli bombing began and after pieces of asbestos fell from our house because of the bombing of the district-government building, my husband and I took the children and went to my father’s house. We stayed there for one day and then returned home and continued our normal life — I did house work and the girls prepared for their mid-year tests that were to take place during the week.

On Monday [29 December], around 11:50pm, I woke up and heard my husband calling to me: “Samira, Samira, they shelled the mosque, get up and see, and recite the Shahada [Prayer of the dying].” It was dark, and I couldn’t see anything. I recited the Shahada. I felt something heavy choking me and pressing on my body. I was buried under a concrete clock, stones, and sand, and barely managed to move. I succeeded in freeing my hand and pushed aside the things that had fallen on me. I got up and went to look for my children.

I found Bara, my two-week-old daughter. She was alive, even though her bed was buried under the ruins. I saw my husband getting out of the ruins, and I handed Bara to him.

I then went to look for my son Muhammad, who was sleeping next to me. At first, I didn’t see him because of the rubble, but I found him alive under the ruins. I managed to free him, and I gave him to one of the people who came to help clear away the rubble.

In the meantime, I continued to look for my daughters. Their bedroom was covered with blocks of concrete and stones and sand. Other people helped me look for them. I was very weak because I had been injured in the head, and I was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital.

At the hospital, I learned that five of my daughters — Tahrir, Ikram, Samar, Dunia, and Juhar — had been killed, and three were wounded. Muhammad was injured all over his body, mostly in the face.

Israel bombed the mosque next to our house without warning and without thinking about the people who live next to it. Lots of houses in the area were damaged in the blast.

For the last 60 years the Palestinian Refugees are living in a United Nation Refugee Camps waiting for UN to implement the UN Security Council resolutions. For the last 60 years Israel conducts collective punishment and state terror against the Palestinian Refugees. That is not making a fake news.
Occupying other people by force is losing policy in the past and now and has no future.

These people are intentionally pushing wads of mercury into your teeth, and have for 100 years. I guess the hook-nosed parasite lawyers would rather sue corporations than dentists? Why? There’s a lot of money in their collective pockets to be extracted!!! CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST HATEFUL DENTISTS WHO POISON YOUR TEETH!!! WHY NOT??

They don’t use Mercury anymore.

If they are, they’re doing it more expensively and more dangerously than they certainly need to.

There’s also not much a case there. You’d have to sue every dentist every where, their teachers, the researchers who deemed it safe and many of these people are DEAD.

A lawyer can’t build a case on something that old. It’s not worth the time and effort involved.
