Question by John d: what is it best test prep book for ap environmental science and ap human geography?

Best answer:

Answer by phstriton
My school does not offer AP Human Geography, but since I am in our school’s geography team and might know more about geography than the average person, I decided to take the exam. I am using the REA book. It seems very informative. Use that one as for AP ENvironmental, I’m not taking that one. Go on Amazon and read the reviews to chose the best one.

Heart 2.0 (Beta): Engineering and the Human Heart

Google Tech Talk (more info below) August 2, 2011 Presented by Nina Tandon, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Dr. Nina Tandon, a TED Fellow and researcher in the field of tissue engineering, discusses her work on cardiac tissue engineering. Her approach involves the development of “enabling technologies” (bioreactors) that facilitate the growth of artificial cardiac cells by mimicking the cells’ natural environments. Nina begins her talk with an overview of cardiac physiology (emphasizing the electrophysiology of the heart), and uses it as a backdrop to introduce the biomimetic engineering strategies she employs in the lab. Speaker Info: Nina Tandon, Ph.D. Nina is a current TED Fellow, post-doctoral researcher at Columbia University’s Lab for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering, executive MBA student at Columbia University, and adjunct professor of Electrical Engineering at the Cooper Union, teaching a “Bioelectricity” class. A native New-Yorker, she spent her early career in telecom (Avaya Labs), transitioning to biomedical engineering via a Fulbright in Italy (working on an electronic odor detector). She completed her PhD under Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic at MIT and Columbia, researching cardiac tissue engineering. After consulting at McKinsey from 2008-10, she’s resumed her research on electrical stimulation for broader tissue engineering applications. In her spare time, she practices yoga, running, metalsmithing, playing with puppies, baking and exploring.

What drives our genes? Salk researchers map the first complete human epigenome

October 14, 2009 LA JOLLA, CA—Although the human genome sequence faithfully lists (almost) every single DNA base of the roughly 3 billion bases that make up a human genome, it doesn’t tell biologists much about how its function is regulated. Now, researchers at the Salk Institute provide the first detailed map of the human epigenome, the layer of genetic control beyond the regulation inherent in the sequence of the genes themselves. “In the past we’ve been limited to viewing small snippets of the epigenome,” says senior author Joseph Ecker, Ph.D., professor and director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory at the Salk Institute and a member of the San Diego Epigenome Center. “Being able to study the epigenome in its entirety will lead to a better understanding of how genome function is regulated in health and disease but also how gene expression is influenced by diet and the environment.” Their study, published in the Oct. 14, 2009 advance online edition of the journal Nature, compared the epigenomes of human embryonic stem cells and differentiated connective cells from the lung called fibroblasts, revealing a highly dynamic, yet tightly controlled, landscape of chemical signposts known as methyl-groups. The head-to-head comparison brought to light a novel DNA methylation pattern unique to stem cells, which may explain how stem cells establish and maintain their pluripotent state, the researchers say. The emergence of epigenetics has already changed the way researchers

Q&A: What do you think is the worst human invention?

lung cancer complications
by marsmet523

Question by : What do you think is the worst human invention?
My answer would be alcoholic drink. Here are the reasons why.The maximum number of deaths in the
world related to any one particular cause is due to
the consumption of alcohol. Millions of people die
every year only because of intake of alcohol. I
need not go into the details of all the ill-effects of
alcohol since most of them are commonly
known. Below is a simple list of few of the alcohol
related illnesses:
a. Cirrhosis of Liver is the most well known alcohol
associated disease.
b. Others are Cancer of Oesophagus, Cancer of
Head and Neck, Cancer of Liver (Hepatoma),
Cancer of Bowel, etc.
c. Oesophagitis, Gastritis, Pancreatitis and Hepatitis
are linked with alcohol consumption.
d. Cardiomyopathy, Hypertension, Coronary
Artherosclerosis, Angina and Heart Attacks are
linked with heavy alcohol intakes.
e. Strokes, Apoplexy, Fits and different types of
Paralysis are linked with alcohol intake.
f. Peripheral Neuropathy, Cortical Atrophy,
Cerebellar Atrophy are well-known syndromes
caused by alcohol consumption.
g. Wernicke – Korsakoff syndrome with amnesia of
recent events, confabulations and retainment of
memory to old events with different types of
paralysis are mainly due to thiamine deficiency
due to excessive alcohol intake.
h. Beriberi and other deficiencies are not uncommon
among alcoholics. Even Pellagra occurs in
alcoholics.
i. Delerium Tremens is a serious complication that
may occur during recurrent infection of alcoholics
or post operatively. It also occurs during
abstention as a sign of withdrawal effect. It is
quite serious and may cause death even if treated
in well equipped centres.
j. Numerous Endocrine Disorders have been
associated with alcoholism ranging from
Myxodema to Hyperthyroidism and Florid
Cushing Syndrome.
k. Hematological ill effects are long and variable.
Folic acid deficiency, however, is the most
common manifestation of alcoholic abuse
resulting in Macrocytic Anemia. Zeive’s syndrome
is a triad of Hemolytic Anemia, Jaundice and
Hyperlipaedemia that follows alcoholic binges.
l. Thrombocytopenia and other platelet
abnormalities are not rare in alcoholics.
m. The commonly used tablet metronidazole (flagyl)
interacts badly with alcohol.
n. Recurrent infection is very common among
chronic alcoholics. The resistance to disease and
the immunological defense system are
compromised by alcohol intake.
o. Chest infections are notorious in alcoholics.
Pneumonia, Lung Abcess, Emphysema and
Pulmonary Tuberculosis are all common in
alcoholics.
p. During acute alcoholic intoxication, the drunk
person usually vomits, the cough reflexes which
are protective are paralysed. The vomitus thus
easily pass to the lung causing Pneumonia or
Lung Abscess. Occasionally it may even cause
suffocation and death.
q. The ill effects of alcohol consumption on women
deserves special mention. Females are more
vulnerable to alcohol-related Cirrhosis than men.
During pregnancy alcohol consumption has a
severe detrimental effect on the foetus. Foetal
Alcohol Syndrome is being recognised more and
more in the medical profession.
r. Skin diseases are also related to alcohol
indulgence.
s. Eczema, Alopecia, Nail Dystrophy, Paronychia
(infection around the nails) and Angular Stomatitis
(inflammation of the angle of the mouth) are
common diseases among alcoholics.

Asbestos: hazardous for human health.

On this year’s World Day for Health and Safety at Work, 28 April, WHO is calling for concerted global action to promote occupational safety and health in a “green economy” – one of the themes of the upcoming RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, 20-22 June. Ensuring workers’ health is an essential prerequisite for sustainable development. Presently, more than 2 million people die each year as a result of work-related illness or injuries and some 180 million people fall ill because of their work. One in every three deaths from occupational cancer is estimated to be caused by asbestos. Each year around 107, 000 people die from asbestos related cancers, mesothelioma and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lung) as a result of exposure to asbestos at work. All forms of asbestos and products containing asbestos, including non-friable or ‘high density’ chrysotile asbestos, are considered by WHO as hazardous for human health. Asbestos products have the potential to deteriorate and pose a risk to the community and especially to workers carrying out alterations, maintenance and demolition. World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated each year on 28 April to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. In collaboration with the International Labour Organization, intergovernmental organizations and civil society, WHO is actively working towards the elimination of asbestos-related diseases. The most effective way to eliminate

What is the average width of a human lung?

lung
by foodnut.com

Question by J-Bomb: What is the average width of a human lung?
I would to know the average width of a human lung. I stress the word average.
I am asking what the width is. I do not care what the lung capacity is. Specifically only the width, nothing else. An average adult lung width is all I require.

Note width as in a distance, i.e. metres etc not a volume metres^3.

Best answer:

Answer by dylan
Well, it depends on your size and sex as well as lung capacity. Lung size is generally assessed by total lung capacity (TLC) or vital capacity (VC).

Q&A: Use of human body in traditional Japanese medicine?

Question by James B: Use of human body in traditional Japanese medicine?
I read an article of Professor Tsuyoshi awaya :http://homepage1.nifty.com/awaya/hp/ronbun/r010.html
Say: The old Chinese pharmaceutical work “Bencaowangmu”(1596) describes how most parts of the human body, including bones, nail, hair, dandruff, earwax, impurities on the teeth, feces, urine, sweat, organs etc. can be used as medications against various ailments. The utilization of mummies as medicine was in fashion in Europe from the 15th to the 17th century where, it is said, human fat taken from the dead body was also utilized as medicine. There are examples of the brain, liver, lungs, heart, bone, flesh, and fetus being utilized as medicine in Japan in past times.

But I read as the dissection of human body was forbidden by law and buddhism.
the only ones who could do dissections were the eta by only on bodies of criminal.
I can not figure out how to get body parts to make medicines if the dissection was forbidden?

Best answer:

Answer by thecheapest902
I don’t think this kind of medicine is actually used in Japan now.

Epidemiological research has been focused primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking, which has been studied more extensively than any other form of consumption. Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and cancer (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer). It also causes peripheral vascular disease and hypertension. The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and on how much the person smokes. Q&A: Are there any risks in doing research with human cancer cells?

Question by jono ashton chan: Are there any risks in doing research with human cancer cells?
I’m doing research with prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancer cells under the supervision of PhDs, but are there any health risks (inherent or not) involved with doing cancer research? Also, is it okay that none of the researchers wear goggles at the lab benches, or is that a safety violation?

Best answer:

Answer by FlyfreeIzzieUCSD
Not that I know of….

I mean.. if the research facility is in a hospital, their are risks of infection, just like working with little kids…..

Why don’t you ask your supervisor about the goggles? If they arent wearing them, than they might not need to.

I do cancer research at times at the UCSD Cancer center and it’s safe from what I know however most of the work I do is in the behavioral area. We do interact with sick patients at times but they have greater risk of getting sick from us than we do from them due to their compromised immune system if that is what you mean….

Some verification and information needed about unit 731 Japanese human experiments. ?

Question by Jakie J: Some verification and information needed about unit 731 Japanese human experiments. ?
Hi i was just wondering if it is true that all of the people involved with unit 731 where acquitted of the war crimes in exchange that the information be given to the U.S. Government and Shiro Ishii died of lung cancer a free man.
Any information or short video clips that is about unit 731 would be greatly appreciated…I have a school powerpoint project due on feb. 18th that must 5 mins long.
THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL WHO HELP!!!

Best answer:

Answer by Koshu
Unit 731 (731 部隊, Nana-san-ichi butai?) was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II. It was responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes carried out by Japanese personnel.
Officially known by the Imperial Japanese Army as the Kempeitai Political Department and Epidemic Prevention Research Laboratory, it was initially set up under the Kempeitai military police of the Empire of Japan to develop weapons of mass destruction for potential use against Chinese, and possibly Soviet forces.

Unit 731 was based in the Pingfang district of the city of Harbin in the puppet state of Manchukuo.

More than ten thousand people, from which around 600 every year were provided by the kempeitai, were subjects of the experimentation conducted by Unit 731.
Those were both civilian and military of Chinese, Russian, American and other nationalities as well as some Japanese criminals from the Japanese mainlands. The victims who died in the camp included at least 25 victims from the former Soviet Union, Mongolia and Korea. Some American and European Allied prisoners of war also died at the hands of Unit 731.

According to the 2002 International Symposium on the Crimes of Bacteriological Warfare, the number of people killed by the Imperial Japanese Army germ warfare and human experiments is around 580,000. According to other sources, the use of biological weapons researched in Unit 731′s bioweapons and chemical weapons programs resulted in possibly as many as 200,000 deaths of military personnel and civilians in China .

Unit 731 was the headquarters of many subsidiary units used by the Japanese to research biological warfare; other units included Unit 516 (Qiqihar), Unit 543 (Hailar), Unit 773 (Songo unit), Unit 100 (Changchun), Unit Ei 1644 (Nanjing), Unit 1855 (Beijing), Unit 8604 (Guangzhou), Unit 200 (Manchuria) and Unit 9420 (Singapore).
Many of the scientists involved in Unit 731 went on to prominent careers in post-war politics, academia, business, and medicine. Some were arrested by Soviet forces and tried at the Khabarovsk War Crime Trials; others, who surrendered to the Americans, were granted amnesty in exchange for access to the data collected by them.

On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, wrote to Washington that “additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as ‘War Crimes’ evidence.”[8] The deal was concluded in 1948.
Because of their brutality, Unit 731′s actions have now been declared by the United Nations to have been crimes against humanity.

Arrested by the American occupation authorities at the end of World War II, Ishii and Unit 731 leaders received immunity in 1946 from war-crimes prosecution before the Tokyo tribunal in exchange for germ warfare data based on human experimentation. On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur wrote to Washington that “additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as ‘War Crimes’ evidence.” [5] The deal was concluded in 1948.[6]
Ishii was never prosecuted for any war crimes. According to Richard Drayton, a Cambridge University history lecturer, Ishii later moved to Maryland where he conducted research into bio-weapons [7]. But according to Ishii’s daughter Harumi, he stayed in Japan [8], where he died of throat cancer at the age of 67.
