Q&A: Worried about asbestos exposure?
Question by : Worried about asbestos exposure?
I was taking up tile in my kitchen and I had to pry it up with a tool because some of it was very hard to get off. The pieces were breaking up and and shattering. After I was done I figured out it was asbestos tile. Now I am worried, because I didn’t wear a mask. Plus there is a bunch more in the basement, but I am not going to remove it. Would it be okay to put flooring over top or will it still release fibers? Do you think that the exposure is something i should worry about/ go to a doctor to get checked out? I am a 23 year old female and overall I am healthy. I just don’t want any problems later in life due to this exposure. What do you think?

Answer by badhabyt
The first thing you need to do is put a quarter size piece of the tile in a ziplock. Two or three pieces is better and make sure some of the glue/mastic is on the back. There is no way to tell if it is asbestos other than by lab testing. It will cost you $ 15-$ 30 to be sure. If the tile and glue are not asbestos, you have no worries. Even if one is asbestos, there is nothing you can do. You have been exposed. However, your exposure would not have met any regulatory standards, so there is minimal to no risk. You can inform your Doctor the next time you visit, but there is nothing to do at this point.
Putting flooring on top is problematic as you have no way to attach it. If you glue it to the tile, then it becomes part of the tile and if the tile is asbestos, the new flooring would not be asbestos under regulations since they will come up together. It would be better, if asbestos, to have it professionally removed.

i have been sleeping in my new room for a bout 3 months now and when i wake up my throat is a little sore and it can be hard to swallow, but it goes away after i drink a little water. And it doesnt happen until night. My house was built in 1925 and there are a couple holes in my walls with white-like dry wall type stuff around the studs. I put up Cardboard and posters over the holes but could this be asbestos? or am i just paranoid? My bed is next to a heater vent and i hear this could cause a sore throat from dust and stuff. Q&A: I’ve learned about the dangers of asbestos exposure. Should I have the asbestos removed from my home?
Question by : I’ve learned about the dangers of asbestos exposure. Should I have the asbestos removed from my home?
I have small children and recently learned that there is probably asbestos in the ceilings of our family home. I’m worried about the health implications for my kids after spending years in this house.

Answer by James
It’s probably best to leave it undisturbed. Removing it will be extremely expensive, and releases it into the air. Leave it alone, and it’s probably never going to be in contact with you.

fourteen months of asbestos exposure?
Question by : fourteen months of asbestos exposure?
my man and i lived in a rental house for a little over a year before we moved into our new house. after a few months of living there we started waking up wheezing and short of breath. we thought it was mold, as the basement often flooded. the landlords did not listen to our complaints, but it took us a while to find a house and move. from the first night in the new home our breathing was easier. we ran into the man that had bought the house we were renting, and he told us that he tore out the ceilings and found loads of old, rotting asbestos insulation. is that more likely to be what was causing our breathing problems? how likely are we to have problems in the future? should we see a doc now? do i have any legal rights?

what level of asbestos exposure is dangerous?
Question by : what level of asbestos exposure is dangerous?
When i was younger my parents used to take me to a playgroup in an old army base that was no longer used. me and my brother used to go and explore the buildings and one of them i remember having broken roof tiles and as we were young thought it would be fun to throw them around stupidly. what i want to know is would this be long enough to be exposed to it as most articles state that you need to be around asbestos for several months for it to pose a risk. please don’t reply with well you shouldn’t have been doing that i was a kid and stupid i understand that just want to know whether i will be at risk or not this was around 20 years ago.
Best answer:
Answer by Jeremy
I would think you’ll be ok. Asbestos has to be disturbed to be a problem. Im sure you guys were making a fair share of dust with those roof tiles but its not like you spent 40hrs a week in it. I would say that you’ll be fine. Check out this site and read through the exposure parts.
