My family needed a home so we jumped into buying a old mobile home made in the 70′s. Found mold in the walls?
Question by MizzLD: My family needed a home so we jumped into buying a old mobile home made in the 70′s. Found mold in the walls?
This is my first post. I really regret putting money into this dump. Found mold in the walls of the bathroom and am now worried about asbestos. Can I back out? Should we just clean and tear out moldy junk? What if there’s asbestos? Bought it January 15th. Had planned to remodel but don’t know what approach to take now. My family needs a home they won’t get sick staying in.

Answer by frenchcountryplus
Did you have a home inspection? If so it is obvious that the mold was overlooked and yes it can cause health problems
The thing to consider is that there may be mold growing on the actual framing, therefore the extent of the tear out may be costly but necessary.
If you are able to, consult with your realty lawyer and the health department. You have a valid reason and concern to back out of the deal. As for asbestos I would say that it is highly unlikely it exists.

Question by drainitage: Selling my Home Problem Neighboring eyesore Blighted property?
I selling my home in New Jersey and My believe that why is taking so long to sell my house I had about 20 visits for my house. But the problem is that my neighbor house is blightened property. He died and no one was taking care of it. The owner family tore the exterior features up to use it for their own need. The rest of my street looks fine by neigbor next door to me rebuild his house and look nice which is a plus. The blightened property has been like this for 4 years we complain to the township but they did’nt do nothin to demolish it. It has leans over the the property. Standing water, abestos was found in the garage, windows broken, interior gutted, flood basement was leaking oil one time, grass wasn’t cut. All of the neigbors on our street complain to the township but nothin is done to solve this problem. I don’t know what else to do but are property values are affected and this is by waterfront property not for inner city ghetto. What should I do.
http://suburban.gmnews.com/news/2007/1121/Front_Page/025.html Here the link to the article.
Nothin done yet about it.
That’s not all. The flood basement standing water sept up from the ground and floods my sidewalk by a inch or two. The roofing has about 4 or 5 layers. Birds and animnals fly through the broken windows get trap and die. If it was’nt for me too cut the grass their would be mice and rodents.
Yes will when my neigbor died. It just became abandoned. Leans I mean debts. I got a billed that was to the abandoned home just the water bill $ 750.
Since their was oil leaking in the basement someone smell the odors report it to the Fire Department and Hazmat came to clean it up and was fine $ 3000 to the owner which is now his brother.

I don’t know if this is a scam for money or if it’s the truth, but I’m not going to be the only one with suspicions. I don’t think you will get anyone to donate money for a stranger. I am truly sorry for your grandpa, but what other way is there to get to the Philippines except through flight? You see why people will question this? If you are truly honest about this, then have a fund raiser. Go around and see if you can get people to join in the fund raiser so he can go home because I really don’t think you will get anywhere this way. I’m sorry. I hope he gets home.

Q&A: buying an older home. Basement and A/C questions?
Question by Elyse N: buying an older home. Basement and A/C questions?
we are currently in the process of home buying (first time). We didn’t qualify for first time home buyers because of our income (boo) BUT we did get some good rates. 3.5% financing with only 5% down. Anyway…on the top of our list is an older home, that looks NEW! i was very fooled by the pictures. When i saw it was 120 years old i was like…No way!!!! Everything on the main floor has been redone. Brand new coutnertops, flooring, appliances, cabinets. Laundry room has been redone. Bathrooms have been redone (May need a new bathtub.) only ONE room needs some new dry wall, which we can do ourselves…not a huge deal. The family room needs new carpet, has juice stains all over it. insulated 2 car garage, fenced yard…beautiful brand new garden shed
Other than that…we thought this was the only fixing up we would have to do. Until we saw the basement…….YIKES! what a nightmare. I thought i was going to get rabies from just walking down there.
It has the stone walls, the floor is not really even. There is asbestos in the basement (which sellers claim they will have it removed since our lenders wont give us the loan until it is removed). So our problems now:
1) the basement in general
2) the asbestos
and for the kicker…it doesn’t have central air! This is the biggest problem my fiance has with the place. the basement, we can fix up as best we can…asbestos will be removed, and examined a million times before we move in. It has the hot water heaters, the radiators. So NOW were looking into putting in central air. The house has no ducts, so we’re talking CHA CHING! clearly….
Any thoughts on if we should continue with this? the house in general is very nice, very well taken care of. Any experts on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
Best answer:
Answer by Alison
You should find someone in your area that can give you a quote on installing the central air. There are systems designed specifically for installation in older homes so the price might not be as high as you think. If the basement bothers you that much you can hire someone else to do some finish work on it. Not all basements are useful as regular rooms. Perhaps just plan on using it for the appliances (heat and your future air conditioner) and storage.

We didnt use masks or ANY protection!! We had No idea about asbestos!! I also had other children in the house when we were doing this… are we poisened with asbestos!!!!
Best answer:
Answer by raina_vissora
1) Asbestos does not “poison” you. It leaves particulate matter in you lungs that can eventually cause lung cancer.
2) Asbestos is used as insulation above the ceiling (and between walls), not as part of the ceiling itself. Unless you put a big hole in the ceiling, you’re fine.
3) Wear a mask any time you’re sending any kind of dust flying everywhere… it’s not healthy to inhale that, either.

Help in getting my dad home with end stage COPD. He is on a vent and feeding tube. Any suggestions?
Question by letzgodebbie: Help in getting my dad home with end stage COPD. He is on a vent and feeding tube. Any suggestions?
My dad was put on a ventilator in Sept 2011. He has been to 3 different respiratory facilities with numerous trips to the hospital in between. All he wants to do is go home. Any suggestions on the help available to make this happen? I believe Hospice is out of the question as they do not allow a person to be on a Vent. Or perhaps I have been talking to the wrong Hospice Providers.
Best answer:
Answer by gypsy04967
There should be a social worker at the hospital who can help you with this. There are home health care agencies who can provide health care in his home even if he is on a vent and NG tube. You might have to do a little research. The social worker should know all the ins and outs though and she or he can arrange it all and tell you what you need to do. good luck

If the stairway is wider than 36 inches, then it should have handrails on both sides of the staircase. Guard Railings Guard railings are located on balconies, landings between staircases, on open second story hallways, patios, or any where there is a drop off of more than the normal step of seven inches. The railings must be secure and able to restrain an adult person from falling over the edge. She is in Stage 4 which has metastasized to her bones, nothing they can do. At least I know she’s being cared for at the nursing home. I am handicapped myself, and cannot care for her.

HELP!! Can he force my dying parents out of their own home?
Question by Shae K: HELP!! Can he force my dying parents out of their own home?
Just over two years ago my parents sold their home to help my sister “Laurie” and her common-law husband “Dan” to purchase a new home. My parents agreed to put the entire amount from the sale of their home as a down payment towards the new house only if my parents were allowed to live in the basement suite and not have to contribute to the mortgage, and they would also have to help pay for half of all the utilities. Laurie and Dan verbally agreed. But none of this agreement was put in writing. Laurie does not work, so the responsibilty of the entire mortgage, bills and groceries rested on Dan. They entered a joint tenancy, so all four of their names are on the title.
Here is the dilemma…
Laurie and Dan are now separating, but are still residing in the home because neither of them want to leave. They are in separate rooms. However the very, very sad part of this whole situation is, both my parents were diagnosed with cancer a year ago. Our father just had surgery to remove a brain tumor and is presently going through radiation treatment. And our mother is in the hospital with terminal stage 4 breast cancer we were told she won’t be expected to live past 6 months. Dan knows ALL of this, and although we have been told by many different people not to worry that there are many different options out of this. Without notice, Dan went ahead
and hired a lawyer who went to Supreme Court to order the sale of the home!
So now my father is racing around to get the home re-financed, he is working very late nights and weekends just so they can afford a lawyer, Dan stopped paying for his half of the utilities because they are all in my father’s name so now my father is paying for the utilities they use upstairs as well as his own, and Dan also stopped buying groceries so Laurie and their six year old has been relying on my father for that as well!! He is struggling to do all this and he has cancer, and his wife is in the hospital also dying of cancer!!!
Laurie cannot even get a job because my mother will be discharged from the hospital very shortly, and she will need 24 hr palliative care. Dan has a very, very good paying job and has had no problems paying the mortgage, the utilities and all of their groceries. But now that Laurie wants to separate he has completely cut her off financially. Knowing full well that she has no means of income!! Also, they’ve only been living in that home for two years, the home has no equity, so selling the home would be pointless because he would not get anything from it…he was told this by his lawyer.. yet, he still wants to continue with the sale of the home. He is a control freak that suffers from OCD, and that is mainly the reason why Laurie has decided to leave him. But he is trying to make it as difficult as possible it seems!!
Ideally, Laurie and my parents would love to remain in the home. Our parents put their entire nesting into the down payment to purchase the home, and my father is too old to continue paying another mortgage for the next 15-20 years. My mother is at death’s door and will be released from the hospital in a week to come home to die… yet, Dan is not giving them any other choice but to sell??? How can he do this?? Is this legal?? Have he no heart??
Dan claims that selling the home is his only option out of the mortgage. But my father’s lawyer told them of a few other options:
A) Dan could move out and let my father “assume the loan”. It is not done often, but some banks allow it
B) Dan can sever the joint tenancy and accept a “buy out”
C) or Dan can continue paying the mortgage and my dad and Laurie would remain in the home as “tenants”
When Laurie approached him with the other options he refused to even listen to her!! My question is: What other purpose does Dan have for selling the home other than pure revenge that my sister wants to leave him?? And are there any other options that my father and his lawyer may not know about?? PLEASE ADVISE!!! Any information would be an incredible help… Thank you!!!!!

God what a mess I hope he rots in hell. The only way is to get the lawyers and courts to settle this. The good thing is that their names is on the house I dont know if he can order the sale of the house or not. I will pray they get to stay and you need to ask god for some help

It’s probably best to leave it undisturbed. Removing it will be extremely expensive, and releases it into the air. Leave it alone, and it’s probably never going to be in contact with you.

Inspector for Hazardous materials / readings for pre-purchase of home?
Question by Kim Y: Inspector for Hazardous materials / readings for pre-purchase of home?
Is there such a person who inspects homes for HAZARDS during the pre-purchase exams of a home? This person would check (for instance) Mold, Asbestos, Radon, Carbon-Minoxide, lead based paint, plumbing materials, air pollution, improper ventilation of the home…among other hazards…?
If so, what is the TITLE of this person, and are they Independent or are they employees of the State, City, County…?
Thank you!!

Added Note:
I’ve used Home Inspectors. Their duties entail checking the structural integrity of the home, electrical, plumbing, roof…basic stuff learned on the job as an apprentice or via formal education. I have not witnessed in person, nor read in books, any form of hazmat issues being addressed. The RE Agent has to inform you via documentation of homes made prior to 1960-something would possibly have lead-based paint…but that is the jist of the information given.
I’m going WAYYY beyond “Joe, the Home Inspector” scenario.

Not a government agency for your purpose, they are independent contractors called Home Inspection Specialists, or Home Inspectors.
You pay them a fee to present an inspection report of a home you are interested in buying.
