What profession do I look into if I want to find a cure for cancer?
Question by Evan B: What profession do I look into if I want to find a cure for cancer?
Okay. I am now a senior in high school and a sophmore in college. I do not know what to look into as far as careers but I know I want my career objective to deal with cancer. I really would like to find a cure for cancer. I was looking at somethings and kind of saw it might be pharmacology and become a pharmacologist. Is this correct? If not, what career path should I take?

Can anyone help me discover if I can find a new lung for my dad?
Question by Melodie U: Can anyone help me discover if I can find a new lung for my dad?
Hello! My dad has had pulmonary fibrosis for several years now and is on oxygen 24/7. He is 84 years old and is WWII vet. He was also told he acquired this while in the navy in WWII having been exposed to asbestos alot. He has gotten alot of veterans assistance and is still receiving it as needed. He has expressed an interested in obtaining a new lung, but has been told he is too old for the procedure. He is very willing to pay for it himself. I would really love to help him find a solution to this so that he live longer, his condition is getting worse. He has young grandchildren that I would love it if he could see them all graduate from HS. I’m sure even an artificial lung would be acceptable, anything to help him get his air. That is his only trouble, he is doing quite well otherwise and enjoys visits from family and friends. I do not understand how someone can reject him only because of the fact that he is “too old” if it truly could help him get several more happy years in with family and friends. I am trying to figure out where to even start to try to discover if I really can find a lung for him. All he needs is one, that would be enough to help him get his air way better. I am also open minded to an artificial lung. Any help you can give me as to where to start would be highly appreciated. Thank You!
Best answer:
Answer by Jem
This sounds awful I know – but he is already over the average life expectancy which is why they have said no. As there is a long donor waiting list, that lung that you want them to give your dad could be used to save a teenagers/child’s life. Your dad has lived 84 long happy years and has a wealth of experiences he can look back on and be happy for. Someone else may have had just 16 years and desperately needs that lung for a chance to live a life like your dad’s. There is not an endless supply of real lungs and the operation needed to give him an artificial lung could kill him. Unfortunately it is just one of those things that happens in life and he has done extremely well to get as far as he did. My grandad died last year aged 77 and my grandma at 71 – so he has already outlived two healthy adults. Nothing you can do will change the doctors minds as it is too high of a risk for him to have the operation for an artificial lung, and even if he got a real one it wouldn’t have long to live for.

My dad is overweight with a serious medical condition. Can you help me find a hospital with a petscan?
Question by Kate: My dad is overweight with a serious medical condition. Can you help me find a hospital with a petscan?
My dad had colon cancer 4 years ago but was told by the doctors that he was clear of it after they removed 1/3rd of his colon. In the past month, they have discovered that the cancer spread to his lung. The doctors said that it is incredibly unlikely that it would spread from his colon to his lung directly without first infecting something else. He is in desperate need of a pet scan. This procedure will immediately tell the doctors if and where there are any more cancer cells. Unfortunately, my dad is obsese, weighing in at 498 lbs. He has only been able to find hospitals that can accomodate a 450 lb. person on the petscan table. It seems unconstitutional that anyone should be turned away from life-saving medical care because they are obese. I need to help him find a hospital that can accomodate someone of his size.
Best answer:
Answer by arielsalom33
well, that is unfortunate that your having a hard time finding a PET scan big enough for your dad. Im not sure if there is one that will accomodate him, but I work at Barnes Jewish hospital in St. Louis, MO. It is the number 8 hospital in the nation, and I think it would be worth while to look into it. They may have something to offer him. Good luck.

Where can I find most current, most accurate breast cancer treatment recommendations?
Question by : Where can I find most current, most accurate breast cancer treatment recommendations?
I am simply overwhelmed trying to decide who to listen to regarding treatment recommendations for lobular cell carcinoma in situ. I hear different things from various people involved in the hospital breast care center. Also, would anyone out there be OK with a Resident Physician doing their surgery for LCIS? I’m still not clear what it is they want to do. Sounds like a lumpectomy but who knows and I wonder why the Resident would be doing it and not a fully trained surgeon (could be a lost my health insurance in the midst of all this mess). Why are some doctors saying bilateral mastectomy if the lumpectomy is OK? Bilateral mastectomy if I DON’T have cancer? What are they going to do if I DO have cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by Susie Q
Breastcancer.org is a good site to go to for information.
I had DCIS, my oncologist recommended this site to me.
If this a resident doctor performing the surgery , you can guarantee there will be a fully
trained surgical oncologist in the room when this resident performs surgery.
Patients have bilateral mastectomy because of bilateral positive biopsy.
lumpectomies are performed on a patient as a breast preserving therapy.
This strives to preserve the breast appearance by removing only a portion of it.
Depending on what your results are will decide what course of action the doctor.
will take.

Where can find a gal like oklahoma teen mom folk hero Sarah McKinley ?
Question by : Where can find a gal like oklahoma teen mom folk hero Sarah McKinley ?
That girl Sarah McKinley of Oklahoma is totally hot, I’d love to find a tough-as-nails mama grizzly type like her.
Seriously. She looks super cute in her pictures posing with a shotgun right? Especially after she shot that intruder on New Years day to protect her baby and keep from getting raped by drug crazed meth heads. Not only does she look super cute in all her photos, with a pouty mouth and a pretty face too, but she has what looks to be a great body for an 18 year old who just had a baby 3 month ago, and she’s cool, calm and collected in her interviews. What a catch.
Best of all, she’s obviously into older guys, I mean, her husband who passed away from lung cancer on Christmas day was 58 years old, and the news says they had been living together for three years. She’s only just now 18 right? Wow. Dating and marrying a guy who’s 40 years older than her when she’s a teenager. How is that not totally hot?
Please tell me I’m not the only red-blooded American man who finds this girl drop dead sexy?!

Answer by In Science we trust
There isn’t one field that studies potential cures for diseases. There are several areas of study that could find a cure for a given disease. Molecular biology, cell biology, virology, oncology, immunology are among many fields where one could work on cures. These are specialized areas of biology and medicine.

Diablo Valley Oncology Supports Tobacco Tax PLEASANT HILL, CA (February 1, 2012) — Diablo Valley Oncology (DVO) announced today its endorsement of the California Cancer Research Act (CCRA)-Proposition 29, a statewide ballot initiative that, if passed, would generate funds for cancer research in the state as well as tobacco prevention and cessation programs through a new a -per-pack state tax on cigarettes. DVO joins a coalition of groups — co-chaired by LIVESTRONG founder Lance Armstrong and former State Senator Don Perata, and including the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Stand Up To Cancer, and others — working on CCRA, which could direct almost 0 million a year into research on cancer and tobacco-related illnesses. “Medical research is very expensive,” said Matthew Sirott, MD, an Oncologist and CEO of Diablo Valley Oncology. “The CCRA will provide a much-needed source of funds for researchers working on all types of cigarette related cancers. Plus, the dollars will stay in California.” said Sirott. More than 140000 Californians will be diagnosed with cancer this year — 16 cases every hour — and more than 54000 will die from it. The goal of the Diablo Valley Oncology is to change those dire odds by accelerating critical cancer research that will get new treatments to patients quickly and save lives. “The CCRA plan for funding cancer research makes sense,” said Sandy Goldberg …

____________ :The hazards of smoking
This is the essay. Warning everything on here is not real. It’s a “Fake Essay”
“Smoking is a very hazardous habit. It is actually the most dangerous legal consumer product on the face of this planet.” Dr. Melbourne Fox, Director of American Lung Association (Melbourne 25).
In this generation, smokers are everywhere: on TV, movies, and even just walking down the street. Famous, young people smoke and it encourages other younger people to do. Smoking ages range from pre-teens to the elderly. What many people don’t know that that even though it may be cool and hip, it can cause serious problems for them. Smoking is well known to cause many unhealthy habits in people’s lives and even affect peoples’ mental and physical health. Smoking can cause serious health issues. It hurts people besides the smoker. Also, it can cause addiction. Although many smokers claim that smoking helps them, there are many more cons that out-weigh the pros.
Smoking can cause lots of different health problems. In the book, Health Effects of Smoking, by Dr. Carey Melbourne, writes, “Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases” (Melbourne 5). Smoking hurts the body, so in general, it deteriorates the smoker’s health. As a result, the smoker ends up with diseases. Dr. William deGraffenried, a researcher, writes about this in his article, “Why Smoke?” He writes, “Smoking causes cancers of the bladders, pharynx, larynx, and lungs. It also causes serious heart and respiratory diseases” (deGraffenried 9). Studies show that people that had smoked or are smoking, had at least one chronic disease. These diseases can be very harmful to the human body and can even result in death. Now that we know what smoking can do to a smoker’s body, let’s see what it can do to others.
Secondhand smoke can be harmful in its own way. It is very dangerous to expose anybody to secondhand smoke. Melbourne writes, “The more secondhand smoke humans are exposed to, the higher the level of these harmful chemicals in your body” (Melbourne 12). Even if a non-smoker does not smoke, just being around smoke can be hazardous to ones’ health. Parents have to be on watch when they smoke. Any type of exposure to their children can be harmful. DeGraffenried writes, “Secondhand smoke is responsible for 20,000 to 1 million children for having asthma attacks and 150,000 to 300,000 infants that are younger than 18 months of age to have lung infection (such as pneumonia and bronchitis)” (deGraffenried 15). Pregnant woman should also be aware of what is around them. Any type of smoke can cause their babies to have low birth weight or can even cause SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Secondhand smoke is really serious and the effects are preposterous. Nonsmokers should be aware and try to avoid it. We should now take a look at another bad habit of smoking, addiction.
Addiction is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. This state is as much a threat as anything. Nicotine is found in substantial amounts in all forms of tobacco. Nicotine is a substance that can become addicting for the human body. Once inhaled it reaches the brain within seconds. Melbourne writes about the effect: “ As the nicotine level drops in the blood, smokers feel edgy and agitated–the start of nicotine withdrawal. So in order to relieve the discomforts, the smoker light up another cigarette…then another…and another” (Melbourne 3). As a result the smokers wants more to satisfy their need and end up becoming addicted to it. Melbourne writes, “Although 70% of smokers want to quit and more than 40% try to quit each year, fewer than 5% succeed” (Melbourne 6). This happens because smokers are not only physically addicted to it, they are emotionally linked to it. This trait makes it harder for smokers to break the habit.
Even with all the awful things that smoking can do to our bodies, there are still people that think the opposite. Smokers claim that smoking is not bad for them at all, on the contrary it is good for them. Smoker, Gabriella Dominguez, states,” By smoking I feel relief from all the stress that I have. It helps me relax and lets me focus more.” Dr. Lana Cain, on her website Benefitsofsmoking.com writes, “Smoking burns up an extra 300 calories each day. This method is really good and to stop using it would cause a huge gain of obese people in America”. But is it really worth the risk of getting a fatal disease? While this may be true for the smoker, nonsmokers have different views. The risk of getting sick or hurting others may be more important than relaxing or losing weight..
With so many sickness caused by smoking, the risk of hurting others, and the risk of addiction, it is easy to see why many people do not smoke. Also the ability to cause cancer, low birth weight, and the way smokers depend on it is not a very attractable impression either.

How can my family find closure and move on after our father’s death? Sad story :(?
Question by zzzzzzzzzzzIM…ASLEEPzzzzzzzzzz: How can my family find closure and move on after our father’s death? Sad story
?
My family was always full of love. My story starts off like this… My father is a hard working laborer and he started off life living on a farm. With everyday being a task, it seems as though it has followed him all through his life. My father has always treated my family with love and care. God is always in his life. He is loved by us all. I was 16 years old, the day my family found out my father had lung cancer. Its a fatal disease of course. As the months had gone by, I would notice his body start to weaken and look thinner as it was eating his muscles. But to my family – we have faith, and we feel it can conquer anything. So we prayed… the doctors said my father would not last 6 months. That had passed and he is still alive. After visiting the doctors again , we found the cancer was diminishing… a miracle to the doctors. They had never seen anyone in his condition last as long as he did. So they felt a break from the treatments would help his body recuperate since the chemo treatments were killing him more than the cancer was. We returned 3 months later to find the cancer had returned with full force, but not only covering his lungs, but also speckling his spine. After returning to the treatments, it wasn’t but another 10 months before it entered his liver – a vital organ. During this time the doctor was giving him less than a couple weeks. We couldn’t believe them, after all that was my dad – Mr. Invincible. However within a couple weeks, he started to say things that wouldn’t make sense I could slowly see him leaving my family unwillingly. It was very hard for me, and I could not bare to go into his room to see him – not even to say goodbye. After all we still had faith… It was 2 days before Father’s Day (1 month later)at this point he was in the hospital. I sat at his side watching TV on how ice cream is made, talking with him like a normal day. However, I couldn’t tell him how I feel, and how much I love him. It was too hard… He was gone within the next hour. There was no chance to turn back and say goodbye now. With all the extra time God had given me, I still could not manage to express how I felt. With a family full of love, a time now full of sadness, and a great loss. The times that were, are no longer – we are now lost without you. The ache is unbarable, but I know I will see you again one day. But for now… Rest in peace, Dad… And what I meant to say was: I Love You so Much!

I am so sorry to hear this…This touched me so much, and made me appreciate life so much more. I can’t explain how much I sympathize with you. I’m not a “soft” guy, but this really got to me and got me thinking. Look at it this way. Your father lived an amazing life, and he sounds like a man people admired. He will always be your father, alive or not. We can’t change the past, but only make the future better. Live up to his name, as I am sure your capable. You sound like an amazing individual, and may god bless you.
