I am 20 and on Monday. I originally went to my doctor for a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck that I discovered 4 months ago without any symptoms that would indicate lymphoma except for the lump, and that same morning I was to go to the doctor I came down with a sore throat.
Anyway he checked my swollen lymph node and prescribed me antibiotics, asked me a series of question on if I have allergies and referred me to get a chest X-ray to make sure its not lung cancer, took a blood test to check for infection or Leukemia. He also told me Worse Case Scenario would be the “C” word like lymphoma, Lung cancer, or Leukemia and I NEVER smoke or drink. Anyway the same day I came from the doctor on Monday I found two more swollen Lymph nodes one above my collar bone and the other about one is about 2 inches from my original lymph node.
Also today I have been having a congested nose and blowing out mucus, my throat is STILL sore, but not as bad as Monday and I have been having a sore dull pain on the left side of my tongue(not the surface of tounge) all the way in the back on the side and when I looked at my tongue its like I have some swelling on that side as well as some dark veiny streak and when I touch it it hurts. No pus it coming out it just hurts a little and is causing my teeth on the left side to hurt as well as my throat on the left side. I don’t know if this is normal? My jaw also hurts on the left side, but I’ve already had my wisdom teeth taken out last year cause I use to get this same pain when my wisdom teeth were coming in, but it stopped when I had them taken out. Now the pain returned a little. I don’t know what’s going? It’s just that since the doctor told me the terrifying news on what MIGHT be I have just been freaking out like crazy! Am I dying? Is this something serious? Am I truly over reacting? IS this normal? I’ve been taking advil which is helping with the pain on my tongue

Ur lymph nodes draw out infection from ur body they take in the infection which makes them swell, now it sounds like u have a throat infection which is causing the nodes , cancer doesn’t tend to affect young people seen as ur 20 u should be fine also apparently cancer ‘doesn’t hurt’ ur doctor seems a bit dramatic to tell u that with out knowing anything else/ results.
There are so many reasons why lymph node can be raised very few of which are cancer related.
So relax I’m sure U’ll be fine

I’m sorry about your loss. But none of the nagging and complaining and begging you do to your girlfriend to stop will work. If she just started for kicks you may have some luck showing her some pictures of diseased lungs on the internet. But if she’s hooked then the only way she will quit is when she wants to quit. Sorry I’m sure you didn’t want to hear that.

I have a friend who is 18 years old and smokes excessively and does a fair amount of drinking. Lately he hasn’t been feeling well and the symptoms he has are very serious. The symptoms are random bruising on his legs, coughing up blood, dizziness, burning sensation in his throat and lungs, he’s also had a fever for the past day or so and breaks into cold sweat. And he just told me that he “experienced cardiac arrest at 5am” (I’m not sure if he was lying or maybe mistook whatever happened for cardiac arrest on accident). He refuses to see a doctor but I’m scared that whatever he has maybe very serious or even deadly.
Also, I’m not looking for diagnoses, just some diseases that have some of these symptoms.
Any answer is helpful though.

I am a 53 year old women, average weight, and fairly healthy. In the summer of ’07 I went to the gyno and found that I had 2 tumors behind my uteris. They were not malignant, and they successfully removed them as well as my uterus. In the Fall of ’08 I had blood in my flem, and coughed up some blood. I went to the doctor and they believed I had pneumonia, although they were not sure. I also had adema in my calves and feet, although it did not last long (about 2 days). Occasionally my tongue will swell up and I accidentally bite my checks, and for awhile I had rashes on my arms. Ever since this happened I have been to the doctor many times. At a point I was even going weekly. I just received back results saying that I have high protein in my urine as well as microscopic blood. My cholestrol levels (and HDL and LDL) levels raised greatly too. I had an appointment planned for weeks ahead, but the doctor called and told me I have to come in Monday. I am very worried and am asking for answers. Also, I drink some, and my father passed away from lung cancer recently. Any help would be greatful!

Cancer Doc answered a question about lung nodules for me. Just got PET scan results back and there was no uptake of my larger (12 mm) nodule…but the report says that the fact of no metabolic update cannot rule out bronchoalveolar or carcinoid tumors. They also found 5 more subcentimeter nodules and I have hypermetabolic and enlarged mid cervical lymph nodes (12mm by 15 mm) – I haven’t had so much as a cold in 2 years! I am still very concerned, but the doc says to wait four months for another CAT to see if any of these grow. I am a widow with a ten year old son. I am all he has, his dad passed away three years ago. 47 yr old woman with 42 pack yrs of smoking (just quit). Any advice? I don’t see how I can wait 4 months when I FEEL LIKE I KNOW IT IS CANCER…which is hard for me to explain – I just know it. Thanks!

It is important to be moist so air cannot pass through as easily. It sounds like the patient had a pneumothorax, which is a hole in the chest cavity. It was getting harder to breathe because air was going into the cavity and can compress the lung. A tension pneumothorax can actually shift the heart and trachea and be deadly if not promptly treated.

31 y/o female presents with chief complaint of right groin pain which extends to midline pelvis down to inner thigh. Symptoms are generally mild until patient drives, sits, or stands 30 minutes or longer. Patient states onset has been about 3 months ago and is now progressively getting worse. No trauma or injury noted by patient. Pain is better when patient lays down on other hip, but does not completely diminish.
Patient past surgical history: Complete hysterectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy
Patient medical history: mild Fibromyalgia, chronic sinusitis, appendicitis, Gall bladder EF=14%, “malfunctioning uterus”, superficial blood clot (pregnancy)
Patient family medical history: Cancer (bone, blood, lung, kidney, breast), Heart attack, DVT’s, anemia, HTN, hernia
1st office visit: Dr. ordered venous duplex and x-ray of right hip after ruling out hernia.
After both tests came back normal, Dr. ordered CT scan with contrast of abdomen/pelvis…results were pseudo finding of transverse ascending colon inflammation consistent with colitis.
After reviewing results of CT, physician had patient trial an oral steroid (Medrol Dose Pack) Patient’s symptoms became intensley worse on this medication. Initially, the upper groin/pelvic pain got better, but entire right hip “was on fire” where the patient stated that she couldn’t even stand having anything touch it including her underwear. As the medication gradually decreased the original symptoms returned at a gradual pace and the “fire” in her hip lessened as the medication dosage lessened.
2nd office visit: Due to the worsening effect from the Medrol, physician did pelvic exam and noted severe bone pain located at the top right of patients vaginal wall. Patient stated that there has been a dull ache there at all times since Feb 2009 and was made worse with sexual intercourse but hadn’t thought of that earlier. (no history of STD’s)
Pysician ordered full pelvic x-ray, basic lab workup, and MRI’s of hip and pelvis…all were negative.
Patient was sent to have a nerve conduction test and EMG…both negative.
Patient’s pain is presently worsening and she is now unable to drive longer than 10 minutes if pain was previously aggrivated and 20 minutes if not. Dull pain is continuously present but is made excrutiating when putting pressure on the pelvic bone itself. Pain seems to be worst in groin, vaginal, and bottom of the buttocks areas.
Things ruled out already: DVT, Hernia, bone infection, visible tumor, nerve entrapment, spinal and/or disc problems, arthritis, and referred pain
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this odd presentation of symptoms could be? How about a next step suggestion? We are running out of options and we are 100% positive this is not “in the patient’s head”. Any further insight and ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Pt is 5’3″ and 134 lbs and has also had complaints of fatigue for about 1 year.

Thank you Kathy. However, the oral steroid (Medrol) that was tried should have helped the pain if this was the issue. This medication is an oral substitue to a corticosteroid that is injected to relieve this type of nerve pain that isn’t fixed with manipulation. Therefore, the pt’s poor response to the Medrol trial would rule this out. Thanks again…was an interesting and great find!

It’s not really a mystery or even hard to fix. Crazy part is if the dr. I had tried taking this type of information to six months ago had listened it might have been somewhere out there for you instead of me having to pass it around on the net. Here is what has happened to her. The tendon that attaches her thigh to her body has shortened, like all tendons have the capability to do. It is now pulling her thigh into her hip and the more it tightens the harder it is to sit, or anything for any period of time. She needs her tendon released so that her hip will once again glide as it was meant to do instead of being pulled tight into her body. The release is fairly simple also and is as follows:
Pelvic tendon
With only shorts on lay on a bed and pull your legs up and bend them at the knee so your feet are flat on the bed. Take your hand and run it down the crease between your thigh and body. When you reach the area of your pelvis you will feel a bump in that crease. That is the tendon to work on. Take it between your fingers and thumb and press and hold a good amount of pressure on it. Then relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After 30 seconds slowly lower your leg outward until it has gone as far as it will. Then release the pressure but rest your leg there for one minute longer. As a side note, if you cannot get a grip on the tendon, press on it near the pelvis with as much pressure as you can. Don’t let it slip out from under that pressure. Then use the rest of the exercise to finish up.

sorry its long but please read… Im 13 and had not health problems just regular ones like cough and colds and stuff but for a week now ive had this headache around the fron part of my head mostly forehead and it was worse when i got on the computer and played games now it seems to be going away slowly but surely before this i used to go to bed really late around 4 am or 5am and not ge tmuch sleep or wake up around 2pm or 3pm and i played alot on the computer and video games probably spent 85 percent of my day on the computer and video games and didnt go outside at all and now ive been going to bed earlier at around 2am or 3am today im going to try to go to bed at 1am and not getting on the computer much and going outside much not alot more of going out side though and it seems to be going away but the symptoms ive had are headache around stomach and thats about it and also last night i was juggling a bouncy ball and my head started to hurt after a while of doing it i had just taken a shower to and when i move my head fast rapidly it hurt to what do you guys think im pretty worried and again im 13 years old and i think it could be an eyestrain what do you guys think and my family doesnt have any records of brain cancer just my granpa but he had throat cancer and liver cancer i think cause he smoked alot and used to drink alot of beer and stuff and i saw somewhere that white people haev a higher percentage than any other race and im mexican if that helps any but anyways please help

I can tell you it is NOT brain cancer. You are probably still recovering from a cold, they can go on for weeks. Believe me, I know.

my dad is 53 and has a lump in his neck.he has had it about 2 months and has been urgently refered to a ENT specialist.he saw the specialist yesterday and had the lump examined.they performed an endoscopy and a fine needle aspiration and sent it away for tests.the results will be back in 10 long days.i’m so scared and expecting the worst.there is a lot of family history on my dad’s side regarding cancer.his dad died of lung cancer,mum skin cancer,brother leukemia,brother bowel cancer,sister ovarian cancer.yes my dad is a smoker.whats the probability my dad has cancer?

Hello! I just moved half way across the country to Montana to work at hospital. Part of my job is to come up with an environmental health project that pertains to patients in my area. I have a couple ideas–maybe anyone reading this could tell me their favorite idea…or give me additional topics? First off there are a lot of migrant workers here. Here are my ideas thus far:
1) Pesticide exposure and the related health risks to farm workers
2) Water testing near farmworker housing and the related health risks
3) Underground storage container leaks and the related health risks
I’m putting this under homework help, even though its not really homework.

i like the 1st one… im not sure how this would fit in but i was thinking how the amount of CO2 in the air is really hurting the plants instead of helping them….srry its kinda lengthly

I would just put her down now in all honesty because cancer is extremly painful and you don’t want her to suffer..im sry for your loss
