First of all, good for you for wanting to be more educated about respiratory illness! Respiratory illness can take a rat down quickly, so it’s good to learn all you can and take necessary measures to prevent this. It’s also very important that you locate a veterinarian who treats rats now rather than trying to find one when you have a sick rat and time is of the essence. It’s much better to be prepared ahead of time.
Rats have very sensitive respiratory systems. It’s totally normal for the little critters to sneeze every once in a while, but excessive sneezing , sniffling, or a red-tinged discharge from their eyes or nose could be an indication of a respiratory infection. The red-tinged discharge is not blood, but rather porphyrin, which is normal to see from time to time. However, stress or illness may cause increased production of proffering.
Unfortunately, mycoplasma is carried in the upper respiratory tract of most rats. Stress and illness can bring on an active mycoplasmal infection. Therefore, it is very important that you provide your rat(s) with as stress-free of an environment as possible (not being tormented by other pets, small children, loud noises, etc.), a cage that comfortably houses the number of rats you have in it, a very clean, well-ventilated cage with appropriate bedding (no pine or cedar as these woods contain phenols that damage rats’ respiratory systems), a hidey house to go to to relax and have some privacy, plenty of exercise and interaction, a constant supply of fresh water (water bottles are the best option), and a very healthy diet consisting of a high-quality lab block and safe-for-rats fresh fruits and veggies.
If you find that your rat is sneezing or sniffling excessively, wheezing, laboring to breathe, not eating/drinking as usual, and just lying around, please immediately take it to a veterinarian who treats rats. They veterinarian will listen to the rat’s breathing and will quickly be able to tell you if the rat is well or not. Liquid antibiotics (Baytril) may be prescribed to help get your rat over its illness. You will administer this via an eye dropper. Rats will usually take this very well, especially if the vet adds just a bit of cherry flavoring to the medicine. If indeed you rat does have a respiratory tract infection, it is extremely important to administer its medicine as directed and until gone and to follow all of the above instructions on a clean cage, a stress-free environment, healthy diet, etc. It is also important to quarantine this rat as mycoplasma infection can be transmitted through direct contact and the air. If you have other rats, watch them closely to make sure they don’t exhibit signs of illness. This must be monitored closely.

1 week later, it showed “abnormal ekg” and also had “chronic pulmonary disease pattern” on it. Somebody said the 2nd EKG could be a false-positive because they can change from day-to-day etc. Is this correct?

I’m a diabetic in very sad shape. I’m going downhill I know it. I have very poor eating habits & barely any self control. I am disabled due to a back injury. I am over weight by at least 100 lbs. I have cardiac artery disease & am awaiting a triple bypass surgery. The doctors want me to lose another 50 lbs before they do the surgery so my survival rate will be better when they have to put me on the heart lung machine for surgery. I have high blood pressure, low thyroid, asthmatic, quit smoking 7 months ago, on oxygen 24 hours a day at home & cannot exercise. My oxygen saturation drops just getting up to walk to the next room. One of the side effects of my asthma medication is weight gain. One of the side effects of my diabetic medication is weight gain. My low thyroid makes me battle with weight gain. I am not able to get up & prepare healthy meals for myself on a daily basis. I can only stand for about 5 minutes at a time. Like I said, I am in bad shape. I was drinking Coke Zero but my parents had a fit because Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame & is known to cause brain cancer in lab rats. So I went back to regular coke. I thought I would try some Gatorade. Now I find out that stuff is no better for me than the colas. So I am SUPER discouraged. What the devil can diabetics drink besides water ??? I can’t cook or eat 3 square meals a day so I have a lot of frozen foods which is also bad. Seems everything I touch is bad & I’m about to give up entirely. What can I eat & drink ?
I have already had 2 heart attacks. I am under strict instructions NOT to exercise, yet they want me to lose weight. I can’t walk into the next room without having my oxygen drop & be near another attack, sometimes having to use a nitro. I’m not wining because I’m in this shape. I’m wining because everything I try to do to get out of this shape is the wrong thing or not good for me or it’s something I can’t do. I have not been on insulin since being diagnosed except when I go into the hospital. But I am fixing to have to ask my doctor to put me on it & then fight to try to get help to pay for it because I have no insurance & get my medical care from the state. This is what poverty is like. I can’t afford the type of foods from the grocery that I should be eating because low sugar foods are twice as expensive. I can barely afford the bad stuff. I am quite discouraged.

Understand that your parents are very scientifically misinformed. Aspartame DOES cause cancer in lab rats. BUT for it to affect YOU, your would have to eat like 40 pounds of Aspartame EVERY DAY.
A Coke Zero or Diet Coke a day, even three or four, is NOT going to harm you. What IS going to harm you is all that sugar in regular Coke, Gatorade, ALL “power Drinks”, and things like that.
you MUST cut out ALL SUGARS in your diet. and it IS OK to substitute aspartame and Splenda (and ANY artificial sweetener) to ge the sweet taste.
You must ALSO reduce your Carbohydrate intake. Get a Diabetic Cookbook, and USE IT. It is extremely important that you know the sources of carbohydrates, AND know just how many “carbs” you can have at each meal.
You have multiple problems causing weight gain. Therefore you MUST reduce yo r caloric intake. “Normal” people requires about 2000 calories a day. But due to your medication your only have two choices:
Cut your calories down to 1600 a day
2) Get LOTS more exercise.
The more exercise you get, the more you can eat! Walk, swim, ride a bike. Play volleyball or jog if you are able.
YOU are the answer to your problems. You need to stop whining about what you CAN’T do, and start doing everything you CAN do.
Control of diabetes is ALL up to you. YOU will determine whether or not you live or die. LITERALLY. if you continue to make bad choices in your lifestyle (eating a poor diet, failing to get exercise, not taking your medicines properly) then you will die young and in a great deal of pain, You will probably also be limited to a nursing home at a young age, unable to function outside because of amputations, heart attacks , or strokes.
But if you develop the self-discipline to take control of your life, exercise, diet, and medicine RIGHT NOW, then you can live as long as anyone else, and participate in school sports, music, a career, and even get married and have children of your own.
EDUCATE YOURSELF! Your parents are a POOR source of information. Ask your doctor to refer you to a Diabetic Educator who can teach you the CORRECT things to eat, and stop listening to your parents. concerning your diet.

i had a 7 year old black lab that i got as a puppy for my 16th birthday. he had Addison’s disease for the past 5 years costing me over $ 10,000 throughout his whole life with regular visits and monthly shots. the disease was apparently taking a tole on all this organs so when he got pneumonia, the vet said he would have had it for a long time for how much damage there was, but he never let us know he was even a little bit sick until two nights ago he went and hid under my bed (where he slept as a puppy when i lived at home his favorite spot when i was just in my room) and was completely out of it. wouldn’t move but would only wag the tip of his tail. we took him to the emergency vet they kept him over night.i begged them to let me stay and they allowed it the. next day they told us his lung had ruptured and i watched as he vomited over two gallons of blood throughout the night that is was time we had to put him down and all i can think about is i hope he knows we did all we could. i couldn’t be in the room when they put him down my husband who wasn’t as close to him had to do it. i dont want him to think i just left him and didn’t try everything there was

She will lick everything on the floor, fur balls, hair, etc. Then if I let her out she does the same outside. She will lick the entire deck clean of hair, leaves etc. This only happens occasionally but I don’t know why she’s doing it. It is NOT because she is bored, it’s almost like she’s trying to make herself vomit, but she never does. It is obviously not because she is hungry or thirsty. I don’t think it’s relevant but she is a 2.5 year old lung cancer survivor. We had her lung removed and she’s been great. Any suggestions? Please don’t tell me to take her to a vet because that appt. is already scheduled.

it sounds like she is lacking some kind of vitamin.. maybe you should ask your vet for a multi-vitamin for your dog or you can get them at petland…. maybe that will help… she is getting older in age so it would really help alot…

I just answered a question on environmentalists and how they take some of their causes to far. No one suggested destroying the earth… just USE COMMON SENSE. and one person had this answer:

One of my best friends has just been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer.
Can somebody please tell me all about it? I know nothing about it but I need to know if he’ll be ok, how long he has left if he isn’t ok, if he can be treated, when his hair will fall out, etc. someone please tell me everything there is to know about stage 3 lung cancer!!

If your best friend is under 45 years old it is not likely they have lung cancer.
If they are under 30 they don’t.

For over 5 years, I have been having breathing problems. Three weeks ago I decided to go to the doctor’s because my condition hasn’t been getting better (although it hadn’t gotten worse). I am scared of doctors so it took a lot of courage on my part to go.
PLEASE READ EVERYTHING!
My symptoms include shortness of breath that can be accompanied by wheezing sometimes. I’ve gotten bad symptoms sometimes at night, and sometimes during the day. I am pretty sure it’s asthma because everyone I spoke to (including an actual doctor online) says that’s what it sounds like.
Over a period of days or weeks I could show some symptoms, while other times I am ok. Last thursday I couldn’t sleep because my breathing was so bad.
My doctor did a blood test, chest x-ray, and breathing test (spirometry that included taking a medication to see if it helps). She told me today that all came back normal and she doesn’t know what is wrong with me. She said “I see no evidence whatsoever of a serious lung disease, and I really don’t think it’s asthma.” I told her that many people said to me that they had a normal spirometry even with asthma and she said “If you had asthma, the spirometry would have showed something.”
She then told me to try breathing exercises for the next month because it may be anxiety related. I don’t feel anxious at all even with breathing problems. She said after that she might refer me to an ENT or respirologist.
What could be going on? I am so depressed that my tests apparently yielded no new information. What should I ask her to do?
Also, I am a 19 year old male. I never smoked (although my dad did in the past but usually kept us away from the smoke.
I’ve been having this for 5 years. She gave me a piece of paper with instructions on breathing exercises. It says that it helps prevent hyperventilation and calms nerves. I DO NOT hyperventilate and usually don’t get nervous. I am short of breath usually.

On Oct.26 my uncle who was 22 died of lung and bone cancer he lasted about 10 months. This was a heavy blow for me and my mother (I am 14 yrs old), we were preparing an early thanksgiving for him and I was sitting in the room with my uncle (CJ) when he died,. he was placed in hospice care about a week earlier so he passed inside my grandmothers house. This was alot for me and my mom to handle because he was like a son to her and a brother to me. when he passed my oldest uncle( Ali) got into a fist fight with my mother, because she was hysterical he punched her in the face and they started fighting.. my grandma has always been biased towards Ali so she blamed my mother for the fight and told her that is was her fault. My mother was angered by this because she was the only one who was there for my grandma, and was the only one who helped her with my uncle when he was sick with cancer, After the funeral,(28th ) i had closure, and thought that in time everything could be okay.
The day my uncle got cremated which was on the 31st my stepfather had looked through my mothers phone and saw that she had been texting other guys. (Note: he isnt exactly my stepfather, but my mom has a son with him and they have been together on and off for 12 yrs,but since he is a cop and me and my mom dont live with him my mom would get lonely and would talk to other guys and girls. He would never spend time with her.)
They got into a huge fight and my mom promised that she would be faithful to him and wanted to start over. later that day my grandfather who had been staying in our house in hospice care had passed away he was 64 years old and was suffering from hepatitis C. This had officially crushed me and my mom, we just lost two of the most important people in our life. (My grandfather is like a father to me – my father left me when i was 2 years old.) My mom believes that he died because of her, because he had died about an hour before we got home, since we were at the crematory and it was in Brooklyn, and we live in the Bronx (New York) .
The next day my stepfather decided to “cheer” my mom up by buying her the new iPhone, and he had all her contacts and pictures imported from her old phone to the new one. and after having a nice day with him and my brother we all decided it was time for us to move in with each other into an apartment, and start becoming like a new family.
We decided to stay over my grandmothers that night. It was about 1 in the morning when my stepfather called my mom, saying she needed to meet him in front of the building, because it was an “emergency“. (she thought he was hurt or that something happened to my little brother (Manny) who is 7yrs old.) Ali decided to go with her to see what was wrong.(I stayed upstairs). About an hour later my mom came up stairs crying and upset, I found out this was because my stepfather had paid the guy that was dealing with the cell phone to uncover EVERY deleted text and voicemail that my mom had, and made him send it to my stepfathers cell phone. My stepfather discovered that my mom cheated on him and said that he never wanted to see her again,. I noticed my mom was alone so when I asked her where ali was she said ali stayed with my stepfather to talk with him..
My mom and grandma went to sleep, I stayed up/
An hour later Ali rang the bell (I knew it was him because herings the bell in a certain pattern) I unlocked the door and used the bathroom for a second. When I came out Ali had just walked in and he just started cursing me out “ You little fucking bitch, how could you leave the door open, you stupid little bitch I could have been dead outside” Ali is a 38yr old man cursing me out ( a 14yr old) for opening the door for him. Mom heard this and ran out the bedroom, she was pissed that he was cursing me out and wanted to know what happened . Long story short Ali believed that my stepfather was going to kill our whole family( even though my stepfather wouldn’t lay a finger on anyone), and my grandmother taking sides as usual, told my mom that this was all her fault (but It wasn’t my moms fault that Ali wanted to be nosy and decided to involve himself in someone else’s relationship, or that he is a VERY paranoid person).Ali told my mom that she is slut and im not far behind, then he said that we arent his family and to never speak to him again. Ali and my mom started fighting physically again, and we ended up leaving the house in our pj’s. at 3 in the morning
To sum it up my uncle died, grandfather died, my moms relationship is ruined, me and my mom are now separated from my brother and my stepfather and our only family wants nothing to do with us.
Both me and my mom are falling apart, and I don’t know how we will be able to recover. I need help and advice ~ Thank You

For a 14 year old this does sound tough.
But I guess the good thing is that you and your mom are together. It’s always better than being alone.
You will eventually overcome death. Death should not be experienced in suffering. You must realize that it is a natural phenomenon in life. When you are born, you agree to die one day. And implicitely you understand that all humans agreed as well. So though the memories and nostalgia will always come back, though the hole in your heart that the loss had created will never be filled, you will overcome it.
Ok now the stepfather, I think he’s not worth it. WHat normal guy would go through all his girllfriend’s deleted texts? Somebody so suspicious and jealous is not worthy of your mom’s time. She will find a better man, believe me. I mean we are 7 billion on earth, about half of them are men so I am sure there are plenty of options out there.
Finally, Ali. Ok whatever happens, he’ll still be your uncle. So either your choose to not talk to him again, then he becomes a stranger that you call uncle or you choose to accept for who he is (though paranoid and unstable he is)
ANd never forget, no matter what, there is beauty in this world waiting for you to reach out for it.

Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare tumor, with incidence of 1-2 per million population annually. Adrenocortical carcinoma has a bimodal distribution by age, with cases clustering in children under 6, and in adults 30–40 years old. Adenocortical carcinoma is remarkable for the many hormonal syndromes which can occur in patients with steroid hormone-producing (“functional”) tumors, including Cushing’s syndrome, Conn syndrome, virilization, and feminization. Adrenocortical carcinoma has often invaded nearby tissues or metastasized to distant organs at the time of diagnosis, and the overall 5-year survival rate is only 20-35%.

Cancer may happen due to a genetic predisposition, meaning that a person has a certain likelihood of developing cancer at a certain age due to abnormalities in their genetic code, for example there are genetic tests which can determine how likely a certain person is to develop a specific type of cancer.
Cancer can also be caused by carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents, for example a simple cancer causing chemical is gasoline.
There are also substances which become carcinogens after they enter our body, these are called procarcinogens, for example nitrites taken in by our diet turn into nitrosamines in our body, which are carcinogenic.
Our technology advances too quickly in recent decades for us to fully understand the impact on our bodies, for example the toner in copy machines cannot be absorbed by our bodies during our lifetime, e.g. tar from smoking is fully absorbed within 10 years, and since toner particles have sharp edges, they work their way into our lung tissue causing cancer.
Many studies, such as the link you posted, use correlation to find a connection between a substance being carcinogenic, for example if a small number of people consuming product X has a higher than average cancer rate after Y amount of years, that substance is believe to cause cancer.
However since such studies use small sample sizes e.g. 100 or 1,000 people, they are not as reliable. Also studies are performed by people, these people get paid for what they are doing, meaning someone pays for the study, for example how accurate will the results be, if the party who pays for the study has an interest in the outcome e.g. a tobacco company pays for the study etc.

I was not very familiar with this disease so I did some research. Is the type you have cystic bronchiectasis. If it is, according to the source I used, it is the only one whose effects are irreversible.Yet it said nothing about shortening your life span that much. How long have you had the disease? Was it a result of having pneumonia or tuberculosis? According to this source there are medicines to get rid of your excess mucous and exercises you can do to help the process. I would suggest contacting the American Lung Association. I hope they are able to help

Because they’re kids and they love spiting people. Obviously the headmaster or whoever showed the pictures to them wanted a different response; solemn, shocked response. The high school kids obviously knew this and set out to do the very opposite. If it’s any consolation, they are kids and for them to respond like this to spite the person doing it, they must have felt the effect or realised what they were there for. Maybe they felt some desired emotion.
