Life expectancy of someone with emphysema?
Question by : Life expectancy of someone with emphysema?
My dad(now 57) got diagnosed last year. He did not quite smoking either. He doesn’t really seem to care, or realize that this is a life-threatening disease. I have done a little research, but what are his chances of living until he is 60. He sleeps with an oxygen mask. He smokes at least a pack a day, drinks coffee, doesn’t exercise. It is sad how horrible he lives his life, but I am only 15, and want him to see me graduate.. Is it possible this can happen. And if so, how much longer do you think he could have. They diagnosed him when he passed out soo much, because he had a build up of tar in his lungs he couldn’t breathe. That was last year or 2 years ago, but I remember about 5-7 years ago that happened too. He passed out while driving because he couldn’t get any oxygen, could that have been the emphysema too, meaning he has had it for more than a year or two? I want him to see me get married. Have children, live my life. I doubt that will happen, but at least I want him to see me graduate. My grandpa promised me he would live long enough to see me graduate, unfortunately he passed away from cancer 2 years ago. I never expected my dad not to live that long either. I wanted both of them, and now I may not have either of them. What do you think?

Answer by Extra Stuff
My father also , a smoker, was diagnosed at age 60, and died at 84, but he did not use oxygen.
Everyone is different and there is no set rule on how long one can live with this disease.

Q&A: How accurate are Dr’s on life expectancy?
Question by A: How accurate are Dr’s on life expectancy?
I asked a ? a month back or so about my mothers cancer. She has breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. The were able to control it until recently. Chemo for the cancer in the rest of her body is no longer an option and neither is radiation on the brain. They said they would do it but it was my mothers wish to stop treatments. Her oncologist gave her 3 wks to 3 months to live. It was a shock but he said it is an extremely aggressive cancer. We have seen many of the signs which include not eating, sleeping for 20-22 hours a day( which this week has been the exact opposite due to a steroid they have her taking for swelling), she hasn’t been able to walk for a month now, and she also hasn’t been going to the bathroom for days. The baffling part is when she is awake she is relatively alert and is still “mom”, it is hard to beleive 3wks she could be gone.

Doctors are not seers ( although they appear to portray themselves as such ), they can give some general time frame, but whether it is accurate is another story. In general they give the minimum life expectancy time, because really they do not know what the actual period left would be. Remember that reality often works quite differently, so it is best to disregard the 3 months assessment and just be optimistic. Life tends to be anything but predictable.

What happens in the 4th stage of ovarian cancer How long is life expectancy in this final stage?
Question by augs67: What happens in the 4th stage of ovarian cancer How long is life expectancy in this final stage?
My best friend is in stage 4 of ovarian cancer. She has hospice at her house. It seems to me, that she only has a few weeks left to live. Can she continue to live for 3 or 4 more months? Or does it depend of the individual person? Her cancer has spread to many of her organs.

Life expectancy after stopping brain cancer treatment?
Question by jennasjello: Life expectancy after stopping brain cancer treatment?
If treatment for malignant brain tumors is no longer effective & a patient is told by a doctor to stop treatment, about how long do they have to live?
I realize that there are a lot of factors that come into play with cancer, but I’m just looking for an estimate?
If it helps with an estimated answer, there are 20+ brain tumors currently.
Best answer:
Answer by Jimmy Stott
I am guessing less than 2 years. The famous golfer Seve Ballesteros had fewer tumours and had them removed. He died 2 yrs later. Given the spread you describe, <2 yrs sound about right.
Every person is different though and so are their tumours, of which there are several types. Ask the oncologist for the best estimate.

Cribiform carcinoma of the breast, moderately differentiated and infiltrated, AND
Metastatic breast cancer all over both lungs, and in ALL the bones of the body?
My mother in law has been diagnosed with all of these in Mexico, but the doctors are not telling her anything. She has 6 kids who are trying to get answers, but they either don’t ask, forget to ask, or accept vague answers from the physicians.
Can anyone give me a survival rate for ALL of these?
And please do not tell me that nobody knows…I’m just asking for a general idea.
I know very little about cancer and how different cancers affect people’s bodies.
They haven’t given a stage of lung cancer, either.
Thanks so much!
ALSO….she doesn’t really feel bad, which surprises me. (other than pain in her breast where the tumor is, and she has problems with her hands.
Yes, the doc said she had bone cancer in ALL her bones, which is a little hard for me to understand…(all the way to her toes?)
Thanks for the great info….this brings me to my next question: What kind of pain is she in for in the next year, and what can we get for her/do for her to make her more comfortable???
Thanks

I can’t answer your question specifically because no one has a crystal ball. However, any one of these conditions on its own would definitely shorten one’s expected life span. Combined, the prognosis is even more bleak. Is there any way you can create a list of questions for the children to take to the next visit? If family asks very specific questions and then records the answers, there might be more clarity about the situation. Some people take notebooks to appointments just because the amount of information can be overwhelming. There are also patient advocates who can help guide patients through some of these questions. Good luck to you and your family.

Q&A: What is the life expectancy for stage 4 melanoma skin cancer?
Question by Gina S: What is the life expectancy for stage 4 melanoma skin cancer?
The cancer has already spread to the lungs, liver and possibly the brain we are not sure about that yet they have scheduled a brain scan. This is my dad who is only 59, he just doesnt seem to know what is going on anymore. He acts like he is lost. What should I expect?
My dad has been struggling with cancer for about 4 yrs now. The first time the cancer was found in the bladder, kidneys. He now has only one kidney. Later he was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer at stage 3. Back in Nov 2007 he had a surgery removing some lymph nodes and then he began chemo shortly after which made him to sick and he quit taking it after about 3 wks. That was December07-Jan08 about 3wks ago in May 08 they found that the cancer has spread to the lungs and I believe there are 2nodes in each lung and now I was told my dad has stage 4 melanoma skin cancer. I just want some information I have a 10yr old son and his papaw is his world. The treatment he was doing m,t,w for 6 hrs a day started in august they just stopped said it was not working. Now they just started something he only does on monday. He is scheduled for a brain scan today 11/5.

First – I am sorry to hear about your Dad. Second, as you know there is no stage 5 in cancer, so he is terminal. We are talking months maybe even weeks, not years. If the cancer goes to his brain, your Dad could suffer confusion, and dementia. Not knowing much about his case, I can’t say much more. Right now, some of his confusion just may be related to the shock of his diagnosis and depression. Good Luck

Q&A: I got HIV, Stage 4 Lymphoma Cancer, and Brain Tumor that makes me cough up blood, What is my life expectancy?
Question by : I got HIV, Stage 4 Lymphoma Cancer, and Brain Tumor that makes me cough up blood, What is my life expectancy?
So ive had some pretty crazy symptoms since last July im 22 years old. I was diagnosed with HIV then a month later they found lesions in my lung, liver and colon. My WBC have fallen to like 300 or so which is very low. Ive been coughing up some crazy blood, then they found a tumor in my back and in my head. They told me it was Hodkins Disease related to HIV. My Oncologist tells me that I need to undergo some chemotherapy right away and be on some HIV medications as well. I pretty much came to the conclusion that I have the most feared diseases on this planet and that im pretty much going to die, why undergo chemo when im going to die anyway?? I dont want to suffer anymore in this planet and want to die peacefully.
In the meantime I try to play some b-ball with my niGg@$ and just die happy, is there a put to sleep injection for humans like they have for dogs? . Chemotherapy is hell and im going to die anyway. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? No praying here either, even though im a Christian Im skeptic about miracles and such.
Anyway, physically I can walk and play basketball, do everything a normal 22 year old does. I kill it at the gym still and from the outside I look good but from the inside I feel horrible. Doctors say Im going to be ok and that Im going to be fine, I dont believe them or trust them. What is my life-expectancy and do you have any advice for me?
@What: Everybody knows I have it and my friends know about it.
@Chloesky: I feel its a broken record that they have told many patients before the same thing just to make them feel better. I just dont want to get my hopes up and end up in dissapointment, thats all. Only a miracle can save me but I doubt it.

Whats the life expectancy?
Question by Lisa L: Whats the life expectancy?
A friend was diagnosed with a small cell cancer lesion on her right lung and on her lower lumbar that had reached the bone in 2006. She has been through 3 rounds of Chemotherapy and about 8 moths ago they discovered a lesion on the limpnoid above her right kidney and then a few weeks ago the doctor took her off of treatment saying the latest scan shows all of the cancer active ans no longer responding there is nothing more they can do. I happen to be in town spending the week with her when she calapsed in to a seizure rushed to the hospital where after a MRI they found the Cancer has spread to her brain in 3 areas. My question is yes knowing over all only God knows the exact day we will die medically how much time usually can we expect to have with her?
Best answer:
Answer by luv my pups4ever
I am so sorry to hear about your friend. My prayers go out to you. To answer your question about time, that is unpredictable. A doctor could better answer that but theres no way to medically really know. It would be just a guess. Has anybody ever suggested hospice for your friend? That can be an option for her quality of life. If she so chooses, hospice will provide comfort and the best quality of life for the time she has left in her life. They offer support for patient and family and meet the patients needs in a caring and compassionate way. Maybe check in to it? The hospital could give more information. I intend this suggestion with the utmost sincerity. God bless.

What is the life expectancy of an Alzheimer’s patient with Brain Cancer?
Question by Lulu: What is the life expectancy of an Alzheimer’s patient with Brain Cancer?
My grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 4 years ago. She had previously had breat, cervical, and rectal cancer. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in December. The doctor said it would spread slowly. It has now spread into her brain and bloodstream. We found out today about the brain cancer, so apparently it is not a slow spreading cancer? Approximately how long would she have to live? Anything information that would help would be great! Thank You
The breast, cervical, and rectal cancer are cured. Now is it the lung cancer, brain cancer, and alzheimers disease
Best answer:
Answer by april
If her breast cancer was the first diagnosis, then she probably now has stage 4 breast cancer. Alzheimer’s is terminal and so is stage 4 breast cancer. Nobody knows how long, but I imagine the time is short.
Well the cancer wasn’t cured or it wouldn’t have spread to her brain.

Question by Kira M: I was just wondering how long the life expectancy of liver cancer at the fourth stage was?
My dad was just diagnosed with liver and colon cancer, he just got an operation and removed the colon cancer and he has liver cancer at the fourth stage. He is going through chemotherapy right now and i was wondering what his life expectancy was going to be and what is the worst possible thing that could happen with the chemo, we are figuring he will be on it for roughly 4 months and then a major surgery and then chemo again for another 6months to make sure everything is gone… if all goes well.

Iam sorry to say that the life expectancy is very short. There are complications of chemotherapy but they are unimportant considering the graveness of the situation.
In the hands of a good physician you can rely on the best

If a cure for all known types of cancer was discovered, by how much would life expectancy in increase?
Question by : If a cure for all known types of cancer was discovered, by how much would life expectancy in increase?
I am referring to developed countries which already have a lifespan of 70 or more.
Best answer:
Answer by emmastaf
Interesting question to ponder. I think the current upper limit of natural lifespan is about 120 years. I don’t know statistics about cancer deaths, but I think they are still outweighed by heart disease and stroke as causes of death. Life expectancy factors in all causes of death, including infectious disease and I’m pretty sure accident as well. So I think in the end, curing cancer wouldn’t push life expectancy up all that much. Maybe five years (which actually would be a lot…)?
Summary: I don’t think curing cancer would increase life expectancy drastically.

What is the life expectancy of survivors of brain cancer after surgery?
Question by curious: What is the life expectancy of survivors of brain cancer after surgery?
He had a brain surgery ten years ago, he is still suffering from aftereffects from the surgery, receiving chemotherapeutic treatments and saying that his life expectancy is as half long as healthy people. Is this true?
Best answer:
Answer by Memere RN/BA
Consider him blessed. My brother died of brain cancer…he didn’t have a chance. My sister beat brain cancer 3 times with surgery and did well. It’s been less than 10 yrs for her and she has it again only this time she is terminal. I’d give anything if she could have 10 yrs. So you see, life expectancy is different for everyone. He’s still alive after 10 yrs and still receiving treatments. That means his Dr has hopes. They gave up on my sister. Count your blessings and treasure every day you have with him and not dwell on when he may die. I wish him the best. God bless

life expectancy lower left lobe to be removed?
Question by thecos: life expectancy lower left lobe to be removed?
I am going to have a left Thoracotomy to remove the left lower lobe of my left lung. It is not cancer, but a cyst that was there for years and had gowned to the size of an orange over the last two years. The doctor said he needs to remove the lower left lung that the cyst is attached to. Anyone know the life expectancy for something like this?
Best answer:
Answer by boogeywoogy
Removing only one of the five total lobes of the lungs in no way alters life expectancy. Because the lobe is being removed due to a cyst unrelated to cancer, you’ll be fine. (people actually can have an entire lung removed and do OK.)

Answer by Kelly
No two cancer cases are the same, you really need to speak with your Oncologist and get several opinions. Metastasis to the liver means the Cancer has spread to the liver.
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Sites-Types/metastatic
http://www.uptodate.com/patients/content/topic.do?topicKey=~uySy4hv7M03My
What stage is the Cancer at?
If the Metastasis in the liver can be removed, his cancer can be cured or go into remission. And he can live a long healthy live after-wards. However, the cancer doesn’t always stay in remission.
Has he had Chemotherapy? If so how many rounds and how long was it?
My brothers sister-in-law had colon cancer she was diagnosed around fall of 2004 and found it during testing when she had her gallbladder removed, she had her colon removed and was in chemo for 8 months. At the time I thought that was rather short. They declared her cancer free in July of 2006 and told her it was in remission. A few months later she wasn’t feeling well and they told her she was fine, she didn’t believe her oncologist so she went to the University of Michigan cancer center where she was sent for some of her treatments in the past. They ran various tests on her and found out her cancer never went into remission and had either spread rapidly or she had a new cancer and there was nothing they could do, she died in January of 2007 at 26 with 2 small children. So from the time she was diagnosed until she died was around 2 & 1/2 years.
However, as I mentioned no 2 cancer cases are the same. She had a poor outcome I believe because she had poor treatment and/or care, that doesn’t mean your husband will or that he will die from colon cancer.
Edit: Here is a link to some info on Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Unfortunately at stage 4 it is too widespread usually for surgery to help him usually because there are too many Metastasis or they are too large.
http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/ColonandRectumCancer/DetailedGuide/colorectal-cancer-treating-by-stage-colon
For advanced cancers, radiation therapy may also be used to help prevent or relieve symptoms such as pain. While it may shrink tumors for a time, it is very unlikely to result in a cure. If your doctor recommends radiation therapy, it is important that you understand the goal of treatment
You may want to also check out some cancer support groups, from http://www.cancer.org both for your husband and yourself (and your kids if you have any – even if they are grown). Your friends and family who have not been touched or effected by Cancer will be sympathetc however they wont know what to say or if they should say anything at all to you. The support groups are people with cancer and there are support groups specifically for caregivers/spouses/children of cancer patients and victims. These people willhave similar experiences to you and can likely help you better.
