I’ve removed about 1000 vinyl-asbestos tiles, without keeping them in tact (they were breaking)…
I hear that there is a risk when exposed to any amount of asbestos, but it was a one-time thing that lasted about 10 days…
I don’t know how much asbestos is contained in these tiles and the black adhesive under them, but I’m seriously starting to worry…
Will I be OK, or should I be worrying for the next 10-50 years of my life while an asbestos related illness begins to form?

I’ve been having these symptoms for months …coughing,night sweats,chills,body aches,back aches,less eating,lost 12 lbs in 2 mths without trying.I thought it was because of menopause,drinking more water and exercise.Today I found out that my friend who I see often,kiss hello,eat,talk & laugh with has active tb and had it for 1 year.I work in a school yearround, my mom has a lung disease already. Could I have spread this to all the people I’ve been in contact with? I’m really scared. I will be tested in 5 days when my Dr. returns from vacation.

i started removing the popcorn ceiling in my garage and about 1/4 of the way through i realized the ceiling could have asbestos in it. i removed the ceiling by scraping it so there was a lot of dust inhaled.

Well, that’s debatable, lawyers make hay while the sun shines out of asbestos claims, but at the end of the day, you’re gonna die of something anyway. A better question would be if you were knowingly exposed to it, or how much of it, for how long, are you suffering from it, or were you just in the same zip code as some asbestos, and trying to ride a health claim? Hmmm….

hard telling. i tore off an asbestos roof about 10 yrs ago with no protection (i was young, dumb and working for a shady contractor), took about 3 days and i’m still fine. was there a bunch of dust in the air from the broken tiles?

It can cause mesothelioma later on in life after exposure.
Its a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body,s internal organs.

In 02 I lost a very dear friend to liver cancer. One of the many things she (Estralita Overstreet) taught me was that even during the most adverse and stressful times, there are blessings. Get yourself to a doctor. A one time exposure probably isnt’ a problem; the people who developed conditions like asbestosis and mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos over the course of months and years. If nothing else, the doctor will want to begin a program of monitoring your respiratory system for signs of damage resulting from your exposure.
On the other hand, if you were exposed to a cloud of asbestos dust and didn’t have protection (like a respirator specifically approved for work with asbestos (most off the shelf respirators are not approved for this)) there was definitely negligence on the part of someone, either your employer or the contractor brought on to handle the abatement work. You should talk to a lawyer as well.

I called the DOL because after two experienced people were almost positive it was asbestos. Before I called we went through the proper chain of command we got in contact with the company who did the abatement and they told us they would clean it in the morning here I have been pretty much rolling around in it all day I am kinda curious if I have been exposed. Meanwhile the place we were working is already starting to clean it up the people were untrained janitors. So after a little debate I decided to call The department of Labor who after hearing what I had to say thought it was necessary for him to come and inspect the situation himself ( At Five o clock I am sure he was on his was home soon) So my Boss pretty much told us were were wrong to call them and we should have just let the company handling the abatement deal with it. Am I wrong???

When i was a freshman in college we used to play volleyball in our room knocking the cottage cheese asbestos off of the ceiling. Sometimes the floor would be littered with it. Unfortunately at the time i did not know this was asbestos. We used to do this maybe 3 times a week or so. Id say about half the time our room was ventilated with windows open. I was in this room for 7 months.
So im wondering how concerned should i be about getting lung cancer or Mesothamlimia. Ive read a bunch over the last week that you can get mesothalimia(sry spelling may be wrong) from 1-3 months exposure but theres not figures on how likely you are to get it. Does anyone have any thoughts on my chances of getting Mesothalimia or lung cancer?

Asbestos does not smell, so you were more likely exposed to mold. Even if there was asbestos in the brakes or heat shield, your exposure would not be measurable.

We live in an apartment complex with indoor, non ventilated hallways. We were walking to the bottom floor to the laundry room. we were already in the hallway we noticed the matinince men were taking down ceiling tiles. we had to walk thorugh the whole hallway to get to the laundry room. There was dust and pieces on the floor. The building was built some time between 70 and 80. the ceiling tiles are the rectangle white kind that are commonly used in schools now a days.
also if we may have been exposed, is it enough to worry about? we were in the hallway about 20 seconds. if it spilled in the laundry room (which is closed w/ the a door ) then it would have been more like three or four minutes. thanks

No….your ok. And I highly doubt it was absestos anyways. Ceilings tiles look like that, but trust me, they are fine. If you are worried, get a sample and take it to your local board of health to have it tested. They will be at your city or town hall.

This may be a stupid question…? Recently, there was a problem in my apartment where my heat was not turning off. The radiator is on my ceiling…I woke up this morning to find parts of the ceiling falling down & water dripping all over everything. The landlord came & fixed the heat & its not leaking anymore but i don’t know much about asbestos but I’ve heard its in building materials. Is this a risk? (I’m also pregnant)

Probably not. In order to be hazardous, it has to be floating int he air. Like if you have asbestos in the walls, and someone went at it with a power saw and a load of it ended up in the air. And a single exposure wouldn’t do much. I wouldn’t worry about it.

i worked as a custodian (janitor) for 3 years for a school district. during that time I was on a ladder changing out cieling tiles, buffing floors etc.. then they FINALLY showed us the video about asbestos. I found out the schools i was working ni had asbestos in the becuase of the tiem frame they were built. Would I be exposed from the cieling tiles? a few times dust fell on me from the cieling.
Im not sure but it was old like i think 1920s and yeah some breathing problems but i also used to smoke.
