Why are healthy people NOT immune to cancer? They are still suspectible of getting it.
Being healthy does reduce the risk of getting cancer. However, you can’t be immune from it (healthy or physically ill). And what makes really makes me mad is cancer is an extremely common occurrence and deadly epidemic.

An effective immune system is really not helpful on its own in destroying cancer. For the immune system to do anything, it has to be able to recognise the cancer cells as such. To the immune system a cancer cell looks just like a normal healthy cell – no matter how strong the immune system is. Research is ongoing in developing “cancer vaccines” that are able to trigger immune responses against various cancer types.

I live a healthier lifestyle than most people around me, and yet without immunization I’m down with upper respiratory infections for weeks every two months or so. I spend almost a quarter of my year being sick, and I am not about to take this anymore.
So here’s my checklist:
[v] balanced diet and nutrition
[v] exercise (I take an hour’s walk home from the office, but the air quality of the city I live in is dreadful, especially during rush hours)
[v] plenty of water intake
[v] abstinence from tobacco and alcohol
[v] good personal and home hygiene
[v] enough rest (about 60-75% of the time… exceptions include deadlines and other normal parts of life)
And yet I get sick more often than my friends who smoke and drink and are generally irresponsible of their health.
I asked my doctor about immunization, but he said that vaccines for upper respiratory diseases only exist for young children and are not made for adults because adults have a far better immune system. Well OK, I won’t die from a fever and a sore throat, but it is expensive to have to visit the doctor each time, and missing a lot of work days won’t help with my career despite the praises I’ve gained for my performance.
Is my doctor lying to me so that I get sick more often and keep coming back to him? Or are there immunizations that I can take in order to maintain a good health? Also, what other daily habits can I adopt without appearing to be mysophobic or otherwise abnormal?
* I got immunized for influenza in March 2010, said that the vaccine was good for a year.
* Mid June: I already got a bacterial upper respiratory infection already and was down for two weeks
* Early November: I got a viral upper respiratory infection but the doctor prescribed me antibiotics while waiting for my blood test results, having mistakenly suspected that I got typhoid. It was only then that my doctor told me that the vaccine had expired by July because now a different strain of influenza is breaking out. My fever lasted a week, but the coughing lasted a month.
* December: I had only cured in early December, and two days after Christmas I got another viral upper respiratory infection, which my doctor believes is NOT a relapse of my last infection. I was prescribed Panadol, Nonflamin, Benadryl, and Pancreatin (because I feel abdominal pain every now and then). The doctor predicted that I should be recovering by today and ready to go to work tomorrow, but the fever has only w

Cancer has robbed me and so many others of people we love. It is the one disease I fear. Is the key to curing cancer alerting the immune system to these abnormal cells? I know that cancer is apart of the body; not perceived as foreign and that’s why they can co-exist with normal cells. Could we specifically target them so that they are recognized as foreign? Is there a property of these cells that only they contain that could be exploited?

Less than a month ago, a friends 11 year old daughter was life lined to the Children’s Hospital. She had fainted and would not respond. After testing her, she was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Lukemia. Her treatment plan was chemotherapy for 10 days, hospital stay of 20, home for 2 weeks. She had chemotherapy for 10 days, the following day, she was unresponsive, and the doctor’s did not feel she was going to pull thru the night. She did, and further testing revealed she had fungal lesions on her lungs, etc. They operated on her, and removed the lesions, did a bone marrow test, it is now negative for lukemia. It has been two days since the surgery, and we received word that the fungal infection is taking over her body, and there is pretty much no hope left for her. There is an experimental drug out there, but will not receive it before Friday, if she can hang on. Has anyone heard of this?

Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system of your body takes a different course, by mistakenly attacking its own tissues and cells. Allergic disorders take place when the i system tends to be over active.
<h3>Immunodeficiency Disorders</h3>
I system disorders can occur when your i system is compromised or is not present at all. Primary immunodeficiencies can be due to genetic abnormalities, hence individuals are born with this disorder. Acquired immunodeficiencies can occur due to various infections, nutritional irregularities or medical treatment. These i system disorders have proven to affect B-cells, T-cells and phagocytes severely.
<h3>Here are a few disorders due to primary immunodeficiency:</h3>Selective IgA Deficiency
This immunoglobulin is usually found in the body fluids and saliva. Deficiency of IgA can produce less number of antibodies, thus evading the entrance protection and giving rise to allergies, colds, respiratory infections, etc.
SCID
Severe combined immunodeficiency occurs due to scarcity of B-lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte. Without the help of these cells it is impossible to fight infections. For a child suffering from SCID, the only way to survive is by doing a bone marrow transplant.
DiGeorge syndrome
Children born with thymic dysplasia do not have thymus or underdeveloped thymus which deters the T-lymphocytes maturing. They suffer from recurrent infections and physical deformities.
Chediak-Higashi Syndrome
This is one of the rare inherited immune system disorders which give rise to albinism.
<h3>Here are a few disorders due to acquired immunodeficiency:</h3>AIDS
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS finishes your immune system gradually. It is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which totally demolishes the T-helper cells and causes various deadly infections. AIDS can be contracted at birth, through sexual intercourse or through the use of infected needles.
Medications</strong Some medications subdue and suppress the immune system severely. Chemotherapy treatment and immunosuppressant medications can cause acquired immunodeficiency.
One of the most unusual immune system facts is autoimmune diseases. This disorder is caused when your own i system attacks your own body organs and tissues, misidentifying them to be some foreign elements. There are various autoimmune disorders like scleroderma, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, etc. Most of the body organs, muscles, bones are affected due to this disorder.
Allergic Disorders
Allergens provoke the immune system to overreact and cause allergic disorders. There are many allergic reactions occurring due to the environmental antigen exposure. Some common allergic disorders are:
Asthma
Usually caused due to pollens, dust mites, animal fur, molds, etc. These allergens narrow the breathing tubes, reducing the airflow and making the person unable to breathe.
Allergies
Can occur due to dust, change in weather, medications, various types of foods, toxins, etc.
Cancers
One of the most feared i system disorders is cancer. To cure cancerous growth is still quite unpopular in many countries. This usually takes place when the cell growth is uncontrolled and abnormal. Any supplements should always be cleared first by the treating oncologist.
Many “natural” remedies and even some vitamin supplements etc can actually counteract the action of some types of chemotherapy.
I had many well-meaning friends who recommended all sorts of treatments and supplements while I was going through my treatment, some of them were offended when I politely refused their offer to supply the recommended supplement. This particular supplement was actually one my oncologist had already warned me to avoid.
Friends have their place providing support physically, financially or emotionally but leave the health care to the medical team.
