HVAC, how safe are the old units?

how dangerous is asbestos
by Michael 1952

Question by july: HVAC, how safe are the old units?
my hvac may be as old as 34 years.

was asbestos used in those old units? also, inside theunit,”above” the removable filter, the insulation is torn all the way around and is peeling off and is very dirty.
(renter before me never cleaned anything).

is this a dangerous situation.
will the loose fiberglass be going thru the system and be in the air i breathe?

Probably not dangerous, but there may be efficiency issues. The newer units work better than the older ones, but not necessarily enough better to justify a replacement. Talk to a dealer or consulting engineer.

HVAC Companies Can Provide a Range of Services

Article by Alfred Ardis

Whether you want to add on to your house or get something fixed, you should consider calling an HVAC company. You might be surprised at the range of services many of these companies offer. Of course, they mostly deal with heating and cooling, but a few things fall into this category that you may not think of. Consider a few services that your local HVAC company can offer.

One neat feature for any home is a fireplace. This is practically a necessity if you live in a cold area where it snows or rains during the winter. Even if you live in a warm climate, a fireplace can be great during the holidays or even just occasional rainy days, as you can curl up with a book in front of this type of fixture. If you do opt for this feature, be sure to choose a professional with lots of experience installing it. You will probably also need some help choosing the best one for your house, so pick an expert who can work with you on this decision. Try to find someone who can show you pictures of fireplaces they have installed in other houses so you get an idea of the end result.

Some HVAC companies also offer plumbing services. Whether your pipes or drains are clogged or leaking, you should consider calling this type of company to get the issue fixed. This is especially true if you have to get some other service performed, too, such as an air conditioner or heater repair or installation. This saves you from having to call a separate plumbing business, as it is easier to use the same company for a few repairs. Therefore, find out if your local HVAC business also offers plumbing services. You may be surprised to find out that you can usually get drain cleaning, septic system repairs, and even hot tub installations from this kind of business.

Additionally, you can usually get your ducts cleaned when you hire a heating and cooling expert. Make sure that your air is high quality by getting this service, and that you do not have mold or asbestos in your house. This kind of business can detect and get rid of harmful substances in the ducts, helping you and your family breathe easier and stay healthier than ever. Thus, getting this service is often worth it, whether it is from an HVAC company or a place that specializes in duct cleaning.

A place that features heating and cooling knowledge is often a good choice to get a range of things done, even if you would not normally think to go. For example, while you may not think about getting your heater serviced by the same professional who installs your hot tub, it really does makes sense, as both tasks require knowledge of heating concepts. This is why you should give your local heating and cooling business a chance to do more than just install and repair air conditioners and heaters in your home.

HVAC Mechanic’s Tips for Recognizing A Sick House or Building

HVAC Mechanic’s Tips for Recognizing A Sick House or Building

Article by C Parker604

Most people spend well over 90% of their time indoors. In which case, indoor air is going to impact their health far more than outdoor air. Illnesses such as asthma, allergies, sinusitis, fatigue, and respiratory problems have plagued many for years without a known clinical diagnosis until more recent years. Laboratory and clinical research have been able to document that many people have been made sick by the contaminants or toxins such as mold, fungus, mildew, radon, carbon monoxide, etc. which dwells right within their houses, and houses with high levels of these pollutants and toxins are called sick houses.

What is a Sick House?

A sick house is a house with a serious air quality problem. The area can be described as sick mainly because people develop symptoms of the illnesses mentioned earlier when they must spend a considerable amount of time where there is a build-up of air pollutants. In humid climates, sick houses are usually houses with a serious moisture problem. Moisture also plays an important role in promoting the growth and spread of mold. Molds produce spores and when people are exposed to mold spores over and over they can become symptomatic and develop allergic symptoms. Mold, asbestos, and other chemicals in the carpet or paint can be the cause of sick house or building syndrome also.

Sick building syndrome is not a myth but a reality and its effects can vary greatly from one person to another, it all depends on the individual’s immune system.

Few think that their homes may be a source of pollution, but the truth is that the indoor air may be far more polluted than the air outside their homes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollution is one of the biggest health problems in America and is detrimental to having a healthy home. On average we spend about 90 percent of our time indoors – out of that 90 percent, about 65 percent is spent at home. The EPA informs us that 6 out of 10 homes and buildings can be classified as sick, meaning they are hazardous to your health to occupy as a result of airborne pollutants. These airborne toxins and pollutants can almost be anywhere in the home and are especially dangerous to small children.

Other diseases and conditions caused by exposure to these pollutants or toxins are eye, nose, and throat irritation, stuffiness, skin rashes, headaches, nausea, flu-like symptoms. Symptoms following exposure come and go fairly quickly — you may notice them within an hour or two of entering a building but also notice that they will be gone within an hour or two of leaving a building.

Excessive and long term indoor exposure to these toxins can lead to anemia, sinusitis, allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue, a weakened and compromised immune system, cancer, brain damage and even death.

The Solution To A Sick House Is To Improve The Air Quality Indoors

Poor indoor air quality can affect the health and well being of the people who live there, especially children. Radon poisoning symptoms and formaldehyde poisoning are illnesses which can be attributed to poor indoor air quality. There are many cases of carbon monoxide poisoning each year which lead to death. Ongoing indoor air pollution can cause severe allergy symptoms or even asthma attacks. Mold allergies are the most common complaint due to poor indoor air quality in homes.

The only cure for sick house or building syndrome is to get rid of the irritants which are causing you or your family to be sick, if not possible, then a change of work or housing must be given serious consideration because staying in a building or house that makes you sick will continue to do so until your immune system is totally compromised which means either serious health issues or possibly death. The only way to get healthy is to get away from what is making you sick and allow the immune system to recover from the exposure to the chemicals, toxins, or pollutants. I have asbestos paper wrap around my hvac ducts underneath my house. Now what?

Question by Robert: I have asbestos paper wrap around my hvac ducts underneath my house. Now what?
I have found holes in the ducting and have patched the holes. I am very concered about the situation. I have a family in this house. There are more holes that I can’t get to, and the cloth wrap in some areas is in peices under my house. Is our health at risk? Please help with info. I have looked this up all over the internet, but no good feedback .

Answer by Poppy
If you were to remove the asbestos, and got the dust in your lungs there may be a problem, may is the operative word there. Repair the holes(wear a dust mask), and cover it with an insulating cover and quit with the worry. If you really want it out of there, hire a pro, and pay the big bucks to have it hauled off to a has-mat dump. Not necessary. You can always call a pro out, he will inspect the metal parts, if they are not leaking, you really are in good shape.

What are the laws for HVAC C20 contractors in California regarding asbestos?

what is asbestos
by exile in suburbia

Question by damienslittledemon: What are the laws for HVAC C20 contractors in California regarding asbestos?
Do I have to ask my customers if asbestos is present in houses built before 1978 even if I don’t do asbestos abatement? Just trying to cover all bases legally. If possible please give references and I won’t hold anyone to their answers as 100% legal advice.

Answer by MrTBob
The best place to find an answer to your question is the site I have referenced below.
You will have to assume asbestos is present in these properties even if they were built before it was used as they may have been refurbished in the later years.
