In light of our current rates of heart disease and cancer, is the United States a healthy nation?

If you measure “healthy” as how much we spend on medical care, we’re an extremely UNHEALTHY nation. If you measure “healthy” as life expectancy, well, we’re not doing so well there, either.

Has there been any proof of yeast causing heart disease?
Question by Veritatum17: Has there been any proof of yeast causing heart disease?
This is a Kevin Trudeau claim in his “Natural Cures” books, specifically that Candida yeast is responsible for most incidents of heart disease. The remedy is something called “Candida Cleanse”, which he has a financial interest in.
My mother is an M.S.N. and she told me that the only patients she’s seen with yeast infections of the heart were severely immuno-depressive, ie terminal AIDS patients or stage 4 cancer patients.
Best answer:
Answer by Arabian Dune
yeast can cause inflammation of the inner coating cells of the heart in very sick immuno supressed people like you have mentioned. that would cause heart failure. it is also possible in intra venous drug abusers, albeit very rare.
yeast dose not cause heart attacks. not even a small percentage.

i miss him so much my heart can bare it.?
Question by : i miss him so much my heart can bare it.?
I know there were alot of wrongs in the relationship. I can’t see myself without him…
him: sex addiction recoverable, family caused depression, and relearning to live as an adult, anger out of frustration and not telling me his feeling directly, suspiciousness
me: being kicked out of brothers house, handed over responsibility to take care of ill parents (cancer, heart problems), certification exam for job, parents can be manipulative and controlling too (been like that even b4 the diagnosis of cancer), went through depression, ex abuse, GOD IM GOING THROUGH ALOT.
so my good friend moves to tx and we become closer…I pushed him away telling him im scared my heart will be broken…he convinced me….i fell in love..took all the bricks down I put up on my heart…he was ther for me emotionally and cared for me. after hearing abt sex addiction as much as i oppose to it..I was shocked and was still managing to work it through..he told me to not pressure him to having sex etc..when i lovingly touched him…i was hurt…he was dependent on me and he said that he can be independent cook and clean and eat himself..and i was very proud…and i didnt want to feel like he can;t do anything without me and i gave him little space not too much and i wanted to work through the shock of sex addiction he told me about…as i was doing this.. my dad becomes diagnosed with cancer…i know they are not the great parents but when a person is dying and can;t help themselves you try to be there…even though they seek dependency from me and not acknowledge me much for it..he does not like the way my parents treat me…understandable i do not either. he didnt care for much i did for him either in the beginning and felt it never is enough..i dont treat a man w/respect he says…i love the goodness he has in him and i know you guys are thinking how or im blind? well he loves me and he has shared my pain and was always there for me…
when i found out abt cancer and thought of death..i was shocked..i dont have anyone to do all this appointments etc…i did it all…and i really missed himbut didnt drag him to all of this i was recovering and was passive to him for aweek or so..he took it as i dont love him anymore and things of that nature…first he attempted to break up and i convinced him that we can work through it and he wanted me to read a lot of self help books and i was willing for the betterment of both of us…but the next day i know he woke up from sleep but to treat me as nothing and telling me not to touch him …and playing hate full videos about how texas sucks was bothering me emotionally because i was emotionally washed and drained and walked all over at that time…i was furious and frustrated and told him that im sorry im sorry for all this…he said he was angry cuz he didnt get enough sleep…but comeon ..really? only that reason? so i gave him back the book and said ill go im sorry and he w/a smile said ohso ur not going to read this? i said no and walked away…the next day i came back to apologize and he went off on me and said its over he doesnt like me or the relationship.
I really want him back in his good sense. but he said that we will never get back together and not to wait for him. How can I? I’m in deep deep love with him…and he leaves me at the most crucial point of my life.. how can he?
is there anyway i can have him back in my life… i know we can work through it all. he doesnt pick up my calls, no response to txts, didn’t open door.

How does emphysema and congestive heart failure affect acid-base imbalance?
Question by lew: How does emphysema and congestive heart failure affect acid-base imbalance?
Best answer:
Answer by matador89
Patients with advanced heart failure commonly develop simple or mixed acid-base disturbances. The altered acid-base homeostasis can occur as a consequence of the heart failure itself, the therapeutic interventions, or associated conditions. When heart transplantation is undertaken, in patients before heart transplantation there is a mixed acid-base imbalance that includes respiratory alkalosis and metabolic alkalosis. After transplantation the recovery of the abnormal circulatory status erases the initial respiratory alkalosis but metabolic alkalosis usually persists and accounts for a further rise in plasma bicarbonate.

a Hole in your heart? ?
Question by Miichan!: a Hole in your heart?
Okay. My dad is 50 years old. recently he’s been sick alot so he went to the docter. They told him it’s because he has a Hole in his heart. Everything i’ve found on it so far says you are born with it, however, Because my dad is a 3x cancer survivor (once a cancerous tumor, once lung cancer, and once lymphnode cancer) His heart has been checked NUMEROUS times, and it was not there before, so my question is, what couldhave caused the hole? he doesn’t smoke or anything likethat, if it helps.
He hasn’t gone through chemo or any type of cancer therapy in over 9 years so i doubt it… He does have severe depression though, because he’s been single for 16 years… and yes he’s been looking the wholetime so anyone saying “he needs a girlfriend” is a moron. WE KNOW THAT ALREADY not the point here.

Answer by Willow
one of my friends has a hole in his heart. He’s only sixteen and yes, he was born with it. They wanted to operate on it when he turns eighteen however it got bigger recently and they’ll probably have to operate on it sooner. It’s possible your dad was born with a very small hole, one that wouldn’t have caught any attention or cause any problems but recently got big enough to cause him to get sick.
I don’t think even my friend knows what caused his hole, so i don’t think i can help you much there. He had cancer, so maybe if he wasn’t born with it, it was caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. i don’t know how either of those would do that though.
I hope i’ve helped and i hope your dad gets better. from what you’ve said, he sounds like a pretty tough cookie.

I dont think it was very recent… I first thought i might have it like 2 years ago… but never went to the doctor or anything.

I have frequent CT scans due to my lung cancer. A couple of years ago, a suspicious shadow was seen on one of my breasts so was sent for a mammogram.. luckily it came back negative. So I would say a mammo would be more accurate than a CT scan for early detection of breast cancer.

Q&A: heart disease? diabetes?
Question by sour_raindrops: heart disease? diabetes?
I weigh 66 kilos, I am 5 foot tall, and 12.
My friends say I look healthy, and slim, and I dont look obese.
Recently, I have been having shortness of breath, and slight dizziness at random moments then it goes away, and abit of chest pain, it said it may lead to lung, or heart disease.
Although you need to have a high blood pressure in having that.
the doc said my blood pressure is average for my age.
And also ever since I was small, my armpits look darker than my average skin tone, and my neck, inner thighs.
It said there might be too much insulin contained in me, or I just need to use a type of lotion, to remove it, but I dont know where to buy it? or what brand?
And when I was younger, I wasn’t chubby at all.
HELP!
if you have the answers, or if you are/were having the same problems as me, if your near my age.
thankyou!

Q&A: URGENT!! Heart Attack?
Question by >>Phoenix< <: URGENT!! Heart Attack?
I was not doing anything in particular when I felt a burning sensation in the palm of my left hand. I looked at it to see a bulging vein about the length of a dime. It was many times it’s normal size & protruding well above the skin.
Then a pain like that of being stabbed by an ice pick ran through my palm cramping it completely.
When I looked next, the vein had flattened into a V shape & was spreading a grey color across my palm.
Between the lifeline (where the popping occurred) & the index finger there is a cone of redness that appears lightly speckled.
There is a brown dot at the intersection of the V & a red dot on my index finger.
There is swelling & greyness to the entire upper portion (fingers & knuckles) of my left hand.
My rings which normally fit loosely are now too tight & my left hand does not match my right.
I chewed a low dose aspirin tablet but I was told that this may be a sign of a heart attack.
I can find no symptoms that match what has just occurred & this is the first time that I ever recall having this happen.
I have mild vertigo, nausea & tenderness of the left arm. This is accompanied by a slight pressure in my back just under the left shoulder blade as well as a numbness under the arm.
I’m prone to anxiety attacks & may not know the difference between panic & heart trouble.
I have had recent stressful issues & 2 nearly sleepless nights.
I am now getting a very bad headache.
I do not drink, smoke or use any drugs (except for the same prescriptions I’ve had for 3 years).
I have had 2 irregular EKGs within the last year.
I am 48 years old cancer survivor with asthma & arthritis… & a family history of cancer & heart disease.
I also have no insurance.
Do I go to the hospital ER or is this something that will go away on it’s own?
Please… suggestions are welcome… just make them very quickly.
Thank you for responding, R.
No, I am not on any phychotropics at all nor am I in withdrawl of them.
Might I ask how “withdrawl symptoms” would include the blowing out of a vein?
That seems a bit odd.
I believe that this may be a minor cardiac episode, given the physical aspects… though it must not require treatment… given the response to it’s urgency.

how long do you have to abuse alcohol to develop heart problems?/liver problems?
Question by : how long do you have to abuse alcohol to develop heart problems?/liver problems?
okay i’m 19 years old, i just turned 19 on october 25th, i’ve recently developed a drinking problem for over a year now. I started drinking originally when i was 12 but back then i wasn’t hooked on it, i only drank at christmas parties that my family threw once a year and i barely finished a 12 ounce can when i was age 12-16. Then in december 2009 it was the most drunk i got at the christmas parties since i’ve been going, back then i was able to go up to 11 months without drinking again. December 2010 is when i began to fly off the handle with drinking alcohol. My father god rest his soul, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer on october 28th 2010, and on january 12th 2011 he died, he was only 66 years old and i was only 18. I watched him deteriorate and cough up blood and even now i’m still shocked that he’s gone. After experimenting with 4 lokos in december 2010, i went on binges from january to august 2011. yes sometimes i could last 14 or 15 days without a drink but i’d slip up again. I still had problems with the drinking this year as well. I had binges in september, october, november, and december of 2011. I found that it’s much easier to stop but the cravings are still there. My greving process has gotten better since the end of february 2012, and i’ve been plugging away without depression and i’ve been loving life, life has been good lately i can’t complain. But I discovered that even on good days when i’m not greiving or having a bad day, i still wanna drink. I’m addicted to the buzzed feeling that alcohol gives you, that “high” feeling so to speak. That brings me to my question: is there a name of a medication that helps stop alcohol cravings? my therapist want’s me to see a psychiatrist so he can prescribe something to help me stop drinking. and also how long does it take to damage your body from alcohol use, i’ve abused it for over a year in large quantities is my heart damaged? can i get diabetes? is my liver badly damaged? or do i have to drink for years and years to cause that? i heard drinking excessively can cause A-FIB and heart problems do i have to worry about that at my age?
P.S: I just have to say that i have come a long way, after an entire year of taking care of my father, then watching him die i was depressed for months. Then in september and october of 2011 i was still depressed, i was so despondant i didn’t want to leave the house or hang out with friends, i just couldn’t bare the thought of living without him. Then the greiving got better and my life has turned around for the better, if i can only get my drinking under control. To all of you out there that lost a loved one IT IS POSSIBLE TO FEEL GOOD AGAIN AND ENJOY LIFE, cause i thought i would be depressed forever and i made it.

Answer by TheOneandOnly
If you’ve only been at it a year or so you probably haven’t permanently damaged anything. I drank very heavily for 4 years and it didn’t cause me any lasting damage. The liver does regenerate, and you’re pretty young for alcohol to cause heart problems.
It’s good that you want to stop, I would definitely try to find an AA group, the support from others is going to help you more than anything else.

Question by gg: What could it mean if a stage 4 breast cancer patient had “fluid in the heart”?
Sorry, details are not available.
She is getting treatment in Mexico, and that is the only info I have.
She already has the breast cancer in her lungs and bones.
She just went for her first chemo treatment, but before the treatment, they got the cardio results, and the “water on the heart” diagnosis came up….
Is this typical of something for breast cancer patients?
Please don’t cut and paste from self-diagnosis websites.

Question by ~rainy skies and sleepy eyes~: information on heart or any other type of cancer?
I’m currently planning out a story to write and I need informtion about either heart or other types of cancer. You see, the seventeen year old girl in the story, who is the main character, is planned to be dying from cancer and is supposed to have a year left to live. The problem is, I haven’t a clue WHICH cancer to use. I wanted the cancer to not show any physical signs of it being there at all until the last months or so. I had wanted it to be from heart cancer, but I’m not sure since the details of it are hard to understand. (I’m 14 by the way) Maybe another cancer would work but I need help. Can someone feed me all the information on a cancer that a person my age can understand? It would really be apprieciated. <: ]

How do I auscultate the heart and lung sounds of an iguana?
Question by quixoticwaldron: How do I auscultate the heart and lung sounds of an iguana?
I’m a Nursing student, and for practice I tried to find the heart and lung sounds on my iguana. I can’t find any at all, short of scales scratching on my diaphragm.
Best answer:
Answer by ALM
To hear the heart sounds place the stethoscope on the thorax in between the front legs. It can be hard to hear, make sure the surroundings are quiet and you may try placing a damp towel between your stethoscope and the iguana to decrease rubbing noises from the scales. Respiratory sounds are hard to hear as well. Just move your scope around.

Q&A: My cat has heart disease and hyper-thyroidism, what’s her outlook?
Question by wolfcurse: My cat has heart disease and hyper-thyroidism, what’s her outlook?
A month ago, we took my cat to the vet and discovered she had hyperthyroidism. She had an allergic reaction to the medication and she’s been right for a week or so, but we noticed she was breathing funny today and when I got home from work I took her to the vet. She had fluid on the lungs, an enlarged heart and the vet said that he’d seen worse. My mum ended up picking her up and talking to the vet without me so I didn’t get the chance to ask questions.
I just wanted to know if anyone else out there has had experience with a cat who had hyperthyroidism and heart disease, and how did the treatment go for them? Did they live a long, healthy life?
Also, she has a heart murmur and now has a catheter insterted in one of her front legs. She’s getting a check-up in the morning.
I’m just worried and want to know what I’m in for.
I forgot to mention, she’s ten years old in November.
Best answer:
Answer by J C
Geez – NO you don’t put a cat to sleep for hyperthyroidism and a heart murmur! Both are easily treated, and aren’t causing your cat any pain. First, understand the thyroid is a gland that controls many body functions. When it isn’t working properly it can cause issues with the heart and kidneys. Once the thryoid has been regulated, the heart condition may improve on it’s own. If not, that’s controlled with inexpensive medication same as in humans.
Hyperthyroidism is very common especially in older cats. My 14 year old cat has it, as does my 13 year old foster cat. Their quality of life is excellent, and isn’t considered a factor in their qualilty of life, or the length of their life – as long as it’s treated and controlled. If yours is having a reaction to the oral drug, ask your vet to have it compounded into a transdermal cream (rubbed in to her ears). Many cats tolerate that much better – a close friend of mine has a cat that cannot tolerate the oral Tapizole, and is on the cream and is doing very well.
I had a foster cat with heart disease, she was treated very successfully with a human drug called Atenolol. Now, 4 years later, her heart disease has been reversed and she’s living very happily still with her adoptive family.
When we’re alert to what is going on with our cats, we can get them to the vet for proper treatment, as you clearly did. Please don’t be afraid to call the vet’s office and ask him any questions. The prognosis is NOT grim, so hang in there. Best wishes for a full recovery for her.
