The Garden Bushwick Brooklyn, NY Urban Farming
The video is a time laps of our back yard in Brooklyn. We moved into a ground floor apartment with access to the back yard. We had a few weeks of cleaning up the space and a whole summer of fresh vegetables. We decided to use 8” raised beds since the soil was not the cleanest. We had lots of composted soil that we made at our last apartment where we had a roof to garden and took that with us to our new space. We also added some manure and vermiculite to the composted soil we made and the occasional bag of dirt from my parents back yard leave pile. It was allot of work but well worth it.

The Garden Planting Season Comes! Â
The Garden Planting Season Comes! Â
Article by Olivia Tong
Spring is the best season for sowing. And the Garden could be well prepared, and waiting for the arrival of spring. There are plentiful things you should to do before planting, just as work the soil, clean garden tools and buy seeds. Those would help you a lot as spring comes.
Working and Adding Amendments to the Soil:
Before you begin to plant; you can do lots of activities in the garden. Working the soil is a quite necessary operation. If the soil is too wet then you should not work it at that time, since the growing process may be stunting by it. Accordingly, you need to do the soil test first. Grabbing a fistful of soil, and squeeze is a simple way to test. After you squeezed and most of the soil keep stay in the ball shape, and then you just have to wait a bit before work it. Only if most of the soil shatters, then it’s the right time to work it.
Compost, fertilizer, moisture retaining compounds such as vermiculite or perlite, sand and peat are the general amendments. Since not all soils are perfect for plant, then you may add amendments such as nutrients to them. And the proper time to do so is early spring. The soil must not be too acidic or too alkaline, since a neutral PH soil was preferred by the major plants. If the soil is over alkaline then you should add some acidity to balance it. On the opposite, if it’s over acidic, in order to balance it you need to increase the alkalinity. The soil kit can help you to measure PH to point which amendments are in need so as to make the soil more balanced.
Tools cleaning:
Tools also act as an important role in your garden plantingand it also needs to be cleaned completely every season. That will not only help remove the residual dirt on the tool, but also will extent the tool’s life. Whether your tools need temperate soft cleaning or massive cleaning, there are different ways to handle it. The former needs a mild detergent and if you clean it in a warm day, it can clean the tools definitely. And there are plenty of tools you can use to wash it. You can put the tools in water about fifteen minutes and then wash down them, if you don’t tend to put in bleach. Do it again if need be. And finally make sure the tools are dried thoroughly.
Seeds purchasing:
You needn’t to worry about too early to buy seeds. In fact, it’s never too early. Many seed corporations have discounts in mid winter or around Christmas time. So it’s quite essential to buy seeds before starting your planting. To begin growing indoors as lots of seeds can be bought in advance. And this may help have a good start on the season for gardening.

Q&A: asbestos in council house garden council suggest I wear face mask and dig it up.?
Question by plymchris: asbestos in council house garden council suggest I wear face mask and dig it up.?
I live in a council house in Plymouth and the council has buried asbestos in the garden. They will only take away what I dig up and suggest I wear a face mask when gardening. I have written to MP who does not seem to be able to make headway with them either and has finally said sorry nothing more to do. I have tried Environmental Health and Health and safety they both keep sending me to each other, no one seems to want to help. The asbestos is flaking and damaged. They originally suggested taking away all top soil with asbestos but now no because of how much it will cost. How can I get the council to do the job properly as they suggested?

Answer by Otts Shoals
Sounds like a job for the local newspaper. Invite a reporter over. It is probably better to just leave it where it is for the time being. In the USA, it would be illegal dumping, so it is curious the national Environmental offices will not help.

How To Create New House and Garden Plants By Using Stem Cuttings And Rooting Hormone Â
How To Create New House and Garden Plants By Using Stem Cuttings And Rooting Hormone Â
Article by Mary Hanna
A good gardening tip is that you can make more plants from your existing house and garden plants. This will cut out the expense of buying new house and garden plants. Look around for healthy plants to take the stem cuttings from to plant in a peat moss mixture using rooting hormone. This is what is called the mother plant. Make sure the mother plant has enough stems so the cutting will not kill the mother plant.
If you start your house and garden plants from stem cuttings instead of seeds it will take half the time to root. There a just a few things you will need : a mother plant, a flat for potting with a peat moss mixture, a sharp knife or razor blade, rooting hormone, containers for holding water and rooting hormone, alcohol, pencil or a stick, and a plastic bag.
Common sense tells you that you should take a stem cutting from the plant’s thickest green non flowering stems. The spot where the leaf attaches to the stem, known as the node, are the best place for you to take the stem cutting. The plants growth rooting hormones are concentrated there. Choose green, non-woody stems for taking the stem cuttings from the mother plant. Newer growth is easier to root than woody stems.
Cut with a sterilized instrument, either a very sharp knife or a razor blade, just below the node and then make another slanted cut about two or three inches further up the plant. This should provide you a stem cutting about three inches in length with two or three nodes. Trim off the side shoots and remove most of the leaves leaving a few since the stem cutting will need the leaves to provide food. Any large leaves must be removed as their wilting stresses the stem cutting and will definitely slow down the rooting process.
With your sterilized instrument make a clean cut in the bottom node. The roots will be formed from the sliced node.
Fill a clean plant pot or container with a peat moss potting mix to hold your stem cuttings for rooting. By using a peat moss potting mix you are giving the plant an atmosphere where the cutting will stay moist, not wet and sloppy.
You can make your own peat moss mixture; here are a couple of recipes:
½ sand and ½ peat moss or½ perlite and ½ peat moss or½ sand and ½ vermiculite or½ perlite and ½ vermiculite orEqual parts sand, perlite, vermiculite or peat moss instead of vermiculite.
Start by dipping the bottom inch of the stem cutting into the water and then the rooting hormone. This will help to speed up the creation of roots. The rooting hormone stimulates the stem cutting to send out new roots from the node. You will need to dip the cutting into the water and then into the rooting hormone. Tap off the excess as to not jeopardize your success with this stem cutting. If, after you have finished with your stem cuttings you have some of the rooting hormone left, throw it away. Once a stem cutting has touched it the rooting hormone becomes activated.
Moisten the peat moss potting mixture and poke holes in it to accommodate your plants. By making holes in the peat moss rooting medium with the pencil or the stick it will ensure that the rooting hormone remains on the cutting, not on the potting mixture surface. This will improve chances of rooting the stem cuttings and creating new house or garden plants. After you have successfully placed the stem cutting in the medium, gently press the potting mixture around it. You should plant your cuttings about 4-5 inches apart to allow for air circulation and room to root.
Place the container into a plastic bag and put it in a warm spot in the house. The reason for the bag is to keep the stem cuttings in high humidity and to hold in heat. You are creating a mini Greenhouse that takes up very little space. Don’t seal the bag as you need to allow for air circulation. Only after you see new growth should the cuttings be placed in a sunny area. Keep checking you stem cuttings. If the bag shows condensation you are likely giving it too much moisture. Take off the bag and let it dry out a little.
The way to test for new root growth is to gently pull on the plant after a few weeks. If there is resistance the plants are ready to be transferred into individual pots. Now you will have a new plant that you have cultivated from the mother plant.
Now use all these gardening tips and grow some new plants using stem cuttings.
Happy Gardening!

Answer by Debra S
How do you plan on getting the asbestos out of the water??
The asbestos will affect the plants, and when you consume the plants, the asbestos will enter your body. If you want to risk getting even more asbestos in your body, then go ahead. Please don’t poison others, though.

Don’t let the EPA catch you. If you ever sell the house, that would be considered an environmental hazard which you would be forced to divulge.

The point of my answer is: NO!! Don’t do it. I did not mean to imply that not getting caught is OK. This would be extremely irresponsible behavior.
