Five ways soda is killing you!
www.newsmaxhealth.com Just 100 years ago, the obesity rate in the United States was less than 5 percent. Now, about two-thirds of adults — more than 190 million Americans — are overweight or obese. What’s the difference? Many experts believe it’s the amount of sugar in our diets, especially the huge amounts of sugar Americans consume each day in the form of soft drinks — often called liquid candy. Here’s a breakdown of five main ways soda is killing you: Obesity. Sweetened drinks are the only specific food that clinical research has directly linked to weight gain,” says Harvard endocrinologist Dr. David Ludwig. “Highly concentrated starches and sugars promote overeating, and the granddaddy of them all is sugar-sweetened beverages,” Ludwig told CNN. The sugar provides huge amounts of calories, but also creates a vicious cycle. “It’s rapidly absorbed, which raises blood sugar and in effect causes the body to panic,” Ludwig said. When the body releases insulin to metabolize the sugar, blood sugar drops. The body responds by releasing a hormone called ghrelin, which causes hunger and provokes us to eat even more.” A study from UCLA found that people who drank at least one soda a day increased their risk of being overweight by 27 percent when compared to those who didn’t drink sodas. ALERT: Stop Your Sugar Addiction With These 4 Tips A direct correlation can be seen in California between the rise in the size of an average soda and an increase in obesity. For instance, the …

My Brother has cancer in five places in his body he is in hospice how long will he live?
Question by bunny214@verizon.net: My Brother has cancer in five places in his body he is in hospice how long will he live?
My brother has lung cancer and pancreatic cancer, spine, skin. How long will he live .He is in Hospice now.
Best answer:
Answer by Jimmy Bennett
Well it depends on his body and his fighting will.. but most off the will TO survive.. but anyway
the body will give out before the body .. so it can be 1 day – months to years.. its possible
even if he is in stage 4 now.. depending on what treatments he’s gotten and what state he is in .. the cancer is still curable by means of alternative medicine..
Cancer is actually a microbe that is inside a cell and on the out side. This microbes lives in cells that lack an oxygenated state. Which means the Microbe can be killed with oxygen. *yeah i know its hard to believe but as you know or would like to know that Organized Medicine is there for money and profits and not really the truth.. Don’t blame your doctors always, cause they were trained and somewhat brainwashed to selling drugs and things that hurt you. Chemo for example can work but side effects are simple, they kill the good cells.. you don’t want to do this.
YOu have to attack the microbe it self then once that is done the cell it self will heal back to normal in 2 weeks to a up to a year or so depending on the area affected.
depending how open you are .. you can contact me on yahoo answers if your interested in the alternative approach to fixing your brother, its up to you .. If he does go or your family decides it.. hope he goes without pain..

Mesothelioma Patients Can Survive Past Five Years Â
Mesothelioma Patients Can Survive Past Five Years Â
Article by Agatha Simona
Mesothelioma, the rare but deadly cancer of the mesothelium caused by asbestos exposure, is often fatal within a year of diagnosis. But thanks to better diagnostic tools, including the use of some newly-identified biomarkers to identify those at highest risk, some patients do survive this cancer for five years or more.If pleural effusion is suspected, then confirmation needs to be established with a chest x-ray. Ultrasound is also helpful in locating small amounts or collections of isolated pockets of fluid. Chest CT is also used and is very helpful in distinguishing between parenchymal and pleural disease. Chest CT will help to show pleural thickening, pleural based mass, loculecollections of fluid, or pleural calcification.
Statistics from the National Cancer Institute indicate that 7.3 percent of people diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1999 and 2006 were likely to be alive five years later. People who are younger than 65 at the time of diagnosis have the greatest chance of making it at least five years – 14.8 percent. The latest National Cancer Institute prevalence figures say 2,774 people were diagnosed with mesothelioma between 2000 and 2006. At that time, 4,194 people were living with the disease.
Due to the long latency between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma, it can take as long as 40 or 50 years for symptoms to develop. When they do develop, they may mimic symptoms of other conditions, delaying diagnosis further. By the time some patients are diagnosed, it may be too late for even aggressive intervention to positively impact survival rates.
New diagnostic markers are needed to both detect mesothelioma and identify those mesothelioma patients that have the best chance of getting value from existing therapies. A new study conducted at New York University’s Langone Medical Center suggests a genetic marker inside tumor cells may help identify patients who are most likely to respond well to treatment of the pleural (lung-based) form of mesothelioma.
Researchers conducted the study on 142 patients who had had surgery for their mesothelioma. In those with highest levels of the marker, known as miR-29c, the survival period was as much as four times higher than for those with the lower levels. With treatment, those with higher MiR-29c had a median survival rate of 32 months. Study Director Dr. Harvey Pass says the results may prompt physicians to be more aggressive with treatment in those with the worst prognosis.

Five Types of Breathing Machines Â
Five Types of Breathing Machines Â
Article by Jessie Flesner
Breathing machines are used to help deliver oxygen to a person’s lungs when his or her own respiratory system fails in some way. The development of breathing machines and the technology behind them has made all kinds of things possible that once weren’t. They also save lives every single day.
Any mechanical device that aids in breathing can be considered a breathing machine. Five major kinds of breathing machines exist. They are:
1) The asthma nebulizer: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway. It has no known cause, but may be related to genetics or to pollutants in the air. A person may develop it if their mother smoked during pregnancy.
A person may develop it at any point in life, from childhood to senior citizen age. It may be mild to severe, may seem to come and go, and may be a minor nuisance or a life-altering condition.
A person with asthma has problems getting oxygen to the furthest points in his/her lungs. This is due to either inflammation of airways (“bronchi,” the tubes that deliver oxygen to the lungs) or to spasms in the muscles surrounding the airways, or both.
Mild to moderate asthma can usually be treated with an asthma inhaler. More severe cases may require the occasional or regular use of an asthma nebulizer. This is a type of breathing machine that helps an asthma sufferer get more oxygen to his or her lungs.
The nebulizer consists of a tank or chamber filled with medicine. The nebulizer concentrates the liquid into a mist and pushes it through a tube with a breathing mask on the end.
The user places the mask over his/her mouth and nose and inhales the medicine. The medicine opens up constricted airways and calms muscle spasms so that oxygen flow to the lungs isn’t restricted.
2) The C-PAP: This breathing machine is used to treat people who suffer from sleep apnea. This is a dangerous condition in which a person’s breathing actually pauses during sleep, due to sluggish airways that close up during sleep.
It may stop for a second or two up to a minute or more. This may occur one, two, several or up to 30 times in one hour of sleep.
Pauses in breathing mean that crucial oxygen isn’t getting to the lungs. The longer and more frequently this happens, the more damage can be done to the body.
Sleep apnea can also be disruptive enough to cause a sufferer to be chronically tired during the day. A long enough pause in breathing may even result in death, heart attack or brain damage.
C-PAP (for “continuous positive airway pressure”) breathing machines deliver mild air pressure to the airways via a mask worn over the nose and mouth during sleep. The mask is attached to a tube leading to a device which blows pressurized air through the tube to the mask and into the users mouth/nose. The air blows the airways open so that oxygen can get through in a manner more like normal, daytime breathing.
3) The Bi-PAP: Bi-PAP breathing machines are similar in design to C-PAPs and are also used to treat very severe cases of sleep apnea. The major difference between C-PAP breathing machines and Bi-PAPs is that C-PAPs rely on the user to exhale against the extra pressure delivered by the device.
Some sufferers cannot do this. This may be due to being excessively overweight, or with neuro-muscular conditions that prevent it. In cases like these, a Bi-PAP machine must be used.
4) The respirator: This is a device that helps people with chronic lung conditions, very severe asthma or bronchitis to get oxygen to the lungs. The respirator has a chamber containing pure oxygen and a water bottle for humidifying the oxygen. All of this is delivered to a user through a tube attached to a mask.
Respirators come in different sizes, and can be used in a hospital or at home. Travel-size versions are even available for use in an automobile.
5) The oxygen concentrator: This device is similar to a respirator. The main difference is that it delivers a much higher concentration of oxygen to the body.
It may transmit this oxygen via a mask, like a respirator or other breathing machine. It may also deliver oxygen via a cannula, or tubes which are inserted into the nostrils.
These types of breathing machines are used to treat severe cases of chronic lung diseases (cancer, COPD). It may also be used to treat sleep apnea that is due to chronic lung disease or neuro-muscular conditions.
Breathing machines can be purchased at medical surgical supplies stores or through online medical surgical equipment suppliers.

Q&A: What are the top five IP law firms in the Seattle area to work as a biotech patent agent?
Question by Handsome Devil: What are the top five IP law firms in the Seattle area to work as a biotech patent agent?
I am looking to relocate to the west coast and am investigating Seattle and various California cities. I am a registered patent agent (4 yrs ago) with a BS in biochemistry, and a very strong background in sequence listings and sequence searching. I have worked for an international bioinformatics company. I am currently working as an IP legal assistant for attorneys for a large Boston law firm and thus am quite familiar with patent prosecution. I am looking to do patent work such as sequence listings, sequence searching, sequence analysis, patentability searches (have done those), and patent prosecution.
I am aware Seed is a top firm in this regard.

Answer by KH
Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe (HEWM) in the San Francisco headquarters has a huge IP dept. with many IP attorneys in their other branches (Seattle being one), though not as many. The San Diego branch, though smaller, is made up of a lot of IP attys b/c of the huge biotech boom there. Seattle had more environmental attys than anything (seems to be the trend for the whole state), but still had IP attys there. HEWM is well known as a 1st class firm within all the CA atty’s I’ve talked to, evoking an ooh and ahh about the firm.

Answer by Chris S
Hmmm…Interesting situation. You would have to check with the local building inspector and zoning laws. If the soil is considered contaminated, depending on the size, you will have to consider the cost to you if the laws change and you need to remedy the situation before you sell the house. For example, where I am from in Massachusetts, before my friend, an auto mechanic, could sell his business property, he had to remove 30 tons of earth (approximately 3 triaxle trucks) at an expense of $ 75K.

Five Most Commons STD’s Plus Common Penis Problems Â
Five Most Commons STD’s Plus Common Penis Problems Â
Article by John Dugan
At one time or another, most men experience some degree of penile itching, penis redness, sore penis and penis rash. These common penis problems are often the result of rough masturbation or aggressive sex, which can create microscopic cracks or breaks in dry penis skin. These cracks allow bacteria and other contaminants to bypass the skin’s protective dermal outer layer, leading to bacterial or fungal infections that case the unpleasant symptoms detailed above . A simple solution is to avoid dry penis skin by applying a moisturizer or penis health crème that contains the antibacterial Vitamin A (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil).
However, penis problems such as those mentioned above that do not clear up on their own after a few days may also be linked to a sexually transmitted disease. Although most STD’s are easily avoided with the proper precautions, the fact is that they are still highly prevalent among sexually active individuals. For those who have come in contact with an STD, early detection is important in order to avoid long-term (and potentially life-threatening) complications. The five most common STD’s are listed below, along with their symptoms and most effective treatment options.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
HPV is caused by a common virus that can be found virtually everywhere; most people will come in contact with some form of HPV at least once during the course of their lifetime. While many people never develop any symptoms, it is highly contagious and easily passed between sexual partners.
Symptoms
The most easily-identifiable symptoms of HPV are warts which appear in the genital and anal regions. While they are not generally painful, these hard bumps are unpleasant in appearance and may cause discomfort during intercourse. In addition, HPV has been linked to cervical and genital cancers.
Treatment
Once an individual has contracted HPV, there is no known cure, although the warts may eventually disappear on their own. For most people, the best option is to avoid infection by receiving the HPV vaccine, which has been shown to protect against life-threatening cancers linked to the virus.
Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is a highly contagious viral STD which can be transmitted from one partner to another even when no symptoms are present.
Symptoms
Genital herpes presents in most individuals as painful, blistering sores in the genital and anal areas and around the mouth.
Treatment
There is no known cure for herpes once an individual has contracted the disease, although flare-ups may be controlled through the use of oral or topical medications. Again, this common STD can be easily passed to a partner, even when there are no visible symptoms.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a highly common bacterial infection which is readily transmitted through sexual contact. This infection can affect the reproductive organs and urinary tract and may lead to serious complications if left untreated.
Symptoms
Symptoms of chlamydia include a greenish or whitish discharge, fever, painful urination, abdominal pain, and painful intercourse. Itching and burning in the genital area may also occur.
Treatment
Unlike genital herpes and HPV, chlamydia can be successfully treated through a course of antibiotics.
Gonorrhea
Also known as “the clap,” gonorrhea is a bacterial infection and often occurs simultaneously with chlamydia.
Symptoms
Gonorrhea may cause fever, swollen glands, sore throat, itching and burning in the genital area, and a white, greenish or yellow discharge.
Treatment
Gonorrhea can be treated through the use of antibiotics; it is important that both sexual partners are treated for the infection, as it can be passed back and forth through sexual contact even after treatment.
Syphilis
Like gonorrhea and chlamydia, syphilis is a bacterial infection; however, it can be much more serious if left untreated and lead to lifelong complications.
Symptoms
In the initial stages of the disease, syphilis generally presents as a rash or soreness in the genital area. As it progresses, it can cause fever, headache and swollen glands; untreated syphilis may eventually lead to nervous system damage, bone damage, and loss of nerve function. In later stages, dementia, paralysis and death can be the end result.
Treatment
Fortunately, if detected, syphilis can be treated using penicillin or other common antibiotics; those with symptoms of this or any other sexually transmitted disease should seek treatment as soon as possible to avoid long-term health problems.
Keeping Your Penis Healthy
The best way to prevent penis problems is to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding the use of tobacco products; it is also important to choose sexual partners with care. In addition, it is suggested that a penis health crème, (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) containing penis-specific vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients be used daily to moisturize the skin and protect the penis from bacterial or fungal infections and environmental contaminants that may lead to more serious penis health issues.

five survival rate for lung cancer?
Question by jm3232@sbcglobal.net: five survival rate for lung cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by teraflop
Five-year, you mean?
It’s tough to come by, but it is somewhere between 5-10%. This is because we lose about half of lung cancer victims in the first year. And another big loss the second year. Generally if you can make it into the third year, you’re doing well.
Survival does depend on which Stage of the diagnosis and type. NSCLC (Non-Small Cell) is generally slower than SCLC (Small Cell). And it depends on degree and type of metastasis, if any. Of course, survival depends on treatment and a variety of factors, from diet, insurance, support, and attitude.

Five Celebrity Women that Coped with Breast Cancer Â
Five Celebrity Women that Coped with Breast Cancer Â
Article by Sachin Kumar Airan
Celebrities and everyday people suffer from breast cancer. The only difference is that celebrities have the power and money to receive the newest and best treatment. Not to mention they have the means to try alternative medicine. So let’s take a look at celebrity women and how they coped with fighting breast cancer.
Cynthia Nixon: This star from the show Sex and the City didnÂ’t want to reveal the fact that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she undergoing treatment she didnÂ’t tell the press or reveal it to the public because she didnÂ’t want to deal with paparazzi while she was have her treatments. She went through a lumpectomy and regular radiation treatments. Nixon wasnÂ’t the first in her family to have to cope with breast cancer her mother also fought against breast cancer as well. After Nixon went through all her treatments she decided that she could help other women cope and be an inspiration for women around the world. Nixon is now the ambassador for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Sheryl Crow: Crow went in for a routine mammogram and they detected calcification in both of her breasts. When she found out what she was fighting she put her musical career on hold and immediately had surgery to remove the lumps and went into intensive radiation. While doing her radiation she also did acupuncture to relieve some of her pain and drank herbal teas. After her treatments were done she then went and petitioned congress to fund a research project that searched for possible links between breast cancer and environmental factors.
Edie Falco: When Falco was diagnosed with breast cancer she didnÂ’t tell a single soul, she says that she didnÂ’t want to feel anyoneÂ’s pity. She didnÂ’t tell anyone that she had cancer until after she went through all the intensive treatments. She is now in remission.
Kylie Minogue: Kylie went in for a routine checkup and was misdiagnosed, they said that she was fine, but she wasnÂ’t convinced and went back in to have a second opinion and they found a lump on her right breast. She then had a partial mastectomy, radiation and an intensive round of chemotherapy. She now tells all women that they should follow their instincts over what they hear from the doctor.
Elizabeth Edwards: Edwards is the former wife of John Edwards, which was a presidential candidate. She hadnÂ’t had a mammogram in four years, until she discovered a large lump on her right breast and when she went in to have it checked it turned out to be cancerous. When she went through surgery and chemotherapy along with radiation, her doctors thought that she was cancer free until they found that the cancer spread to her ribs, hips and lungs, she lost her battle with cancer in 2010.
Taking a look out how the celebrities deal with having breast cancer really is no different than how everyday people cope. The only significant difference is that they have the power and money to help other women cope with the same disease.

Five Ways to Deal With a Mesothelioma Diagnosis Â
Five Ways to Deal With a Mesothelioma Diagnosis Â
Article by Jason Lee
Let’s say you or someone you love has received a mesothelioma diagnosis. For all the people around you, one of the toughest things is dealing with the diagnosis, and the often difficult medical procedures.
By its very nature, mesothelioma is often detected very late, and this can make the entire process much more difficult. If you or your family are coping with this particular cancer, here are five things to keep in mind when things get tough.
#5: Go Ahead, Ask Questions
You should ask any question you need to — it’s obligatory for any doctor to answer whatever you ask, and the more information you can receive, the better you can respond to the mesothelioma.
#4: It’s OK to Keep Things Private
After a diagnosis, speaking about the disease with your family is normal. Your family is always your most important support while going through the treatment process, and while telling them about it is always tough, it’s necessary.
#3: Use the Resources Out There
Your family should do the same, as there are many organizations who help family deal with the pain, stress, and anxiety of cancer diagnosis and treatment in a close relative.
#2: Nothing Wrong With Alternative Methods
Although we suggest you stick to the official medical options when it comes to the fundamental treatment of your mesothelioma, when you need to treat the pain, stress, and anxiety that come from both the diagnosis and the treatment itself, take a look at some alternative therapies. Even as a placebo effect they are quite useful, and are worth checking out.
#1: Don’t Be Afraid of Professional Help
There are times when it’s just too hard to discuss your experience with people in your family. And the same applies to the family, too — it’s hard for them to talk to you. So sometimes, it’s necessary to seek some professional help, which can give you that outlet that your family doesn’t always need to provide.

Paul Desmond – Take Five 1976 Live

Paul Desmond (November 25, 1924 — May 30, 1977), born Paul Emil Breitenfeld, was a jazz alto saxophonist and composer born in San Francisco, best known for the work he did in the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for penning that group’s greatest hit, “Take Five”. He was not only one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast’s “cool jazz” scene, but also the possessor of a legendary and idiosyncratic wit. In addition to his work with Brubeck he led several of his own groups and did significant collaborations with artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and Chet Baker. After years of chain smoking and general poor health, Desmond succumbed to lung cancer in 1977 following one last tour with Brubeck. Best Version of Take Five
