Q&A: Is it normal for me to break down everynight?
Question by : Is it normal for me to break down everynight?
My grandma (and when I say grandma, I don’t want you to picture a little old lady she was only 56. She looked younger, she had fun, and went outside every chance she got. She was so strong) was diagnosed with lung cancer in february (oh and BTW Gie which is what we called her, was my hero and my best friend). Later after it had been confirmed they did another scan and found 2 more tumors, one in her lymph nodes in her neck, and the other near her waist. So they said they was going to give her 4 chemo treatments over a period of a few months. If chemo worked she would have a year left, if it didn’t only 3 months. So they started the first chemo treatment. Then the second about a month later. Then the third. Then they did another CAT scan to see if it was helping or anything. While they did the scan they found 2 more tumors on her brain! On the day of her 4th and last chemo treatment the nurse was talking to her and my Papa was there of course. Anyways papa said Gie just stopped talking mid-sentence and stared with a blank expression. They thought she was being her old stubborn self. Anyways they found out she had a major stroke and they admitted her to the hospital. She went blind in her right eye, she slept all the time, and she didn’t know anyone or anything, and she couldn’t talk. Anyways a week after being in the hospital they moved her to Hospice Care and the doctors said she only had a week to live but most likely she was going to pass away in a couple of days. I went up to Hospice once while she was in there but once again she couldn’t talk and I never really got the chance to say goodbye. The last things I told her was “goodbye Gie, I love you” and my mom (Gie is my mom’s mom) was up there everyday with my grandpa. She was a fighter definately Gie died 10 days later on July 12th, 2010 on my dad’s birthday and exactly one week before mine. I cried alot during the first week, and then sunday July 18th is when we had her memorial service (she was cremated BTW) at my church that night. When we went to church for regular church service in the morning I broke down at church, but that night I was fine even though I was depressed but I didn’t cry or anything. Oh and I made the memorial video slideshow. I felt bad that I didn’t cry or anything but people told me that was fine and Gie would want me to stay strong anyways. And I didn’t cry for about a week, and then I would cry about once every week, and then it would be like 3 times a week I would break down. Anyways now, it has been I’ve been breaking down every night. I miss her so much, I always asked her for advice on what to do and she always helped so much. Is this normal for me to be breaking down every night? I was just curious.

10 inch floor tile down with tar?
Question by David S: 10 inch floor tile down with tar?
I bought a house built in the 50′s. When I removed the carpet I found 10 by 10 old tile. Might be asbestos not vinyl I don’t think. Brittle and pops up pretty easy, breaks easy in cut glass like fashion etc just by folding.
The floor is concrete, when the tile comes off, there is a Black Mastic I could swear is Tar like on the roof, thin slightly sticky and catches dirt easy.
What is it and how do I remove it so I can lay a new floor.
Thanks for your knowlege.
The tiles come up OK it is just that darn Tar stuff, I figure the new tile glue wont stick to it as the ceramic in the dining room is coming loose. That tar is underneath those, the mortar comes loose at the tar, and the mortar is stuck to the tile. Go figure.
Thanks to everyone’s answer. Looks like this is a major job! I took a tile to the hardware where we tried several adhesive removers until we found an odorless one that worked. Mike was right on the money, odorless is the best solution, and a green one to boot. Still like you all said sanding to completely remove it will be that last step with a Bonding agent to secure the new tile.
Thanks again for all the answers, will have to use some of everyone’s help on this one!

Answer by W. C.
Don’t know of any adhesive remover that will dissolve that adhesive, but for stubborn tiles, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun & a putty knife in most cases.
For those that refuse to come up, get yourself a block of dry ice & rub it on the tile. The tile will contract enough & release from the adhesive.
The only way I have ever gotten that stuff up was with a floor sander & a bunch of disks. Be sure to wear a mask & if you use the dry ice, be sure you’ve got good ventilation as the dry ice is carbon dioxide & will cause you to pass out without good ventilation.
Be careful & don’t sand the tiles as there’s a pretty good chance they contain asbestos, which is harmless except when inhaled into the lungs & even then, small amounts usually will not affect you, but there’s no sense chancing it…work with a mask.
Good luck…
Added -
you could try a pre-mixed tile adhesive rather than dry-mix & paint the floor with a bonding agent first.
The bonding agent is a milky looking latex product that when dry is sticky & provides a bond for surfaces like your black adhesive.
You could get a quart of the bonding agent & a quart of the pre-mixed mastic & try a couple of the delaminated tiles in your dining room & see what happens.
Your only other option will be to sand the old adhesive off. If you end up sanding, do it room by room, get some thin painter’s plastic, tape it to the walls & seal your doors…it ain’t a fun job.

Sometimes I have trouble breathing while laying down and sometimes while sitting. What can be causing this?
Question by Jonathan: Sometimes I have trouble breathing while laying down and sometimes while sitting. What can be causing this?
I am 24, 359lbs, and 6′ tall. I don’t have asthma or any other respiratory problems or disorders. As far as I know, I don’t have any condition that can contribute to breathing problems. I also wake up feeling tired sometimes.
To answer Pitman Floyd, my posture is kind of stooped and I do suffer from back pain. My feet do get kind of swollen sometimes, but nothing real severe. Also, in the morning, my knees and feet also feel quite stiff.
In reference to t’s post, I do occasionally wake up with a headache and frequently wake up with a dry mouth.

could be Ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory arthritis which can cause breathing problems. But then it could be a million other things. Get checked out asap, request a blood / urine test and explain all the more serious symptoms

Any diseases that can slowly break down a persons’s entire body?
Question by : Any diseases that can slowly break down a persons’s entire body?
So I need this disease for a story. I need the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive system to all break down. But this person still has to be able to walk a few feet and talk and stuff. His vision and hearing can’t be affected but his smell, taste, and touch can. I kind of also need a cause for this disease, if possible. I was thinking about lung cancer but that would affect the nervous system as well, and I need his personality and memory to stay intact. ALS is too hard to do, this is Lou Gehrig’s disease, so can anyone think of any others?

mom is on steroides for lung cancer, slowly cutting down.?
Question by : mom is on steroides for lung cancer, slowly cutting down.?
My mother was diagnosed about a year and a half ago with lung cancer and it was already in stage 3. After wards she stared doing chemo and radiation and her body could not handle all the effects of it so she stopped. She then started doing some kind of alternative meds at this doc. they were no longer able to find a vein they could get to for her IV treatments so she has to have a minor surgery so they can put it in her chest. A while ago they found a tumor in her brain and put her on steroids to help the tumor. These steroids have affected her soooo badly and she can hardly walk anymore. She was doing just fine until she found out she had cancer and they started doing all this crazy stuff to help her. She now has eczema and since the steroids are causing her to to swell every where her eczema has been cracking and it looks real bad, she has liquid oozing from her sores. How dangerous is that? Also she has been slowly cutting down on her steroids but its like it’s making her swell up even more! Is this normal? Will she ever get the strength in her legs to be able to walk normally again? So after she is not on them any more will her body go back to the way it was before she started taking them? Any help and answers would be greatly appreciated. thank you

How do I put down linoleum over a tile floor?
Question by Sweetie Pie: How do I put down linoleum over a tile floor?
This is a large basement room and several tiles have come up and now the rest are coming loose. The tiles have been tested and there is asbestos in or on them and I don’t want to pull them all up. Someone suggested placing a thin layer of cement over the tiles and then put down the linoleum. Sounds messy to me. What is the best method to do this with out pulling up the tiles? I cannot afford to have them removed by a company.
Best answer:
Answer by Landon
you are going to want to put your linoleum on a flat surface or you will be able to feel the bumps and cracks between tiles and where you had tiles. i have never tried a thin layer of cement but it would be expensive and you would have to hire someone for that because you are going to want a decent finish on it. my advice is pull the tiles up get a good respirator and plastic up all your openings to the room so it doesnt get into the rest of your house and hopefully the come up easy which they probably will if they are already coming loose. the asbestos shouldnt get into the air too much if you dont have to break the tiles or really pound away on them to get them loose.

Question by : I am really worn down and sad. I am a middle aged woman who has been dealing >See Below?
My mother 75 lives with me. She drives, and cooks. Walks un assisted. She has lung cancer for 1.5 years now. Her now retired Oncologist deemed her stable before retiring because her lung tumors reversed themselves and two dissapeared . She had three. He opted to just keep watch on them every six months. Hers seemed he said much slower growing. She was/is due to go back to see the new Oncologist whom already has displayed signs of greed over patient/family to me. I will get to that in a minute. But.. she had Vertigo several weeks ago.. and the Cat Scan shown an old stroke that she never had signs having. She takes an aspirin regimen they said that could be why.
Well.. the doctor sent her for an MRI to see what caused the stroke. It turns out the cancer went to her brain.. much unlike the Oncologist even suggested and never checked before retiring. She now has two tumors or Mets as they like to call them. From what I have been reading on cancer sites this can be an ongoing battle to keep them at bay.. they come back. I read it all. She is now.. going to need my help and care more then ever. They probably will want her to even start chemo once these are under control.
Well the prognosis varies from 10 months three years.. and some five. Of course the stats are always lower then from those you talk to.
I am my mothers only daughter. I live in a state for five years that I love.. however.. I am about to lose my unemployment state benefit extension at the absolute worse time for me.. this month and all this news right before Christmas. I have not seriously been able to financially celebrate Christmas in over seven years. I have nothing. I can’t find work .. and have been looking. I have to now.. get a job around my mothers schedule of treatments and maybe even surgery.
My brother is a drinker and he lives out of state. He won’t come to help. My other brother does not care about my mother or I at all.. but talks to the other brother. He knows.. and does not care.
I have no friends here.. or neighbors or anyone to help or talk to me about this all. I feel like I may one day end up on the street seriously unable to afford to live all because of my good nature in beleiving to help my mother. Which is wonderful.. but later I am left to pick up the pieces in an economy that makes it next to impossible to find work. I was thinking of returning to school before this and now.. with this all I can’t.
Geeesh.. If that is not bad enough my old friend from out of state where I use to live called me after I phoned her crying about the news.. and she is asking me the most insensitive and unrealted questions about what kinds of jobs I did before.. and how many I have had since living here.. Nothing about anything that matters. I am scared and never ever felt so alone. If I had kids or a husband or a boyfriend.. I would not be perhaps so.. scared. But.. I don’t have the security of any other family, friends even.. No one seems to care or want to help me.
Its a cruel cruel world we live in today. I just don’t have much more hope and I am losing my momentum and I feel like I am on a sinking ship here and may go down with it.. me and my two dogs are all I have. I can’t afford the two bedroom here. My mom has been paying the rent in exchange for my help and me the bills which will be stopping the end of this month unless a job opportunity comes threw soon.
Where I live the snow is expected by the middle to end of the month and does not stop. Its on going. I didn’t think it was a good idea to re new my lest in Feb. But.. what choice do I have? I don’t know if its wise to find a place to live now.yet.. with all the snow and sub zero temps coming our way soon. But.. a move is going to have to be done.. Or else she will have no choice but to declare bankruptcy on all her medical bills. Its either or. But.. I can’t do all this alone and the winter is not the time for this. I put up prior to the news our rickety old small tree. That helps but no gifts once again.
I don’t know how many more sad Christmas’s and years are ahead. It seems like a domino effect.
Please offer your support. I need some positive things. Thanks
I left word with the new Oncologist that my mother and I have not yet met. My mothers doctor spoke to him so he knew what the MRI said . Never called me back. As if time is money and that weighs more then patient care and compassion? He should not be working in the field if money comes before patient care. My dads Oncologist had called me from Texas when I lived in NJ and spoke to me like I was his little sister. That is how nice and concerned he was. I did manage to get a three day earlier appointment. I am just afraid this new Oncologist may be hard to work or relate to.
Its a sad mess. I have no medical benefits for me and at this rate have no idea if or when I will be able to . I don’t remember a time I actually genuinely had a good time and was happy. Its been that long. I smile on my face and sadness is always in my heart. If not sadness.. worry about how I will one day manage financially… Or.. if I will need signs and a can to pan handle, the way the econo
the way the economy is going.

WARNING: it is a bit gory
Welcome to hell. The fiery walls and floors are blazing red. But look again; this isn’t fire, it’s blood, the blood of your mother, sister, friends, and soon yours. Your skin is peeled off of your face like the rind of an orange, revealing your broken bones beneath it. Pain, which has been your life-long companion, now consumes you, as it always promised it would. The fire races across your flesh and you welcome it. All that you can hope for is that death will be more forgiving than life. Fiction right? For you yes, but for the animals, or as we like to call them “meat,” that you see on your dinner plates, this was their reality. As Linda McCartney once said, “If slaughter houses had glass walls, we’d all be vegetarians.” Well, I am here today to construct for you a glass slaughter house and a factory farm, because not only is factory farming torturing animals, it is also making us sick and it’s destroying our planet.
According to a U. N. senior official, “Livestock are…the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems.” Methane gas produced by farm animals is such a major contributor to global warming, that researchers at the University of Chicago say the average driver in the U.S. would be more effective at reducing climate change by switching to a vegan diet than switching to driving a hybrid. Industrial hog farm manure alone is the biggest polluter of our nation’s rivers and waterways.
Eating animals can be as bad for our bodies as it for the environment. For starters, there are 14 times more pesticides in meat than on plant foods. And the dairy business has advertised their way into making us believe we need milk for strong bones, when in fact, a Harvard study found that women who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. Also heart problems, cancer, strokes, and other disease have been linked to dairy and meat consumption.
For me, the most convincing reason not to consume animals is the cruelty afflicted upon them. For instance, chickens live along side tens of thousands of other birds in cramped sheds, which may not be cleaned for several years at a time, causing the chicken’s waste and corpses to pile up beneath them. The strong ammonia from their waste burns the chicken’s lungs and skin and many go blind. These conditions cause stress, and stressed hens tend to peck each other, so their beaks, full of nerve endings, are seared off with a hot blade. At the slaughter house, chickens are paralyzed by having their heads dunked in an electrically charged tub to prevent them from thrashing around as the conveyer belt carries them along to have their throats sliced by a saw– alive, just not kicking.
Pigs and cows suffer similar tortures. They must spend their whole lives confined in tight stalls, which have been banned in many other countries, but not in the U.S., not in the land of the free. And here, pigs have their tails chopped off, the tips of their teeth snipped, and like cows, are castrated, all without pain killers.
So what kind of people work at these places? At Tyson Foods, a major supplier to KFC, an undercover investigator filmed workers who jumped up and down on live chickens, ran them over with fork lift trucks, drop kicked them like footballs, squeezed them like water balloons to spray feces over other birds, and tore their heads off to write blood graffiti. A worker at another farm stated, “One time I took a knife…and sliced off the end of a hog’s nose…[then] I took a handful of salt and ground it in…the hog went crazy.…” Another worker stated, “I’ve drug cows till their bones start breaking…they get stuck up in the doorway, just pull them till their hide be ripped, till the blood just rip on the steel and concrete…and the cow be crying with its tongue sticking out…pull him till his neck just pop.”
In one slaughterhouse, pigs were left dangling by one leg while workers went on their lunch break. One man described how “pigs on the kill floor have come up and nuzzled [him] like a puppy. Then two minutes later [he]…beat them to death with a pipe.” And pigs are smart, smarter than dogs. But even if animals were mindless, as Jeremy Benthem points out, “the question is not, ‘Can they reason?’ nor, ‘Can they talk?’ but rather, ‘Can they suffer?’” They can see the killing ahead of them, they can smell the blood. They hear the squealing, the screams, the cries, the silence.
Eating animals is bad for you, your environment, and the animals. If just one of you decides to stop, you will be saving at least 90 lives this year. Of course not eating animals may seem inconvenient at first, but altering your diet is a lot less inconvenient than undergoing a bypass operation or radiation and chemo. If you must eat animals, buy from stores like Whole Foods who only sell animals that have been treated humanely. You have a choice. When you eat meat from factory farms you are eating pain, suffering, and torture. As Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated . . . the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” Choose not to eat meat from factory farms, because this is violence you can stop.
PeaBee: I am sure you want a response to your comment, so I will humor you.
I am perfectly aware of the methods used at slaughter houses seeing as I have read 10 credible books on the matter, 2 of which are currently on the best sellers list. I am also aware that if I am wearing leather some animal died. Luckily, I am not. I am also proud to say that I do not feed my dogs Iams or any other foods that are tested on animals. However yes, I know they have animal products in them, although there are vegitarean dog foods. I did not say I am not harming animals in anyway, I am just trying to minimize it. Yes Linda died of cancer, hehe you caught that. I am not disregarding genetics though. If she was a vegan however, her life would have been prolonged, and she may have been able to beat cancer. What specifically is not factual about this, I assure you I am not pulling anything out of thin air….
Yes, it is my goal to connect with peoples emotional side, and yes I may have too much faith in people, however than again, I may not.
It is true that I am only 16, but if you tried to tell anyone that knows me that I am impressionable, they would laugh. Furthermore, If was impressionable I may consider what you have said, however maybe not seeing as you are the one that didn’t back anything up. Is it truly a problem that I am young, or is it a problem that you are well, less young and set in your ways.
My speech is only intended to have a positive impact, I am sorry that you are unable to see this. I assure you once more that everything I wrote is the truth and I would never fabricate anything.
Best wishes, Lisa
