ARC Abatement’s Steve Chappell, VP and General Manager of our Dallas office was interviewed by KXAS about the removal of asbestos from buildings owned by First Baptist Church Dallas that was imploded the morning of Saturday October 30, 2010. Steve has extensive experience with asbestos abatement and turned the downtown Dallas site over to the demolition team on-time and on-budget. Great job, Steve.

The Park Lane Went to Court over the Sands implosion
The Park Lane Hotel is located right across the street from the former Sands Casino. They went to court to try to get a judge to issue and injunction to stop the implosion. Their complaint was that the Sands couldn’t prove that all of the asbestos in the building was removed.

Port of Galveston Headhouse Implosion
At approximately 7 o’clock on a beautiful Sunday morning, a 236-foot high building called a head house came tumbling down at the Port of Galveston. The implosion not only leveled the second tallest building on Galveston Island, but also removed the final vestiges of a 1930s-era grain elevator complex, making way for expansion of the Port’s cruise operations. “This demolition is a major step forward in the realization of our million cruise terminal renovation plans. The grain elevator has been non-operational since 1998 and was located in a prime area to support the expansion needed to service the Port’s amazing growth in cruise operations,” said Port Director Steven M. Cernak. Overseeing the demolition activities since work began in June of this year, general contractor and construction manager CH2M HILL brought in an experienced management team to coordinate the numerous challenges facing the project. Among the issues facing the team were removal and abatement of nearly 500 windows containing asbestos and a schedule that required completion prior to the end of September. Tropical storms, hurricanes and normal hot, humid weather contributed to minor delays and obstacles that had to be overcome. Subcontractor JTB Services, Houston, managed the implosion work, performed by NADC-member Dykon Explosive Demolition, and other demolition services. JL Hudson Department Store Implosion
With the press of a button at 5:47 PM on October 24, 1998, Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer dropped the JL Hudson Department Store from his citys skyline and into the history books and record books. Hudsons was the tallest department store in the country and was second in square footage only to Macys anchor Store in New York. It dominated the retail market in the city through the 1970s before closing its doors in 1983. The store was built in 12 separate stages, the first in 1911 and the last in 1946. The complex had two retail basements and 23 above grade retail floors, including mezzanines. Two additional basements and six upper stories in a tower, provided storage and mechanical support for the 2.2 million square foot building. In all there were 33 levels in the structure. In the fall of 1997, the Downtown Development Authority of Detroit (DDA), retained a joint venture of Walbridge Aldinger and Jenkins Construction of Detroit to manage the project. Walbridge/Jenkins took bids for asbestos abatement of the structure and the contract, which took three months to complete, was performed by Loyalty Environmental of Chicago. The demolition contract went to a joint venture between Detroit based Homrich, Inc. and Boston based North American Site Development. They, in turn, retained Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) and the Loizeaux Family of Phoenix, Maryland to design and perform the tricky implosion of the Detroit landmark. No structural drawings of the facility were available …

Sota Construction Services, Inc., an ABC member for more than thirteen years from Pittsburgh, won the Award of Merit for their Little Sisters of the Poor 1923 Building Renovation project. The architect on this project was Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff + Goettel, and the owner was the Little Sisters of the Poor. The judges selected this project for the Award of Merit because Sota Construction encountered several challenges, including an inadequate soil-bearing capacity, frequent mass and funeral interruptions, and unforeseen asbestos removal, and the project maintained its original schedule despite all challenges.
