What to study for the APES (AP Environmental Science) exam?
Question by : What to study for the APES (AP Environmental Science) exam?
I really just want to pass the exam (a score of 3). I know that from year to year the College Board can change the exams a lot. What topics should I focus on studying? The test is tomorrow! Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help!
Best answer:
Answer by Chelle
I’m taking the test tomorrow too, & honestly I’m just reviewing the main themes/ideas behind each chapter. APES isn’t like other liberal arts APs in that it’s not really fact-based, it’s more about applying the concepts you’ve learned about to your understanding of the real world. So, I think if you just review ideas like renewable/non-renewable resources, invasive species, & population growth, you’ll be fine on the test
Good luck!
*Also, check with the college you’re looking into going to (or already accepted) about passing scores. I know my college will only accept a score of 4 or higher, not 3.

Help me Pick an Environmental Health Project?
Question by jancanyon: Help me Pick an Environmental Health Project?
Hello! I just moved half way across the country to Montana to work at hospital. Part of my job is to come up with an environmental health project that pertains to patients in my area. I have a couple ideas–maybe anyone reading this could tell me their favorite idea…or give me additional topics? First off there are a lot of migrant workers here. Here are my ideas thus far:
1) Pesticide exposure and the related health risks to farm workers
2) Water testing near farmworker housing and the related health risks
3) Underground storage container leaks and the related health risks
I’m putting this under homework help, even though its not really homework.

Lying about environmental test results illegal ?
Question by jackie: Lying about environmental test results illegal ?
A metal factory hired an agency to test our home for possible TCE/PCE contamination.
I spoke with the rep and he said they were hired by the metal factory .He said DEP didn’t order them the test – they are doing it in compliance with the DEP regulations.
The rep laughed the while talking about expected contamination level. He said they are expecting a very low result.
Since these people are on the same side as the toxic metal factory – can they lie about the level of toxicity to the DEP ?
Should I hire someone else to do an independent test of the air in our home ?

How can I perform an environmental experiment? Correlating pH with plant growth?
Question by Cara: How can I perform an environmental experiment? Correlating pH with plant growth?
I’m performing an experiment for IB enviro. and I have 2 days to do this experiment in. I have a pond environment to test, but I don’t know how to test how the abiotic factor (pH) is affecting the biotic factor (plant growth or plant abundance, since i was think of maybe counting the plants? but it may not be sufficient)
Critiquing or tips of how to make this experiment more “reliable” would be great! Thanks!

Answer by JOHN H
If you have only 2 days to do this experiment, you have a real task. To see a response in that time from macro plants would be most unlikely. That leaves you with algae, for with you would need to locate a dense, uniform culture, preferably of a single species. (My greenhouse water tank is bright green at the moment – probably Euglena or Chlorella, so the task of locating a source may not be too difficult!!)
Divide the culture into 6 uniform suspensions in glass beakers. Buffer them at your chosen pH range (e.g. 5 6 7 8 and 9), leaving one beaker as control. Count the unbuffered sample at the start of the trial. At the end of your 2 day trail, re-suspend them and do a living cell count on a known volume (you may need to learn about cell counting, haemocytometers, shallow well slides etc in order to get a reliable count). This method would give you a crude guide to the pH tolerance of the species.

Q&A: How has the movement of Earth caused environmental and climate change?
Question by : How has the movement of Earth caused environmental and climate change?
Think Deep Time. (I’m studying for a test in this is something we have to know.)
Best answer:
Answer by D B
One example would be slowing of Earths rotational spin in effort to tidally lock with the moon. (The moon is already tidally locked with the Earth). This implies that in the past, the Earth was spinning faster. If thats true, that must mean the days were shorter, and one spot on Earth went through day and night phases more rapidly, meaning a more even distribution of heat.
Consider roasting a marshmallow, the more frequently often you turn it, the more evenly distributed the heat will be. If you turn it slowly, it will heat up on one side more than the other, and you run the risk of lighting it on fire! Perhaps this isn’t the best analogy, for marshmallows also don’t have hydrospheres and atmospheres to help distribute the heat around its surface…
Also, think about the precession of Earths rotational axis, which completes its cycle once every 26000 years or so. If the seasons depend on the tilt of the Earth, then the seasons must have changed in duration and intensity over the past as well.

How hard is the AP Environmental Science test, can i self study for it?
Question by the renegade angel: How hard is the AP Environmental Science test, can i self study for it?
Okay, so my school doesnt offer alot of AP’s so I cant take AP environmental science. But I’m already taking a regular Environmental Science class so i was thinking about self studying for the test and taking the ap test anyway. however i dont know anyone who has the test. So anyway, i was wondering how hard the test is and if it would be easy to self study for it
also what would be the best way to study for it…should i just buy a guide from princeton review or something?
Best answer:
Answer by Alex P
I’ve heard that this is the easiest AP to self-study for, especially if you’re already taking a regular version of the class. I would recommend buying a study book from Princeton Review. Also, you should look at the essay questions from previous years at collegeboard.com and practice them to see how well you do.
Good luck!

What Do You Need to Become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist In NC?
Question by magician668: What Do You Need to Become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist In NC?
I want to be a REHS (health inspector) in NC. I know you have to have a two hundred question test, but What else and other requirements would you need?
Best answer:
Answer by the_talon007
I am Not 100% sure about NC but most REHS take the REHS/RS exam from the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). This has certain transcript requirement before you can take the test. I think it is a Physical science degree, a degree in Environmental Health from an accredited institution, or 30+ hours of physical science on you college transcripts. You can check out the NEHA website [ http://www.neha.org/credential/index.shtml#rehsrs_cred ]to be certain, and your State office of Professional Licensing should be able to provide you with more details specific to your state. (this appears to be a useful link http://www.rsboard.com/ )

Leasing a Property: Environmental Concerns to Consider Before Signing
In today’s turbulent real estate market, many people who would otherwise purchase residential or commercial properties are now turning to leasing. For many, leasing provides them with the flexibility and the ability to move into a property when the market is uncertain and purchase finance options are not always available. Many may also consider hiring an environmental professional to perform a Phase I and II Review. A Phase I Review involves an extensive research of the history of the location, building and neighborhood. The Phase II Review involves testing the structure and grounds for any evidence of contamination. This step in the process can help to either confirm or refute the findings from the initial Phase I Review. During a Phase II Review, the consultant may test the soil, air and groundwater for potential contamination. This is also the time that indoor testing for mold, bacteria, asbestos, lead, chemicals, radon and vapor intrusion issues should be addressed.
