Can radiation therapy in humans affect their pets?
Question by Peekaboo: Can radiation therapy in humans affect their pets?
My grandmother was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer and is doing a daily radiation treatment. I don’t know many of the details, sorry. To make it short: she was diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer, had a hysterectomy, and began radiation recently.
Her dog, a tea cup chihuahua has stopped eating, stopped sitting with my grandmother and is just not her normal self. Is this because of the treatment? Should the dog be taken away from my grandmother while she is going through the treatment?
Best answer:
Answer by Frank
The dog could be reacting to the way your grandmother is acting. Or the dog could be reacting to drugs that your grandmother is taking. The radiation therapy is not detectable by humans or animals.
For whatever reason, the dog knows something is wrong. It may be best to move the dog if the dog won’t sit with your grandmother, but if you can find a way to get the dog to eat a little, then keeping the dog with grandma might be a comfort to her.

Are Humans Designed To Eat Meat?
A presentation by Milton Mills, MD. The major causes of death in Western countries are cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Abundant medical research linking these diseases to dietary and lifestyle factors, guidelines advanced by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Surgeon General, among others, counsel Americans to sharply reduce animal foods consumed and replace them with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In effect, they are recommending a more plant-based diet, which begs the question: Are humans designed to eat meat? Milton Mills, MD has an extensive background in nutrition research, focusing on the role nutrition plays in the development of chronic diseases. He is a graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine and is a practicing physician in the Washington, DC area. He also serves as the Associate Director of Preventive Medicine for the health policy group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. He has lectured extensively throughout North America and is a Nutrition Health Education Video Spokesperson for the Discovery Health Channel. Why are humans the only species that pollutes to the detriment of life? Can’t blame that on God can we?
Question by Bilbo Baggins: Why are humans the only species that pollutes to the detriment of life? Can’t blame that on God can we?
Since all other life on this planet is unaware of wastes they create,…….then why is it never a detriment to earths ecological system?
It is a living mechanical circulatory system isn’t it? It shows there is an organized design of a Supreme Creator.
Most animals and fish contribute waste to their environments that are essentially the same as human waste (fecal matter laden with bacteria and reduced compounds). If the population of an environment exceeded the capability of the environment to neutralize or at least tolerate those wastes, certain organisms will begin to die. This limit is known as the “carrying capacity” of the environment. In general, nature is wise enough to not naturally reach this limit in most instances, such that most systems can self regulate themselves and avoid reaching this limit.
There are examples of individual organisms that can excrete specific pollutants or toxins into an environment, usually as a defense mechanism. There are also plenty of examples of organisms that can detoxify and store pollutants from an environment in their bodies, making the overall environment “safer” (until the organism dies, at which point some toxins can be re-released to the environment).

Q&A: Are humans too self aggrandizing?
Question by indiechick: Are humans too self aggrandizing?
I often wonder if we have a slightly “off” perception of human abilities/importance vs. other animals. We have this idea that intelligence is a supreme trait and the “goal” so to speak of evolution (not that it has a goal, but that seems to be a common perception). We measure intelligence in terms of we can manipulate our environment more than other animals can. We view the earth as “ours” while animals just live in it. We view ourselves as better than other animals.
For one thing I wonder if a less developed life form might have more staying power in evolutionary terms. But beyond that, and I’m not sure quite how to phrase this, it’s like we’ve picked the one thing we’re good at and used that as the criteria by which we judge how “evolved” an organism is. It’s like if you were the best tennis player in the world and you proclaimed that the standard by which all human worth should be judged was how good they were at tennis. Isn’t “worth” a subjective measure? It implies that there is some purpose to life that we’re somehow achieving.
In terms of reproductive success, we’re not the worst out there, but there are MANY species better than us. In terms of natural selection, we’re giving it the middle finger with medical technology. (Not that we shouldn’t use medicine, it’s just that we’re not improving our gene pool) I tend to think that we’re going to die out within the next few hundred years. Maybe longer, but I think all this manipulating our environment isn’t good in an evolutionary sense. Look at the “manmade” disease obesity? A disease few wild animals suffer from. We surround ourselves with harmful chemicals and then find out later how bad they are for us(lead based paint, asbestos, thalidomide, trans fats). We think of these things as isolated things, but we will continue to find new things we thought were safe really aren’t. It’s a continual process, we’re never free from harmful substances that we have intentionally placed in our lives. Now, I love modern conveniences. I can’t live without my A/C. But I wonder if we have overestimated how important intelligence really is in the grand scheme of things. A whale can surely live as full a life as we can (until we destroyed his food source with oil that is…)
It’s like we have an idea of a “goal” or a forward motion when it comes to evolution. Like things were less evolved and now they’re more evolved. But I think that’s an illusion we’ve created starring our modern selves as the “goal”. Personally, I think the universe/life has always existed and has created a multitude of organisms over the years, none of which are any more important or more evolved than the last. There’s no forward motion, there’s just motion.

Q&A: Mycoplasma in rats can be transferred to humans?
Question by l z: Mycoplasma in rats can be transferred to humans?
Did you know:
You need to put the rat on the highest-quality lowered caloric, lowered protein diet you can find. One that meets or exceed the nutritional requirements of rats as determined by the U.S. National Research Council (N.R.C.). Some good ones are a 16% protein block distributed by Teclad Harlan Sprague Dawley, Mazuri 5663 or ZuPreem Rodent Maintenance diet. Most quality brands meet
N.R.C. guidelines on rat nutrition. However, their protein content, 23.5%, and caloric content is a bit too high for maximum longevity and their fiber content (3.8%) is too low. You can get around this by mixing it 50-50 with an
equine range pellet, like Mazuri 5661 with 13% protein and 2.9% fat and 13.2% fiber. This will give you an 18% protein diet. With this mixture, the rats will attain their top body weight later in life, become reproductively active later in life, and, on the whole, live longer lives*. They are also less likely to suffer from kidney disease later in life. To this diet, I would add an additional 10 -12 units (iu) of vitamin E as well as a portion of the contents of a mixed anti-oxidant, anti-aging microcapsule, such as those produced by Landco Corp and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which stimulate the immune system that mycoplasm suppresses. Vitamin A deficiencies is known to speed the progress of mycoplasmosis in rats. However, too much vitamin A is also toxic and the diet I suggested has plenty
of vitamin A.
3) The temperatures of your rat’s home should be kept between 65°F and 80°F. Temperatures should be kept as constant as possible – rats don’t do well when their temperature varies up and down a lot. Humidity should be between 30-70%. Twelve hours of light and twelve of darkness is a good ration but some rats breed better with 14 hours of light and 10 of darkness.
4) Good air quality is the most important thing you can provide for your rat to minimize the lung damage Mycoplasma causes. It is this lung damage that ultimately causes the rat’s decline. First, they need to be kept in a dust and mold-free room, preferably with central heat and air-conditioning and at least four air changes an hour. We used 14 air changes per hour at N.I.H. The bedding material you use is extremely important. I like hard wood chips, next best is dust-free pine shavings. Worst are corncobs, cedar shavings and bentonite clays (cat litter products). Shredded ordinary newspaper with black soya ink is probably also OK – I have never used it. What you want to avoid is dust, mold, bacterial spores, airborne mineral products and atmospheric pollutants. These are all known to produce lung lesions in all animals. Of course, no wild rodents should have access to your rat’s room, food or utensils.
Would love opinions here. Not sure I’m keeping my rat if there is a chance of this.
The Rat Club recently informed me that they believe pine shavings to be toxic to rats. It is true that some species of pine contain aromatic organic compounds that God put there to control insect and mold damage to the pine trees. In the US, shavings derived from “Yellow Pine” contain allot of these resins. However, shaving that are the byproduct of what the wood industry calls “White Pine” now predominate in the wood industry. You can tell the difference by simply sniffing the shavings. If they smell any way like Pine-Sol, don’t buy them. If you are in doubt, buy some other type of bedding.

No, you cannot get Myco from your rats. Rats are affected by Murine Respiratory Mycoplasmosis. The kind that causes walking pneumonia and arthritis problems in people is a different strain entirely that humans cannot pass to rats and rats cannot pass to humans. In fact, if you’ll scroll up in the same article you’ve quoted here it says:
“Mycoplasmas are bacteria that do not have a cell wall and have the smallest number of genes necessary for any free-living thing. There are lots of kinds of Mycoplasma. They affect all kinds of animals and even plants and some of the “flu”s we get are actually due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Physicians call this “Walking Pneumonia” and it is also linked to arthritis and neurological disorders. But don’t be frightened, this is an entirely different Mycoplasma.”
While wild rats are carriers and transmitters of some pretty icky illnesses, much like feral cats or dogs as far as that goes—domesticated rats are entirely different. .Since rats don’t get out of the house and explore the neighborhood, they don’t have contact with the kind of nasties that even your cat or dog can bring home (salmonella etc) from their daily rambles. What people can and to often get from their rats is simple ringworm which is easily treated. But even then, the rat has to have been exposed to it first, usually from a dirty pet store or some similar situation.
Regarding the Myco, you should know that cats are a different matter entirely and the human strain can be picked up from your pet /cat/. But people don’t seem to get quite as upset knowing it comes from kitty.
I’m not sure if the last part of your question is actually a question, a comment, or a cut and paste from an article, but just for helpfulness, the safest kind of shaving to use are the ones labeled Aspen shavings. Regular pine (yellow) or cedar are very toxic to retty lungs.

Marijuana Kills Brain Cancer Cells in Humans
Daily News @ RevolutionNews.US ~ Guillermo Velasco and colleagues, at Complutense University, Spain, have provided evidence that suggests that cannabinoids such as the main active component of marijuana (THC) have anticancer effects on human brain cancer cells. In the study, THC was found to induce the death of various human brain cancer cell lines and primary cultured human brain cancer cells by a process known as autophagy. Consistent with the in vitro data, administration of THC to mice with human tumors decreased tumor growth and induced the tumor cells to undergo autophagy. As analysis of tumors from two patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (a highly aggressive brain tumor) receiving intracranial THC administration showed signs of autophagy, the authors suggest that cannabinoid administration may provide a new approach to targeting human cancers. Cannabinoid action induces autophagy-mediated cell death through stimulation of ER stress in human glioma cells Story Source The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by Journal of Clinical Investigation, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS. S10E02 Red Green shows how to make a big batch of popcorn. The title character, Red Green (Steve Smith), is a handyman who generally tries to find shortcuts to most of his projects, trusting the vast majority of his work to duct tape (which he calls “the handyman’s secret weapon” and the “universal adapter”). He is the president of the Possum Lodge, a fictional men’s club in the small northwestern Ontario town of Possum Lake, near the also-fictional town of Port Asbestos. He and his fellow lodge members had their own TV show (which was more or less the show itself), in which they gave humorous lessons and demonstrations in repair work and outdoor activities (such as fishing and camping), and advice for men on relating to women, among other things. The characters Bob & Doug McKenzie, from SCTV’s Great White North sketch, are an obvious comparison and a likely inspiration (with Dave Thomas, who played Doug McKenzie, appearing on an episode of The Red Green Show along with his real life brother Ian Thomas, as Ben and Dougie Franklin).

I was really stoned the other night and i was just thinking to myself. What if the earth is a cell, or something like it, to something way bigger, and humans are a cancer that are slowly killing it. I mean, we are with out a doubt destroying our world, and unless we get wiped out relatively soon, our earth will die. Just something i thought about, I dont believe it or anything, but just wonder sometimes….what the hell are we here for.

Yes, sometimes I think that too. Maybe on a little speck of dust there is a whole other world. And on that world on the speck of dust, there might be another world. It goes on and on and on. And then our world could be just another speck of dust floating in another bigger person’s world. And then when I’m sitting at the computer on the internet answering questions like this I think of all the possibilities. And I remember when I thought life was simple. WELL ITS NOT!

Q&A: Corporations have the same rights as Humans? How does that effect you?
Question by Liberty against the NWO: Corporations have the same rights as Humans? How does that effect you?
If ya didn’t know….
After this law was illegally passed in 1886 (Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific R.R. Co.) it has been a plague on our Democracy. Corporations can claim any Amendment, such as the 14th Amendment for discrimination rights to stop local communities from protecting their small, local businesses and keep out predatory retailers or large corporations convicted of crimes elsewhere, or claim the 1st Amendment for the right to deceive people in it’s PR (like when “Big Tobacco” wouldn’t admit cigarettes are addictive and cause cancer, and the cover up with asbestos). Even worse in 1978 (Boston v. Bellotti) by one-vote majority decision corporations were decided to be “persons”, making it legal for them to give HUGE quantities of money to political causes through the right of free speech. Thereby making the average American citizen voter (i.e. We the People) have to compete with Corporations on unequal footing. Corporations are here to serve We the People not vice-versa.
On top of this, corporations never die – they just get bigger while gaining more assets & control. These corporations have gotten so big they dominate most main media outlets, shut down local businesses with insane price undercutting (from overseas cheap labor & products, tax loopholes, etc.), keep renewable energy from being a reality, and pay the politicians that will keep that Corporation’s best interests in mind in order to keep receiving their money flow.
Only humans should have human rights in a democracy. Corporations can have the right to keep certain trade secrets and that’s it! Nor should they be allowed to influence politicians with their GIANT POCKETS thereby making the average American citizen voter (i.e. We the People) have to compete with Corporations on unequal footing. Corporations are here to serve We the People, not the other way around. I’m all for having corporations…but they are ALL answerable to We the People
