Question by ??????: how do you find a doctor who will give you a straight answer?
i recently was in the hospital for pneumonia and was told i could possibly have lung cancer. i have 2 chest xrays, a chest cat scan, a breathing test, a scope test down my nose into the lungs (which the doctor said everything looked good but he could see a spot and if it is cancer he could take off the bottom part of my lung and get it all) which led to a pet scan of the entire body. It came back negative, but now he still wants a biopsy, thi does not make sense to me. he is now upset because i want a second opinion. any help would be appreciated. also i have yet to see any of my exrays or test results.

Question by peace_love_rebel: Can a real doctor give me advice.?
My grandfather was dianosed with lung cancer in August ’08. He decided he doesnt want to treat it. The doctors said that they think he’s had it for anywhere from 3-5 years. He still smokes three packs a day. Tomorrow he has a doctors appt. But Can anyone tell me if they know if he’ll be around for a while longer..or how much time we have left with him.?

Answer by rosieC
The prognosis of lung cancer refers to the chance for recovery and is dependent upon the localization and size of the tumor, the presence of symptoms, the type of lung cancer,( small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer or primary or secondary lung cancer ) its stage; and the overall health status of the patient.
SCLC( small cell lung cancer) has the most aggressive growth of all lung cancers, with a median survival time of only 2-4 months after diagnosis when untreated. (That is, by 2-4 months, half of all patients have died.) However, SCLC is also the type of lung cancer most responsive to radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Staging is the process by which physicians determine the prognosis of a cancer that has already been diagnosed. Staging is essential for making treatment decisions (e.g., surgery vs. chemotherapy). Several features of the cancer are used to arrive at a staging classification, the most common being the size of the original tumor, extent of local invasion, and spread to distant sites (metastasis). Low staging classifications (0 – 1) imply a favorable prognosis, whereas high staging classifications (4 – 5) imply an unfavorable prognosis
Forecasting the Course of Disease: Lung Cancer Prognosis
Overall, fewer than 10% of people with primary lung cancer are alive 5 years after diagnosis. But 5-year survival rates may be as high as 35 to 40% among patients who undergo surgical resection for cancer that has not spread beyond the lung. General estimates of stage-specific median survival times—the point at which 50% of patients are still living—are as follows:
Stage 1a – more than 60 months (> 5 years)
Stage 1b – about 36 months (3 years)
Stage 2a – about 24 months (2 years)
Stage 2b – about 20 months (< 2 years)
Stage 3a - about 15 months (< 1.5 years)
Stage 3b - about 12 months (1 year)
Stage 4 - about 8 months (< 1 year)
Recent findings indicate that 5-year survival rates approach 85% among patients who are younger than 30 years of age and have surgically removable lung cancers.
Researchers believe that genetic mutations may be responsible for differences in survival rates between older and younger people with lung cancer.
Patients who are diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer in stage 1, for instance, may have as much as a 75% five year survival rate. In contrast, patients diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in the later stages face a 50% chance of death within four months
For this reason, regardless of what your doctor tells you, it is important to do what you can to take care of yourself. While nutrition may not provide a ‘cure’ for lung cancer, for instance, eating well most certainly can affect the eventual outcome of the disease.
Prognosis for lung cancer depends on your attitude – the more positive you can be, the better your chances of getting through a battle with lung cancer alive and smiling

Q&A: What companies give big donations for cancer research?
Question by Lucky Leasy: What companies give big donations for cancer research?
Im trying to raise about $ 25,000 for an organization called “Stand Up 2 Cancer”. They are pretty popular and they just had a huge concert called “Fashion Rocks”. I need information on this ASAP so please let me know if you can help me out with the names of some companies that give out big donations. THANKS!
Best answer:
Answer by Verite R
The companies that give out big donations usually have a very long and rigorous examination process before they will pay out.
If you want to get big donations – good luck to you. Can I suggest you ask around your friends, their parents, local leaders etc. if any of them have access to the charity approval board of a company. Don’t dismiss a company just because it is small – you haven’t heard of it, etc.
Then contact the organisers of Stand Up 2 Cancer. You will have to get their approval to ask for money in their name, and suggest you would like to run a small local event. Have fun doing this, and get your friends involved.
If companies see you are approved, and already running an event, they are more likely to take your request seriously. But it takes a long time – be warned.
Good luck, and if you want information about jigs and events organised by others, look under

Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes.

Would it be bad to make my college essay about my lung disease? Please give me your honest opinion!?
Question by : Would it be bad to make my college essay about my lung disease? Please give me your honest opinion!?
Okay so my college essay prompt is to explain a significant experience that I have gone through and how it has impacted my life. I have cystic fibrosis, a severe lung disease and I want to write about how it has impacted my life. I won’t be writing a oh pity me essay instead I wanted to talk about how it has made me a stronger person. I want to make my point that I have an illness to deal with on top of school & hobbies etc. yet it doesn’t bring me down.. I am in ap and honors classes, I am in a ton of clubs, I make movies outside of school.
I want to write about this & make it into a cool story since I’m creative, but my mom doesn’t think I should even bring up my disease in my college essay because she thinks my illness will discourage the colleges reading my essay from accepting me into their school because I have a disease. What do you think? Wouldn’t the colleges reading my college essay be impressed that I have this disease and yet it doesn’t slow me down, rather I excelled in high school. Any thoughts? Advice?

Answer by ownpool
The subject is acceptable. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, colleges cannot discriminate against students who have illnesses.

What is it that makes smoking give you cancer?
Question by maximushg: What is it that makes smoking give you cancer?
is it the nicotine or some other material in the cigarette its self? or is it just the fact that your inhaling smoke and if so will smoke from anything give you lung cancer for exmple if you stand in front of a campfire and inhale the smoke for a long time every day will you get lung cancer ?? thx
Best answer:
Answer by Megan Rivera
It’s generally thought to be the smoke. Nicotine is a narcotic stimulant that affects the nervous system, and has very little effect on the lungs themselves, however, it’s difficult to pin it down exactly since all people are individuals and react to things like cigarettes, etc, in different ways.

Can popcorn ceilings really give you cancer 20 years later?
Question by : Can popcorn ceilings really give you cancer 20 years later?
Some pieces of my popcorn ceiling fell off while I was hanging something up and I’m very worried that I inhaled some of it. I’m not 100% sure if it has asbestos in it or not, it’s a very old apartment building in san diego.
Am I going to get cancer for inhaling a little bit of it?
Best answer:
Answer by Pro Con
If you don’t know, it’s better to assume there is asbestos in your ceiling. I live in Orange County and it’s definitely been used here.
The CDC in Atlanta Georgia would probably be able to give you a definitive answer as to the dangers of a small amount, but I would guess you have nothing to worry about.
If you ever decide to remove your own acoustic ceiling, be sure to wear a protective mask.

When you have cancer are school and employers required to give you the time off for treatment?
Question by
: When you have cancer are school and employers required to give you the time off for treatment?
What happens if you get cancer while you’re going to a private high school or college and you’ve already paid? Do they make you pay to take the classes again when you’re better? It would suck to lose the money you spent when it’s not your fault. How about with work? Are companies allowed to fire somebody who has to miss a lot of work because they’re sick?
Best answer:
Answer by J B
They are not required to hold a job for anyone with any kind of illness. It would be up to the employee to find out what their policy might be regarding use of sick time.

Can anyone with breast cancer experience give me info?
Question by : Can anyone with breast cancer experience give me info?
my mom had a masectomy last june 1, 21 lymphnodes removed because they were hard, and 20 had cancer in them, and then 6 chemos every 3 weeks, then radiation, i think 24 rounds. She had her 2nd breast removed on feb 21 because the ultrasound showed suspicion of cancer (she has / had invasive lobular carcinoma IN BOTH BREASTS). they took out 24 lymphnodes which were soft and all had cancer in them. Why would there still be cancer after the chemo and radiation? Also, the cancer in the 1st breast was very big and likely there for years, but the cancer in the 2nd breast wasnt even noticeable as far as being able to detect or feel it with a breast exam, and the other one she was able to feel and notice the difference as it was very dense. So I am trying to understand what this all means. She goes to the specialist on the 15th to find out what further treatment she will have. They figured she would be taking a pill, but that was before knowing there was cancer still in her (all blood, lung, bone scans etc came back normal). Can anyone tell me why cancer is still there and what we maybe should expect. I know everyones case is different, just looking for general info. Thanks!
PLEASE I dont want to hear “expect the worst” “miracles can happen” blah blah blah……I would like a real answer, with either facts or someones own experience NOT just opinions
